The present invention relates to an electric iron with steam production characterized in that it comprises a hollow metal body having at least two chambers occupying practically the entire extent of the iron. iron, these chambers being in communication with each other by a passage of such size that the steam obtained by pouring into the first chamber a small quantity of water at atmospheric temperature and pressure, undergoes an effect of retention followed by relaxation from the first chamber to the next chamber. The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of a meal iron according to the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the body of the iron.
Fig. 2 is a representation of the iron without its top cover.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the whole iron.
Fig. 4 is a view, through the rear end, of the body of the iron shown in FIG. 1, with the cover partially in section.
Fig. 5 is a rear view of the iron to be passed with its rear closing cap. Fig. 6 is a diagram of a dual temperature regulator circuit controlled by a thermostatic element.
According to the drawing, the main body of the iron is constituted by a metal block 10, the outline of which has the classic ogive shape. This block has, parallel to the base, two chambers 12 and 13 (fig. 4) which are arranged longitudinally, relatively wide, of little height and of rectangular section, these chambers being open at their rear parts and being formed during the block molding operation.
The rear part of the block has a plug 14 (fig. 3) which is applied with the interposition of a suitable seal closing the chambers hermetically and at the same time constituting the connection of the supply valve 15 which opens into the chamber. one of the chambers and this valve is provided with a connector 16 for its connection to a water pipe. At its front end, said chambers are in communication with one another by means of a bore constituting a duct of relatively very small diameter between them. This hole is made from the outside and its part located in the outer wall is blocked by a plug 17 (FIG. 3).
In the embodiment shown, the upper part of the body forms a bulge 18 placed longitudinally from the rear part to near the tip (fig. 1 and 2) and which is cut by the anterior and posterior planes 19 and 20. respectively.
In this part of the body and above the chambers, there are circular channels 21, 22 and 23 (fig. 4) constituted by perforations made in the material, provided in variable number, for example three in number in the embodiment shown, one on one side, as 23 being in communication with the second expansion chamber 13 while said channel, by its front end, communicates with the opposite channel 21 and the latter to in turn, with the central channel 22, always through orifices of very small diameter,
establishing a circuit for the circulation of steam and these channels acting as heating chambers. The communication between the expansion chamber 13 and the heating channel 23 can be established advantageously by means of a groove or a communication made in the closure plate 14 itself.
Above and to the side of the heating channels and in the mass of the block itself, there are in turn four longitudinal channels 25, 26, 27 and 28 which cross the bulge of the block in a longitudinal direction from side to side. part and in each of them is housed an electrical resistance element 25 ', 26', 27 'and 28', taken in a suitable refractory mass, so that they are completely immobilized, and that only the ends of said conductors, which are conveniently insulated by sheaths of insulating material 29 or any other suitable arrangement, connected together to establish the heating circuit, the terminal terminals 30, 31 being at the rear for connection to the socket current.
At the rear part of the block and in the space between the two chambers 12 and 13 there is a longitudinal bore which is divided into two chambers 32, 33 (fig. 1) by means of a threaded plug 34 at a certain distance. of the mouth, the internal chamber 33 being in communication by means of a channel 35 of small diameter, with the central heating channel 22 and the internal wall of this chamber having a series of perforations 36 which cross the surface iron and through which steam is projected onto the garment being ironed.
The water supply valve 15 is connected to the plate 14 opening out in front of the chamber 12 and, by means of a connector 16 and a flexible pipe, it is connected to a water tank, at the pressure atmospheric, located a short distance from the appliance or it can receive water from a small tank associated with the iron itself.
Said valve 15 can be actuated at will and for this purpose, the rod 37 of this valve can move upwards or downwards and it is linked to the end 38 of a lever 39 articulated on an axis 40 arranged in the support for the handle 41 of the iron, the lever 39 going up to the front part and ending in a rod provided with a button 42 which remains within reach of the thumb of the hand operating the iron, so that according to the wishes of the user, he can press on said button 10 which allows the entry of a small quantity of water into the interior of the vaporization chamber.
In the external cavity 32 is housed a thermostatic element consisting of a bimetallic strip 43, the expansion of which when the body reaches a predetermined temperature, produces a pressure on the contact strips 44 (fig. 5) housed in a recess 45 of the plug 14 .
The aforementioned regulating device comprises the provision of a relay or electromagnet mounted either on the iron itself or separately on the socket-outlet device, the contact being controlled by the thermostat interposed on the excitation circuit. of said relay, while its armature controls a switch located on the supply circuit of the heating resistor. Fig. 6 shows an example of the connections of this double circuit. The contact 44 is closed by the action of the thermostat when the temperature exceeds a certain limit, producing the excitation of the coil 46 relay 47 whose hammer, or moving armature, 48 is integral with a contact arm 49 forming part of switch 50 interposed on the supply circuit of resistor 51.
In an analogous manner, the circuit can be combined so that the thermostat acts by or vising the contact 44 and that the supply circuit of the resistance is normally open, and is closed under the action of the relay.
With the construction described, there is obtained an iron of great efficiency, great efficiency and easy and safe operation, and a continuous production of steam is obtained in the quantity desired, said steam having the optimum degree of dryness for that the clothes do not stay damp, or that they need to be ironed several times to dry them. Reliable temperature regulation is also obtained, within very close limits, by virtue of the arrangement of the double circuit which ensures rapidity of the contacts without any disturbance occurring in said contacts.
