Accounting machine The present invention relates to an accounting machine of the adding type, capable of carrying out multiplications by repeated additions, or conversely divisions by repeated subtractions.
Such machines have a totalizer and a recorder movable with respect to one another, the recorder being provided with registration or ganes aligned and regularly spaced, to represent the digits inputted into the machine and for transfer these numbers to the totalizer.
In such a machine, the number entered in the recorder is transferred, into the totalizer, by one revolution of the machine, either once in the case of an addition, or a number of times equal to the multiplier for a multiplication. .
When a multiplication is carried out with a simple adding accounting machine, the number of successive turns which corresponds to the value of the multiplier must be counted by the operator and this number, not recorded by the machine, is difficult to verify.
The adding accounting machines arranged as multipliers, on the contrary, include an annex tachometer which shows the number of revolutions carried out, or else, the multiplier being recorded in advance in this rev counter, the machine performs at- automatically the number of revolutions required which results in the return to zero of this rev counter.
This convenience leads to a complication of the machine, all the more important as the multipliers can be of a decisively higher order, since the tachometer totalisers must have a corresponding number of wheels.
In the case of division, if we operate on a simple adding accounting machine, the quotient is not materialized and must be evaluated by the operator. In an adding accounting machine arranged to multi fold and divide, the quotient appears in the tachometer. However, in both cases, an additional difficulty arises, mainly in automatic machines.
We know, in fact, that, in adding accounting machines arranged to multiply and divide, the division is carried out as follows: for each of the decimal orders, starting with the highest, the divider is subtracted from the dividend until the machine encounters an impossible subtraction, which results in the appearance of a series of 9s to the left of the number entered in the totalizer. In hand-operated machines, the operator can immediately go back as soon as the first digits 9 appear to the left of the apparent number in the totalizer,
while, in automatic machines, they are not engaged in the opposite direction, to cancel the erroneous operation that they have undertaken, only when the last left wheel of the totalizer has reached the number 9 by the set of successive subtractive reports. This results in a significant loss of time and wear and tear on the machine.
The accounting machine according to the invention is characterized in that the recorder is arranged immediately to the left of the normal recording device located furthest to the left, so as not to transmit a figure to the totalizer, but comprises , two rows to the left of the normal recording device located furthest to the left of this recorder, an additional recording device arranged to transfer, into the corresponding wheel of the totalizer, at least the number nine, in an analogous manner Logue to that according to which the normal recording devices transfer the number which they contain to the other wheels of the totalizer, and in that the machine is, moreover, arranged to prevent the transfer of the deductions into the totalizer,
at least at this additional recording device, and that it is provided with an indicator identifying the totalizer wheel which corresponds to the location between the normal recording device located furthest to the left and the 'additional registration body.
Thus, whenever the recorder transfers its contents to the right side of the totalizer, the totalizer wheel engaged with the additional recording member moves nine teeth (either in the additive direction or in the subtractive) and, as this wheel cannot ensure a transfer of restraint, said wheel only performs, each time in one of its directions of rotation, nine tenths of a turn, which is equivalent to a rotation of one tenth of a turn in the other way.
Consequently, in the case of a turn in the additive direction, the figure on this wheel is reduced by one unit, while, in the case of a turn in the subtractive direction, this figure is increased. one unit. In other words, this totalizer wheel operates as a decreasing revolution counter in the case of a multiplication, and as a progressive rev counter in the case of a division.
Thus, by the only cooperation of the recorder and the totalizer, in their relative movement, at each revolution of the machine, we obtain directly, in the left part of the totalizer, the recording of the revolutions made by the machine, that is to say the control of the multiplier by progressive erasure of this multiplier if it is carried to the left of the multiplicand in the totalizer, or the gradual appearance of the quotient to the left of the dividend if it is carried in the totalizer.
