The present invention relates to a gear change device by derailment of the chain for cycles and similar vehicles.
This device is characterized in that it comprises a support lever forming a hollow casing, the upper part of which is able to have different angular positions with respect to an axis carried by a support bracket integral with the cycle, said lever -carrier being mounted on its axis in a manner allowing the adjustment of its transverse position on said axis, a control cable being fixed, by one end, to a sliding member which is housed in a sliding manner relative to the lever -carrier, a transmission means following on from the sliding member, being fixed on the one hand to said sliding member, and, on the other hand, after passing over a return means,
to a reciprocating axis slidably mounted in a scope which extends the lower part of the carrier lever in a manner substantially perpendicular to itself, said reciprocating axis carrying at least one guide roller transverse movement chain, a spring working in compression and in torsion being mounted compressed between the roller carrier hub on the one hand, and the carrier lever on the other hand, one end of said spring being fixed to the roller carrier, the other end being fixed in an angularly adjustable manner,
means being provided to limit the amplitude of the displacement of the sliding member and of the reciprocating axis, a plate fixed to the supporting lever covers the mechanism housed in said lever. We emphasize the interest of this device which is established in the form of an assembly offering a clean appearance stripped of the roughness formed by many projecting parts and exposed to shocks, as seen in gear change devices of known type. In the device which is the subject of the invention, the mechanisms are concealed and perfectly protected.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, several embodiments of the device forming the subject of the invention.

Fig. 18 is a partial side view which illustrates a second simplified embodiment for the articulation of the lever-carrier of the gear change on the bracket = support.
Fig. 19 is an axial sectional view of the simplified joint according to FIG. 18.
In the various embodiments shown, the device comprises a tab 1 which carries the gear change and which serves to fix it on the rear tab a of the cycle frame.
The tab 1 has an open slot 11 which corresponds to the slot of the tab a of the frame. The bottom of the slot 11 can serve as a constant positioning stop for the axis b of the wheel. The hub of the wheel carries in the usual way several c-d-e gears for example (dotted line in Figures 1 and 9), of different diameters, on which is wound the chain which transmits the dragging force.
The gear change device shown in FIGS. 1 to 8 comprises, in addition to the support lug 1, a support lever 2 pivotally mounted on the axis 3 carried by the lug 1 (fig. 1 and 2). An elastic spring means is interposed between the support bracket 1 and the lever-carrier 2 in order to exert on the lever 2 a permanent thrust to pivot on the axis 3, in the usual direction of clockwise.
The other end of lever 2 carries the reciprocating positive gear change device as shown in section in FIG. 11. The end of the axis moved back and forth carries two flanges 4 between which is guided the chain of the vehicle which winds on one of the c-d-e sprockets. Between the flanges 4 are mounted for free rotation of the rollers 5 serving as a rotary support for the chain f of the cycle (drawn in dotted lines, Figs. 2 and 10).
The lever-carrier 2 is made in a single-piece and hollowed-out manner, in molded or stamped metal, or according to any other known method, in order to receive and protect the transmission and reciprocating mechanism.
In the embodiment illustrated by FIGS. 1 to 8, the carrier lever 2 is mounted and fixed on the axis 3 with the possibility of adjusting the transverse position of said lever, in order to move and position the entire gear change with respect to the pinions vehicle wheel hub control.
To this end, the lever 2 has at the upper part a bearing surface 21 which is pivotally engaged on the axis 3 by means of a ring 6 (FIG. 3). Said ring 6 is mounted for free rotation on axis 3 and it cannot be displaced axially on said axis. The relative angular position of the lever 2 on the ring 6 is fixed by a keying 61 formed by the ring 6. The keying 61 fits into a corresponding groove of the lever 2. This latter is fixed in the transverse position after adjustment, in actuating a screw 7 with a conical end screwing in the lever 2, and which blocks a clamping plate 8 against the keying 61.
The elastic thrust device on the lever-carrier 2 is constituted by a spring 9 wound on an axis 12 of the lug 1. One end of the spring is fixed on the lug 1 by a screw 10. The other strand 91 of the spring comes to pivot either directly against the lever 2, or again, according to the example of the drawing, against a hook 81 which extends the plate 8, or against a fulcrum of the ring 6. In any case, the ring 6 and the lever 2 are pivotally driven.
