[.a fig.
Rotary printing press. The present invention relates to a rotary printing press, in particular for printing in several colors, specially adapted for the printing of titles by engraved cliché in relief, intaglio or by indirect printing.
Securities and banknotes are generally printed by superimposing several impressions or elementary images obtained by different processes.
Certain areas known as protective screens or backgrounds are printed by raised or offset cliché to make counterfeiting almost impossible due to the difficulty (the selection, by photography, of the elements composing these backgrounds in several colors, and because of the perfect coincidence with which these elements are to be printed. Other prints, superimposed on the backgrounds, constitute the main part of the printed title, and they are generally executed with the aid of intaglio prints, a process which, starting from prototypes engraved on copper or steel with the help of a tool, it achieves a high degree of technical and artistic perfection, as well as good protection against counterfeiters.
We can also print titles by a unique printing process. But, for security reasons, these titles, of course, generally present backgrounds printed by relief or offset cliché with elementary images and colors applied, slum due to the main part being printed by intaglio cliché in tiiïé. single color.
It is well known that the printing by relief or intaglio cliché is based on the following principle: An inking device applies the ink to a printing element (cylinder, plate or the like) and the latter performs the printing when brought into contact with the paper.
On the other hand, indirect printing is based on the following principle: An ink device applies ink to an engraved element (plate, cylinder or other) and the latter prints the image on a rubber sheet or another suitable material which in turn effects the impression when brought into contact with the paper.
However, processes for printing in several colors have been known for many years. One of the most applied consists in printing on a sheet of paper or aLitre material a number of colored images superimposed using a number of engravings or clichés equal to the number of colors to be printed. In all the processes of this type, the main difficulty is to make the superposed elementary images exactly coincide, which are generally and respectively printed in different colors.
Another known process for printing in several colors consists in inking a single engraving or a single plate with several inks of different colors, distributed in different areas of the plate, and then printing on paper or other suitable material. , in a single operation, all the colors side by side presented by the cliché. These printing processes, which are completely different from one another, also require different presses for their implementation.
In intaglio printing, it is not possible to superimpose two or more colors printed by two or more elements of the same press. This is because the still fresh ink of the first image or elementary color comes into contact with another printing element, so that it is not only soiled by the large amount of ink. is necessary for intaglio printing, but also soils the printing element (plate, cylinder or other), so that the result is a blurring of colors and elementary images.
While there are currently presses with many components for relief cliché printing and for indirect multi-color printing, no press with more than one component for multi-color printing is known. their by hollow cliché.
It is known that intaglio printing is generally performed on previously moistened paper. This is because, in intaglio printing, the paper must be pressed into the indentations in the cliché to receive the ink they contain. This operation requires strong pressure between the pressure roller and the press. cliché, between which the paper passes during printing. Since the paper used for title printing must have high strength, and therefore is very hard, the use of the dry paper would require enormous pressure for intaglio printing.
Apart from the fact that presses capable of providing sufficient pressure are very rare, the paper subjected to this high pressure is modified in its dimensions. As a result, it is not possible to obtain a large number of intaglio prints with dry paper.
The repeated printing by intaglio printing, with moistened paper, naturally requires successive operations of humming and drying the paper. However, we know. that the operations of oiling and drying modify the dimensions of the paper in such a way that the sheets present d-s differences. It is not. it is therefore not possible to obtain a perfect coincidence of several superimposed images and elementary colors.
As a result, if wet paper is used, intaglio printing with superposed elementary images and colors can be achieved for a small number of such images and colors, while multiple color printing, at , using a single cliché on which several inks of different colors are applied side by side, can be achieved with a large number of images and elementary colors.
The printing plate ensures printing in one operation.
It is also known that, during intaglio printing, the surface of the printing plate is. cleaned by sweeping and polishing before each printing for the elimination of ink deposited on the cliché and not pressed into the recesses.
Until now, this cleaning has been carried out by friction. successive pallets, fabrics, pa pier, rolls, etc. on the cliché, some of the said elements can be combined. These polishing positives did not allow. not printing in several colors with colors arranged side by side on a single shot. Indeed, as a result of friction and necessarily repeated passages, polishing devices of this kind would necessarily entail. the mixture of the different colors retained in the hollows of the cliché.
