Rotary press for simultaneous printing in several colors The present invention relates to a rotary press for simultaneous printing in several colors, for example for printing banknotes, postage stamps and other valuable documents. .
Banknotes often have a background printed with different colored inks using a letterpress press or an offset printing process. It is known that it is difficult to photographically separate the elements of different colors forming such a background, and this constitutes an element of protection against imitations. In addition, it is very difficult for a forger to produce counterfeits in which the different colored elements of the background are perfectly identified.
In a known process for producing banknotes having a multi-colored protective background, this background is printed by means of a letterpress or by an offset printing process and the main design is applied to the paper during printing. a second separate operation, either on the same press or on another, by means of an intaglio printing plate obtained from original plates engraved by engraving artists in order to give them an invoice ensuring effective security .
In order to obtain a banknote even more difficult to imitate, it is essential to achieve a perfect registration between the back and the impression produced by the engraved printing plate. However, this result is very difficult to obtain when the two printing processes are carried out separately as mentioned above.
The rotary press according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a printing plate cylinder, an intaglio engraved printing plate fixed on said printing plate cylinder, a printing cylinder arranged to cooperate with the printing plate. vee, an inking device for bringing ink to the engraved plate, a wiping device for removing the ink from the surface of the engraved plate after it has been inked,
while leaving the ink in the recessed parts of the plate and a second inking device supplying ink according to a predetermined pattern on the wiped surface of the engraved plate in registration with the recessed engraved parts of said board.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the press forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic elevational view of this press.
Fig. 2 is a schematic view of a variant of the press shown in FIG. 1. The rotary press shown in fig. 1 comprises a plate cylinder 1 in contact with pressure with an impression cylinder 2, of the same diameter, said cylinders rotating at the same speed in the opposite direction, as indicated by the arrows a and b. A printing plate is mounted on the plate cylinder 1 and carries the main part of the design which is to be printed on a banknote.
Dry or wet sheets of paper are taken from a stack 3 by a device (not shown) and brought to be clamped: between the cylinders 1 and 2 where they receive the impression of the engraved plate.
The engraved board is supplied with ink from an inkwell 4 by means of a take-up roller 5, a distributor roller 6 and an inking roller 7 which is applied with pressure against the engraved board carried by the cylinder. 1. The circumference of the ink roller 7 is a whole sub-multiple of that of the plate cylinder 1.
An ink saving device is placed near the circumference of the plate cylinder 1, after the inking roller 7, considering the direction of rotation of the cylinder 1; this device comprises an endless belt 8 of rubberized felt, for example, not sant around two rollers 9, one of which drives it, while an additional roller 10 is provided to stretch it. The strip 8 is arranged so as to come into contact with the engraved plate and to remove the excess ink therefrom, this ink then being scraped from said strip by a scraper blade 11, from which it returns to the inkwell 4 for be reused.
Three known wiping devices are mounted near the circumference of the plate cylinder 1, after the ink saving device. Each wiping device comprises a strip 12 of wiping material, for example of cloth, paper, etc., drawn from one roll 13 and fed to another roll 14 passing over the guide rollers 15 and between an oscillating support member 16 and the surface of the etched board. These devices are set to wipe all the ink from the surface of the engraved plate, but leaving the ink in its recessed parts.
A certain number of plate-holder cylinders 17 are provided to produce a multicolored background, their number corresponding to that of the colors to be printed, ie two in the example shown in FIG. 1. On each of the cylinders 17 is fixed a typographic board corresponding to the part of the background design which must be printed in each color. Each cylinder 17, as it rotates, is in contact with a transfer roller 18 coated with an elastic material.
The transfer roller 18 also applies with pressure against the surface of the engraved plate carried by the cylinder 1, when the latter is adjacent to it. An ink of different color is supplied to each cylinder 17 by inking devices each of which comprises an inkwell 20, a take-up roller 21 which supplies the ink to a roller of composition 2.2 which oscillates transversely to its axis between the cylinder 21 and a steel cylinder 23. The cylinder 23 moves on its axis uniformly to distribute the ink on a roll of composition 24.
The ink is collected on the roller 24 by another steel roller 25 moving on its axis and transferred by a composition roller 26 to another steel sliding roller 27 from where it is transferred to two form rollers in composition 19 which are in contact with the surface of the cylinders 17 and ensure good distribution of the ink.
