The present invention relates to an accessory device for a cycle-type vehicle provided with a luggage carrier, the surface of which is practically horizontal, device comprising means making it integral with this rack.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of this device according to the invention.
Figure 1 is an overview in perspective.
Fig. 2 is a partial plan view and partially in axial section, on a larger scale than in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section along <I> 111-11l </I> of FIG. 2 double scale.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a detail of FIG. 2 at quadruple scale.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of another detail on the same scale as FIG. 4.
Fig. 1 shows the rear of a bicycle 2 fitted with a luggage carrier 3 fixed above the rear wheel 5 on the one hand in the top of the fork 2a of this wheel by its front end and on the other share at the bottom of this fork by two tubes 3a supporting the rear of its lateral sides. This luggage carrier could include an accessory device serving to exert on the luggage a force from top to bottom to retain them.
Such a device is not shown, being already known. It is assumed here replaced or completed by an accessory device 6 comprising elbow bars B and B 'movable in a frame 9 made of two separable halves 9a and 9b and fixed to the tubes 3a by brackets 7 and 7' (fig. 1 to 3).
The two halves 9a and 9b of the frame 9 have a general semi-cylindrical shape and such as resulting from the axial cut of a cylinder which would have been previously perforated longitudinally along two axes located in the plane of this cut and symmetrically eccentric with respect to the axis of this initial cylinder, so that the opposite faces of the two halves each present two semi-cylindrical grooves or grooves 8 and 8 '.
The two halves 9a and 9b can be replaced so that the axes of their peripheral surfaces coincide when interposing, between their grooves, rectilinear bodies of suitable size such as tubes 8a and 8d. These halves can be assembled in this position by means of a screw 10 provided with an outer head 10a and mounted in a diametrical perforation made in the middle of their common length.
This screw freely passes through the half 9a against which it bears by a bearing 10b, while its threaded part 10c is screwed into the half 9b and carries, on the outside thereof, two nuts 11, one of which serves as against the other nut to fix their assembly in a position determined relative to the scope 10b. These nuts therefore rotate with the screw when the tubes 8a and 8a 'are clamped between the two halves and by their position limit the release stroke to a value allowing these tubes to slide in the grooves 8, 8'.
The threaded part of the half 9b is reinforced by a steel plate 9c screwed against it, in a notch thereof, since the halves 9a and 9b are provided as cast from a light alloy in which a customary pitch thread is not would not present sufficient resistance.
The frame 9 has a length of the same order of magnitude as the width of the luggage rack and it is arranged so that the slides formed by the grooves 8 and 8 'are parallel to this width and that it is practically tan under the upper plane of the luggage rack.
When the tubes 8a and 8a 'are fixed in the frame by tightening the screw 10, they themselves constitute slides for branches b1 and b1' which belong respectively to one and to the other of the two bent bars B and B 'of which other respective branches b2 and b2' extend for the most part parallel to a plane perpendicular to the axes of the branches b1 and b1 '.
In the example shown, the plane of separation of the two halves of the frame is arranged vertically, having regard to the conformation accepted for the brackets 7 and 7 ', the ends of which are bent so as to present a vertical section through which they are applied against the edges of a T-shaped groove made from each end of the half 9b to the proximity of the piece of steel 9c. Similar grooves are made in the half 9a for cases where the consoles 7 and 7 'should carry the frame 9 between them and the luggage rack. We see that this frame is fixed to the consoles by means of bolts 16 whose heads are engaged in the groove 15 of the half 9b and nuts 17 of these bolts.
We see that if the consoles ended horizontally, the tubes 8a and 8a would be at the same level, while they are here at different heights. The role of the branches b2 and b2 'being to retain the baggage against the forces tending to move them laterally, they must be able to be brought to the side of the bags and at their height, preferably being parallel to each other when 'they are immobilized in their useful positions by the means described below with reference to FIG. 4.
By the fact that the bar B 'is lower than the bar B, it must be bent otherwise than the latter, as can be seen in figs. 1 and 2. While the branches b1 and <I> b2 </I> are in the same plane, a first bend of the bar B 'allows a second bend to bring the branch b2' into a position such that the plane containing its axis and parallel to the axis of the branch b1 'is at a distance from this axis equal to the distance of the axes of the tubes 8a and 8a'.