In addition, the embodiments of the invention are simpler when the totalizer does not include its own carry-forward mechanism and when these transfers are carried out by the recorder itself. Indeed, in the opposite case, it is necessary to provide an auxiliary device which immobilizes the device for transferring the deductions of the totalizer, at least in front of the additional recorder.
The embodiments comprising a totalizer which can be shifted relative to the recorder allow the full capacity of this totalizer to be used.
Indeed, during the multiplication, in the right part of this totalizer, the number written can grow in decimal order, while the erasing of the successive digits of the multiplier, progressing from right to left, frees the wheels of the totalizer capable of receiving the product figures.
Conversely, in the division, the number of significant digits of the quotient can increase in the left part of the totalizer, because the successive remainders of the dividend become smaller.
The indicator is preferably constituted by a window which frames the visible figure of the corresponding totalizer wheel. In the embodiments with a fixed recorder and movable totalizer, this indicator is also fixed, while in the embodiments with a movable recorder with respect to the totalizer, itself fixed in the machine, this indicator integral with the recorder moves along the totalizer.
In an advantageous embodiment, it is possible to cancel the action of the additional recording member. This cancellation can be achieved by causing the additional recorder to transfer the number 10 instead of the number 9, so that the totalizer wheel completes a full revolution and indicates the same number after each revolution.
This operation is used for simple addition or subtraction, or before using the multiplication machine for the introduction of the multiplier in the left part of the totalizer.
In another embodiment, it is possible to transfer, by the additional recording device, either the number 1 or the number 11.
In this case, the corresponding totalizer wheel advances by one unit in the ad ditive direction during the multiplication, and in the subtractive direction during the division. The left part of the totalizer then functions as a direct tachometer and makes it possible to display, as a check, the multiplier in the left part of the totalizer or to make the quotient disappear in the event of a division for the verification of the latter.
Note, however, 1.) that, in this case, it is not possible to directly show the quotient of the division, 2.) that, in the multiplication, the totalizer cannot be used with its full capacity, because the multiplier and the successive sums of the partial products up to the final product are entered, at the same time, in increasing decimal orders in the totalizer.
Certain embodiments may be adding-type accounting machines, capable of automatically performing the multiplications and divisions.
In fact, in the multiplication by erasure of the successive digits of the multiplier, the offset of the recorder must be effected when the totalizer wheel, located opposite the additional recording member, has returned to zero; the offset of the recorder and the series of revolutions of the latter can therefore be controlled by an engagement or release device reacting during the zero crossing of the totalizer wheel in question.
In the division, the reversal of the movement of the machine intended to erase the last erroneous subtraction operation can be triggered by the overhaul of the wheel if killed opposite the indicator. The number of wheels of the totalizer on which appears, in the totalizer, the number nine, is therefore much smaller than in usual machines and as, as the writing of the quotient progresses, the recorder progresses to the right of the totalizer, the number of wheels on which the number 9 is likely to appear is increasingly reduced. This results in an appreciable gain in the duration of the division operations.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, three embodiments of the machine forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment consisting of a comp table machine of the Odhner wheel type.
Fig. 2 shows a second embodiment consisting of a comp table machine of the Thomas coach type.
Fig. 3 shows a third embodiment consisting of a comp table machine of the type called 'with stopped racks.
Fig 4 is a side view of the machine shown in Fig 3.
Fig. 5 illustrates the execution of a multiplication by means of machines such as those of FIGS. 1 and 2.
Fig. 6 illustrates the execution of a division on these same machines. Finally, fig. 7 illustrates the execution of the same multiplication on the machine shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. Figs. 1 to 4 represent only the organs necessary for the understanding of the invention. The other members, not shown, are identical to those of the usual machines.
The machine shown in fig. 1 comprises a frame 1 supporting a certain number of coaxial Odhner wheels of the usual type, of which the last 2, located furthest to the left in the case of a normal recorder, is only represented. In addition, in this figure, the various members have, for clarity, been shown separated from each other.
