Typographic bars melting machine. The present invention relates to a machine for melting letterpress bars.
A preferred embodiment of the machine is intended to establish not only full length die lines, as is ordinarily the case, but also lines the actual length of which is less than the full length, the lines of the latter type, in machines of the kind in question, being composed only with the aid of the tools necessary for the printed text and either notched at their left or right end of the line, or centered, depending on whether it is longed for.
In a known machine, the movable supports of two clamping jaws, these jaws being made sufficiently long so that they can fulfill their role of closing the slot of a mold at the front, are actuated by the through two separate trains of transmission members from a vertically movable member, controlled from the main shaft of the machine.
When the jaw supports are both connected to said member, they are, before platemaking, moved towards each other by an equal distance until they are stopped by the contact of their respective jaws. with the opposite ends of the compound line, with a view to centering, and are then brought back, after elielrage, to their initial positions (the maximum separation. Known means are intended to remove the link existing between the vertically movable member and either the right jaw or the left jaw, so that one or the other of these jaws can be controlled independently to allow the shift either to the left or to the right.
When the jaws are both uncoupled, as they can be, the machine can operate in the usual way, the right jaw remaining normally fixed and the jaw jaw being adjustable by means of the devices. usual.
When the clamping jaws are brought into contact. of the compound line, a knee locking device, actuated by a member with play forming part of the control transmission, locks the movable member vertically in the position where it has been brought by its movement. down and, after a platemaking operation, the toggle locking device is. released, allowing. to the vertical movement organ: to move upwards and bring the clamping jaws to their maximum separation positions.
In this known machine, a clamping element has a limited degree of movement, while it is still in engagement with the vertically movable member, to allow the latter to receive upward movement over a short distance. to allow a slight recoil of the line clamp jaws before the line is lifted away from the jaws, the element. clamp being subsequently released from the movable organ vertically, after the line has been brought away from the jaws, so that it can receive an upward movement to its upper limit position and bring back the jaws at their maximum separation positions.
The closing of the pressure jaws c, in addition to the compound line, followed by a positive separation of said jaws, at a limited distance, allows the line to be widened by the free play of the spacing strides in sight (the la justification, the justification push being sufficient to widen the line by squeezing it strongly between the jaws.
However, it is not common practice to justify offset lines or provided with a blank at either end, whether or not these lines contain space bands, except in certain cases, for example for a so-called straight line indentation, when the jaws have received a backward movement from the contact position of the polishing line come to bear against fixed stops. If there is no justification, the thrust exerted by the jaws to close the line is not always high enough that the dies in the line are compressed to a sufficient degree to prevent the metal from gushing out as burrs or the production of lines held on the cliché bar.
For example, the line clamp jaws are supported fairly loosely so that, under the normal thrust for closing the line, these jaws are likely to come into contact with the end dies of the line in the swimming tilt position. denied and, in this case, they may not be in contact with said matrices over their entire height.
There then remains at one or each of the ends of the line, between the extreme matrices and the faces of the jaws while in contact with them, a gap through which metal can spring out when the injection of said metal s' carried out inside the mold for platemaking.
The second difficulty, that is, the production of lines dyed on the typographic bars, can be due to various causes, the main one of which is that, due to constant use of the dies, those - these are prone to warping or bending, another limitation being that in the case of thin pin dies, these dies may not be straight, even when new, and therefore lie are not terally in contact over their entire extent when they have been composed in lines, in which case it is necessary that they be strongly compressed to come into intimate contact.
If only one or two dies were so deformed, the thrust which causes the closure (the line would be able to compress the line sufficiently to straighten the dies, but if it is necessary to straighten so a half or a proportion even more of the total number of dies in the line to ensure a firm blockage, as is frequently the case, the closing thrust of the line may be much too low.
To remedy this state of affairs, it has been proposed to move the jaw to bring it to the line contact position for a shift, as usual, and then to exert an additional thrust, for example. the interimise of the control device of the controlled jaw, so as to urge the latter inwardly, from its lijne contact position, so as to. understand the. line with sufficient force to ensure straightening and.
full lateral contact of all the compound matrices it contains. Such a thrust capable of compressing the line also has the effect of re-erecting the jaws in such a way that the faces of said jaws which come into contact with the dies can collipletate in contact with the lateral faces of the end dies.
