<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

Improvements in speed changes, in chain drives, of the so-called "derailleur" type for cycles and the like.
The present invention relates to improvements made to speed changes of the so-called “derailleur” type which are suitable in particular for cycles or other chain-driven devices.
According to a first improvement, the derailment fork, independent of the frame or chassis, is mounted at the end of a deformable parallelogram, so that the entire fork moves parallel to the axis of the rear wheel. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The chain tension roller is mounted at the end of an arm, articulated on an extension of the derailment fork and is subjected to the action of a tension spring acting preferably in torsion. This assembly, which moves with the fork, always ensures the correct winding of the chain on the roller and prevents it from jumping.
The movement of the fork is advantageously controlled by means of a cable, which is controlled in the middle by a lever, fixed for example on the handlebars or on the frame or chassis and whose two ends end in a lifter integral with the deformable parallelogram, so that the control is positive in both directions.
Other improvements relate to ', firstly the arrangement of a rest of the chain on the rear fork near the rear sprocket to allow removal of the wheel without touching the chain, secondly the arrangement of the rear hub. with special bearing cone to facilitate this disassembly and thirdly the production of the chain support rollers with bearing clearance compensation.
Finally, another improvement consists in that the periphery of the chain guide rollers comprises contiguous notches, in an arc of a circle, the angular spacing of which is equal to half the pitch of the chain and in which s' engage the chain rollers, which gives them a good footing.
These various improvements and others will be well understood by the description which will be given of them, or by the appended drawings, given by way of examples and in which:

Figures 22 and 23 show on a reduced scale how the chain rest disc can be mounted on other rear dropouts, also of the standard type.
Figure 24 relates to the assembly of the chain rest disc in the case of a normal hub.
The derailleur support 1 is fixed by a collar 2, or by any other means to the branch 3 of the rear fork of the cycle.
This support, suitably bent and folded, ends in front in a yoke 4 between the branches of which pivot on axes 5-5 and 6-6 the folded ends of the rods 7 and 8, double articulation giving a good base in at the same time as great smoothness at each pivot (fig. 2, 3 and 5).
The other ends of the connecting rods
7 and 8 are articulated at 9 and 10 to a fork ending in two curved legs 11 and 12, angled at right angles.
The whole of the clevis 4, the connecting rods
7, 8 and the fork constitutes a deformable parallelogram as seen in fig.3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The connecting rod 7 carries, on one side, a bezel 13 in which is screwed a cable clamp (seen separately in FIG.) Which receives one end of the control cable 15, as will be seen below.
On the other side, 'the rod 7 is extended by a small arm 14 suitably curved at its end to form a V in the bottom of which is drilled a hole for the passage of the other end of the cable, which is stopped by a solder drop 15a.
The telescope 13 and the arm 14 form a kind of rudder which is operated by the cable 15.
For this purpose the two strands of the cable each pass through a flexible guide tube 16 fixed to the frame of the machine (fig.l) while its middle part is wound up and fixed by a cable clamp 17 on the drum 18. controlled by a lever 19.
The outer leg 12 of the fork is extended downwards by an angled arm 20 forming a certain angle directed towards the rear.
The apex of the angle formed by the bent arm is pierced with a tapped hole to receive by screwing the axis 21 of a roller 22 on which the chain 23 passes out of the teeth of one of the pinions of the freewheel. 24, pinions which are five in number, in the example shown.
The axis of the roller 22 passing through the arm 20 receives a counter nut 25 at 25a neckline to form a cylindrical groove in which the tensioning lever 26 pivots, the free end of which carries a roller 27 located opposite the roller 22 and under which passes chain 25.
The end of the angled arm 20 carries a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
stud 28 on which a spring 29 is engaged (fig. 2 and 8). This spring fixed on the one hand to the pin 28, is articulated on the other hand on a compensating rod 30 which is journaled at 31 on a pin integral with the lever 26. Under the action of the spring, the lever 26 constantly tends. to lower in the direction of arrow f to keep the chain taut. The lever can thus reach the extreme position shown in phantom and which corresponds to the passage of the chain on the smallest pinion 24a of the freewheel 24.
The rollers such as 22, 27 through which the chain passes have a particularly simple and advantageous construction for mounting the ball bearing, as shown in the sectional part of Figure 5. Note in this figure that the rollers are formed by two flanges 22a, 22b crimped or welded to one another and machined at 22c on their internal face to form a cup or raceway for the balls 22d. The axis 21 of the roller, screwed into the arm 20 comprises a conical head 21a opposite which is an inverted cone 21b screwed on the axis 21. It can be seen that by bringing the cone 21b more or less to the cone 21a it the ball bearing is easy to adjust and if necessary take up the play.
So that the chain cannot leave the roller 27 during a derailment, it is provided with a guide bracket 32, one of the branches of which ends in a buttonhole 33, fig. 10, and the other, by a fork 34. The buttonhole 33 is hooked to a button 35 provided on the head of the axle 21, while the fork, engaged on the axle, is clamped between the cone. 21b and the arm or lever 26.
As stated above, the part