It will be recalled that an Odhner wheel is essentially constituted by a disc provided, at its periphery, with retractile teeth 3 and, inside, with a ramp intended to make these teeth protrude, which can be maneuver by means of a second disc 4 attached to the disc 2. This disc 4 comprises a cursor 4a whose position thus determines the number of teeth 3 projecting on the disc, in other words the number recorded in the wheel. Each disc comprises, in addition, two lugs 5a and 5b intended to ensure the transfers, the first in the case of addition, the second in the case of subtraction.
We know, in fact, that these lugs are movable in the direction of the axis of the wheels against springs and that their translation can be ensured by means of a part 6 called a horse's head, provided with two ramps, one on its upper face and the other on its lower face, to ensure the axial displacement, to the left, of these lugs when the corresponding totalizer wheel goes from zero to nine, or vice versa, so that these pins then feel the higher decimal order totalizer wheel move forward or backward one tooth.
In such a machine, the totalizer 7 can slide parallel to the axis of the Odhner wheels. This totalizer comprises intermediate pins 8 rotating on an axis 9 and engaging the teeth and lugs of Odhner's wheels and meshing with pins 10 of the wheels 11 of the actual totalizer, a number of which is readable at through a window 7a of the frame. The totalizer comprises a certain number of sets analogous to that which has just been described, each of which comprises a pinion 8 ', 8 ", etc., and a wheel 11", etc ...
When the machine is made to complete a revolution, the teeth 3 of the Odhner wheels, made active by the recording of a number, act on one of the pinions 8, 8 ', etc., and , consequently, on the wheels 11, 11 ', etc., of the totalizer, so as to transport, in this totalizer, the number contained in the recorder.
If the wheels 2 turn in the direction of the arrow F, the number carried in the recorder is added to that which already existed in the totalizer, while, if the wheels 2 turn in the direction of the arrow F ', this number is subtracted.
When a wheel 11, Il '. etc. of totalizer goes from 9 to 0, in the direction of addition, or from 0 to 9, in the direction of subtraction, by the set of organs not shown the corresponding horse head 6 is introduced on the path of the wheel 2 which is then engaged with the corresponding pinion 8, which causes a displacement, to the left, of one of the lugs 5a or 5b according to the direction of rotation and, consequently, the action of this lug on the pin located immediately to the left, for example the pinion 8 'in the case of the figure, which causes the advance or retreat of one unit of the totalizer wheel located immediately to the left, in other words the carryover of addition or subtraction deduction according to the direction of rotation of the machine.
The machine whose description has just been recalled therefore comprises 1.) A fixed recorder provided with a certain number of recording members, each of which has a number of active teeth equal to that of the figure entered therein.
2.) A totalizer that can be moved in translation with respect to the recorder, this totalizer not including its own device for carrying the deductions, the latter being carried by the recording devices (pins 5a, 5b) .
The machine which has just been described is completed, to the left of the last recording device 2, by a disc 12 devoid of teeth which constitutes a spacer of the thickness of one of said recording devices, and by an additional recording member consisting of a second disc 13, similar to an Odhner wheel, but which is provided, at its periphery, with nine fixed teeth 14. Two complementary teeth 15 and 16, of the retractile type, may optionally be added to this disc, in the manner of the teeth of Odhner's wheels, by the operation of the slider 17a of a disc 17.
In addition, the frame 1 of the machine comprises a fixed tab 18, provided with a window 19 which is located to the right of the said 12, that is to say with free space whose width is equal to the thickness of a recording organ which is between the last organ on the left 2 and the additional recording organ.
The realization of a multiplication, illustrated by fig. 5, with the machine which has just been described, will make its operation clearly understood.
This is the product of 16 (multiplicand) by 12 (multiplier).