The present invention relates to a typographic bar melting machine comprising 1111. iné-uaiiisme for aligning the composed lines, a movable melting pot to and from a platemaking position, two line clamp jaws which are movable towards each other for offsetting operations,
a mechanism for effecting such an offset movement of the jaws and a locking device for maintaining the jaws in their line-facing position. It is characterized by means independent of said mechanism for effecting a movement of the jaws and capable of being put into action by the movement of the melting pot towards its platemaking position in order to engage said device (the locking after the lines compounds have been aligned.
The locking pawls can be arranged horizontally one above the other in the form of a vertical stack, while being free to move independently; these pawls may be movable as a block horizontally in a direction which brings them closer to or away from the moving bar vertically and be mounted so that they can flex or yield elastically with respect to each other as the one them engages with the bar.
Preferably, the locking pawls are mounted in a cage which is movable horizontally to and from the vertically movable bar and which. is provided with spring loaded plungers allowing the pawls to release by withdrawing relative to each other when one of them engages firmly with the bar to lock it.
A machine provided with a melting pot movable to and from the clinching position may be provided with means actuated by movement of the melting pot to the platemaking position, to engage the locking device of the plates. jaws; and a maehine equipped with a conveyor serving to transfer the compound line to, or from the lifting position, may be provided with means, actuated by the movement of the conveyor (the line away from the position of elichage, in order to disengage the locking device of the jaws The aforementioned means actuated by the melting pot can be put out of action during regular operation of the machine.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine which is the subject of the invention: FIG. 1 is a partial front view, some portions being partially broken away and others shown in section to better show certain construction details.

Fig. 7 is a section similar to fi-. 6, but representing the rusting worm members engaged with the bar in one of the positions thereof.
Fig. 8 is. soot view similar to FIG. 7, but showing the locking members engaged with the bar in a different position from this bar.
Fig. 9 is a section taken along line 9-9 of FIG. 6.
The machine shown in the appended drawing comprises dies 1 and extendable spacer strips 2 composed in line in a composter, in the usual manner, then transferred to a first 3 mobile elevator vertically, which then descends to the position. desired to place the line between a left jaw -1 and a right jaw 5 (fig. 1 and 2) and facing a slot mold 6, indicated by dotted lines (fig. 2).
The mold then advances from a rear position to come into contact. with the line and with the two jaws for the plate-making of the block line, the compound line being aligned and justified before the plate-making, in the same way as when the machine is operated under the usual conditions. The mouth of a melting pot (not shown) then advances, from a position at the rear, to come into contact with the rear face of the mold, and molten metal is then injected into the mold to plate the block line against the compound line.
Once the block line is due, the melting pot receives a backward movement away from the mold, and the latter in turn receives a backward movement away from the compound line, after which the mold is transferred from a horizontal platemaking position to a vertical ejection position by a 2270 degree rotation of a mold disc 7, the first elevator receiving meanwhile an elevating movement to transfer the line made up of matrix distributors and space bands- anent and finally come to rest in its initial or line-receiving position.
In view of the movement which it must perform towards and from the platemaking position, the melting pot is mounted on a pair of support arms 8, only one of which has been shown in the drawings, capable of pivoting by their lower end on a transverse bar 9 mounted in the fixed jaw frame 10.
The two jaws 1 and 5 are mounted to move in the jaw frame 10 in the usual way, these jaws being carried by support blocks capable of sliding in the guides of said frame. These jaws 4 and 5 receive movements which bring them closer to or away from one another from a part 11 controlled periodically, in the form of a vertically movable bar, the upper end of which is capable of be connected to the respective jaws by means of two small angled levers 12 and 13 occupying mutually opposite positions and pivoting at 14 and 15 on the frame 10, the longer arms of said angled levers being connected by short rods 16 and 17 to the support blocks of the respective jaws,
whereas the shorter arms of these levers are arranged key so as to be able to be coupled with the bar 11 or to be uncoupled therefrom. Thus, when the bar 11 receives a downward movement from its upper limit position, which is its normal rest position, it brings the two jaws the same distance towards each other, assuming these are due. jaws are both connected to the bar.
until said jaws come into contact with the opposite ends of the compound line which has previously been placed in position between them; and when the bar receives an upward movement with a view to its return to its rest position, it performs in a similar manner the movement of the jaws to bring them back to their initial positions, where their separation is maximum.
