Cette extré.- M *té J de, la lame. 15 est introduite entre les bords aplatis du tube 16 et est fixée par bra- sa#-;
Le réglage n'est pas compromis par de petites variations des organes, telles que l'usure des contacts par amorçage d'arc, ou la contraction ou un léger déplacement du bouchon isolant 5. Un autre avantage réside dans le fait que, la lame bimétallique 15 étant en contact mé tallique avec la partie médiane de l'enveloppe 3, l'enroulement de cet élément peut être uni forme, ce qui lui assure une durée utile plus longue, et qu'il n'est pas nécessaire que l'en roulement soit plus serré en un ou plusieurs points particuliers, par exemple, à ses extré- m;
Au lieu d'aplatir l'extrémité du tube dans lequel est logée la lame bimétallique, on peut fixer celle-ci par d'autres procédés, par exemple comme indiqué aux fig. 8 et 9. Comme indiqué à ces figures, la lame bimé tallique 15 est logée dans un tube cylindrique 20 fermé, ,à son extrémité fixée à l'enveloppe de l'élément chauffant, par un bouchon 21 comportant une rainure 22 dans laquelle' est ajustée l'extrémité de la lame bimétallique que l'on y fixe par brasage;

<tb> il <SEP> est <SEP> d;

Fig. 20 is a cross section showing the initial shape of the casing after insertion of the resistance element and the insulating tape therein. Fig. 21 shows the cross-section of another form of construction, in which the edges of the casing are deformed differently or form shoulders.
Figs. 22 and 23 show two other modified forms of the envelope.
As shown in fig. 1 to 6 of the attached drawings, the electric immersion heating device mounted on a kettle 1 comprises a heating element consisting of a resistance element 2 with a flattened or ribbon winding housed in a casing 3 in the form of a loop arranged at inside the kettle, just above the bottom of it. This envelope 3, made of metal, has an elongated section, as indicated in FIG. 3,
and its ends pass through the end of a metal fixing head 4 which passes through an opening in the wall of the kettle. The head 4 is closed by a plug 5 made of insulating material which comprises the two usual pins 6 and 7. One end of the heating resistor 2 is connected directly to the pin 6, and its other end is connected to pin 7 through a switch.
The latter comprises two metal contacts 8 and 9, the contact 8 being carried by an elastic arm 10 fixed to a metal plate 11 connected to the pin 7 by a screw 12, the other contact 9 being carried by a folded part of a metal plate 13 fixed to the insulating plug 5 by a tubular rivet on which is fixed, for example: by welding, one of the ends of the resistor 2.
The insulating plug 5 has the necessary housings for the contacts 8 and 9 and their supports, and the arrangement is such that the contacts 8 and 9 are held normally against each other, as indicated in FIG. 3, so that the current can then pass through pin 6, the heating resistor, plate 13, contacts 8 and 9 and pin 7. The contents of the kettle can thus be heated.
A device is provided for opening the circuit when the temperature exceeds a fixed limit, which occurs, for example, when the kettle is empty or the water level falls below the immersion heater. For this purpose, the switch is associated with a heat-sensitive device consisting of a bimetallic member 15 in the form of a blade which separates the two contacts 8 and 9 of the switch at the appropriate time.
This bimetallic strip 15 extends internally over the entire. length of a metal tube of cylindrical section 16, one end of which is fixed, by brazing for example, in a hole in the head 4 so that the tube projects horizontally inside the kettle. Head 4 is attached to the. wall of the kettle 1 by an outer sleeve 18 screwed onto the head 4, a washer 19 assuming the seal to. the water. The blade 15 is rectilinear over its entire length and its flat end, not folded back, the furthest from the contacts 8 and 9 of the switch is fixed to the corresponding end of the tube 16.
To this end, this end of the tube is flattened at 16a by bringing the two halves of the end together, so as to form a thin horizontal slit just wide enough to receive the flat, non-folded end of the bimetallic strip 15.
This end - M * té J de, the blade. 15 is introduced between the flattened edges of the tube 16 and is fixed by bra- sa # -;
e, so as to form a solid bond and. to, prevent, at the same time, that the contents of the. kettle enters the tube 16, the end of which is farthest from the head 4 is completely closed. This flattened end of the tube 16 is arranged so as to rest on the upper edge of the middle part of the kettle. the envelope 3 of the heating element, this middle part being curved inside the loop, so as to form an auxiliary loop close enough to the head 4 to avoid the use of a tube of length excessive.
The flattened end of the tube 16 is rigidly attached to the upper edge of the heater casing 3 by brazing or welding, the flattened portion forming an extended contact surface.
