Combination lock The present invention relates to a combination lock, comprising several annular discs arranged in a housing so as to be able to be driven in rotation about the same axis concentric with all the discs, each disc having a notch for release the passage of a lock, a single control member allowing the operation of the various disks.
This combination lock is characterized by the fact that it comprises a pawl resiliently returned to a rest position, this pawl being connected to the single control member intended to give, to said pawl, angular movements back and forth around it. of said same axis, during its maneuvers, each disc having, on the one hand, a stop with which the pawl can cooperate during one of its forward movements to cause the angular displacement of the disc having this stop and, on the other hand , an internal sector joined to this stop, on which the pawl is guided during its return movement,
the angle over which each internal sector extends corresponding to the rank of its sign in the combination, this angle also being of just sufficient value to allow the pawl to fall on the sector of the next disc, close to the stop of that here, at the end of its return movement, so as to be in position for the operation of this next disc, and so on for all the discs.
The accompanying drawing shows, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of this combination lock.
Fig. 1 is an axial sectional view of this lock. Fig. 2 is a view of the lock showing its control member.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the interior of the lock once the housing is open, the members of this lock being shown in the open position.
Fig. 4 is an internal view of the upper part of the housing.
Figs. 5 to 11 represent diagrams showing, in developed view, the internal edge of the annular discs; included in this lock, in various positions.
This lock comprises a housing consisting of a lower part 1, covered by an upper part 2 fitting onto part 1 in the manner of a cover. Part 1 of the housing has several bearing surfaces in crowns of circles 3. A guide pin 4 is provided in the center of part 1. In addition, this part 1 has a countersink 5 intended to receive the latch 6 of the lock.
A series of annular discs 7 are arranged on the respective surfaces 3 of part 1 of the housing. All these discs 7 are therefore arranged concentrically. The upper part 2, or cover, of the housing has in its central part a bore 8, in which is engaged a pin 9. The outer end of this pin 9 carries a control disc 10, while its inner end has a recess. 11 by which said pin 9 engages on the guide pin 4.
This disc 10 has a recessed part 12 inside which is arranged a spring 13 with spirals. The inner end of this spring 13 is hooked to the pin 9, while its outer end is hooked to a pin 14 fixed to part 2 of the housing. This spring 13 tends to continuously return the disc 10 to a position determined by a stop not shown in the drawing.
As seen in fig. 2, the disc 10 has apertures 15 arranged in a circle around the center of rotation of this disk 10. The signs of the combination are shown on part 2 of the lock housing and appear in the apertures 15 of the lock. disk 10. In the example shown, these signs are numbers, but they can be any, for example letters.
Part 2 of the housing carries a stopper 16. This disc 10 with openings 15 and this stopper 16 make it possible to maneuver the control disc 10 in the same way as a telephone disc. Thus, the combination can be dialed in the same way as a telephone number.
The internal part of the axis 9 carries a drum-shaped part 17, made rigidly integral with the axis 9 by a screw 18 engaged between the axis 9 and the central part of the drum 17. This drum 17 has a countersink 19 in which is disposed a pawl 20. This pawl 20 is articulated in the countersink 19 along an axis 21 (see FIG. 1). A spring 22 is fixed on the pawl 20 by screws or rivets 23. The end of this spring 22 bears against the bottom of the groove 19 and therefore tends to push the free end of the pawl 20 towards the bottom of the part 1 of the housing.
This pawl 20, which is resiliently returned to the rest position, is therefore angularly secured to the control disc 10 which allows to give an angular movement back and forth to said pawl 20, each time the disc 10 is operated. This pawl 20 is intended to allow the successive drive of the annular discs 7, as and when the composition of the combination.
Each annular disc 7 has, on the one hand, a stop 24 with which the pawl 20 cooperates during one of its forward movements, controlled by the disc 10, to cause the angular displacement of the disc 7 having this stop and, of on the other hand, an internal sector 25, joined to this stop 21., sector 25 on which the pawl 20 is guided during its return movement. The angle over which each internal sector 25 extends corresponds to the rank of its sign in the combination.
This angle is of just sufficient value to allow the pawl 20 to fall on the sector 25 of the next disc 7, near the stop 24 of the latter, at the end of its return movement, so as to be in position. for the operation of this disc, and so on for the complete series of discs 7.
As seen in fig. 3, each disc 7 has a notch 26 intended for the passage of the latch 6. Each disc 7 also has, on its internal edge, a bearing surface 27. These bearing surfaces 27 are intended to cooperate with a drive element 28 forming part a disturbing member 29, consisting of a ring guided in a circular groove 30 formed in the bottom of part 1 of the housing.
Notches 31 are made in the annoying ring 29 to allow it to be dragged in rotation by the pawl 20, when the latter is in the rest position, its free end resting on the annoying ring 29.
This lock further comprises a device intended to bring the pawl 20, against the elastic return force produced by the spring 22, into an initial position in which said pawl 20 is ready to drive the first annular disc 7 of the series. (position shown in fig. 1). This positive device comprises a ring 32 arranged coaxially with the annular discs 7 and guided inside the disturbing member 29. This ring 32 is further guided by a bearing surface 33 provided in the bottom of part 1 of the housing. This ring 32 has a notch 34 allowing it to be driven by the pawl 20.
Furthermore, this ring 32 carries a ramp-shaped element 35 intended to bring the pawl 20 into the initial position during a return movement of the pawl. In addition, a device for momentarily blocking the ramp 35 in a position of cooperation with the pawl 20 comprises a spring 36 fixed to the ring 32, the end of this spring 36 being intended to cooperate with a notch 37 formed in the bearing 33.. The engagement of the spring 36 in said notch 37 precisely causes the momentary locking of the ring 32 and of its ramp 35, relative to part 1 of the housing.
