Electrical device for the ignition of fluid fuel. The object of the present invention is an electrical device for igniting fluid fuel.
This device is characterized in that it comprises an electric heating element, intended to be placed in the immediate vicinity of the place where the ignition is to be produced and controlled by organs placed under the control of means of man # work for the supply of combustible fluid, the whole being arranged so that the electric heating element is momentarily traversed by a current, and thereby produces ignition of the fluid, when acting on the means of maneuver of the flow thereof in the direction corresponding to the opening.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the positive device.
Fig. 1 and 2 are detail views; Fig. 3, 4 and 5 respectively represent in perspective, in elevation and in plan a part of the device; Fig. 6 is a plan of the control members of the device; Fig. 7 and 8 are detail views; Fig. 9 is a vertical section corresponding to FIG. 6; Fig. 10 is a detail view; Fig. 11 and 12 are perspective views of two stoves, respectively gas and liquid fuel, to which the device is applied.
The device comprises an electric heating element (fig. 1 to 5) and means for controlling this element (fig. 6 to 9). The device is shown applied to a gas stove (fig. 11) and an alcohol stove (fig. 12).
The heating element (shown in perspective in figA) has the general shape of a V. It comprises a body of insulating material consisting of them parts 16 and 16a (porcelain for example) having very appreciably same shape and which are intended to be fitted against each other as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. The two parts constituting this body are shown respectively in FIGS. 1 and 2. The holes 4 made in these parts are used for the passage of screws 8 connecting them to each other (fig. 4 and 5).
In the opposite faces of the two parts 16 and 16a thus assembled by the screws 8 are formed housings 2, 3, 5 and 6 (fig. 1 and 2) which are intended to come respectively opposite to each other when the parts are assembled, so as to form cavities inside the element. The housings 2, 3 and 5 are of semi-cylindrical shape, so that the cavities which they determine are cylindrical.
In each of the recesses formed by the parts 3 is disposed a cylindrical part 9 of conductive material (Fig. 8) which has an orifice 13. In the orifice 13 of each of these parts 9 is engaged the end of a electrical conductor 15, which is held in place by a tightening screw 12. Housings 7 are provided for the heads of the screws 12. The conductors 15 pass into the cavities 5 and 6 and through a protective tube 14. One screws 8 pass through the latter (fig.4) and thus fix element 16 to this tube.
The parts each have an orifice 17 which, when said part 9 is in place, is in the extension of the corresponding cylindrical recess 2.
In the orifices 17 is threaded, through the recesses 2, a wire 10 of an electrically conductive material such as chort mesh or nichrome for example, or any other metal or alloy used for the con fection of the electrical resistances. This wire is arranged, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, so as to pass through the branches or parts of the heating element and the space separating these parts. It is held in place by clamping screws 11 arranged in threaded holes 1 and can be easily replaced, for example in the event of breakage, by unscrewing the screws 11, without the need to remove the locking element. heater. In this way, thanks to the screws 11 and to the members 9, the wire 10 is connected to the conductors 15.
When a closed coupling, it can pass through the diane of the wire 10, located between the two cylindrical parts 9, heats by the Joule effect and is brought to red, which allows the ignition of gas or steam or even fuel coming out of a burner near which it is placed.
The wire 10 is dimensioned so that it is brought to the incandescence in a very short time (¸ to 1 second for example) under the influence of a potential difference of about 3 volts between its ends.
To control the automatic ignition of the liquid, vapor or combustible gas coming out of an orifice or a burner near which the element according to fig. 3 is placed, during the opening maneuver of 'a member controlling the flow rate of the combustible fluid, a valve, for example, the following means are provided: Inside a box 20 made up of two parts connected to one another by means of a control device. bayonet closure for example, passes the axis 21 of a valve controlling the flow of combustible fluid through the conduit 69. This valve can be actuated. a handle 48 fixed to the axis 21 by means of an ankle 49.