The bimetallic strip 15 occupies the axis of the tube 16 and does not touch the wall, so as not to undergo any tension when, being cold, it occupies its initial position. The end of the blade 15 opposite the end fixed between the edges 16a of the tube carries a ball 17 of material. insulator located just above the elastic arm 10 which carries the contact 8.
The arrangement is such that if the temperature of the heater exceeds a certain limit, which occurs, for example, if the level of the water in the kettle falls below the level of loop 3, the bimetallic strip 15 is deformed in such a way that it moves the arm 1 (r downwards, thus separating the contacts 8 and 9. The current is therefore automatically interrupted.
Since the fixed end of the bimetallic strip 15 is in metalli c contact with the casing 3 of the heating element via the flattened end of the tube 16, and since it is stirred on this last , which ensures thermal contact by fact, the heat transfer takes place as quickly as possible, so that the device is very sensitive to changes in temperature and works immediately to open the circuit as soon as the contents of the kettle reach the dangerous level.
In addition, the heat conductivity is a known factor and does not vary, as could happen if the bimetallic strip were fixed, for example, by a screw, since the surfaces in contact could then not be flat and clean. The device is of extremely simple construction, and foreign matter, such as rust or dust for example, cannot enter between the bimetallic blade and the parts to which it is attached and thus prevent the normal return of the blade. to the position allowing the circuit to be closed.
A blade of sufficient length can be used to give its insulated end a long enough stroke and the arm 10 carrying one of the switch contacts is not subjected to any pressure until the temperature exceeds that of the switch. boiling water. The arm 10 therefore does not undergo any harmful force when the apparatus is operating normally.
This device avoids the use of a very precise, easily adjustable switch and a resetting device, it also avoids the use of screws or other moving parts intended, for example, to adjust. contacts to compensate for their wear caused by arcing or by other causes.
The device is fully automatic, the contacts 8 and 9 coming back against each other as soon as the temperature has fallen below the upper admissible limit. As soon as the temperature exceeds the boiling point, the switch quickly opens the circuit, the current being interrupted for a temperature much lower than that which would cause deterioration of the heating element.
The use of a long bimetallic strip in direct metal contact with the heating element allows rapid opening of the circuit, even if the heating device is covered with a thick layer of scale or lime deposited by the water, whereas, in other devices of the same kind, this deposit allows the temperature to reach a high value before the safety device operates, so that the heating element can burn.
The adjustment is not compromised by small variations of the components, such as wear of the contacts by arcing, or the contraction or a slight displacement of the insulating plug 5. Another advantage is that the blade bimetallic 15 being in metallic contact with the middle part of the casing 3, the winding of this element can be uniform, which ensures a longer useful life, and that it is not necessary that the in rolling is tighter at one or more particular points, for example, at its ends;
Us near the head 4 to release the quantity of heat necessary for the operation of the safety device. It is not desirable to tighten the winding at the ends of the heating element, as these ends are generally considered to be the weakest parts, and the head 4 should be heated as little as possible, because not only there is heat loss, but also the temperature rise which occurs when the circuit is closed, with the kettle empty, causes rapid deterioration of certain parts of the device and, in particular,
of the rubber washer 19.
By fixing the end of the bimetallic blade 15 between the flattened edges 16a of the tube 16 in the manner described, it is not necessary to bend the end of this blade, this bending being able to cause a considerable harmful force if the radius of curvature is very small.
In a variant shown in fi-. 7, the flattened end 16a of the tube 16, in which the bimetallic blade 15 is housed, is pressed on its edges, as indicated at 16b, so as to more completely close the end of the tube and to prevent any displacement. lateral end of the blade 15. The latter, moreover, is preferably fixed by brazing, so as to ensure perfect heat contact.
Instead of flattening the end of the tube in which the bimetallic strip is housed, it can be fixed by other methods, for example as indicated in fig. 8 and 9. As indicated in these figures, the bimetallic strip 15 is housed in a closed cylindrical tube 20, at its end fixed to the casing of the heating element, by a plug 21 having a groove 22 in which ' the end of the bimetallic blade is adjusted, which is fixed there by brazing;
one can also adopt the arrangement shown in FIGS. 10 and 11 and according to which the tube 10 is closed by a stopper in two semi-cylindrical parts 21a and 21b between which the end of the bimetallic strip 15 is fixed by brazing. The tube containing the bimetallic blade may have a suitable section whatever shell and the bimetallic blade can be fixed, if desired, by a screw, although it is preferable to fix it by brazing or welding.
As shown in fig. 12 and 13, the bimetallic strip 15 is housed in a tube 23 with a square section closed at its end.