middle of the cable 15 is wound on a drum 18 provided with the lever * This lever is pierced with a hole 36 for the passage of the cable and the cable is tightened in this place by a pressure screw 37. The drum 18 is fixed by a screw 38 in the center of a graduated sector 39 which can be cut in an extension 39a of the half-collar which couples either to the half-collar 39b carrying the brake handle 39c to be fixed on the handlebars ( fig.6) or to an ordinary half-collar 39d fixed at any point of the frame (fig. 1 and 7).
The drum 18 has a small bowl 40 provided in its center to house a spring 41 which acts as a brake and at the same time allows the drum to be lifted slightly when, in order to immobilize the lever in its extreme position, it is desired. engage the lug 42 with which it is provided, in an eye 43 provided at the end of the sector 39.
The derailleur operates as follows:
The chain being for example on the smallest pinion 24a of the freewheel (fig. 2 and 3) the connecting rods 7 and 8 are parallel, as il.est shown in phantom; it is desired to decrease the speed by passing the chain to the pinion 24a over the pinion 24b, the lever 19 is angularly moved until the index 19a that it bears is opposite the corresponding graduation of the sector 39.
The drum 18 drives the cable 15, the ends of which are connected to the balance. This gives the connecting rods 7 and 8 an oblique position which places the fork opposite the pinion 24b and so on until the position shown in solid lines which corresponds to the lowest speed, the fork bringing the chain to the largest sprocket.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
All these movements of the fork take place parallel to the axis of the rear wheel, that is to say that the legs 11 and 12 are always normal to said axis.
According to another improvement, the branch 3 of the rear fork ends (on the side where the chain is located) with a fixing lug in the form of a disc or drum 45, provided about half of it with its circumference of a ring or rim 47 (fig. 2, 3 and 4) on which the chain can be engaged at the end of the gear change maneuver and which serves as a chain rest. You can then remove the wheel without touching the chain. This position is obtained by pushing the lever 19 to the end and by lifting it so as to engage its lug 42 in the eye 43 of the sector 39.
To facilitate removal of the rear wheel, the internal ring or bearing cone screwed forcibly on the axle 32a of the rear wheel is extended to 44a and is fixed, by screwing, to the threaded end of the screw. lever or butterfly 46; this screw is mounted in the drum or disc 45 and held for example by a part forming a bridge 45a (fig.2).
It can be seen that in the rest position of the chain, that is to say when the latter is on the flange 47 of the fixed disc 45, the chain is completely disengaged from the rear sprocket 24, 24a, 24b and under these conditions , if the screw 46 is unscrewed and if it is completely taken out of the cane 44, the cycle wheel can be removed without any hindrance and quickly, after having loosened the wing screw at the other end of the wheel axle.

According to a variant shown in fig.4a, the disc or drum 45 may carry in its center ltaxe dtun idler 50, mounted on a ball bearing 51, the pinion advantageously replacing the ring or cord 47 serving as a rest for the chain.
It was said above that the two strands of the cable 15 each passed through a flexible tube fixed to the frame. This arrangement is only used when the control is located on the handlebars, a position which requires long conduits marrying several sinuosities. It is not the same, when the handle is fixed to the frame as shown in fig.l. In this case the guide tube 16 terminating against the ordinary stop plate 16a, may be single, the two strands of the cable being able to slide easily inside, one against the other.
Finally, it is advantageous to cover the parts of the fork control parallelogram with a cover or casing 48 protecting them from projections of dust, mud and gravel.
It can be seen from FIG. 11 of the drawing that in the case of a roller 27 with a smooth periphery, the rollers 23a of the chain 23 are in contact with said roller 27 only by very small surfaces 64; the chain is thus badly guided and is not well supported.
According to the present invention the periphery of the chain guide roller 27 comprises (fig. 12 and 12a) notches in an arc of a circle 65, having a radius r equal to the radius of the rollers 23a of the chain, the angular difference p between the axes of these notches, that is to say the pitch of the notches being equal to half of the pitch P of the chain; under these conditions each notch 65 is formed by a quarter of a circle, and ensures good seating

