Figs. 7 and 8 show, by two schematic views, the amplitude of the pivoting of the carrier arm during the passage of the chain from a pinion of large diameter to a pinion of small diameter, in a gear change device of the arm type pivoting carrier and tensioning arm pivoted at one end.
Figs. 9 and 10 show, by two schematic views, the reduced amplitude of the pivoting of the carrier arm during the passage of the chain from a pinion of large diameter to a pinion of small diameter, in a gear changing device conforming to the 'invention.
This speed change device comprises: a support member used for mounting the speed change device on the cycle frame. This member is formed by the fixing lug 1 which is applied to the lug 21 of the frame 2. The fixing lug 1 has an open slot 1i which corresponds to the slot of the lug 21- of the frame. The bottom of the slot 1i constitutes a constant positioning stop for the axis 3 of the wheel, which facilitates the reassembly of the latter.
The fixing of the tab 1 on the. lug 21 of the frame is operated using the screw 4 integral with the lug 1. The screw 4 passes through the slot of the frame lug and locking is effected using a rear nut 5, one of which scope is pledged in the slot of the frame tab.
The gear change device could still be mounted on the frame without a fixing bracket, simply on a soldered eye or welded to the frame bracket, this #il forming a support organ.
Besides its attachment to the frame of the cycle, the gear change device mainly comprises members for moving transversely; chain on the sprockets of the rear hub, as well as organs for tensioning the chain, whatever the length of the free end.
The catching up of the length of the free end of the chain results from an arrangement of the pivoting levers under the pressure of appropriate springs. According to this arrangement, the carrier arm 6 of the gear change device is pivotally oriented by an end at 12 on the fixing lug 1.
At the other end of the carrier arm 6 is mounted a reciprocating mechanism; the other lever is in the form of a bent tenor arm 7 which is pivotally oriented at a certain point along its length. This bent tensioning arm, produced for example in the form of two profiled chain guide flanges, carries a support roller on the chain 8 at each end, at 9 and 10.
As indicated in the rest of the description, the support arm 6 receives the tension of a spring which exerts an adjustable thrust directed towards the rear according to arrow F (fig. 1), while the bent tensioning arm also receives the tension. circular tension of the spring of the reciprocating mechanism which tends to make it pivot in the direction of arrow F1 (fig. 1).
It is interesting to compare this general arrangement of the levers of the gear change device in its schematic representation (fig. 9 and 10), with respect to a known arrangement which is comparable to it (fig. 7 and 8), and according to which the supporting arm c (considered to be of the same length as the arm 6) is pivotally oriented at a1 under the thrust, directed towards the rear, of a suitable spring; a ten deur arm b is pivotally centered at a2 under the tension of a spring at the end of arm a, as well as a roller c, the other roller d being centered at the free end of arm b.
According to this embodiment, when the chain passes from the pinion of large diameter e (fig. 7) to the pinion of small diameter f (fig. 8), the additional length of the free end of the chain is caught by the pivoting of the arms, the arm a then moving from angle a.
According to the embodiment of the object of the invention, when the channel 8 is moved from the large diameter pinion (fig. 9) to the small diameter pinion (fig. 10), the tilting of the bent arm 7, centered at an appropriate point of its length, causes a double tilting of the rollers 9 and 10. If we consider the angular arrangement of the rollers with respect to the pivot point 61, for a retreat of the roller 10 corresponding to that of the roller c in fig. 8, the pivoting of the arm 6 is then equal to the angle fl which is smaller than the pivoting angle of the arm a.
Furthermore, the arrangement of the bent arm 7 moves the roller 9 away from the pinions, which makes it possible to possibly mount pinions of large diameter, and facilitates the passage of said roller to catch up with large chain lengths when uses' m double chainring at the bottom bracket.
The reduction in the pivoting amplitude of the arm 6 gives greater operating smoothness and reduces the work of the tension spring.