The cleaning operation, performed using a single sweeping cylinder rotating at the same relative speed as the printing element (as in other known methods), cannot be applied because the Scanning cylinder should rotate at a higher stop than that of the printing element.
In fact, since the inks for intaglio printing of titles must be very thick, it is difficult to remove them from the plate. For this reason, it is necessary for the scanning cylinder to rub against the printing element, so that the removal of excess multi-color inks applied to the intaglio can be performed.
It is evident that the phis great speed of the scanning cylinder, compared to that (the printing element, constitutes the factor which determines the perfect cleaning of the intaglio inked in several colors.
In addition, it is well known that sheets printed by the method using an etched plate are given an ink thickness which is determined by the depth of the depressions. Since the drying of this ink layer requires a certain period of time, it is necessary to interpose another sheet between the printed sheets. This interposition has always been carried out by hand with the perpetual risk of friction. accidental of the interlayer sheet on the printed sheet and the consequent destruction of the print.
Until now, no press can perform multi-color printing by hollow, relief or indirect printing, without any modification of certain mechanical parts, to give direct printing in several colors starting from a single cliché in intaglio or relief, or an indirect impression with elementary images and colors superimposed starting (the several clichés or other elements of impression.
In the field of titles, no press can so far perform the printing in several colors of the backgrounds by printing block or indirect printing, or printing in several colors by intaglio of the main part. It is. It is therefore necessary to print the paper by successive operations in different presses. The present invention relates to a press, particularly suitable for printing titles, which tends to eliminate all the aforementioned drawbacks.
The rotary printing press forming the subject of the invention comprises a first rotary cylinder provided with means for holding at least one element intended to be brought into contact with a blank sheet in order to primer it, a second rotary cylinder of the same diameter as the first, rotating in the opposite direction, but at the same speed as the latter, with which it is in contact, means being provided on this second cylinder to maintain on its surface sheets supplied by a first supplier, several supports arranged facing the periphery of the first rotary cylinder and on which a corresponding number of inking rollers are removably mounted, several inking units being mounted on a mobile carriage allowing them to be brought into contact with said open rollers,
a cleaning device constituted by a scanning cylinder capable of being put into action to remove excess ink in the case where a debossed plate is fixed on said first rotary cylinder, another rotary cylinder to remove the ink ink from the scanning cylinder, the cleaning device being adjacent to the periphery of said first rotary cylinder and disposed after said rollers, and a conveyor for picking up the printed sheets from said second cylinder, picking up interlayers delivered by a second supplier and to place the printed sheets with the intermediate sheets on a reception table.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the press forming the subject of the invention. For greater clarity, the transmission mechanisms and shafts interconnecting the various parts of the press have been omitted, but the constitution and arrangement of these mechanisms are obvious to the technician.

Fig. 5 shows one of the claws of the endless conveyor as it grips the interlayer sheet.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the part of the pressure cylinder containing the mechanism for removing the sheet from the furnace and for transmitting this sheet to the jaws of the endless conveyor.
Figs. 7 and 8 show how the ink rollers ink a cliché (the length of this cliché has been managed somewhat).
Fig. 9 is a sectional view of an inking roller mounted in an off-center bearing. Fig. 10 is a sectional view taken along the line <B> A -A '</B> of FIG. 9.
Fig. 11 is a side elevational view of the flange of the off-center bearing mounted on the frame of the press, and provided with a handwheel, a scale and an index for adjusting the pressure.
The press shown comprises a frame 1 in which a plate cylinder 2 (fig. 1) is rotatably mounted on a shaft 3. This <I> cylinder </I> linder has two opposite seats in the form of sectors 4 and 5 on which printing elements 6 and 7 can be attached (clichés). Screws 8, 9, 10 and 11 acting on claws 12, 13, 14 and 15, intended for fixing the printing or transfer elements 6 and 7, allow the exact centering of their position on cylinder 2. A To this end, a graduation in millimeters is engraved on both edges of the sectors of cylinder 2. Shaft 3 is linked to the press motor shaft by transmission members.
The arrangement of the motor and these components is known and not shown in the drawing. In the frame 1 are mounted five supports <B> 16, </B> 17, 18, 19 and 20. When the press is used for printing in several colors using a single cliché inked by inking rollers, rollers 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 are rotatably mounted in a removable manner in these supports. The same ink rollers can be used for embossed or intaglio printing. For indirect printing, the inking rollers in the supports 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 are replaced by engraved cylinders.