to the rollers 23a of the chain 23.
What has just been said for the roller 27 is of course applicable to the roller designated at 22 in FIG.
According to an alternative embodiment, the chain rest is produced in the form of a removable shelf or tray, as shown in FIG. 13, 14 and 15, which can be fixed in any useful way on the rear leg and that whatever its conformation. This disc or plate 75 is provided on part of its periphery with the ring or rim 47, and is drilled in its center with a hole 75a allowing the free passage of the threaded axle 46 which secures the wheel.
The fixing of the plate 75 on the rear bracket such as that shown at 76 (fig. 20 and 21) takes place by means of a backing plate 77 and screws 78 bearing on the backing plate and screwing into holes threaded 79 and 80 provided in the plate 75.
The hole 80 is advantageously drilled in a boss 81, the height of which corresponds substantially to the thickness of the rear legs.
The arrangement of the holes 78 and 79 is chosen so as to allow the mounting of the chain rest on any of the different types of rear dropouts currently in the cycle industry, without the need for any modification. whatever the said legs have the lightening holes are used to allow the passage of screws 78.
These openings differing in shape, from one tab to the other, several holes 79 are provided (in practice two are sufficient).
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
In order to allow easier adjustment of the backing plate 77, the latter may include an elongated slot or buttonhole 82 corresponding to the location of the holes 79.
The boss 81 carried by the plate 75 is intended to form a stop against the edge of the rear leg, it is preferably engaged in the slot 83 provided on each rear leg so that a solid fixing of the assembly is thus obtained. . In the case of legs shaped as shown in fig. 20 and 23, it is advantageous to mount the plate 75 such that the threaded axis 46 serving for fixing the wheel can bear against the ramp 84. This stop ensures perfect immobilization of the wheel even in the case of '' a violent pulling force of the chain (for example if the cyclist starts suddenly).
In the case of rear legs of the type shown in fig. 22 and 23, it is possible to adjust the chain tension by moving the boss 81 in the slot 83.
The counter-plate 77 serving for fixing the plate 75 also serves as a support for the threaded axis 46. For this purpose it is suitably angled so as to present a second branch 86 also pierced with a hole in which can freely slide the extension 87 of the axis 46.
In order to avoid the loss of the axle 46, for example during the dismantling of the wheel, there is provided a locking washer or collar 88 disposed between the two branches 77 and 86 of the backing plate.
According to an advantageous embodiment,
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
that stop collar! is obtained by means of a washer engaged in a groove 87a provided on the pin 46. The mounting of this washer takes place as follows.
The washer 88 has a central hole 89 with a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the threaded part of the pin 46. This washer is also provided with a slot 90 (fig.19).
After having introduced the pin 46 into the hole provided in the branch 86, the washer 88 is engaged on this pin and it is brought opposite the groove 87a; The end of the axis 46 being at this moment engaged in the hole 75a provided for its passage in the branch 77, the washer is immobilized in the groove by exerting a pressure along a diameter perpendicular to the axis of the slot 90. It is deformed thus the washer, which brings together the two edges of the slot 90, as shown in fig. 18, the hole 89 is ovalized and its smallest dimension is equal to or slightly greater than the diameter at the bottom of the groove 87a.
The shaft 87 is completed with a view to facilitating its driving by a head 91 provided with one or more advantageously with two wings 92. According to a feature of the present invention, the securing of the head 91 and of the shaft 87 takes place as follows:
The axis 87 is provided with a groove 93 (fig. 17) and a series of longitudinal grooves 94.
The joining takes place by contraction after melting of the metal in the ridges 94 and in the groove 93.
In order to allow rapid maneuvering of the axis 46, one of the wings 92 is advantageously provided with a ball or a drive rod 95 so as to form a sort of crank driving the
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
seems, the blocking or unblocking taking place in the usual manner by action on the wings 92.
To facilitate assembly of the wheel and in particular to ensure easier centering, the plate 75 has on its wheel side a shoulder 96 in the shape of a horseshoe as shown in dotted lines in FIG. 13.
This shoulder serves as a stop for the cone 44 which is thus perfectly centered, so that the engagement of the threaded axle 46 is made very easy.
According to a variant, instead of being drilled in its center with a hole for the passage of the pin 46, the plate 75 may be provided with a slot 97 indicated in phantom in fig. 13 which then allows the use of normal hubs as shown in fig. 24.
It is obvious that the slot 97 is oriented along the axis of the groove or slide provided on the rear tab for the passage of the axis (this groove is indicated at 83 in fig.22).
The plate 75 is fixed using a back plate 98.
In this case, it is advantageous in order to ensure an energetic locking of the axis of the wheel that, on the one hand, the end of the rolling cone 44 of this axis and, on the other hand, the face of the wheel. the support of the wing nut are in direct contact with the corresponding faces of the rear bracket (fig. 24). It will be understood that for the sake of simplification and in particular to reduce the cost price, the plate 75 can be fixed directly on the corresponding rear tab by means of rivets, welding points, etc.
To remove the wheel, in this case you have to pull the chain so as to allow the
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
passage of butterflies or levers if, as usual, they are left on the axle of the wheel, or unscrew them completely.
The chain rest which has just been described can be used not only for the rear dropout but also at any other place where the declutching and meshing of the chain of a driving or receiving pinion takes place.
The present invention also relates to the application of a derailleur speed change of any type with chain rest at the control of machines of all kinds and more particularly of machine tools such as band saws. etc ... which makes it possible to produce the drive at different speeds and to disengage with great ease while retaining the advantages of the chain drive.
It goes without saying that detailed modifications could be made to the embodiments which have just been described by way of examples, without departing from the scope of the invention * In particular the part forming the rest of removable chain or integral with the rear fork dropout, can be used to hold any part of the bicycle and in particular a small arm at the end of which the gear change mechanism or derailleur is mounted. This arm could be integral with the chain rest or assembled on the latter.