The first operation is to register the multiplier 12 towards the left end of the totalizer. To this end, the totalizer is brought, with respect to the normal wheels 2 of the recorder, so that the last wheel of this totalizer is opposite the last left wheel 2 of the recorder. The multiplier, 12 in this case, is carried in the recorder with its last. left-hand figure in the last left-hand Odhner wheel, so that the arrangement shown schematically in fig. 5a. The last two wheels on the left of the recorder contain the digits 1 and 2 respectively, the next ones are at 0 and the disc 13 (additional recording device) is not engaged with any totalizer wheel.
By turning the machine in the ad ditive direction, the number 12 appears to the left of the totalizer. The number 12 is then erased from the registrar and the multiplicand, 16 in this case, is entered there in the same way as for the multiplier (fig. 5b). The totalizer is then shifted to the left (FIG. 5c), so that window 19 is opposite the first zero if killed to the right of the recorded multiplier.
In this position, the last two wheels on the left 2 which contain the number 16 are in engagement with the two totalizer wheels located to the right of the window, the disc 12 is in front of this window 19 and the disc 13 is in engagement with the totalizer wheel bearing the units digit (2) of the multiplier.
If the machine is then made to make one turn in the additive direction (fig. 5d), the multiplier 16 enters the totalizer to the right of window 19, while the number 9 is added to the units digit of the multiplier. but, as this addition is carried out without transfer since the disc 13 does not have transfer members (pins 5a and 5b), it is the number 11 which appears instead of the number 21 in the left part of the totalizer; in other words, everything happens as if the totalizer wheel, located opposite the wheel 13, had turned in the direction subtractive by one unit.
By a second rotation in the additive direction, the units digit of the multiplier is canceled and, to the right of window 19, the partial product of the multiplicand by the units digit of the multiplier appears (fig. 5e).
There is thus a control of the accuracy of the number of revolutions made by the machine by canceling this figure of the multiplier.
To continue the multiplication, the totalizer is then shifted by one unit to the right (fig. 5f), which introduces the multiplicand into this totalizer with the immediately higher decimal order. In the example chosen, a single revolution of the machine then cancels the last figure (1) visible to the left of the totalizer, and the product appears to the right of window 19.
In the example illustrated, no carryover was transmitted to disk 12. It is easy to realize that this carryover, in a multiplication, would have been at most 9 and that it suffices, therefore, to provide a single separation interval in the totalizer between the multiplier and the partial products of the multiplicand at each of the decimal orders. The corresponding totalizer wheel is indicated by window 19.
The same arrangement allows, as shown in fig. 6, to carry out the divisions. Or, in this case, to divide 192 (dividend) by 16 (divisor).
This time, as shown in fig. 6a, the dividend 192 is entered in the totalizer, to the right of window 19, this window being arranged such that at least one wheel remains available to the left of this window in the totalizer. Without special precautions, the disc 13, comprising nine teeth, would transport, in the totalizer, in the wheel situated to the left of the window 19, the number 9, which would distort the subsequent result. It is therefore necessary, at the time of the registration of the dividend (192) to act on the cursor 17a of the disc 13, so as to make the tooth 15 protrude on this disc.
At this moment, the entry of 192 in the totalizer, in the additive sense, causes the number 10 to be entered to the left of window 19, so that this wheel makes a complete revolution and returns to 0. The dividend being thus entered in the totalizer, the divider (16) is introduced into the recorder, facing the highest decimal order corresponding to the possible subtraction, taking the precaution of erasing tooth 15, so that the disc 13 does not has more than nine teeth. The initial situation is shown in the diagram in FIG. 6b.
We then make a machine turn in the subtractive direction (fig. 6c). In the right part of the totalizer 160 is subtracted from 192, while in the left part 9 is subtracted from 10 so that the number 1 appears, thus registering the first turn of the machine.
The machine is then made a second turn in the subtractive direction, in other words an attempt is made to subtract 160 from the remainder 32 obtained after the first subtraction. As this operation is impossible by the set of postponements, the number 9 appears in window 19, which informs the operator of this impossibility. All that remains for the latter to do is to go back to cancel this erroneous operation (fig 6e), which restores the situation in fig. 6c.