A sweeping and cleaning device is mounted in the frame in the position shown in fig. 1. It is constituted (fig. 2) by a sweeping cylinder 26 coated with a flexible material, or entirely made of flexible material, and mounted for rotation in the frame of the press. This cylinder 26 rotates in the same direction as the cylinder 2, and it is connected by a transmission mechanism to the press motor. It is also animated by a back and forth movement not in phase with its rotation, and it turns at. fine determined peripheral speed greater than that of the cliché cylinder 2.
The scavenging cylinder exerts a frictional action on 1a. surface of the cliché (s) each time he has to clean them. The contact between the cylinder 26 and the plate (s) of the cylinder 2 takes place virtually along a line. The scanning operation is therefore carried out without resulting in a removal or a mixture of the colors compressed in the hollows of the clichés by the inking rollers. The adjustment of the pressure exerted by the cylinder 26 against the cli ché (s) of the cylinder 2 is obtained by means of an off-center bearing in which the shaft of the cylinder 26 rotates. A metal cylinder 27 is mounted in the frame of press and occupies the position indicated on the fia. 1.
The diameter of cylinder 27 (fig. 2) is greater than. that of the cylinder 26, so that it has a larger surface sweeping the cylinder 26. Thanks to this larger surface, and to the also greater speed of the cylinder 27, the ink removed from the cylinder 26 adheres in a layer. very thin at the surface of the cylinder 27. The adjustment of the pressure exerted by the cylinder 27 on the cylinder 26 is obtained by means of an off-center bearing in which the shaft of the cylinder 27 rotates. This cylinder 27 rotates in the same direction as the cylinder 26, but at a determined peripheral speed greater than that of the cylinder 26.
The cylinder 27 is not driven by a back-and-forth movement because it benefits from that of the cylinder 26. It is driven in rotation by the cylinder 26 using a mechanism of transmiµsion. The scanning of the cylinder 26 by the cylinder 27 takes place according to the principle which is applied to the cleaning of the clichés by the cylinder 26.
A group of nozzles 28 extends over the entire width of cylinder 27 in the position shown in FIG. 2. These nozzles project a powerful jet of liquid onto the cylinder 27, slightly in the direction of a secant around the periphery of the cylinder 27 and in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of this cylinder. The liquid jets remove ink from the. cylinder 27 by a mechanical action exerted by the power, the pressure and the direction of the jets.
The assembly is surrounded by a screen to which is connected a flow conduit 29. This screen collects all the liquid and ink removed from the cylinder 27 by the liquid jets in order to evacuate it via the circuit 29.
The nozzles are followed by a squeegee 30 moved back and forth. This scraper touches the cylinder 27 tangentially and occupies the position shown in FIG. 2. It is mounted on a support 31 provided with adjusting screws 32 and 33, and prevents a thin film of ink, possibly remaining on the cylinder 27 despite cleaning, from returning to the cylinder 26.
Another group of nozzles 34 is arranged between the scraper 30 and the point where the rolls 26 and 27 touch each other (FIG. 2). These nozzles are intended to project several jets of hot air onto the peripheral surface of the cylinder 27 in order to eliminate all traces of humidity therefrom. Under these conditions, the washing and cleaning operation takes place as follows: The cylinder 26 cleans the clichés carried by the cylinder 2, and the cylinder 27 cleans the cylinder 26. The jets of liquid projected by the nozzles 28 clean the cylinder 27. The squeegee 30 completes the cleaning of the cylinder 27, while the jets of hot air projected by the nozzles 34 dry the cylinder 27.
Thanks to this sweeping and polishing device, the operation is carried out in an uninterrupted manner.
A pressing cylinder 38 (FIG. 1), having the same diameter as the cylinder 2, is rotatably mounted in the frame 1 so that it exerts an adjustable pressure on the cylinder 2. This cylinder 38 carries at one end a toothed ring which meshes with a toothed wheel of cylinder 2. The former is therefore dragged by the latter and, of course, in an opposite direction of rotation. On the cylinder 38 are provided a few claws which grip the sheets of paper on the supplier and hold them on the peripheral surface of the cylinder until the end of printing, after which these sheets are gripped by claws mounted on chains which drag them to the reception table and place them on it.