A contact member intended to produce the closing of an electrical circuit through the wire 10 is (arranged so as to be driven by the axis 21 when the handle 48 is acted on in the direction corresponding to the 'opening of the tap, so that it then produces: the momentary closing of said circuit, during the time necessary for ignition, after which the circuit is opened automatically. In this way the wire 10 is brought momentarily to, l 'inea-n- descence and produces the ignition of the fluid.
This is obtained by the following arrangement: The pipe 69, on which the lower part of the box 20 is arranged has a flat 70 and orifices 18 and 71 intended respectively for the passage of the axis 21 and for the fixing - of the box on the flat 70 by means of screws 19 (fig. 9). At the bottom of the box 20 is fixed, by means of screws 32, a plate 31 of insulating material, eg hard rubber.
On the plate 31 is fixed, by means of screws 30, a contact segment 28, made of brass for example to which is connected, at 29, the end of an insulated conductor, passing as well as another also insulated conductor, through an orifice 22 of the box 20.
The screws 30 are isolated from the mass of the box by an insulating sheet 33 of mica, for example.
This contact segment is intended to co-operate with a movable contact 34 connected at 35-36 at the end of a second conductor, to close an electrical circuit through the wire 10 of the heating element, by connecting the ends of these two conductors.
The movable contact 34 consists of a plate of conductive material (brass for example) fixed to the free end of an arm 24 oscillating around the axis 21. The fixing of 34 to 24 is obtained by means of screws 37 (fig. 7) and isolation means such as a mica sheet placed between 34 and 24 and ebonite barrels surrounding these screws 37, so that the plate and the arm 24 are isolated from each other. The plate 34 has a projecting part 35 to which is fixed, by means of a screw 36, the end of the corresponding conductor (fig. 6 and 7) and, at its end part, a part 38 constituting a stopper serving to his training as will be seen later.
At 40 are means (an orifice or a lug for example) for fixing to the arm 24 one end of a flexible member such as a cable, which passes over a return pulley 81 (FIG. 9) and which is urged, by means which will be described below, to rotate the arm 24 in the anti-clockwise direction. This cable and these means could moreover be replaced by a coil spring, without harming the proper functioning of the device. A stop 23 fixed to the bottom & the box 20 limits the movement of the arm 24. The arm 24 is freely mounted on the axis 2.1, so that the latter does not cause it, during its rotation.
It is held between two washers 41 arranged on the axis 21. The upper washer is a spring washer intended to apply the die contact blade 34 against the contact segment. This is obtained by means of a cylindrical part or barrel (not visible in the drawing) arranged around the axis 21 and bearing on a shoulder 46 of this axis, on which the shoulder also rests the lower washer 41.
The height of this barrel is such that the spring-loaded washer acts on the arm 2.4 as indicated, when a nut 42 screwed onto a threaded part 47 of the axis 21 is blocked on the upper face of this barrel. This .dernière being sou put, like the upper face of the spring washer, to the action of the nut 42. From the. In this way, a good contact between 34 and 28 is obtained, without however the rotation of 24 being hampered.
Another nut, 45, also screwed onto part 47, cooperates with 42 to hold a second arm, 43, immobile lengthwise on the axis 21, by tightening it between its lower face and the upper face of the other nut 42 .
To facilitate the assembly of the arm 43 and to make the latter angularly stationary with respect to the axis 21, this arm has a part projecting inside the opening that this arm has for the wise pitch of the axis. 21. This projecting part is intended to engage in a groove made in the periphery of the axis 21, according to a generatrix.
The -arm 43 is used to drive the arm 24 and will be called the drive arm. It is relatively thin and flexible and has, at its free end, a field part arranged so as to be able to engage with the part 38 carried by the arm 24. to drive the latter.
At its free end, the arm 43 also has a part capable of cooperating with a stop 25 having a cam-shaped part having a profile such that, when the flanged part of the arm 43 comes into contact with it, this arm is either forced to curve upwards by an amount such that the field part of the arm 43 leaves the part 38 and 24 which then obeys the stress of the cable acting on it at 40.
The stopper or cam 25 is capable of being moved in a horizontal plane, along a groove made in the side wall of the box 20 and constituting a slide. It is guided by two pins 27 and can be made fixed by means of a screw 26, the head of which is located outside the box 20.
