Filtre
Filtered
The present invention relates to a filter for fluids.
The invention relates more particularly, but not exclusively, to an autoclave filter of the type used in hospitals, in particular for the sterilization of instruments.
A hospital autoclave comprises an enclosure having a door for the introduction and withdrawal of instruments or other articles to be sterilized, an inlet for steam, means for connecting the enclosure to a source of vacuum, so that a vacuum can be created in the enclosure, and an air inlet. When a sterilization operation is to be carried out, the enclosure is connected to means for creating a partial vacuum, and after a determined time, the air inlet is opened to then allow the opening of the enclosure. and removal of instruments or other sterilized items. To avoid any risk of contamination of the sterilization chamber or its contents, the air supply is fitted with a filter.
An object of the present invention is to provide a filter suitable for this use and capable of retaining bacteria.
The filter forming the subject of the invention comprises a filter layer arranged between at least one pair of fluid-permeable support members, housed one inside the other, in close contact with the filter layer, these members. support having pores the size of which is designed to avoid any breakage of the filter layer, the opposite ends of these support members and the filter layer being sealed by immersion.
The expression sealed by immersion> covers in this case a process according to which one makes penetrate, for example by immersion, a liquid or plastic sealing material in the space to be sealed, this material then being solidified to form a tight seal. A suitable sealing material for this purpose is, for example, silicone rubber.
The term permeable organ as used in this text is intended to cover sintered metal and plastic materials, porous plastics, including plastic foams, as well as perforated metals and plastics.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the filter unit comprises two perforated metal cylinders arranged one inside the other, the distance between these cylinders being about 2.5 mm, end caps being provided at each end.
In another embodiment, the filter frame comprises an internal support member, on which is wound a fabric, the filter layer being placed on this fabric, then covered with a second fabric, the outer support member being arranged on this second fabric.
The inner cylinder is formed from a rolled sheet, the adjacent edges of the latter being spot welded at distances of about 12 mm, in order to avoid subsequent tearing of the filter fabric.
Before the cylinders are assembled to each other, a filter layer or strip formed by woven or felted glass fibers is wound several times, for example three times, around the inner cylinder to form a sort of paper. The outer cylinder, which is initially also in sheet form, is rolled over the inner cylinder carrying the fabric, and the adjacent edges are folded outward and held together by a fastening metal slide. .
Preferably, the perforated cylinders are of mild steel, plated with cadmium or other metal, and the end caps are of chrome-plated brass or the like.
Preferably, one of the end caps is provided with a threaded tubular connection element to allow attachment of the filter, for example, on the inlet pipe of an autoclave.
A filter of the type described can be provided with an external pre-filtering element in the form of a cap or a sleeve, for example made of synthetic or natural foam rubber and which can be slipped over the filter in order to come into close contact. with it and in tight contact with the edges of the end caps. This pre-filtering sleeve is advantageously made of flexible porous plastic material, capable of being washed periodically during its period of use. The main filter element does not necessarily have to be washable and can very well be discarded at the end of its period of use.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial sectional elevation of a filter covered with a pre-filtering sleeve.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the upper cap.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the lower cap.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the main filter element.
The filter comprises a perforated outer cylinder 10 and a perforated inner cylinder 11, an upper cap 12 and a lower cap 13.
On the inner perforated cylinder 11, three layers of a very high efficiency glass fiber filter layer or band 17 are wound and covered by the outer cylinder 10. The joint 14 of the two adjacent edges of the outer cylinder 10 is ensured at means of a slide 15 forming a closure member and which extends from the top to the base of this outer cylinder to retain the folded edges 16 of the latter.
The upper 12 and lower 13 caps, which have a rim, are then engaged on the ends of the main filter structure comprising the cylinders 10 and 11, the filter layer 17 made of glass fibers and the ends of the fixing slide 15.
The ends of the main filter structure are permanently bonded to the upper 12 and lower 13 caps by immersion sealing in silicone rubber. The material to be sealed is poured into a cap and then the main filter element potted, that is to say engaged in the cap. When the material to be sealed is vulcanized at one end, one proceeds in the same way for the other end. The material to be sealed penetrates all the spaces, as indicated at 18 in fig. 1. Thus, the air can only pass through the perfected cylinders 10 and 11 and the filter layer 17.
The cap 13 has a central orifice provided with a screw 19 for connecting the filter to the air inlet pipe of an autoclave. The dimensions of the orifice of the base cap 13 depend on the size of the filter and are chosen so as to limit the flow of fluid in order to avoid excessive stresses on the filter medium and the support structure thereof.
Before being put into use, the filter described above can be sterilized by steam, thanks to its construction, and in particular to the way in which the main structure is linked to the caps 12 and 13.
To give the filter a long machining time, a prefiltering cap or sleeve 20 of flexible porous plastic material, for example urethane resin foam, is engaged on the aforementioned filter. This pre-filtering cap can be washed from time to time when needed.
According to one variant, the filter layer can be reinforced by providing layers of filter material alternating with reinforcement sheets. The reinforced filter layer is formed on the inner perforated cylinder, either by wrapping a multi-layered tape or by alternately wrapping layers of filter material and reinforcing material, about three times around the inner cylinder. Such a reinforced filter medium has a structure which opposes the displacement of the fibers and the breaking of the pores, even when it is subjected to sudden variations in pressure.