As the compound lines which are placed between the jaws may vary (lengthwise, it is evident that the actual range of motion over the bar II will vary to a corresponding extent, and the means by which such motion will therefore vary from the bar in its control links are provided in the usual way.
A segment-shaped groove member 18 is fixed to the upper end (the bar 11 to connect the jaws to said bar, this grooved member being adjustable using a lever 19, by means of 'a rack and pinion gear 20, so as to selectively effect the coupling of any one or each of the jaws with the bar, as the case may be, with a view to forming a blank at one or the other end of the line or for centering.
Moon second lever 21, pivoting in 2? and mechanically connected to a (coupling pin \? 3 associated with the grooved member 18, allows key to disengage the bar 11. of the two control levers of the nii ^ hereioii-es for regular operation (the the iiiachine. We see. as well as, by the iterméd:
key area their connections (the control, the two levers constitute components making it possible to condition the machine with a view to an offset or said regular operation of the machine, as the case may be.
The bar 11 is capable of sliding in the upper and lower bearings of the file frame 10 and is actuated by means of a train of transmission members, designated by 26, from a cam, not shown, wedged on the main shaft of the machine and acting through its periphery. This cam, which makes a complete revolution at each working cycle of the machine, acts so as to first move the bar 11 downwards to effect the closing movement of the jaws, then upwards, to effect the separation movement of said jaws.
The justification of the compound line is effected in the usual manner by a two-step push exerted from the bottom in baht by a bar 27 on the lower ends of the longer, or downward, sections of the spacer bands. , dewlap to force said sections to rise between the dies and to widen the line between the jaws. The bar 27 is located at the upper end of two vertical bars 28 and 29 spaced apart and capable of sliding in the upper and lower bearings of the frame.
Between these pads, the bars 28 and 29 are provided with collars 30 and 31, respectively, and the ends of two justifying levers, of which only Vint, 32, has been shown, engage with said collars by the lower part to lift the bars successively during the justification. When space bands are present in the compound line, they limit the degree of elevation of the justification bar, but if the line is, composed without space bands, this bar can freely perform a full stroke, including the upper limit is determined by the stop of the upper ends of the collars 30 and 31 against the upper bearings of the respective bars 28 and 29.
A locking device is intended to hold the bar 11 in its lower position during a blank forming or centering operation. This locking device comprises a series of retaining pawls 40, four of these pawls have been shown by way of example (fig. 6 to 8), arranged horizontally one above the other. following a vertical stack and enclosed within a cage 11.
Each of these pawls has at its rear end a series of equidistant rack teeth which are intended to engage with rack teeth 42, similar to the teeth of the pawls, which are arranged opposite and which are cut directly from the pawl. bar 11. Teeth -1 \? extend practically over the entire length of the bar 11 or, in all cases, over a distance equal to the amplitude in third of the movement communicated to this bar for the purpose of forming a blank or centering.
The center-to-center distance of the teeth, both bar 11 and pawls, is 2.12 mm, which enables the teeth to be of sufficiently strong construction to resist shear under high compressive force. which is exerted on the line through the bar. This wide spacing of the teeth is made possible by the fact. that the teeth of the pawls are offset from one pawl to the next, this offset being of the order of 0.53 mm, which ensures perfect engagement of the teeth of at least one of the pawls with the teeth of the bar for any position of the latter between the limits of this small dimension.
This is clear from the fib. 7 and 8, which represent. the first pawl respectively. and the third pawl, counted to. from the top, completely. engaged with the bar in two slightly different positions of this bar.
As can be seen from the drawings, the rack teeth, both of the bar and of the pawls, are twisted to facilitate the mutual engagement of the gears, this bevelling acting, so as to force the pawl to drop down. block, to the extent permitted by the assembly which will be described later, to ensure perfect engagement of the teeth in any position of the bar.
