Joint closure in synthetic resin mortar coverings The edges of the joints in heavily used industrial coverings are repeatedly damaged by the impact stress on the small metal wheels of the fork lifters if they are not reinforced with metal. This phenomenon could also be observed with synthetic resin mortar coverings.
In order to protect the joints in the pavement, an attempt was made to seal the joints, as is still used today for cement floors. The edge is protected by an angle iron, in which one leg lies horizontally on the surface, while the second leg of the angle iron extends inwards from the edge of the joint perpendicularly along one joint wall. These angle irons are attached to the underlying concrete structure using anchoring irons.
Although it was initially to be expected that this design would prove its worth thanks to the good adhesion of the synthetic resin mortar to the metal, it was found that a loosening still occurs with very heavy loads and with long contra-angles.
There are two reasons for this phenomenon: firstly, the angled leg lying on the surface offers a large surface area for impact and shear forces, which must be absorbed by the adhesive tension between the metal and the base material. Secondly, it was found that for joints that are outdoors, the high thermal conductivity of the metal leads to rapid expansion of the joint irons when exposed to sunlight, while the supporting structure undergoes this movement much more slowly.
This creates such strong shear forces between the angle and the underlying concrete structure that the breaking stress is exceeded and the angle iron loosens, so that it is ultimately only held in place by the anchoring iron.
In addition, laying the angle irons in the arrangement described above is tedious and time-consuming. For the anchoring iron, holes have to be made in the concrete structure. Finally, the wide side lying on the surface makes it difficult to check whether the mortar has been well pushed in everywhere.
To remedy these shortcomings, a new joint closure was developed which has proven itself very well for the first practical applications and which no longer has the disadvantages described above.
This joint closure is characterized in that a metallic angle profile is attached to protect the joint edge in such a way that the outer edge of one leg forms one edge of the joint, the leg running perpendicularly inwards along the joint wall, while the other leg is enclosed in the synthetic resin compound .
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings shows the usual joint formation.
2 is a cross section through an exemplary embodiment of a joint closure according to the invention.
3 shows how a joint closure according to the invention is installed.
4 is an isometric representation of a joint closure according to the invention.
The angle leg (1), which is included in the synthetic resin compound (2), is perforated at regular intervals to improve adhesion and more precise control of the pouring. In order not to have to make an unnecessarily deep recess in the supporting structure (3), an uneven angle profile was chosen.
In the position described above, the reinforcement effect of the claimed edges is guaranteed by the end of the shorter leg of the angle profile. It offers little surface area for impact stresses and, thanks to its rigidity, transfers and distributes these forces to the elastic synthetic resin mortar. Because the longer leg of the angle profile is completely embedded in the mortar, its adhesive surface is almost twice as large as is the case with a normal joint closure.
In addition there is the additional anchoring through perforation, which connects the leg with the synthetic resin mortar like with rivets.
A holding device simplifies the precise laying of angles. They are held together on the short legs by the clamps (7). With the adjustable supports (9), which are connected to the clamps by a cross member, the joint profiles are quickly brought to the desired level.
The following procedure has proven to be the best for laying the joint profiles: A liquid, polymerizable synthetic resin is applied to the cleanly cleaned surface of the concrete. After this primer has hardened, the angle profiles are laid using the holding device described above.
A soft cardboard, Pavatex or synthetic rubber strip (12), the thickness of which corresponds to the desired joint width and the lower end of which extends down into the concrete joint (5), is clamped between the vertical, short legs. This strip has the task of ensuring the constant joint spacing of the angle iron.
In addition, it prevents the synthetic resin mortar from bonding under the legs, which would create a rigid bridging of the joint. In order to prevent the angle from shifting sideways while pushing it under, these are held in place with some synthetic resin mortar. The synthetic resin mortar (13) is then introduced and pushed under the horizontal legs until it rises through the perforation (14).
After this first layer of mortar has hardened, the covering is applied (15).
All anchoring irons are omitted in this version. The joint closure described can only be achieved with synthetic resin mortar. The tensile and shear strength of these mortars are sufficiently large to distribute the strong forces that occur on the supporting structure. Synthetic resin mortars, which are particularly suitable for producing the joint closure, are described in Swiss patent number 416426.
For example, it would be impossible to finish the joint with a cement-bound mortar. The cement mortar mass attached over the wide leg would break out during the first blows on the angle profile.