The operation of the device is as follows: Let us suppose that the handle 48, which controls a valve not shown (fig. 10) located in the duct 69 is in the closing position.
If it is desired to ignite the burner corresponding to this valve (fig. 11), turn the handle 48 clockwise, so as to produce the opening of the corresponding valve and 'arrival of combustible fluid at the burner, immediately adjacent to which is the part of the heating element where the wire 10 is located.
The rotation of the handle 48 produces the dragging of the axis 21 and of the arm 43. The field part of the latter abuts against the part 38 of the other arm and drives it until it passes. opposite the cam 25. For the major part of this displacement, the contact cam 34 is in contact with the segment 28, which causes a current to flow to. through the wire 10 which heats up so as to produce the ignition of the fluid as it exits the burner.
When the arm 43 passes over the curved part 44 of the cam 25, its end is moved upwards, as seen above, so that its field part aban gives the part 38 of the arm 24. The latter then obeying stressing the cable fixed at 40 regains its initial position.
The field part of the arm 43 has a shape such that, when it returns to the closed position, it can pass pa @ above the end part 38 of the arm 24.
In order to allow the wire 10 time to come incandescent, this return movement of the arm 24 - during the major part of which the plate 34 always remains in contact with the segment 28 - is braked, so that the wire 10 is crossed. by a current for one to several seconds.
To produce this slowdown, a sealed cylinder 50 is provided, made of brass for example, having at its ends a cylindrical bearing surface 51 and two covers 52 and 52a screwed onto the ends of said cylinder. Plastic washers, for example rubber, are arranged between the covers and the corresponding bearing surfaces, in order to ensure the tightness of the cylinder; near one of its ends, the cylinder 50 has at 53 a tu bular projection 54, on which is fixed a tube 66, made of rubber for example, curved and placed by its other end, on another projection, 55 , also of tubular shape, which the cover 52a has.
The protrusions 54 and 55 -are thus at both ends of the cylinder and allow the circulation inside the tube 66 -of a fluid such as glycerin, which fills the cylinder 50.
The cover 52 has, in its center, an orifice allowing the rod 60 of a piston 61 to pass through. inside the cylinder and formed by two metal washers, for example brass, .serrant between them a plastic washer 62, for example rubber, thanks to. a nut 63. The -diameter. outside of the washer 62 is substantially equal to the inside diameter of the cylinder 50.
The free end of the. rod 60 -of the piston, 61 has a perforated head 64, constituted for example by a cap nut screwed on this rod, serving, for, the fixing of the cable fixed on the other hand at 40. The cable is fixed at 64 for example at means of a node formed at its .extreme passing through the head ô4.
Inside the cylinder 50 is disposed a -compression spring 65 bearing on the cover 52 to urge the piston 61 to come to rest on the cover 52a.
A cable gland is fixed to the cover 52, by means of three screws 58, at the place where the rod 51 passes. It comprises a plastic washer 59, made of rubber for example, which is compressed by a metal washer, on which these screws act.
A slit where the orifice of the tubular projection 55 opens into the cylinder, is attached to the cover 52a, a valve 56, made of rubber for example. This valve is fixed by means of screws and has, crimped in its center, a metal plate 57 carried by a small hole for the passage of glycerin.
The operation of the slowing device is as follows: The handle 48 being actuated in the direction of clockwise, so as to produce the opening of the valve and the ignition of the burner, the arm 24 is driven in the same direction, which produces, thanks to the cable fixed at 40 and 64, the displacement of the piston 61 inside the cylinder 50, towards the cover 52. This movement of the piston causes the fluid located in the part of this cylinder between this piston and the cover 52 is driven through the channel 53 of the tubular projection 54 through the tube 66 and the valve 56, which then opens. When the arm 24 is left to itself, the spring 65 forces the piston 61 to return to the initial position, which drives the fluid through the tube 66, in the opposite direction from above.
The valve then closes and the fluid can only pass through the orifice of the plate 54 crimped in this valve. Given the dimensions of this orifice, the fluid, which is chosen to be quite viscous, can only pass slowly through it, so that the piston can only return slowly to the initial position, slowly enough for the wire 10 to become incandescent hundred and produce ignition on burnt.
