The present invention relates to a steering assembly of a motor vehicle.
Figure 1 schematically shows a known set of motor vehicle steering. This assembly comprises a steering column 91 at one end of which is secured a steering wheel 92.
The steering column 91 is rotatably mounted on a fixed structure 93 of the vehicle by means of bearings 94, for example of the ball type. The steering wheel 92 is formed of a ring 95 intended to be held by a driver and arranged around a central portion 96 of the steering wheel, commonly referred to as the central hub of the steering wheel. The central hub 96 of the flywheel 92 is arranged to remain stationary while the flywheel 92 is free to rotate with the steering column 91. The fixed central hub 96 comprises a central ring 97 in which is mounted to rotate the end of the steering column 91 by means of a bearing 98, for example of the ball type. The central hub 96 can receive functional means such as an airbag and manually operable controls, such as, for example, speed, radio, passage and speed selection controls. The immobilization of the central hub 96 is here carried out by a spring 99 bearing between, on the one hand, the structure 93 of the vehicle and, on the other hand, the central hub 96; the spring 99 being mounted coaxially with the steering column 91. The steering wheel 92 is integrally attached to the steering column 91 by means of a plate 910, said plate 910 of the flywheel 92 extending between two turns of the spring 99 The plate 910 thus slides between the turns of the spring during the rotation of the steering wheel 92. This spring 99 must have particular characteristics such that it must be very stiff in axial torsion and very flexible in axial compression. These features lead to a helical spring with flat turns where each turn has a rectangular section of a thickness in the direction of the axis of the turns much lower than its height in the direction perpendicular to this axis, in order to increase the ratio between the two stiffnesses. For example, the ratio between the thickness and the height of a turn can be between 1/5 and 1/20. Such a spring does not allow continuous manufacture unlike conventional coil springs and, therefore, is very difficult to achieve and is expensive. In addition, the passage of electrical son associated with the many control members of the central hub 96 is not practical in a steering assembly provided with such a spring 99. Finally, the presence of this particular spring makes the steering assembly bulky axially. It is an object of the present invention to overcome the above disadvantages of the known steering assembly of a vehicle. For this purpose, the invention proposes a steering assembly of a vehicle comprising a steering column rotatably mounted on a structural element of the vehicle, a steering wheel coupled in rotation with said column by coupling means, and a central hub rotatably mounted relative to said flywheel, characterized in that the means for coupling in rotation of the steering wheel and the column comprise: two coaxial parts, an outer part secured to the flywheel and rotatably mounted relative to the structure and the central hub, and an inner portion integral with rotation of the steering column; a helical spring housed in the outer part coaxially with the steering column and immobilized in translation between the structure and the central hub; and a coupling part in rotation of the outer and inner parts, said part being engaged with the turns of the spring disposed between the two parts of the coupling means, so that a rotation of the flywheel causes a rotation of the column of direction through the workpiece, said workpiece making a helical movement between the turns of the spring along it. Preferably, the coupling piece is a ring gear externally and internally meshing respectively with internal splines of the outer portion of the hub and outer splines of the inner portion of the hub. The ring comprises an arcuate groove coaxial with the axis of revolution of the ring and extending from one side to the other of the ring through its thickness in the manner of a helix in which is engaged a turn of the spring . The groove is broken down into three successive portions. a first portion formed on one face of the ring along a predetermined angle sector, the depth of which is increasing to one end so that the groove passes through the ring at this end; a second portion traversing the ring from one side to another in a predetermined angle sector, between the end of the first portion and the opposite end; and a third portion formed on the opposite face of the ring according to a predetermined angle sector, the depth of which is decreasing between the end of the second portion and the opposite end.
The bottoms of the first and third groove portions are inclined relative to the axis of revolution of the crown. The arcuate groove extends from one end to the other 5 through the ring and in a sector of about 2700. The inner part of the hub is constituted by a sleeve removably attached to the end of the steering column. The splines of the two hub portions extend for a length approximately equal to that of the spring. The splines of the two hub parts comprise a Teflon type anti-friction coating. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle, characterized in that it is equipped with a steering assembly as defined above. The invention will be better understood, and other objects, features, details and advantages thereof will become more clearly apparent from the following explanatory description with reference to the accompanying drawings given solely by way of example illustrating a Embodiment of the invention and in which: Figure 1 schematically shows a vehicle steering assembly according to the prior art; Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a steering assembly according to the invention; Figure 3 is a view along arrow III of Figure 2; - Figure 4 is a sectional view similar to that of Figure 2 and showing the steering wheel pointed at a maximum in a given direction; FIG. 5 is a sectional view similar to that of FIG. 4 and showing the steering wheel pointed at most in the opposite direction; - Figure 6 is a perspective view of a coupling part forming part of the steering assembly of the invention; and Figure 7 is a sectional view along broken line VII-VII of Figure 6. The steering assembly for a motor vehicle as shown in Figures 2 to 5 comprises a steering column 1 rotatably mounted on the frame or a structural member 2 of the vehicle by bearings not shown. A steering wheel 3, partially shown, is secured in rotation at the end of the steering column 1 as will be seen later. The steering wheel 3 comprises a central hub 15 5 rotatably mounted relative to said flywheel 3 so that said central hub remains fixed during the rotation of the steering wheel 3. A coil spring 4 is mounted coaxially with the longitudinal axis X , X 'of the steering column 1 at 20 being immobilized in translation and in rotation between the structure 2 of the vehicle and the central hub 5 of the steering wheel 3. This fixed central hub 5 can receive an airbag and various controls to be operated manually. Thus, the spring 4 has one of its extreme turns bearing against the structure 2 of the vehicle and its opposite extreme turn bearing against the central hub 5. The steering assembly comprises coupling means 6 in rotation of the steering wheel 3 and the steering column 1. These coupling means 6 comprise two concentric parts. - A cylindrical outer portion 7, forming a ring integral with the flywheel 3, rotatably mounted on the structure 2 and the central hub 5 by ball bearings 8, and - an inner portion 9, forming a sleeve integral in rotation with the steering column 1, fixed at the end of the steering column 1 coaxially with it. The bearings 8 are fixed on the structure 2 and the central hub 5 by crimping, but they can be mounted differently, for example by circlips. The outer portion 7 has internal grooves 10 extending parallel to the longitudinal axis XX 'of the steering column 1. The inner portion 9 has on its outer periphery splines 11 also extending parallel to the longitudinal axis XX 1 of the column 1. The splines 10, 11 of the parts 7, 9 of the coupling means 6 are located in line with the spring 4 and extend over a length approximately equal to that of the spring. The coupling means 6 further comprise a ring gear 12 ensuring the rotational coupling of the two external and internal portions 9 of said coupling means 6. This ring 12 has an external toothing and an internal toothing meshing respectively with the internal splines respectively. 10 of the outer part 7 and the outer splines 11 of the inner part 9 of the coupling means 6.