The cage 41 has a lower wall 41a supporting the pawls, a front wall 41b which has rows of holes intended to receive the projecting ends of pous evenings 41c which are subjected to the action of springs and constantly exert pressure towards the rear on the pawls, side walls 41d (fig. 9) which guide the opposite edges of the ratchets in the forward and backward movement, and two rear edges 41e which abut against shoulders formed at the rear end pawls and li thus put the movement of the latter backwards under the influence of the spring pushers. normally, or when the locking mechanism is out of action, the cage 41 is held at the front (fig.
6) with all the pawls in alignment and clipping the teeth of said pawls disengaged from those of the bar 11. However, when the locking mechanism is actuated, the cage 41 sees a rearward thrust suitable for engaging the l '. one or the other of the pawls with the bar 11, the particular pawl which engages with said bar being the one whose teeth are exactly located with respect to the hollows of the teeth of the bar (fig. 7 and 8).
The cage 11 is mounted so as to be able to perform such rearward and forward movements in a housing 13 which contains the upper bushing 25 of the bar 11. At its front end, the housing 13 is provided with a fixed nut 14 into which is capable of screwing a rotating screw 15 of short length which carries at its rear end a portion in the form of a grooved rod constituting a rotary joint with a plate 16 secured to the cage 41 (fig. 6 to 9 ).
When the screw 45 receives a rotation in one of the directions, the cage 41 is forced to move backwards to engage the pawls in the teeth of the bar 11, while when the screw is actuated in the opposite direction, the wedge is pulled forward, so as to release the bar pawls.
The locking mechanism is actuated by another independent mechanism which comprises two groups of transmission members, one of which, actuated by the melting pot when the latter is brought by pivoting to the platemaking position, performs the The locking action before the platemaking, and the other of which, actuated by the first elevator in the upward movement which it performs from the platemaking position, unlocks once the platemaking is complete. We will first refer to the transmission actuated by the melting pot.
On the front end of the screw 45 is pivotally mounted a double lever 50, one of the arms of which is connected by a vertical bent rod 51 to the free end of a bent arm 52 extending forwards at from one end of a transverse oscillating shaft of short length 53, journaling in a fitting the support 54 fixed to the frame 10. From the opposite end of the oscillating shaft 53 extends downward an angled arm right 55 on the free end of which protrudes laterally a plate 56 held in contact with a roller 7 rotatably mounted in the lower end of an arm 58 pivotally suspended at 58a from a locking lever 104 of the justification bar.
When the machine has been conditioned for a blank forming or centering operation, as shown by solid lines in the drawings, the arm 58 is placed in front of a pusher 59 mounted in a support 60. secured at 61, to one of the fusing pot support lugs 8, the arm 58 being thereby subjected to the action of the pusher 59 under the pressure of an res out.
Consequently, when the melting pot receives a forward pivoting movement which brings it to the platemaking position, the pusher 59 causes the parts to move from the position marked in solid lines <: the position marked in dotted lines (fi <,. 31, which has the effect of raising the link. "11, of turning the lever 50 in the dextroi-sum direction (while looking at. La.
fi-7. 4) and then follow a similar rotation to the -15 screw,
the latter then actuating in its turn the locking pawls to make them @@ Trtier # engage with the bar 17. with vertical movement. A long tension spring 62 acting on either side of a neutral position is used to hold the parts in one or the other of the two positions.
This spring is engaged by its upper end to a pin 63 projecting laterally on a support bracket 54, while its lower end is secured to a pin G4 projecting laterally on the free end of an arm 65 ( Fig. 1) carried by the oscillating arm 53, in a position situated behind the arm 52 and extending downwards from this shaft. When the parts occupy their normal position, represented by solid lines (fig. 3), the spring 62 is placed behind the axis of the oscillating shaft, but when the parts occupy their working position, shown by the dotted lines, the spring is located in front of this axis.