The totalizer is then shifted by a decimal order by a movement to the left of it and two successive subtractions (fig. 6g and 6h) cancel the partial remainder 32 and, at the same time, reveal the second signi ficient of the quotient, namely the number 2, to the left of window 19.
We thus realize that the significant figures of the quotient appear one after the other in the left part of the totalizer, as we shift the latter, while the partial remains, as we go. as they decrease, move to the right of this totalizer. In the case of an irrational quotient, it is thus possible to obtain a number of significant figures equal to that of the totalizer wheels minus one, namely that which is occupied by the window 19.
Fig. 2 shows an embodiment in which the recorder is of the Thomas trainer type.
It is known that a Thomas trainer, one of which is indicated by the number 20, has, on a cylindrical drum, a series of nine teeth 20a all extending over a different length of the drum. All the coaches simultaneously perform a complete revolution on each revolution of the machine thanks to a shaft 21 and to angle pinions 22. In front of each of the Thomas coaches is placed a pin 23 capable of sliding along a square shaft 24. The position of the pinion 23 along the cylinder 20, which determines the number of active teeth of the driver, can be chosen by means of a cam 25 provided with notches 25a and ramps 25b of length gradually increasing.
In front of each of the ram pes are arranged the keys of the writer, one of which is shown at 26. Due to the progressively increasing length of the ramps 25b, the depression of a key 26 to the bottom of the corresponding notch causes a translation of the cam 25 proportional to the recorded figure. This translation of the cam 25 ensures the displacement of the pinion 23 along the driver, so that this displacement is such that the number of teeth 20a of this driver, in engagement with the pinion 23, corresponds to the recorded figure. A return-to-zero device 27 makes it possible to return all the pinions 23 to their original position on the coaches in order to cancel the registrations.
The revolutions of the machine are transmitted, at the same time, to a shaft 28 carrying sleeves 29 provided with helical ramps. In these ramps are engaged the lugs of the oscillating levers 30 which thus, on each revolution of the machine, perform, in the direction corresponding to that of the rotation, a back and forth movement according to the arrow 31. On each one square shafts 24 can slide a pin 32, normally separated from the finger 33 carried by the oscillating lever 30 corresponding.
The totalizer carriage, indicated schematically by the dotted outline 34, comprises wheels 35 each carrying, at their periphery, a series of numbers from 0 to 9. These wheels turn around axes parallel to the ar bers 24. Each wheel 35 is integral with a pin 36 which meshes with a pinion 37 carried at the end of the square shaft 24. Each of the pins 37 carries a lug 38 capable of acting on an oscillating lever 39 normally returned by a spring. 40. When the wheel goes from 9 to 0 in the additive direction, or from 0 to 9 in the subtractive direction, the lug 38 pushes the corresponding lever 39 which, in turn, by the intermediary of Z-shaped pushers 41 , pushes the pinion 32 of higher decimal order to bring it onto the path of the corresponding finger 33.
Thus, a number, the figures of which are characterized by the relative position of each of the pinions 23 with respect to the corresponding coaches 20, is introduced into the totalizer, either in the additive direction or in the subtractive direction, according to the direction of rotation of the machine, in that each of the shafts 24 rotates by the number of teeth corresponding to the position of each of the pinions 23 and drives the corresponding totalizer wheel. When this wheel goes from 0 to 9 or from 9 to 0 depending on the direction of rotation, the pinion 32, immediately to the left, is moved until it engages with the finger 33, so that an additional unit is found. transmitted to the wheel immediately to the left of the one performing the transfer.
This known machine is completed as follows To the left of the last Thomas trainer are arranged a pinion 42, sliding on a square shaft 43 without Thomas trainer, a Z-shaped pusher 41a cooperating with this pin and the oscillating lever 30a of transfer re held. In front of this assembly is fixed a tab 18 carrying a window 19. To the left of the shaft 43 is arranged a second square shaft 44 carrying a sliding pinion 45.