The cylinder 50 is fixed to the bottom of the box 20 by a collar 67 and two screws 68. FIG. 11 shows a gas stove placed on a table 73 and comprising, fixed against the underside of the stove, by means of rings 72, the protective tubes 14 and the connectors 14a for the conductors 15, which are connected with a spart to a current source consisting of an accumulator or a battery 75 resting on a shelf 74 fixed below the table 78 and, on the other hand, to the heating elements, which are located opposite the burners.
The battery or accumulator 75 could be replaced by the secondary of a small transformer supplied by an alternating current network.
If we admit a voltage of 3 volts at the secondary, a maximum intensity of 30 amperes, about twenty ignitions per day by means of the device, each ignition ne ceasing the passage of current for about a second, we obtain a consumption. Annual electrical energy consumption in the order of 0.1 to 0.2 kilowatt-hours, which is practically insignificant.
Fig. 12 shows, in perspective, a liquid fuel stove, for example alcohol fuel, which can be used for surgeons and dentists, for disinfecting instruments, for heating curling irons at hairdressers, etc. Its ignition device comprises a heating element 76, electrical conductors 15 connected to a current source not shown, a stopcock 77 controlling, on the one hand, the flow of combustible liquid coming from the reservoir 79 and, on the other hand, the passage of the current in the wire 10 of the element 76. This switch valve is for example analogous to that .described above.
It comprises a small chamber 78 receiving a small quantity of fuel @du reservoir 79. And, discharging onto wire 10 during the ignition, thanks to a bend 80 emerging above .this wire 10.
This device can be used to produce the ignition of all liquid or gaseous fuel appliances; gasoline or petroleum gas for example.
'It could also be used with -stoves, charcoal, wood or any other fuel @ less easily flammable than alcohol, provided that means are provided to bring, near the element of heating, at the time of ignition, a small quantity of easily flammable fluid, such as alcohol.
The cylinder 50, to slow the return movement of the contact arm 24, might not exist. In this case, a return spring would return the arm 24 to the initial position after having been maintained, by means of the lever 48, for the time necessary for ignition in its position corresponding to the passage of current in the wire 10. The device could possibly include several heating wires 10.
The cylinder 50 could include means making it possible to adjust the return speed of the piston 61 and the time during which the current passes through the wire 10.
In order to facilitate assembly, the protective tubes 14, in the case of FIG. 11 for example, could be deleted. The conductors 15 would then pass between ribs projecting downwards, against the underside of the stove; the space limited laterally by these ribs, and in which space are then the conductors, is closed, downwards, by means of a plate screwed to the stove, against the end part of the said ribs.
The above description, relating to the case where the conductors are arranged in the casing 14, is more particularly that where the ignition device would have been adapted to an existing stove, while the variant indicated last corresponds to the case where a stove is constructed which is intended to receive, during manufacture, an ignition device as described.
As has been said above, the device for braking the return movement of the arm 24 might not exist, in fact, experience has shown that the time taken for the arm 24 to effect its forward movement and return when the valve is opened, when it is subjected directly to the action of a return spring, is sufficient to allow the heating wire to become incandescent. However, for example in the case where the opening of the fluid valve takes place automatically, in particular under the control of a clock, or it will be advantageous to use a delay device, in order to increase operating safety.
The device could also have only one contact arm, which would be solid of the axis 21. In this case, the contact segment cooperating with this arm would be placed so that the latter rubs against it for a period of time. sufficient time to produce ignition before it leaves it and the valve is fully open. In order to allow the fluid flow to be adjusted without again bringing the arm and the segment into contact, the valve will be adjusted by actuating the axis 21 so that the contact arm moves opposite a part of the bottom of the box where the contact segment is not located.
For example: the contact segment could correspond roughly to the first quarter turn of the valve from the closed position, the setting of. debit would then occur in the second quarter.
It should be noted that in this variant, there is no need for a return device for the contact arm, nor for a cam such as 25, since there is only one contact arm.