Automatic suppliers 39 and 91 (Fig. 1) of sheets to be printed and of interleaves are of the sheet-by-sheet feed type and include all sheet feeders. These suppliers can work with dry or wet paper and feed the press for printing with one or two clichés. These suppliers are equipped with mechanisms for advancing the sheets well centered and square. A descending ramp 40 brings the sheets of paper to the upper part of the pressure roller 38. At this point is seen a bar 41 rotating on an axis 42. The bar 41 is controlled by a connecting rod 43 articulated at the end of a lever 44 integral with a shaft 45.
This shaft carries another lever which is not shown in the drawing and which cooperates with an eccentric sector integral with the cylinder 38. This sector oscillates this other lever as well as the lever 44, which in turn causes the bar 41 to oscillate by through the connecting rod 43. When this bar 41 oscillates, it lets a sheet of paper pass which it has previously stopped.
Five inking groups are mounted on a carriage 51 provided with rollers 52 by which it can move on rails provided in the frame 1 (FIG. 1). The carriage can be locked in the working position by pins 53 (one on each side of the carriage) which engage in hooks 54. FIG. 1 indicates four inking groups in elevation and another group in cross section. Each group has a dispensing ink tank 55, one wall of which is formed by a rotating roller 56, and a series of rollers 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63 and 64 which transmit the ink from the roller 56. to rollers 65 and 66.
The rollers 58, 59, 60 are also axially reciprocated for uniform distribution and grinding of the ink. The rollers 61, 62, 63, 64 are intended to transmit the ink from the roller 58 to the roller 60.
The rollers 65 and 66 are rotatably mounted on adjustable oscillating supports, in order to ensure perfect contact between the rollers 65, 66 and the inking rollers 21, 22, 23, 24, 25. From phis, these supports comprise a micrometric adjustment device for the passage of ink.
When the carriage 51 is engaged in the hooks 54, one or more inking units can be stopped simply by opening the corresponding supports 67, 68 or by disengaging it using a coupling device 70.
The roller drive mechanism is mounted in housings 69 and 71. 3l. is connected to a transmission worm, parallel to the rails of the carriage 51 and coupled to the motor of the press.
It should be noted that the groups in creurs can work as well when the carriage occupies its. working position only when it is moved away from the five open rollers.
This possibility allows the automatic washing of the inking units and their first adjustment.
The inking units of this press allow perfect inking for printing by relief or intaglio cliché and for indirect printing. They provide very fine grinding, as required for raised cliché printing and indirect printing, and they are also capable of supplying the ink rollers with the amount of ink required for filling. hollows of the hollow cliché. In addition, these groups allow a micrometric adjustment of the passage of the ink, which ensures that the ink is always identical and, consequently, an impression also always identical.
It is therefore possible to carry out all the printing jobs in five colors by keying in intaglio or relief, or. by indirect printing, with the same press and without any modification of the mechanical parts.
Along two diametrically opposed generatrices of said cylinder 38 (FIG. 6) are mounted two shafts 136 and 137, along which groups of claws are arranged. [.a fig. 6 shows a claw 50 mounted on shaft 136 and another claw 135 mounted on shaft 137.
On the shaft 136 are Axis two levers 138 and 139 in two different planes. Similar levers 140 and 141 are fixed in the same manner on the shaft <B> 13Î. </B> Two other levers 142 and 143 are attached to the shafts 137 and 136, respectively. The levers 142 and 143 are connected to one another. to the other by a device exerting opposing forces on these levers. This device consists of a rod 144, articulated at one end to the lever 142 by a swivel 145 and of which. the opposite end is secured in a tube 146 which is hinged to the lever 143 by a journal 147. In this way, the rod 144 can slide in the tube 146.
At the end of this tube is provided a thrust washer 148 and on the rod 144 is fixed a ring 149 to. using a clamping screw <B> 150. </B> Between the washer 148 and the bagaè 149 is interposed a. compression spring 151 surrounding the rod 144. Two pins 152 and 153 are fixed to the frame 1 of the press. The pin 152 is placed near the lower end of the ramp 40 of the supplier 39. The pin 153 is placed near the edge of a conveyor 73 (Fig. 1).