Each of these tubes protrudes from the frame 9 on the side of the outlet of the branch that it contains, b1 for one, b1 'for the other. On their projecting part, they first carry a ring 19, the second a ring 19 'welded to them and prealy perforated with a diametrical hole 20 extending into a protrusion designated by 19a in FIG. 4 where the thing is shown with regard to the tube 8a in which the branch b1 is introduced from the left.
In the perforation 20 of the protrusion 19a is mounted a rod 21 having a collar 21a against which bears a coil spring 24 compressed between this collar and the bottom of the hole 20 which would be blind if it were not extended by a longer hole. small guiding the rod 21 to which is fixed a head 22 outside the protrusion 19a.
The part of the rod 21 which extends on the other side of the collar serves to secure the branch b1 and the tube 8a by penetrating, under the action of the res out 24, into one or the other of several holes 23 facts radially in branch b1. The head 22 allows it to be released when it is desired to slide the branch b1 in order to adjust the position of the branch b2 with respect to the baggage which may be wider than the luggage carrier. For the lower rod b1 ′ contained in the sliding tube 8a ′, a head 22 ′ of the device analogous to the ring 19 ′ is turned downwards at the end to the right of the frame 9.
We notice in fig. 2 and 3 of the oblique sides 12 and 12 'which laterally limit the longitudinal openings of this frame partially uncovering the tubes 8a and 8a' over part of their length from their ends opposite the rings 19 and 19 'to surfaces located in the same transverse plane and designated by 14 with regard to the tube 8a visible in FIG. 2. These surfaces are closer to the left end of the frame than to the right end, while similar surfaces, not shown, limit the length of the lower opening closer to the right end than to the left end.
These surfaces serve as stops limiting the sliding of the tubes 8a and 8a 'outwards, these tubes each carrying, at its end opposite the ring 19 or 19', a square piece 25 or 25 'fixed laterally on it by a tenon 25a (fig. 5). The width of this part is substantially equal to the diameter of the tubes 8a or 8a '; this allows rotation of these tubes in the grooves 8, when they are loosened, over an angle of about a quarter of a turn limited by the flanks 12 which the sides of the part 25 or 25 'meet over the major part of the length of the frame.
When these parts are in their position shown in FIG. 2, this maximum angle of rotation of the tubes 8a and 8a 'is increased on one side by an enlargement of the two openings of the frame such that, over a fraction of the length, it is a sidewall 13, respectively 13' , which limits the rotation of the tubes in one direction by stopping the part 25 from one and 25 'from the other.
This is done for safety reasons, this sense being such that, in the event that the tubes 8a and 8â are untimely loosened, the weight of the branches <I> b2 </I> and <I> b2 '</I> in their position of use in FIG. 2 would produce a rotation of the bars b1 and b1 'bringing the parts 25 and 25' into contact with the sides 13 and 13 '. In this position, the tubes 8a and 8a 'are prevented from sliding outwards more than the length of the sidewalls 13 and 13' allows, the parts 25 and 25 'being stopped by the small transverse walls which limit the length. widenings of each longitudinal opening of the frame.
We understand that there are two ways of separating the branches <I> b2 </I> and <I> b2 '</I> of the luggage rack according to the dimensions of the luggage, the first by not moving the branches b1 and b1 'only inside the tubes 8a and 8a', the second by moving these tubes themselves after having loosened them momentarily by means of the screw 10. To adjust the inclination of the bars <I> b2 </I> and <I> b2 ', </I> we also loosen the tubes in order to be able to turn them by the desired angle.
But the holes 23 of bars b1 and <I> b1 '</I> could be made in various axial planes of these bars making acute dihedral angles between them, which would also make it possible to fix the bars <I> b2 </ I> and <I> b2 '</I> in various inclinations without loosening or turning the tubes 8a and 8a'.
Instead of being semi-cylindrical, the grooves 8, 8 'could have a V-profile. Parallel slides for the bars B and B' could be formed in all other ways by any other rigid frames fixing to the rear. laughter of a luggage rack.
Bars B and B 'could be mounted behind the scenes without the intermediary of tubes such as tubes 8a and 8a' forming telescopic elements increasing the possibility of spacing between branches <I> b2 </I> and <I > b2 '. </I> In the type of construction shown, it would suffice that their diameters and that of the grooves 8, 8' are equal. The screw 10 could be replaced by external clamping members, for example.