Opposite this pinion is arranged an additional recorder, that is to say in this case a trainer 46 which comprises, towards one of its ends, nine teeth 47 and, towards the other end, a tooth unique 48, while its middle part is smooth. Thanks to a shaft 49, this trainer turns, by means of an angle transmission 50, in the same way as the Thomas trainers of the recorder. A net ma 51, integral with a lever 52, makes it possible to move in translation, by an arm 53 of this lever, the pinion 45 on the square shaft 44.
This pinion can thus be engaged, either with the part of the driver 46 comprising nine teeth, or with the tooth 48, or to leave it disengaged in the middle position. The three corresponding positions are indicated by an index which moves in front of indications 1, 0, 9. A spring lock 54 immobilizes the lever 52 in the chosen position.
It is easy to see that this machine works exactly, from the point of view of result, like the one illustrated in fig. 1. In fact, when the pinion 44 is engaged with the teeth 47, the adjusting wheel, located to the left of the one whose gra duation appears in the window 19, performs, each time, nine tenths of a turn in the same direction as the other totalizer wheels and this totalizer wheel neither receives nor transmits a carry. On the contrary, the wheel located in front of the window can receive the additive or subtractive transfers, but is not engaged with a trainer.
The same operations can thus be carried out as those which have been described with reference to FIGS. 5 and 6.
When, in the machine shown in FIG. 1, both teeth 15 and 16 are brought out, as in the case where pinion 45, in FIG. 2, is engaged with the single tooth 48, the corresponding totalizer wheel advances by one unit each time in the same direction as the other totalizer wheels, with the only difference that, in the case of FIG. 1, this wheel performs eleven tenths of a turn and, in the case of FIG. 2, only one tenth of a turn. It is thus possible to carry out a multiplication by making the multiplier appear in the part of the totalizer, at the same time as the successive partial products are added in the right part of the totalizer.
Figs. 3 and 4 relating to an embodiment consisting of an adding machine of the type with stopped racks and a simplified keyboard.
Machines of this type include a shuttle (recorder) 55 provided with pins 56 whose successive rows correspond to each of the decimal orders and the alignments to each of the digits from 0 to 9, which may be introduced into the machine for each of these decimal orders.
The introduction of the digits into the machine is obtained by means of a simplified keyboard 57 (fig. 4), that is to say of a keyboard with ten keys corresponding to the nine significant digits and to the zero. ie to the decisive order shift without entering a significant digit.
Under the shuttle are arranged rods 58 in a number equal to that of the wheels 59 of the totalizer minus one. In fact, the wheel 59a at the end of the left of this totalizer is intended simply to record the reported deductions. The rods 58 are articulated on toothed circular sec tors 60 each of which meshes with a pinion 61 which, in turn, meshes with a totalizer wheel 59. As is known, such a machine may include, or be, a device. printout of the results.
Each time that a key of the simplified keyboard 57 is pressed, at the same time that one of the pins 56 of one of the pin alignments is pressed, these alignments are shifted by a row by means of a mechanism exhaust system schematically in FIG. 3 by an anchor 62 which cooperates with a toothing 63 of the shuttle.
It is known that, in such machines, the shuttle is initially arranged to the right of the set of rods 58 and that, as and when the figures are introduced into the registrar, in this case the shuttle, in the normal order of enunciation of these figures, this ship shifts, thanks to the anchor 62, by as much. notches that there have been recorded digits, so that the last digit inscribed is automatically the ones digit, because the pin alignment corresponding to this inscribed digit comes in front of the last rod 58 from the right of the machine.
Each of the rods 58 comprises, towards its end, two teeth 58a and 58b (FIG. 4). Opposite the end of each of the rods is placed a stop pawl 64 which has three branches 64a, 64b and 64c. For its part, the boat is equipped with a stop bar 65.