When the lever 141 strikes the spindle 153 during the rotation of the cylinder 38, the shaft <B> 137 </B> oscillates and the claw 135 assumes the position shown in fig. 6 shows for the claw 50. At the same time, the lever 138 strikes the spindle 752, so that the claw 50 is pressed against its seat 155, taking the position shown in fig. 6 shows for the claw 135. A similar seat 154 is provided for the claw 135.
The endless conveyor 73 (fig. 1), composed of two parallel chains, is mounted on idler sprockets 74, <B> 75, </B> 76, 77, 78 and 79. The sprockets 76 are fitted with a device for tensioning the chains. This tensioning device is constituted by a frame 80 (FIG. 3), fixed to the frame 1 of the press and the branches 81 and 82 of which overlap a slider 83. In this slider is mounted the shaft 84 carrying the pinions 76. A screw 85 makes it possible to move the slider 83. A screen 86, fixed by a rod;: u slider 83, prevents the sheets from abutting against the device supplying interleaves.
The chains of the endless conveyor carry claws 87. These claws are spaced from each other at a distance equal to the peripheral distance between the claws 50 and 135 of the cylinder 38 (FIG. 1). The endless conveyor moves in the direction indicated by arrow A in fig. 1 and at a speed equal to the peripheral speed of the cylinder 38. A transmission mechanism connecting the cylinder 38 to the drag gears 74 ensures that this speed is obtained. Below the endless conveyor 73 are provided air nozzles 89. These nozzles blow their jets of air up and down and in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the conveyor.
A compressed air tank, not shown, supplies the air necessary for this purpose. The endless conveyor drives the printed sheets to an interlayer sheet interposing device, arranged as shown in FIG. 1 and shown in detail in FIG. 3. This device comprises an inclined ramp 90, connected to an automatic supplier 91 (FIG. 1) which may be of any known type. In the embodiment shown, this supplier is of the same type as the supplier 39.
A shaft 92 is rotatably mounted in the frame 1 below the ramp 90 and connected by a transmission mechanism to the motor of the press, with a transmission ratio such that a complete revolution of cylinder 2 corresponds to two turns of the shaft 92. On this shaft are fixed two diametrically opposed cams 93 and 94, which are not posed in the same plane. The cam 93 acts on a roller 95 mounted for rotation at one end of a lever 96 pivoting about an axis 97 (FIG. 3). The other end of this lever 96 carries a sector 98 to which is tangent the inclined ramp 90 and a lateral arm 104 provided with a pallet 105 intended to retain the sheets of paper. A spring 182, acting on the lever 96, biases the roller 95 in the direction of the shaft 92.
The cam 94 acts on a roller 99 mounted for rotation at one end of a lever 100 pivoting on an axis 101. The other end of this lever 100 is connected by a connecting rod 102 to a lever 103 provided with a cam 103. 'intended to lift a roller 106. The latter is rotatably mounted on a rod 107 smoothing neck in a guide 108 fixed to the frame 1. A spring housed in this guide pushes the rod 107 up and down. A spring 114 acts on the lever 103 and biases the roller 99 in the direction of the shaft 92. The roller 106 can engage on the path of the leaves on the inclined ramp 90. In the position shown in FIG. 3, a sheet of paper descending on the ramp 90 can pass between the roller 106 and the ramp 90, and it is stopped by the pallet 105.
As shaft 92 rotates, cam 94 pushes back roller 99 and rotates lever 1.03 so that roller 106 contacts sector 98 of lever 96 and the sheet of paper is clamped between these elements. . During the consecutive rotation of the shaft 92, the cam 93 lifts the roller 95, and the lever 96 pivots on its journal 97. At the same time, the pallet 105 lowers and the sheet of paper is advanced through the sector 98 and the roller 106. The sheet is then gripped by the claws 87 in the manner described below. The claws 87 are represented more clearly in FIGS. 4 and 5. They are assembled in rows on shafts carried by two chains, to be fixed on the same transverse line of the conveyor.