The ring 12 is engaged with the turns of the spring 4 which is arranged between the two parts 7, 9 of the coupling means 6. For this purpose, the ring 12 comprises an arcuate groove 13 coaxial with the axis of revolution of the crown 12 and extending from one side to the other of the ring 12 through its thickness in the manner of a helix in which is engaged a coil of the spring 4. As best shown in Figures 3, 6 and 7, the groove 13 is hollowed into a corresponding flank of the ring 12 more and more deeply from one of its ends 13a to completely pass through the thickness of the ring 12 and exit into the opposite side of the ring 12 while having a depth less and less important until reaching the other side of the crown 12 at its opposite end 13b. The groove 13 thus breaks down into three successive portions. a first portion 131 formed on a face 12a of the ring 12 along a predetermined angle sector, the depth of which is increasing between the first end 13a of the groove 13 to equal to the thickness of the ring 12, so that the groove 13 passes through the ring 12 at the end 13c of the first portion 131 opposite the first end 13a; a second portion 132 passing through the ring 12 from one side to another along a predetermined angle sector, between the end 13c of the first portion 131 and the opposite end 13d; and a third portion formed on the opposite face 12b of the ring 12 along a predetermined sector of angle, the depth of which is decreasing between the end 13d of the second portion 132 and the second end 13b of the groove 13. preferably, the arcuate groove 13 extends from one end 13a to the other 13b through the ring 12 25 in a sector of about 270; this angle is not limiting to implement the invention. In this way, the ring 12 is engaged in the spring 4 and can move along the spring in one direction or the other parallel to the axis XX 'following the turns of this spring; said spring 4 passing through the ring 2 at the second portion 132 of the groove 13. The bottoms of the first 131 and third 132 groove portions 13 are inclined relative to the direction XX 'so as to facilitate movement in one direction or in the other of the ring 12 along the spring 4.
The sleeve 9 of the coupling means 6 is fixed at the end of the steering column 1 by a fastening screw 14 enclosing an inner collar 9a of the sleeve 9 between the head of the screw 14 and the end of a bushing 15 integral with rotation of the tubular end la of the steering column 1 on the one hand and the sleeve 9 on the other hand. Advantageously, the bushing 15 is mounted in force inside a portion of the sleeve 9 or the sleeve 9 is overmolded around the bushing 15. In addition, the end 1a of the steering column 1 is mounted to the the sleeve 15 and cooperates in rotation with said sleeve 15 by means of splines formed in both the sleeve 15 and on this end la; said end may have a frustoconical portion to ensure the clearance between the column 1 and the sleeve 1a. In this way, if necessary, the sleeve 9 can be removed from the end of the steering column 1. The operation of the steering assembly 20 is already apparent from the foregoing description and will now be explained. When the steering wheel 3 is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow F in FIG. 2 from a middle position of the ring gear 12 relative to the spring 4, the steering column 1 is rotated in the corresponding direction by the intermediate of the outer and inner portions 7 and 9 of the ring 12 of the coupling means 6. During the rotation of the flywheel 3, the ring 12 makes a substantially helical movement, the rotation of the ring 12 resulting in a parallel concomitant translation to the axis XX 'imposed by the turns of the spring 4. In this way, during the rotation of the wheel 3 and thus the rotation of the ring 12, the ring 12 slides along the grooves 10 and 11. The displacement of the ring 12 along the spring 4 is performed to an axial position at the end of the spring shown in Figure 4 and corresponding to a maximum steering angle of the wheel 3. When the steering wheel 3 is rotated in the opposite direction In the direction of that of the arrow F, the steering column rotates in the same direction through the outer and inner portions 7 and 9 of the ring 12 which moves axially along the spring 4 in the opposite direction to that of FIG. 4 to arrive at an end position of this spring shown in Figure 5 and corresponding to a maximum steering angle of the flywheel opposite that of Figure 4. The ring 12 can move along the flutes 10, 11 with a minimum friction by making them by overmolding an anti-friction material, such as teflon, or by adapting them in the form of ball rails. With such coupling means 6 in rotation of the steering wheel and the steering column 1, the spring 4 is advantageously a helical spring of conventional design (unlike a helical spring with flat turns as described in the preamble), in which circulates electrical cables to connect the control members disposed within the central means to the rest of the vehicle.
In addition, the steering assembly of the invention, by using a crown constituting a central piece movable in translation along the fixed spring in the hub of the steering wheel, has the advantage over the known set of direction where it is authorized a translation of the spring, to require a lower implantation length L in the hub. Under these conditions, this arrangement results in a set of direction less bulky axially than the known steering assemblies.