It is therefore sufficient to give the movement of the pusher 59 actuated by the melting pot a sufficient amplitude to move the spring 62 from one side of the neutral point to the other, this spring then having sufficient force to complete the movement of the parts. . In this regard, it will be noted that a stop pin 66 carried by the fixed housing 43 (fig. 4) limits the rotational movement of the lever 50 in one direction, while a stop slat 51a carried by the rod 51 and intended to bear on the upper surface of the housing (Fig. 3) limits the rotational movement of said lever in the opposite direction.
Reference will now be made to the transmission train actuated by the first elevator. On the lever 50 for controlling the screw 45 projects forward, cantilevered with respect to said lever, a for mant carne plate 70 (fig. 3 and 4) formed at the upper end of the arm opposite to the lever. the one to which the connecting rod 51 is fixed. To cooperate with the cam 70, the first elevator is provided with a small oscillating lever 71 which is pivotally mounted on the elevator 72 and normally maintained in a horizontal position by a spring 73 and a locking screw 74.
At the rear, the lever 71 is provided with a vertical finger 75 directed upwards and bevelled at its end, this finger being intended to come into contact with the cam 70 when the lever 50 occupies the position indicated in dotted lines at the bottom. fig. 4, that is to say the position to which this lever is brought by the transmission action born by the melting pot to couple the locking pawls 40 with the bar 11, before platemaking.
Once the plate-making is complete, when the first elevator receives an upward movement to raise the combined league away from the position it occupied between the jaws, for distribution, the finger 75, actuated by the cam 70, oscillates the screw control lever 50 and returns it to its initial position, thus pro- viding the release of the locking pawls of the bar 11 with vertical movement.
This reverse rotation of the lever 50 a operating the pawl control screw is synchronized so that it takes place before the compound line has been completely disengaged from the line clamp jaws, the aim of this provision being to delay the release of the pawls from the bar until. that this bar has had the possibility of performing, as will be described later, a slight upward movement to reduce the thrust exerted by the jaws on the compound line. Note that although the pivot mounting of lever 71 may not be absolutely. necessary, it is intended to allow the lever to swing out.
the deviation of the cam 70 during the downward movement of the first elevator in the event that, at this moment, said plate is in the path of the finger 75.
The locking pawls 40 are mounted in the housing 43 so that they can perform not only a backward and forward movement, as previously described, but also an up-and-down movement. limited compared to said box, the. grooved shank portion of the screw 45 being established so as to allow such up-and-down movements without ceasing to be connected by a pivoting joint to the cage 41.
Normally, this cage is maintained in its upper position inside the housing 43 by a hollow pusher 80 which is housed in a recess in the lower wall of said housing and constantly urged upwards by a spring 81 housed inside the housing. pusher (fig. 6 to 8). To facilitate adjustments or repairs, the pusher 80 is provided with an operating handle 82 directed downwardly through an opening in the bottom wall of the housing.
The downward movement of the locking pawls takes place afterwards (the said pawls have entered into engagement with the bar 11 with vertical movement, and this movement is, therefore, communicated to said bar, so as to push back the clamping jaws. - lines inward, from their line contact positions, to compress the line before the lifting. The mechanism used for this purpose comprises a slide 90 (flg. 4) capable of moving in the direction of front to back and vice versa and connected by a joint 91 (fig. 3) with a pin and slot to the housing 43, on one side thereof.
The rear end of the slide 90 has the form of a hook intended to cooperate with a hooked plate 92 carried by a rod 93 which is subjected to the action of a spring and controlled by a cam not shown by a main camshaft of the machine. At its front end, the slider 90 is bent so as to form a lip 94 which is intended to come into contact with the front portion of a cam arm 95 pivotally suspended from the free end of a lever 96. , itself pivotally mounted at 97 on the casing 43, on the side of said casing opposite to that where the slide 90 is located. The lever 96 is placed above the casing 43 and comprises a projection which passes through the wall upper housing and comes to rest on the highest pawl 40.
The arm 95 is intended to cooperate with a cam roller 98 mounted on a spindle axis located between the housing and a retaining flange 99 preventing lateral movement of the arm 95. In accordance with this arrangement, when the slide 90 receives the connecting rod 93, actuated by a powerful spring, a backward movement, the lip 94 comes into contact with the cam arm 95 and is oscillating this arm which, by the effect of its cooperation with the roller 98, pulls the lever 96 downwards, so as to exert the full thrust, directed from top to bottom, of the control transmission on the key locking pawls 40 and, in their intermediate position, on the bar 11.