These claws are formed by a frame <B> 115 </B> in which shafts 116, 117 and 118 are mounted. These also carry the other claws arranged between the two chains on the same line as the claw shown on the picture. fig. 4. On the shaft 116 is fixed a hub 119 provided with a boss 120 in which is. recessed a seat 121 of rubber or another similar material, against which the end of fingers 122 and 123 rests. The finger 122 is integral with the shaft <B> 117 </B> which is mounted for rotation in the frame 115. To this shaft is also fixed a lever 124 at the end of which a roller 125 is rotatably mounted. A spring l26 urges the shaft 117 so as to apply the finger 122 against the seat 121.
The finger 123 is fixed to the shaft 118 which is also mounted rotatably in the frame <B> 115. </B> To this shaft is also fixed a lever 127 which carries at its end a roller 128. A spring corresponding 129 applies the finger 123 against the seat 121. The levers 124 and 127 lie are not arranged in the same plane, although they are parallel. It can be seen that, when the levers 127 and 124 are lowered, the fingers 122 and 123 are moved away from the seat 121.
The operation of these claws is. the following: The drive pinion shaft 74 (fig. 4) carries two parallel cams 130 and 131 arranged so that, when each group of claws 87 arrives on the pressure cylinder 38, these cams simultaneously push back the rollers <B > 125 </B> and <B> 128, </B> thus separating the fingers 122 and 123 from the common seat 121. At this moment., The device of the cylinder 38 deposits a printed sheet in the interval between the seat 121 and fingers 7.22 and 123. As soon as the action of cams 130 and. : 131 ceases, fingers 122 and l23 close and hand hold the sheet against seat 121.
Opposite the device for the interposition of the intermediate sheets, the group of claws 87 intervenes in the manner indicated on <B> fi-. </B> 5. The shaft 84 of the pinions 76 carries a cam 132. This cam is placed on the path of roller 128, but not on it of roller 125. When a group of claws arrives opposite the device supplying the intermediate sheets, the lever 127 is lowered by means of the roller 128, and finger 123 opens, while finger 122 continues to hold the printed sheet.
At this time, and as described above, the pallet 105 lowers and allows an interlayer sheet to slide on the inclined ramp 90 and to enter the gap between the finger 123 and the seat 121 As soon as the action of the cam 132 ceases, the finger 123 closes and thus retains the interlayer sheet. This sheet is then pulled by the finger. 123 at the same time as the printed sheet is driven by the finger 122. To the pinion shaft 77 are fixed two cams 133 and 131, of the same shape as the cams 130 and 131. When the rollers 125 and 128 are repelled by these cams, they open the claws. The sheets, - printed and insert, are thus released and can fall on the table 110.
The receiving table <B> 110 </B> (fig. 1) is placed in such a way that it can receive the printed sheets and inserts deposited by the claws 8 7 when they reach the sprockets 77.
As the stack of leaves rises, the receiving table should descend, so keep the top of the stack level below the inclined ramp 90 (fig. 3). For this purpose, the receiving table <B> 110 </B> is fixed to a ratchet mechanism <B> 111 </B> actuated by a lever l.12 connected to a brandy 113 of the lever 96. When this lever 96 rotates to pass an interlayer sheet, the branch 113 also oscillates and rotates the shaft 135 through the lever 112. The rotational movement of the shaft 135 does. get off the reception table 110.
The inking rollers (or engraved rollers) are arranged as shown in FIG. 9, which is a sectional view of an inking roller (or engraved roller) with all the members controlling its radial, circular and axial movements.
The shaft 207 (fig. 9) of the inking roller is mounted in a bearing 200 by a ball bearing 201. A nut 210 is used to block the ball bearing 201 in the bearing 200. On the shaft 207 is fixed a pinion 21I . This pinion meshes with a toothed wheel of cylinder 2, so that the inking roller is driven in rotation by this cylinder and, of course, in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the latter.
The bearing 200 is mounted on the frame 1 of the press and it is closed by a flange 212 in which is rotatably mounted a nïanmuvre 203. This maneuvering wheel is secured to a small pinion 216 in engagement with a toothed sector. 217 fixed to the off-center bearing 200.
It results from this reduction between the pinion 216 of the flywheel and the toothed sector 217 that a rotational movement of the flywheel produces a micrometric movement of the off-center bearing and, consequently, a micrometric approximation or spacing between the inking roller and the cliché cylinder.
Fig. 11 is a front view of the flange 212 and of the handwheel 203. This flange which is fixed to the frame of the press by bolts and nuts 213, and it has a graduation 214 opposite which can move a index 215, indicating the pressure exerted by the ink roller on the cliché.
