Process for preparing tertiary vinyl = ethinyl carbinols The invention relates to a process for preparing unsaturated tertiary carbinols which are useful, in particular as intermediate products for organic syntheses, as organic solvents and as anesthetics and anticonvulsants.
According to the invention, said unsaturated tertiary carbinols are prepared by condensation under anhydrous conditions of an aliphatic (3-haloalkylated ketone with a metal acetylide.
Among the compounds capable of being prepared by the present process, there may be mentioned those having the general formula

Lithium acetylide is preferred, however, because it provides excellent yields without the fear of polymerization of unsaturated ketones. The acetylides are advantageously prepared by dissolving the free metal or a metal amide in liquid ammonia and by treating the solution obtained with an acetylene stream optionally substituted to form the corresponding acetylide.
The metal acetylide acts as a condensing agent and forms the desired acetylenic group of the final product. It further acts as a dehydrohalogenation agent for P-haloalkyl ketone providing the desired alkenyl unsaturation in the product. To achieve these effects at least two equivalents of the metal acetylide per mole of ketone are used, with a slight excess over the amount stated above being preferred.
When the alkyl- (3-haloalkyl ketones, indicated above, are used as starting materials, two equivalents of the acetylide are required, of which a double bond is formed between the a and P carbon atoms of the ketone to remove the elements hydrogen and halogen, while the other condenses with the unsaturated ketone obtained.
For the same reasons, two equivalents of the metal acetylide are used with alkyl-P, (3-dihaloalkyl-ketone and the (3-haloalkyl, (3'-haloalkenyl-ketones, only one of the halogens being eliminated by the metal acetylide in each case.
When using p, # 'dihaloalkyl - ketones and p, (3, (3'-trihaloalkyl ketones, three equivalents of the acetylide act in an analogous manner, two equivalents forming two bonds between the carbon atoms a, (3 and a ', (3' of ketones, while the third condenses with the unsaturated ketons obtained.
Liquid ammonia is particularly useful as a solvent for the reaction, but it can be diluted with an inert solvent, for example diethyl ether, without serious harm to the condensation reaction.
In general, the reaction takes place at about the boiling point of liquid ammonia, but, when a low boiling solvent is used, temperatures corresponding to about the boiling point of the solvent, for example. example of diethyl ether,
can be used. The reactions are completed within hours and the products are isolated by removal of the solvent and the alkali or alkaline earth metal condensing agent. This is easily achieved by allowing the ammonia to evaporate and by pouring the resulting suspension into a mixture of ice and a suitable acid, for example acetic acid. The products are then rapidly extracted with ether, after which the obtained carbinols can be purified by distillation at reduced pressure.
The following examples illustrate the invention. Example 1 Preparation of 3-ethyl-5-methylpentene-1-yne-4-ol-3 (ethyl-vinyl-propynyl-carbinol). A solution of 7.7 g (1.1 mol) of lithium in 800 ml of liquid ammonia is treated with a stream of propyne gas until the blue color of the solution has disappeared. The gas flow is interrupted shortly after.
A solution of 60.3 g (0.5 mol) of ethyl- (3-chloroethyl-ketone in diethyl ether is then slowly added to the reaction mixture and the latter is subjected to reflux, at Using a condenser, with dry ice, for about three hours, the mixture is then diluted with diethyl ether and the ammonia is allowed to evaporate. The residual solution is treated. with a mixture of ice and acetic acid, after which the product is extracted with ether and purified by two distillation to give a yield of 7.2 g (11.6%). boils at 68 - 690 under a pressure of 14 mm.

Example II Preparation of 3-isopropylpentene-1-yne-4-ol-3 (isopropyl-vinyl-ethinyl-carbinol). Acetylene is passed through a stirred solution of lithium (7.7 g or 1.1 mole) in liquid ammonia (800 cm3) until the blue color has disappeared and until that the solution no longer contains any solids. To the solution obtained, lithium acetylide is added, with stirring, 67.3 g (0.5 mol) of isopropyl - @ - chloroethyl ketone dissolved in 70 cm3 of ether.
Immediate precipitation of a white solid (lithium chloride) is observed. After refluxing for two hours, 300 cm3 of ether are added and the ammonia is allowed to evaporate overnight. The residual mixture is poured into glacial acetic acid (35 g). The aqueous layer is separated and is extracted several times with 100 cm portions of ether. The aqueous layer is then subjected to analysis to determine its chloride ion content and is found to contain 0.493 moles (theoretically 0.50 moles). The mixed ether extracts are washed with sodium bicarbonate solution and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate.
Removal of the ether and two distillations of the residue afford 36.8 g (yield 59.3%) of pure isopropyl-vinyl-ethinyl-carbinol with a boiling point of 65 - 661, (29 mm); nD = 1.4520; D20 = 0.8923.