After the platemaking, and when the control link 93 has been returned to its initial position under the control of the cam, a spring 100 (fig. 4) acts so as to pull the slide 90 forward, allowing the arm 95 to return by a reverse oscillation to its initial position when the lever 96 is lifted by the locking ratchets 40 under the thrust of the spring plunger 80 upwards. It is this upward movement of the locking pawls which decreases the thrust exerted on the dropped line while said pawls are still engaged with the bar 71 before the first elevator lifts the line out of the way. from the position it occupies between the jaws.
When the compound line is subjected to an offset or centering operation, the justifying mechanism is put out of action, which is obtained by blocking the justifying bar 27 against any upward thrust. Two locking elements 101 and 102 (fig. 1), the role of which is to prevent both the first and the second justification, a key locking element being intended to regulate the moment, of each of the justification bars in due to the fact that the bar 28 is operated independently for the first justification.
In their working positions, the locking elements 101 and 102 are intended for. be placed the first above the upper end called collar 30 (the justification bar 28 and the second above a block 103 carried by the justification bar 29. As shown, the locking element 101- is made up at the end of the most ion <arm, of an angled lever 10-1 capable of pivoting at speed 10:
5 on the frame 10, while the element (the veri-ouilla - e 102 is constituted at the free end of a long lever 106 capable of pivoting in 107 7 on the frame 10 The two levers are interconnected by a link 108 to effect their movements in synchronism towards and away from their working positions The shorter arm 109 of the elbow lever 104 is connected by a vertical link 110 to a smaller angled lever 111, itself connected by a link 112 (fig. 1 and 2) to the lever 21 mentioned above.
When the lever 21 is operated to couple the bar 11 in vertical movement with the control levers 12 and 13 of the clamping jaws, with a view to an offset or a centering, the levers 104 and 106 receive an oscillating movement to bring the locking elements 101 and 102 to their working positions, as shown by solid lines in the drawings, while, when the handle is operated so as to remove the coupling between the bar 11 and the control levers of the line clamps for regular operation (the machine, the levers oscillate so as to bring the locking elements to their inactivity position,
indicated in part by the dotted lines in Figs. 4 and 5, it will be observed that the justification bar 27 may make a slight upward movement before the operation of the locking elements 101 and 102 is effective, this being desirable when bands of space eemient. are interspersed in the line, due to the fact that the bar lifts the long sections forming the corners of said strips to a small extent, but sufficient to be.
sure that their upper ends will rise above the guiding notches of the dies and will eliminate at this point any risk of possible leakage of molten metal during platemaking.
In a variant, the locking worm mechanism of the vertically movable bar 11 could be put out of action during regular operation of the machine, in order to avoid subjecting the key rack teeth to the bar and ratchets. locking to excessive wear. This is achieved by the aforementioned pivot mounting of the roller arm 58, part of the pre-melter-controlled transmission for the locking pawls, on the longer arm of the angled lever 104 carrying the latch. 'locking element 101 relating to the. justification bar 28.
Due to this mounting of the arm 58, it will be brought into engagement with the spring plunger 59 carried by the support arm of the melting pot, or uncoupled from this pusher, depending on the condition of the machine. In other words, when the machine is conditioned for offset or centering, as indicated by the solid lines in the drawings, the roller arm 58 is located directly in front of the pusher 59 and transmits the movement. oscillation of the melting pot to the locking pawls 40, so as to couple them with the bar 11 with vertical movement.
On the contrary, when the machine is conditioned for regular operation, the roller arm 58 is moved to the left away from the position where it is in contact with the pusher 59, see the dotted lines in Figs. 4 and 5, so that it does not transmit the oscillating movement of the melting pot to the locking pawls, which therefore remain at rest and free from the toothed bar. In this regard, it should be noted that, during the movements of the displacement of the arm 58, the roller 57 carried by this arm slides along the plate 56, which thus maintains the arm in a suitable position at all times.
