Process for the preparation of cyclopentadecanone. The licensee made the unexpected finding that in 1,2-eyelanolones having 1.0 18-membered ring (formula II), the hy droxyl group can be reduced to -CHz before the ketone group does either. itself reduced to a -CH 3 group, and this with a good yield, which allows a direct reduction of 1,2-eyelanolones to ey-clanones (formula III).
This partial reduction can be carried out using zinc and hydrochloric acid, in the presence or absence of an organic solvent. It offers the advantage of being able to be applied to. not only pure 1,2-cy clanolones, but also impure 1,2-cyclanolones, such as those obtained by the process of the U patent. S. A. N 2228268, which contain. further isomeric products or cyelopoly methylene-1,2-diketones (formula I). These dieetones are.
first reduced to cyclanolones, so that the cyclanolones which contain them give yields of polymethylene ketones almost as good as the yields obtained with pure cyclanolones.

In the three formulas above, x is an integer ranging (the 8 to 16.
Since the reduction of evelanolones to evelanones is a partial reduction, it is naturally necessary (to maintain the conditions of reduction within limits such as the difference in reducibility of the two functional groups (which reaches its maximum in the decanic cycle). ) is used as much as possible.
It is best to set the reduction so that it produces just a little eyclane on the side of the eyelane. This adjustment can be obtained either by adjusting the temperature, or by adjusting the concentration of hydrochloric acid used in conjunction with zinc, or else by choosing the solvents in which the. reduction is carried out, dilution of reagents, etc.
I: Since the cyelanolones (formula II), or their mixture with the eyclandiones (formula I), have become easily accessible, their reduction represents an important industrial advance for the manufacture of cyclopolymethylenic ketones. Depending on the reduction method used and the. cycle size, yields vary between 50 and. 90% of theoretical returns.
The present patent relates to a process for the preparation of ey clopentadecanone, based on the findings indicated above. This process is characterized in that one sou puts. cyelopentadecanol-1-one-2 to partial reduction by means of zinc and hydrochloric acid.
This reduction can be carried out in the absence or in the presence of a. organic solvent, for example in a liquid medium containing such a solvent. The resulting cyclopentadecanone, which is im. known compound, can advantageously be used as a raw material in the perfume industry.
Here are two examples of execution of the process which is the subject of this patent: Example 1: 8 g of cyclopentadecanol-1-one-2, distilled once, are dissolved in a mixture of 160 ems of dioxane . 40 g of zinc tower are added to the solution and it is heated to boiling point by introducing a stream of gaseous hydrochloric acid therein at a rate of 15 g per hour.
As the zinc is dissolved, the speed of the gas stream is reduced to 3 g per hour. The reduction lasts approximately 21/2 at 3 hours. Dioxane and zinc are removed, then the reaction product dissolved in ether is washed with sodium carbonate and water. About 16 g of zinc are recovered. The product is distilled under 0.04 mm of pressure and a fraction of 6.55 g is obtained which distils between 111 and 153 C. This fraction is treated cold with light petroleum ether and 0.26 is thus removed. g of insoluble products.
For identification, the soluble product is transformed into a semiearbazone; 6.5 g are obtained, melting at 182-183 C. If the semicarbazone thus obtained is mixed with the semicarbazone of exaltone, melting at 187 ° C., the melting point of the latter is not lowered. Yield: 70% of the theoretical yield. 0.7 g of product does not give a semicarbazone.
Example 2: 10 g of cyelopentadecanol-1-ane-2, distilled ime times, are dissolved in 30 cm @ of ethanol. To this mixture are added 10 cm 3 of concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid (400/0) and 2 g of zinc tide in the cold. We heat everything to a boil. As soon as the zinc is almost consumed, another 2 g of fresh zinc and 5 cm @ of hydrochloric acid are added, so that the concentration of the acid never exceeds 80/0.
After adding in this manner 22 g of zinc (of which 17.1 g is consumed) and 55 em2 of hydrochloric acid, the reaction product is extracted with ether. 9.68 g of neutral parts are obtained, of which 7.71 g distill under 0.07 mm at 117-170 C (6.43 g at 117-127 C). For identification, we transform this fraction into. semi-carbazone, which gives 7.73 g, melting point 182-185n C.
The yield of cyclopenta.decanolone (exaltone) is 66% of the theoretical yield.
If, in the above examples, cyclopentadecanolone is used in greater dilution, the amount of the residue decreases and the yields increase.