placed <SEP> near <SEP> of the <SEP> upper edge <SEP> <SEP> of <SEP> the heating element casing, so that the device can operate before the water has completely uncovered said envelope. The latter can also: be horizontal or inclined; preferably, it is slightly inclined downwards, from the head 4, as indicated in FIG. 1.
When the heater is to be supplied with direct current, a capacitor is connected in parallel on the contacts.
By the expression “bi-metallic member or blade” is meant any device sensitive to heat comprising at least two metal blades applied against each other, at least two of these blades having different expansion coefficients.
In the construction illustrated in figs. 17 to 23, the metal casing 3 in the form of a loop is constructed so that the resistance wire or tape 2 cannot come into contact with the inner face of the casing. The resistance wire or tape 2 is wound, in the usual manner, on a body formed by a pendant mica tape or mica-based material 29. that on the two opposite sides of the resistance element 2, two tapes. or layers 30 and 31 of insulating material are arranged which, also, may be of mica. or the like.
The whole, or the resistance element 2 wound on the body. 29 stored between the two outer insulating tapes 30 and 31, is fitted into the casing 3 of elongated cross section, attached to the head 4 as for the constructions described. Said casing 3 initially has the section shown in FIG. 20 and is internally large enough to allow easy introduction of the insulating tapes 29, 30 and 31 with the resistance wire 2, before the formation of the loop.
Usually, for such immersion heaters, the metal casing was simply flattened to press the insulating tapes externally against the resistance member and, if this pressure was insufficient to hold these parts tightly together, the resistance element could move and come into contact with the metal casing. In the present case, the resistance element or the winding 2 is prevented from coming into contact with the casing 3 and for this purpose the edges of the latter are flattened on one side in order to fold back the adjacent edge of the casing. an insulating tape from the outside to the inside.
In this way, the upper edge of the casing 3 is flattened at 3a to press the upper edge 30a of the outer insulating tape inwards, so that it rests on the resistant wire 2, as shown in fig. . 19, until it comes in contact with the opposite side of the outer insulating tape 31.
Likewise, the lower edge of the envelope 3 is flattened on the opposite side, i.e. at 3b, so that the lower edge 31a of the insulating tape 31 is forced to rest against the resistance wire, 2 and touching the opposite side of the insulating tape 30.
It emerges that the resistance element 2 is prevented from coming into contact with the inner surface of the upper edge of the casing 3 by the folded edge 30a of the insulating tape 30 and it cannot, on the other hand, come into contact. with the inner face of the lower edge of the envelope 3, because it makes contact with the folded edge 31a of the insulating tape 31.
There is therefore no disadvantage that there is clearance between the outer insulating tapes 30 and 31 and the resistance element 2 or between said insulating tapes and the metal casing 3. The resistance element cannot therefore not come into direct contact with the metallic casing 3, so that a short circuit is im possible.
The flattened parts 3a and 3b of the metal casing 3 are preferably formed at the same time that the two main parts of the casing are forced against each other to compress the resistor element 2 between them. : outer insulating tapes 30 and 31. This can be obtained in a single operation in a press, and the finished envelope has the rhomboidal section shown in: fig. 19.
The outer casing 3 can be pressed into shapes having different sections, so that the. edges are folded over the resistance wire or tape, in the variant shown in fig. 21 of the drawing, the metal casing 3 is formed so that its upper edge and its lower edge form shoulders 3c and 3d, the upper edge 30a of the insulating tape 30 is thus folded up against the insulating tape 31 while the lower edge 31a is folded against the face of the insulating tape 30,
so that the resistance element or the winding 2 is completely enclosed by the insulating material and cannot come into contact with the metal casing 3..
According to the embodiment of FIG. 22, the metal casing 3 forms symmetrical shoulders 3c along the upper edge and 3d along the lower edge. It emerges from the figure that the upper opposite edges 30a and 31b as well as the lower opposite edges 30b and 31a, of the two outer insulating tapes 30 and 31 are pressed against each other while surrounding the element. resistance or winding 2 and prevent the latter from coming into contact with the metal casing.
Fig. 23 of the drawing shows another construction which may be employed. For this construction, the upper edge and the lower edge of the metal casing 3 are worked on both sides, after inserting the insulating tapes and the resistance 2 in the casing, so as to force the opposite edges 30a and 31b and 30b and 31a of the two outer insulating tapes 30 and 31 to approach one another as shown. The upper and lower edges of the metal casing 3 are convex giving these edges a section which decreases.
The resistance element or the winding 2 is in this way completely enclosed by the insulating material.
For the embodiments shown in FIGS. 17 to 23, the edges. of the flattened metal casing are folded back. inward before the envelope is curved in its. loop shape, and the warped edges extend along the entire length of the casing.
If desired, the edges of the metal casing