Fig. 9 shows that the roller shaft 207 is locked in the bearing 200. A screw 204, which is of course also provided on the opposite side not shown in the drawing, can be screwed or unscrewed, thus producing a micrometric axial displacement of shaft 207 and, consequently, of the indented roller, with respect to cylinder 2.
Fig. 9 also shows a section of the ink roller and its main elements. It can be seen that the roller comprises a tu bular body 209 which constitutes the main part, a flexible covering 205 and 206 whose construction depends on the printing mode, two flanges 227 provided at the ends of the tubular body 209 and allowing the fixing of the latter on shaft 207.
The two flanges 227 respectively carry two yokes 217 and 218 which can be seen better in FIG. 10 and in which are engaged two micrometric screws 219 and 220 with knurled knobs which bear against the boss 22J integral with the flange 227. By screwing the screw 219 and unscrewing the screw 220 at the same time, or vice versa, one produces a micrometric rotational movement of the flange 227. Since the flange 227 maintains the tubular body 209 in the direction of rotation, it. This results in a micrometric rotational movement of the entire roller around the shaft, which allows perfect centering of the coating of the roller facing the engraving of the cliché.
Two pointed teeth 221, pressed by springs 222 and 223 into the teeth of the knurled knobs of screws 219 and 220, prevent the latter from unscrewing during operation of the press. .
After the perfect centering of the flexible coating of the ink roller, two bolts 226 and 225 make it possible to block the assembly of this roller. In summary, the ink rollers for embossed or intaglio printing, or the engraved cylinders for indirect printing, can be moved radially with the aid of the off-center bearing, and this radial movement allows the variation to be made. pressure exerted by the rollers or cylinders respec tively on the cliché or the re port blanket. The inking rollers or engraved cylinders can also undergo axial and circular displacement for exact centering with respect to the cliché, as will be described later.
During embossed or intaglio printing, the soft coating of the five ink rollers of the press is not. left only on the parts which must receive ink to transmit it to the corresponding parts of the cliché. Therefore, it is possible to print titles in a single operation and with a single cliché, in this way to complete the engraving line (sins) and to change the colors at the desired points. In addition, it is possible to obtain during printing the desired degrees of pressure between the ink roller and the printing plate. This results in an always identical compression of the flexible coating of the roll and, consequently, an always identical color of the titles made by printing using intaglio or relief clichés.
The perfect coincidence of the indirect printing with colors and superimposed elementary images is always ensured, because the five engraved cylinders 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 are driven in rotation by a single toothed wheel integral with cylinder 2. The parts engraved on the cylinders 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 touch. therefore always the same identical points of common transfer elements 6 and 7, which transfer the image composed on the paper in a single operation.
For intaglio printing, the operation of the press is as follows. The intaglio print (s) 6 and 7 (Fig. 1) are fixed on cylinder 2 in the desired position. For this purpose, use is made of the graduations in millimeters drawn on the edges of the plate holder sectors 4 and 5 as well as the lines engraved on the plates. Fixing on sectors 4 and 5 takes place using claws 12, 13, 14, 15. The inking rollers 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 are mounted in their supports 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 Their adjustment is carried out using off-center bearings and their own mechanisms allowing axial and circular micrometric displacements.
Then, a first adjustment of the inking units, mounted on the carriage 51, is carried out in order to obtain on the rollers 65 and 66 the quantity of ink necessary for the printing by intaglio cliché.
The carriage 51 is approached, with the inking groups, of the inking rollers and it is engaged in the hooks 54 using the pins 53.
The final adjustment of the inking is then carried out until the inking rollers 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 receive the quantity of ink necessary for filling the hollows of the cliché (s).
When the inking is perfect, we adjust the cleaning of the clichés. This adjustment is obtained by varying the pressure exerted by the cylinder 26 on the clichés until the scanning cylinder fulfills its role perfectly.
After the aforementioned operations, one enters takes the impression. A sheet of paper (dry or wet) from the supplier 39 slides on the ramp 40 and is retained by the bar 41. When this bar, connected to a transmission mechanism, pivots around its axis 42, the sheet can pass freely. and it is gripped by a group of claws 135 which close and pull the sheet onto the cylinder 38. Of course. this operation is preceded by another, by which the sheet is perfectly centered and oriented square. This is ensured by known mechanisms.