The circular tension on the support arm 6 is obtained by the action of the spring 11 which is wound around the pivot axis 12, one end of this spring is fixed on the axis, while at the other end the free end 111 presses on the arm 6 by exerting a tension tending to cause it to pivot backwards.
The adjustment of the tension exerted by the res out 11 is made possible by the mounting of the pivot pin 12 (FIG. 5). According to this assembly, the pivot pin 12 is screwed by a threaded portion into the lug 1, and the mited end of the arm 6 is freely adjusted on a smooth surface of the pin 12 while being retained by a collar of said pin . A nut 12 blocks the axis 12 against the lug 1, so as to allow the free pivoting of the arm 6.
The axis 12 is axially drilled to receive a screw 13 on the end of which is screwed the cylindrical part 14 forming against the nut. The spring 11 is wound around the part 14 which is drilled diametrically to engage one end of the spring, the free end 111 of this spring resting on the arm 6, as already indicated. With this arrangement, it is possible to move the part 14 in rotation and then block it with the screw 13, in order to drive the stationary strand of the spring 11 and consequently increase or decrease the tension on the arm 6.
This adjustment is made without modifying or disturbing the combination of pin 12 and nut 12.
The transverse movement of the chain on the stepped gears is obtained using a reciprocating mechanism mounted at the free end of the carrier arm 6.
This reciprocating mechanism comprises a sleeve 15 which is screwed at 61 to the end of the support arm 6. A pin 16 is mounted smoothly by one end shouldered in the sleeve 15. The axial displacement of said pin is limited by its shoulder which abuts the bottom of the socket bore.
The end of the axis 16 carries the bent tension arm 7 which is mounted to pivot on said end and which is centered at an appropriate and suitable point of its length, between the axes of rotation of the rollers 9 and 10.
A coil spring 17, wound around the sleeve 15 and the shaft 16, is put in tension between the arm 6 and the arm 7. This spring acts as a return spring because it tends to move the arm 7 away. and the rollers 9 and 10 of the arm 6. The arm 7 and the rollers 9 and 10 are moved against the spring 17 to drive the chain on the stepped sprockets of the hub. This movement is effected by means of a control by lever acting on a control cable 19 which pulls a chain 18, the end of which is made integral with the axis 16, while allowing independent rotation of the latter. , either by riveting the end of the pin to retain the swollen end of the chain (fig. 3), or by hooking.
The support of the chain 18 is exerted on the axial and rounded flaring of a nut 20 for locking the reciprocating mechanism, a nut which is screwed onto the sleeve 15.
The nut 20 further serves as a centering point for a protective cap 32 which is fitted over said nut and which is fixed in the suitable circular position after adjustment by a set screw 33. The cap 32 has a slot 321 and a hole 322 to allow passage of the chain 18 which is protected from shocks.
In addition to its return function, the coil spring 17 is also used as a tension spring on the arm 7 to drive it in the direction indicated. For this purpose, the spring 17 presses on the arms 6 and 7 through the intermediary of cups each integral with the adjacent arm (welding, riveting or means). In one of these cups is fixed one end of the spring 17, the other end of which is bent to present a radial index 171 which is easy to handle and which can be engaged freely in one of the notches 211 made on the periphery of the corresponding support bowl 21 (fig. 2).
By moving the radial index 171 in the notches 211, it can be seen that, depending on the direction of movement, the circular tension of the spring 17 is increased or decreased, which thus drives the arm 7 more or less strongly. by producing a more or less important tension, of the rollers on the chain 8. The radial index 171, whose position is clearly visible, constitutes a very practical reference for the user by l111 making it possible to easily check the importance of the tension on the chain as well as the magnitude of the increase or decrease in tension when moving this index.
The protection of the reciprocating mechanism members is obtained by the addition of a telescopic spiral leaf spring 23 interposed between the bearing cups of the spring 1.7 and wound around the latter, of the axis 1.6 and of the socket 15 (fig. 3).