When, a number having been recorded, the shuttle has taken its position relative to the rods 58, by tilting a ramp 66 for releasing the racks, all the stop pawls are released. Therefore, the branches 64c of all these pawls tend to hook onto the teeth 58b of the rods 58 (FIG. 4). However, due to the movement of the shuttle, the bar 65 of the latter has come to rest on the path of the branches 64b of the pawls which correspond to the rods 58 in front of which the shuttle is located.
Thus, the rods 58 located beyond the shuttle are hooked by the pawls and cannot move, tan say that those which are in front of the shuttle are free to move. These rods therefore initiate a movement in the direction of arrow 67 in FIG. 4, but this movement is limited, for each of them, by the projection formed, under the shuttle, by the corresponding depressed pin 56 on which the tooth 58a of the rod 58 concerned abuts. Thus, only a movement corresponding to a number of teeth equal to the number inscribed in each of the alignments of the shuttle is transmitted to each of the sectors 60.
This known machine is completed by the following members First, the stop bar 65 can slide along the shuttle thanks to a lever 68 and elongated openings 69, so that this bar can protrude, on the left of this shuttle, with a length equal to twice the distance between two consecutive rods 58. In this way, in the movement of the shuttle, the action of the stop pawls 64 is prevented for two additional rods 58 located to the left of those which are directly concerned by the inscription of the recorded number. In addition, under the shuttle, a fixed projection 70 is provided which prevents the movement of the corresponding rod 58 in the same way as a usual zero key.
Thus, the first rod 58, located to the left of the rods interested in registration in the shuttle, is immobilized at 0. Consequently, this rod cannot transfer a number into the totalizer and 1 < <corresponding totalizer wheel can only receive reports. The rod 58, located immediately to the left thereof, can, on the contrary, complete a complete stroke, that is to say up to a fixed stop (not shown) corresponding to the number nine, so that, when the set of rods 58 is released, this last rod carries the number 9 in the corresponding wheel of the totalizer.
However, in such machines, the to talisator is provided with a transfer system generally constituted by bars 71. It is therefore appropriate that this machine can be used in the same way as the machines shown by the machines. fig. 1 and 2, that the transmission of transfers is prevented in the totalizer, at least in front of the rod 58 which automatically performs, in the manner indicated, a stroke equal to 9. To this end, the left edge of the shuttle has a lever 72 returned by a spring 73, which lever carries, at its end, a plate 74 coming opposite the ends of the bars 71.
When this lever is in the position shown in solid lines in the figure, the play of the re ports is stopped in the totalizer in the left part of it from the totalizer wheel located in front of the rod 58 which completes a complete race. Thus, in the wheel located in front of this rod, the number 9 is introduced without transfer to the following wheels. When, on the contrary, the plate 74 is lowered to the position 74a, the machine operates as a normal adder.
The sliding of the plate 65 and the movement of the lever 72 are combined by a mutual locking mechanism. To this end, the lever 72 comprises, towards the rear, a pro longing 75 which extends to opposite the left end of the sliding bar 65. The latter is provided at its end with a 'a heel 76 which comes in front of the spout 75a of the protrusion 75. Thus, it is not possible to slide, by means of the lever 68, the rette bar 65 of two notches to the left, if one does not 'has not previously exerted, on the lever 72, a traction which lowers the extension 75 and places the plate 74 in the active position, in other words if the device for blocking the carry forward has not been made active.
Conversely, this device for blocking the carry forward cannot be kept in the active position if the sliding bar 65 is not pushed to the left. Indeed, when, having lowered the extension 75 to allow the passage of the heel 76, the bar 65 is pushed to the left, the interposition of this bar on the upward vertical path of the spout 75a prevents, this time, the lever 72 d 'obey the spring 73 and the retainer locking device is hand held in the active position.
The machine thus arranged is then able to perform the operations in the manner described with reference to FIGS. 5 and 6. The operating process is shown schematically in FIG. 7.