The transfer roller 18 receives a correctly marked impression of the designs, each of a different color, produced by the plates carried by the cylinders 17 and transfers this impression to the wiped part of the engraved plate. The impression thus formed on the intaglio engraved board is marked to correspond with the recessed parts of said board and it is understood that the length of the circumference of the transfer roller 18 must be a whole sub-multiple of that of the circumference of the cliché cylinder 1.
After the engraved plate carried by the cylinder dre 1 has passed the position where it is applied against the impression cylinder 2 and where the printing of the paper takes place, the ink remaining on the surface of the plate is wiped off by another wiping device similar to those described above and comprising a strip of paper, canvas or the like 28 passing, by shooting from a supply roll 29, between an oscillating support member 30 and the circumference of the board to reach another roll 31.
In operation, when the key-holder cylinder rotates in the dextrorotatory direction, according to fig. 1, and all the other cylinders and rollers rotate in synchronism with it, the engraved plate is inked by the ink roller 7 and the excess ink is removed by the tape 8 of the ink saver. Then, the surface of the plate is carefully wiped by the bands 12 of the three suction devices which are designed to leave ink in the hollow parts of the engraved plate, parts which ensure the impression of the main part. of the sin of the banknote.
The wiped surface of the plate then receives the two-color printing of the background design suitably marked with respect to the design of the engraved sheet, by means of the transfer roller 18. The inks applied by the transfer roller do not come. not in contact with the ink which has remained in the hollows of the engraved plate, as a result of the meniscus which. formed there during wiping. As a result, the design of the colored background is transferred to the surface of the engraved plate in such a way that there is no gap or overlap between the lines of the background design and those of the engraved part of the plate. .
A sheet of dry or wet paper 3, which has been brought by a device, not shown, to be clamped between the plate cylinder 1 and the printing cylinder 2, passes between the latter and receives an impression from the plate. in three colors, namely, a single color corresponding to the main engraved design and a background design in two colors, in a single pass. The sheet 3 is then taken on leaving the printing cylinder by a conventional chain conveyor indicated schematically at 32, and brought onto a stack 33.
The elastic material which covers the embossed roller 7 can be cut at a point corresponding to a part of the engraved plate intended to receive a seal or similar imprint which it is desired to reproduce on the banknote in the form of a print. in relief. Thus, this part of the engraved sheet comprising the seal is not inked by the inking roller 7 and the printing is obtained with one of the two background colors.
The arrangement shown in FIG. 2 is a variant for applying the background design to the surface of an intaglio engraved board 34, fixed around the plate cylinder 1. Two inking devices A and B, similar to those described above, are arranged for inking, each with an ink of a different color, boards 35 and 36 fixed around cylinders 17 and 17 'respectively. The boards 35, 36 are formed to correspond to the bottom surfaces of the design of the banknote to be produced in each of the colors.
The cylinders 17 and 17 'are each applied against an ink receiving roller 37, the diameter of which is the same as that of the cylinders 17 and 17' and to which the ink of the printing surfaces of the plates 35, 36 is correctly marked. The take-up roller 37 is also applied against the boards 38 carried by a plate cylinder 39. Each board 38 has the complete design of the background and is inked in two colors by the take-up roller 37 in accordance with the arrangement of the ink. transferred by the inking surfaces of the boards 35 and 36.
The boards 38 are applied with pressure against the inking roller 18 which, for its part, is mounted so as to ink the wiped surface of the embossed board 34 in accordance with the two-color design of the desired background, and in correspondence with the recessed parts of said board.
In order to avoid the contamination of the inks of the plates 35 and 36 with the ink deposited on the receiving roller 37 by the inking devices A and B respectively, wiping devices C and D have been provided for the plates. 35 and 36 respectively. These wiping devices are designed to wipe the inking surfaces of the boards after the transfer of the ink from the rollers 19 to the take-up roller 37 and before re-inking.
Each wiping device C and D comprises a strip of wiping material 40 such as paper, canvas, etc., passing around and between rollers 41, from a main roll 42. This particular arrangement makes it possible to obtain a background of which each line can be printed in a different color without interruption and without overlapping colors.
Thus, the lines of the drawing of the colored background are not only correctly marked with respect to the impression of the hollow board, but also the lines of the colored background and those of the drawing produced by the board are printed side by side without an interval. or superimposition, thus producing a color effect which cannot be obtained by superimposing intaglio printing on a previously printed background.
In addition, the uniformity of the background colors does not depend appreciably on the uniformity of the surface of the paper used to make the banknotes.