In another embodiment illustrated by FIG. 8, the support bracket 1 has a stamped shape at 13 in which the spring 9 wound on a rod 11 is housed for the most part. The fixed end 92 of the spring is positioned by engagement in a hole in the boss 13.
The gear change control is effected by a cable 12 which is actuated moreover with a lever or any other known means which it is not useful to represent and describe.
The cable 12 ends in the recessed part of the lever 2 where it is fixed by screws or otherwise on a sliding member 13 (fig. 4 and 5). The organ 13 is slidably mounted in the recess of the lever 2. On the other hand, on the member 13 is also fixed in an articulated manner, the end of a chain 14 or other flexible member. transmission, up to the reciprocating axis carrying the flanges 4 and the rollers 5. This assembly, as well as the mounting of the reciprocating members and the flanges on the reciprocating axis -Comes, comply with the assembly and mounting described below with regard to FIG. 11.
The body-walker 13 has a projecting transverse lan 131 which is stopped on a bar 15 engaged in one of the notches 22 executed in the carrier lever 2, on either side of the recess (fig. 4) . By placing the bar 15 in one of the notches 22, the amplitude of the sliding of the organ 13 is adjusted, and consequently the amplitude of the displacement of the tensioning lever formed by the flanges 4 with the rollers 5, depending on whether '3 gears are used, or 4 gears, or 5 gears.
The mechanism thus mounted in the lever-carrier 2 is protected by a casing plate 16 which is fixed to said lever with a screw 17, or by forced elastic interlocking or in any other known manner. The whole thus has a clean appearance, and the organs are well protected.
In another embodiment of the positive device, illustrated by FIGS. 9 to 14, the tab 1 carries at the lower end a pivot 18 which has a split head 181 and which is locked on said tab between a collar formed by the pivot and a nut 19. A hollow cylindrical shaft 20 is mounted to rotate free around the pivot 18 on which said axis is held by the head 181 of the pivot. A coil spring 21 is housed between the pivot and the axle. One end of the spring 21 is engaged and positioned circu larly in a hole 182 in the split head 181 of the pivot, while the other end of the spring is engaged and positioned in a hole in the axle 20.
The lever-bearing 22 of the gear change remains established in a single piece of cast metal or according to any other known method. The upper part of the lever 22 is however shaped to constitute a collar 221 adaptable to the axis 20. After adjusting the transverse position of the lever 22, the tie collar 221 is blocked with a screw 23 screwing into the body of the lever 22. , and whose head 231 presses on the upper branch of the collar.
The head 231 of the screw 23 is recessed to form a stop for the sheath 121 of the cable 12. The cable 12 axially passes through the screw 23 which is drilled for this purpose, and it is located in the recessed part of the lever 22 to be fixed. by a screw 241 to the movable member 24 for connection with the chain 14. The section of FIG. 12 illustrates the recess of the lever 22 in which the established member 24 can be slidably moved, for example, as illustrated in FIG. 13.
The angled lower part of the lever 22 has a 222 range hollowed out and placed perpendicularly to the body of the lever. In the bore of the bearing surface 222 are slidably mounted a telescopic element 25 (example of the drawing, fia. 11), or several elements. The last central element of the telescopic assembly consists of the shaft 26, the outer end of which carries, by welding, screwing, riveting or other known means of fixing, the flanges 4 forming a chain guide.
The stamped shape 41 of the flange 4 closest to the lever 22 makes it possible, on the one hand, to reduce the transverse bulk of the gear change, and, on the other hand, this stamped cup makes it possible to center and accommodate the extremity. of a coil spring 27. The other end of the spring 27 is centered and housed in the circular bowl of a pulley 28 which is rotatably mounted on the bearing surface 222 of the lever, against the lever 22. The apparent terminal strand 271 of the spring is engaged radially in a notch of the pulley 28 of which it becomes integral in rotation, while the other end of the spring is housed and positioned in a hole drilled in the flanges 4 at the bottom of the stamped part 41 ( fig. 11).
The spring 27 has a dual function : on the one hand it is mounted in compression between the pouch 28 and the flanges 4 and it provides a return thrust which tends to move the flanges and rollers away from the lever 22, on the other hand, it is mounted with a certain circular torsion or tension, and it tends to drive the flanges and rollers to pivot in the direction of clockwise (arrow F, fig. 9). The circular tension of the spring 27 is kept constant on the chain by the play of the rotating pulley 28 which drives the end 271 of the spring.