In addition, a stop 38 is located at the top of said ramp 35 to cooperate with the pawl 20 brought into the initial position and cause the release of this device 36, 37 at the end of the return stroke of the pawl 20. The bearing 33 has a recessed area 39 leaving full angular freedom to the spring 36 and thus to the ring 32 over approximately a quarter of a circumference.
In addition, each annular disc 7 has at its periphery notches 40 intended to cooperate with a spring 41 fixed in part 1 of the housing. These notches 40 and the corresponding spring 41 are intended to guarantee a stable position of each annular disc 7, when it has been moved by the pawl 20.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the upper part 2 of the housing has an opening 42 through which appears a mark 43 carried by the first annular disc 7. This mark 43 appears in the opening 42 when the annular discs 7 have been brought into the initial position by the spoiler 29.
This bringing into the initial position of the annular discs 7 is ensured by the entry into contact of the element 28 of the disturbing member 29 simultaneously with all the stops 27 of the annular discs 7 by a determined maneuver of the control disc 10.
The operation of the combination lock described above is as follows. In the example shown, the annular discs 7 are brought into the initial position by actuating the control disc 10 from 0 in the series of digits. Indeed, the element 28 is arranged so that after an operation of the disc 10 from 0, the mark 43 appears in the opening 42, which indicates that all the annular discs 7 are placed in the initial position. .
When the disc 10 has been driven by the user's finger from 0 and that said finger is still hand held pressed against the stop member 16, the ring 32 is driven by the pawl 20 bearing against the stop 34, so as to bring the spring 36 into the notch 37, which corresponds to the momentary locking position of the ring 32 and of the ramp 35 (position indicated in FIG. 5). When the user releases the disc 10, the spring 13 returns the latter to the rest position, which simultaneously drives the pawl 20 in return movement. The free end of said pawl 20 then slides along the ramp 35. , against the action of the spring 22.
When said pawl is close to the return end of travel, its free end strikes the stop 38, which causes the ring 32 to be released by releasing the spring 36 out of the notch 37. The end of the ring 32 is released. pawl 20 then rests on the internal sector 25 of the first disc 7, near its stop 24. The corresponding position of the various components of the lock has been indicated in FIG. 6. This position is therefore the initial position from which the combination can be composed. In the example shown and assuming that the number of the combination happens to be the number 3527, the user will first of all drive the disc 10 by engaging his finger in the opening 15 corresponding to the number 3.
Thus, the pawl 20 will move the first annular disc 7 by driving it by its stop 24, to bring it into the position shown in FIG. 7. When the user releases the disc 10 by withdrawing his finger from the opening 15, the end of the pawl 20 is guided by the internal sector 25 of the first disc 7, which is of just sufficient length so that end of this sector 25, the pawl falls on the sector 25 of the next disc 7, near the stop 24 of the latter.
By actuating the disc 10 from number 5, the user brings the second annular disc 7 into the position shown in FIG. 8. The release of the disc 10 causes the pawl 20 to fall on the internal sector of the third disc 7.
The user then actuates the control disc 10 from number 2, to bring the third disc 7 into the position shown in FIG. 9. Releasing the disc 10 again lets the pawl 20 fall on the sector 25 of the fourth disc 7. By then actuating the control disc 10 from number 7, the user brings this fourth annular disc 7 into position. re presented in fig. 10. The notches 26 of the four annular discs 7 are then aligned and in coincidence with the countersink 5 of the housing. The lock is therefore open and the lock 6 can be released or engaged in the housing 1, 2 through the opening 44 made in the upper part 2 of the housing.
When the user wishes to bring the lock to the closed position, it suffices for him to actuate the disc 10 from the 0 of the graduation to cause a disturbance of the annular discs 7 causing the recess 5 to be covered by a solid part of each of the disks 7. This disturbed or scrambled position of the lock is therefore caused by the disturbing member 29 by the pawl 20 engaging in one of the notches 31 of this member 29.
This disturbed position of the discs 7 has been shown schematically in FIG. 11 in expanded view.
A new maneuver for the opening of the lock is done by rotating the disc 10 again from the 0 of the graduation, so that the pawl 20, by engaging in the second of the notches 31 of the member disturber 29, brings the discs 7 to the initial position indicated by the appearance of the mark 43 in the opening 42.
It can be seen from the foregoing that the operation of this combination lock is easy and that any error in the choice of numbers inevitably causes jamming or disturbance of the annular discs 7.
It can be seen in particular that if the person wishing to open the lock, instead of operating the disc 10 from the number 3, started the operation of the latter from the number 4, during the return movement of the pawl 20, the latter ci, after having been guided on the internal sector 25 of the first disc 7, would fall directly against the ring of the disturbing member 29, given that the internal sector 25 of the first disc 7, provided for the number 3, is not not of sufficient length to allow the pawl 20 to fall on the sector 25 of the following disc 7.
The degree of inviolability of this lock is therefore very particularly high.
Many variants of execution of this lock could be imagined. Thus, the disks 7, instead of being of different diameters, could all be of the same diameter and be guided in a part of the housing 1 which is perfectly cylindrical internally. As for the blocking device 36, 37, it could be replaced by any momentary spring or ball blocking device, the res being secured either to the ring 32 or to part 1 of the housing. As for the single control member 10, instead of being constituted by a disc in the form of a telephone device selection disc, it could be constituted by any control member with buttons or knurled discs, for example. .
This lock, instead of being intended to cooperate with a lock 6, could also be used to hide an ordinary keyhole. In this case, the combination lock should be brought into the open position to allow the engagement of the key of the ordinary lock in the opening 44 and through the countersink 5 released by the notches 26 of the different discs 7.