Beforehand, it will be noted that the window 19 is carried by a tab 18 integral, this time, with the shuttle, since, in such a machine, it is the recorder which moves relative to the totalizer which is fixed.
The digits of the wheels 59 are visible on the machine through a fixed window 77 with respect to which, on the_fig. 7, the rods 58 are shown schematically by vertical dotted lines. Initially (fig. 7a), the shuttle 55 is completely free, to the right, from the rods 58, and the window 19 is located opposite the first zero on the right of the totalizer, all of the wheels of which are initially at 0. Either to be carried out , as before, the multiplication of 16 by 12.
The numbers 1 and - 2 are successively typed on the reduced keypad @ 57. With each keystroke, the shuttle 55 shifts one notch to the left. To bring the number 12, thus written, to the left of the totalizer, the operator presses the zero key a number of successive times until window 19 comes opposite the last left wheel of the totalizer, namely that which is not linked to a rod 58. These various operations are shown diagrammatically in FIG. 7a.
By pressing the addition key, the entry carried in the shuttle is transported to the totalizer and the latter then bears the figures indicated by the upper part of fig. 7b. In this movement, the shuttle has taken its initial position to the far right of the totalizer. The left end of the sliding bar 65 then being located beyond the last left rod 58, the complementary arrangement described could not have had any influence on the entry in the totalizer.
Similarly, the multiplicand is then carried into the totalizer by successively hitting the digits 1 and 6 then a certain number of zeros until the window 19 has come opposite the first zero located to the right of the carried multiplier. in the totalizer. At this moment, the shuttle is, with respect to the totalizer, in the relative position shown diagrammatically at the bottom of FIG. 7b, that is to say that in front of the window 19, the stop 70 immobilizes the corresponding rod 58, while the rod 58 located immediately to the left thereof is capable of carrying the figure 9 in the corresponding wheel of the totalizer. These possibilities are indicated by the dotted figures 9 and 0 which are virtually inscribed in the shuttle.
By pressing the repeat key for the first time, the number entered in the totalizer becomes the one indicated in fig. 7c. By pressing a second time, the result shown in FIG. 7d, in other words the ones digit of the multiplier has been canceled. You then hit the zero key on the keyboard, which shifts the na vette one notch to the left (fig. 7e). It was then sufficient to press the repeat key once to cancel the tens digit. The multiplier being canceled, the product 192 appears in the totalizer.
In order to prevent, when the shuttle returns to the extreme right of the machine, that the stop 70 is interposed on the path of the last rod 58 on the right of the machine, which would hamper the return to zero of this rod, the toothing 63 comprises a first tooth 63a of larger dimensions than those of the following teeth. Towards the end of the race to the right of the shuttle, the stop 70 is thus moved away from the right of the first rod 58.
As indicated in fig. 3, the machine can be supplemented to allow, instead of the systematic transport of the number 9, the systematic transport of the number 1, by the rod 58 located immediately to the left of that which is located opposite the stop 70.
To this end, the shuttle comprises an additional button 78 subjected to a return spring 79. The end of the rod 80 of this button can act on a lever 81 bent in the form of a stirrup. This lever is itself subjected to an elastic wire spring 82 which tends to hold it up. The branch 81a, when the button 78 is pressed, is therefore likely to land on the path of the rod 58 located immediately to the left of that which is opposite the stop 70 to limit the travel of this rod when the number 1 is written.
As before, the operation of the button 78 is subject to the movement of the sliding bar 65. In fact, the lever 81 comprises, beyond its hinge axis 83, a notch 84. When the bar 65 is pushed to the right , the return springs 79 and 82 prevent the lever 81 from being maintained in its lower position. On the other hand, if, having pressed on this button 78, the bar 65 is then moved, the edge of the plate enters the notch 84, which maintains the lever 81 in the low position.
Of course, as before, movement to the left of the bar 65 can only be obtained if the lever 72 has been actuated beforehand which locks it and controls the device for locking the retainers.