During this operation, the cylinder 2 rotates and the cliché 7 which it carries successively comes into contact with the indented rollers 21, 22, 23, 24, 25. Each of these rolls deposits on the cliché 7 a different ink. annuity. As shown in Figures <B> 7 </B> and <B> 8, </B> the peripheral surface of each of the inking rollers is contoured to present raised inking areas 156, 157, 158 , 159, 160, the shape of which corresponds exactly to that of the areas to be inked 155th, 155a., 155b, <B> 155th </B> and 155d of the cliché. As the cliché advances, the ink rollers roll over its surface and deposit the ink in the appropriate places. Of course, the ink rollers can be made by any known method.
Returning to fig. 1, it can be seen that the cli ché 7 thus inked with several different inks comes into contact with the scanning cylinder 26 which removes from its surface the excess ink which has not been compressed in the hollows of the cliché. This operation takes place without any removal and without any mixing of the inks contained in the hollows. On the contrary, thanks to its operation as described above, the scanning cylinder not only cleans the surface of the cliché, but further compresses the inks contained in the pits.
The cliché 7, inked and cleaned, then arrives on the sheet of paper driven and pressed by the cylinder 38 and performs the printing on this sheet.
The result is an intaglio printing with five side-by-side colors distributed in the desired areas.
The sheet of paper is still hand held by the claws 135 until their lever 141 strikes the pin 153 which opens the claws (fig. 1 and 6). At this moment, a group of claws 87 rotates around the pinions 74 and their levers 124 and 127 (FIG. 4), actuated by the cams 130 and 131, temporarily keep the fingers 122 and 123 open. These fingers therefore grasp the printed sheet and press it against the seat 121. The group of claws 87 drives the sheet in the direction of the arrow A (fig. 1) until it reaches the pinions 76.
At this time, the finger 123 of the claws 87 (fig. 5) opens in the manner previously described to grip the slip sheet from the supplier 91, so that the printed sheet and the slip sheet are fed by the same group. claws up to the pinions 77. The claws 87 then open and simultaneously release the two sheets which are deposited on the receiving table 110.
It should be noted that the printed sheet follows the path indicated by the arrow A, with the printed side facing down, and. that it is turned over on the gears 76, so that the interlayer sheet is pressed against the reverse side (not printed) of the sheet. When the two sheets fall on the reception table, they are deposited exactly plumb on the sheets previously laid down, so that any friction is thus avoided.
While the printed sheet is being dragged by the conveyor, it is supported by jets of air blown by the nozzles 89.
The described operation is repeated indefinitely., And two sheets are printed by the clichés 6 and 7 at each revolution of the cylinder 2. Of course, the press can also operate with a single cliché.
For printing by relief cliché, the press operates in a manner identical to that which has just been described, except that the following modifications are provided for: The supplier 91 is stopped.
2 'The scanning device is deleted. 3 The intaglio image (s) is (are) replaced by relief images.
For indirect printing, the press works exactly as for intaglio printing, except that the following modifications are made 1 - The supplier is stopped 91.
2 The scanning device is removed. 3 The intaglio 6 and 7 are replaced by two rubber blankets or another material suitable for transfer, allowing indirect printing.
4 The ink rollers are replaced by five rollers (which can be copper, zinc, brass or any other suitable material), previously engraved by one of the many processes for indirect printing.
During indirect printing, the inking units apply their inks to the engraved rolls, these successively print their own image and elementary color on the rubber blankets fixed to sectors 4 and 5 of cylinder 2, and the blankets then transfer the composed image to the paper. In this way, a printing is obtained in five colors which can be superimposed or arranged side by side.
During printing, the sectors 48 and '49 of cylinder 38 (fig. 1) carrying the cut back pressure liners are prepared in the known manner for the various printing modes, because it is posed. sible to prepare each rubber for this purpose.
It is clear from the description of the operation of the press how easily and quickly it is possible to switch from one printing process to another without modifying the mechanical parts.
The press and all of its auxiliary devices previously described have been specially designed for printing titles, but it is understood that the assembly can also be used for other printing, in this case of geographical maps or others, of same as printing on other materials such as fabrics, plastics, etc.