The rotation of the pulley 28 depends on a cable 29 wound on said pulley, and the displacement of which is controlled directly by the user, according to the tension on the chain which he wishes to obtain, or else this rotation is controlled in synchronism. with the movements of the cable 12 which moves the reciprocating system with the flanges 4 and the rollers 5.
The axis 26 of the movable reciprocating telescopic device has a head in which is fixed in an integral manner in translation but independent in rotation, the end of the chain 14, the other end of which is connected and fixed d 'a hinged manner in a yoke 242 of the slide member 24. Any other flexible member can be used to connect the slide member 24 to the axis 26. A roller 30 mounted for free rotation in the recess of the lever 22 serves as a fulcrum and return point for the chain 14.
Depending on the number of sprockets carried by the wheel hub (3 cde sprockets, example of the drawing, 4 sprockets or 5 sprockets), the amplitude of the transverse displacement of the reciprocating device with the flanges 4 and the rollers 5 must vary while being limited in each case. For this, the -slider 24 has laterally in 24s a stepped part which is intended to abut against a stop which limits its sliding in the lever 22. This stop is formed by the head 311 of a rod thread 31 which passes through a slot 223 made in a side wall of the recess of the lever 22, and which also passes through a plate 32 which can slide on a side face of the lever 22.
The plate 32 is designed to hide the slot 223 regardless of the adjustment position. A nut 33 locks the rod 31 and the stop head 311 in the desired position. To facilitate this adjustment, the plate 32 may have an angled index 321 which moves opposite a graduation marked on a housing plate 34 adaptable to the front face of the lever 22 and fixed to the latter by crimping, forced adjustment. , or by a screw 35, or by these combined means. The mechanism housed in the lever 22 is thus perfectly protected.
The pivoting amplitude of the lever-carrier 22 is limited, in both directions, by the addition of a plate 36 in the form of a sector and integral with the axis 20. The plate 36 protrudes relative to the axis 20 to be in the plane of the lug 1 which is cut out in the form of a sector in order to give passage to the plate, the ends of this cut-out part serve as a stop for the plate 36 and the pivoting assembly (fig. . 14).
After this description, the operation and advantages of this gear change device will be seen. In particular, the mounting of the articulation of the lever 22 on the axis 20. The elastic thrust device on the lever 22 is entirely protected and concealed in this articulation, and the transverse adjustment of the assembly can be carried out rapidly. and in particular rollers 5 relative to one of the end pinions of the wheel hub. This adjustment is made easy and convenient by the construction in the form of a collar of the upper part of the carrier lever 22. The adjustment device 31-32 concerning the amplitude of displacement of the reciprocating telescopic device is also effective. and convenient, in a simple form.
The same is true of the device intended to limit the amplitude of the pivoting of the lever 22 and of the whole assembly.
Figs. 15 and 16 illustrate a simplified embodiment of the articulation of the carrier lever 22. This articulation comprises a pin 37 locked by a screw 38 with nut, on the support bracket 1 of the gearshift. The part in the form of a collar of the lever 22 remains locked as described above on the axis 37, with the possibility of transverse adjustment.
A plate 39 is also integral with the axis 37 and consequently with the lever 22, so as to limit, with respect to a clearance in the form of a circular sector executed in the tab 1, two main angular positions of the lever 22, c ' that is, a usual working position (fig. 15), and a rear pivoting position (fig. 17) which facilitates the assembly and disassembly of the wheel for repairs.
In this embodiment, the lever 22 is not mounted to pivot resiliently, during operation. It is fixed in a determined angular position. The mounting of a spring in the axis 37 is eliminated. The construction is simplified, more economical and lighter. The tension on the chain is then only provided by the spring 27 of the reciprocating device.
Another embodiment, even more simplified, of the articulation of the lever 22, is illustrated by FIGS. 18 and 19. An axis 40 with a polygonal section (hexagon for example), is fixed by welding, riveting, screwing or other means on the support bracket 1. The upper part forming the collar of the lever 22 is locked on this axis, after transverse adjustment. Of course, the opening of the collar of the lever is of a shape corresponding to the cross section of the axis 40. It is thus possible to give the lever 22 different well established angular positions.
It is possible to establish the axis integral with the support bracket 1, with grooves, notches or other notches executed along the generatrices of the axis, with a corresponding shape for the opening of the collar.
For all embodiments, it is specified that the support lug 1 can be eliminated and replaced by an extension welded to the lug a of the frame, or else directly formed by said lug of the frame.