This spring 23 has only a protective role which is well provided by the overlapping of the turns, which by being lubricated ensure a tight covering of the aforementioned members. The spring 23 offers no resistance to the movements of the arm 7, and it can be considered as a member whose protective role is important for the correct operation of the gear change device, without being a weight factor. .
It is obvious that, depending on the play and the deformations of certain components, the variable deviations of the stepped gears in the free wheels, it is necessary to carry out a lateral adjustment of the reciprocating mechanism. For this purpose, a washer 24 is mounted on the sleeve 15 between the support arm 6 and the nut 20. The axial recess of this washer is partially circular and has two straight parts 241 (fig. 6) which correspond to flats formed on the sleeve 15. To facilitate handling, the washer 24 has a ridged edge at the periphery (FIG. 2).
As a result, by rotating, in one direction or the other, the washer 24, it also drags the bearing bush 15 of the reciprocating mechanism of the speed changing device. This rotation of the sleeve 15 produces a screwing or unscrewing in the carrier arm 6. As a result, there is a transverse displacement of the reciprocating mechanism carried by the sleeve, and in particular of the arm 7 and its rollers carried at the end of the axle 16.
This transverse adjustment takes place easily, without modifying the tension of the spring 17, the bearing cups (and in particular the cup 21) of the spring 17 not being affected by the rotation of the sleeve 15 as a result of the arrangements described. .
When the tension of the spring 17 has been adjusted as indicated with the aid of its dial index 171, it is important to avoid variations in tension on the chain, which come from the successive passages of the chain 8 on the pins of different diameters, which modifies the amplitude of the pivoting of the arms 6 and 7 as well as the tension angle of the springs.
For this purpose, a bowl-pulley 25 is my rotating tee around the sleeve 15 while being pressed against the support arm 6 by the res out 17 which comes to bear inside the bowl. The latter has a groove 251 on its periphery, in which groove the cable 26 which is fixed at the end on an attachment point 252 of the bowl is wound. The end 172 of the spring 17 is radially bent and engaged in a slot 253 of the cup (Fig. 4). A washer 27 with tabs folded around the cup-pulley 25 (and on either side of the arm 6 to circularly retain the washer) prevents the cable 26 from leaving the groove 251.
Cable 26 joins the pad. support 28 of the sheath 29, in which it engages in parallel with the cable 19 for controlling the reciprocating mechanism (fig. 1). At the outlet of the sheath, the cable 26 is fixed to the cable 19 by a clip 30.
It is obvious that, during each of the commands of the reciprocating mechanism by the cable 19 to pass the chain from one sprocket to another, the cable 26 integral with the control cable 19. will also be towed or released as appropriate, that is to say that the bowl-pulley 25 will be rotated in one direction or the other with the 1.79 end of the spring 17.
Despite the amplitude of the pi voting of the levers, the circular tension exerted by the spring 17 will remain substantially constant since the increase or decrease in tension resulting from the pivoting of the arms 6 and 7 is compensated by a decrease or inverse increase, due to the fact displacement of the end 172.
The tension force on the chain being substantially constant, the wear of the latter is less and the functioning of the components more rational.
The bowl-pulley 25 can also be replaced by a simple bowl secured to the adjacent arm, a bowl in which the spring 17 bears, the end of which is also fixed in said bowl. In this case, the support cup 21 can be located either on the side of the carrier arm 6 or the angled tensioner arm 7.
In the axial extension of the support stud 28 of the sheath, behind the supporting arm 6, is fixed a stop 31 which is intended to limit the rearward pivoting of the supporting arm 6 and of the entire .dispositif de change of speed when the rear wheel is removed from the cycle or when the chain jumps accidentally at the crankset. In these cases, the chain is completely released and the spring 11 tends to make the assembly pivot rearward.
The stop 31 can also be constituted by an axis riveted to the support arm 6 at a suitable location, with a certain offset relative to the stud 28, this offset being established in order to limit the amplitude of the rearward movement of the arm. 6 given the profile of its fixed support.
