Ainsi établi, le mécanisme de saisisse ment, par suite de l'oscillation de l'arbre 165 qui l'amène dans le prolongement de l'axe du dispositif d'alimentation 160 (fig. 14 et 3,6), peut alors glisser vers le bas, l'axe de la pièce de support et l'axe de la position d'entraînement coïncidant, jusqu'à ce que le bout des doigts 1,86 vienne se placer sur la tête d'un rivet, dans la position 160, du fait que les parois obliques 182 de l'ex trémité de la, trémie 147, ont glissé sur et sous la tête du rivet en position; ils peuvent alors remonter verticalement, leurs axes coïncidant toujours jusqu'en un point où la pièce de support et les doigts, lorsqu'ils ont effectué leur mouvement. d'oscillation, at teindraient la. jante de la roue en travail;
Au moment où un trou percé atteint cette position, sous la commande du mécanisme d'avancement 1, le mouvement suivant du mécanisme d'entraînement F, détermine la pose -lu rivet qu'il a. retenu jusqu'ici, dans le trou percé et, lors du retrait du mécanisme, celui-ci l'abandonne, car le trou percé se trouve, à présent, dans la position d'intro duction;

Figs. 37 and 38 are details of some parts of the adjustment mechanism. In Figs. 1 to 5, the different mechanisms have: been designated by group letters.
The locking mechanism used to mount the discs <of the wheels has been signed by C, the whole of the advancement and stop mechanism which stops the disc in the successive riveting positions has been designated by I, the drilling mechanism which drills the holes in the disc by P, the riveting mechanism by R, the rivet feed mechanism by F, the wheel displacement mechanism by S, and the setting mechanism by T. These same reference signs have been used on all the detail figures, so that it will be easier to identify them with the overviews.
All these mechanisms are mounted on or near a common base B which takes the form of a base made of cast iron, having an upper face, substantially flat. This plinth B is supported on the floor or on the foundation by four feet L, a. a height sufficient for the worker to be able as easily as possible to manipulate the wheels which he must put in place on the locking device C and remove them. This placement of the wheel on the blocking device C and the blocking, and, to. the. the end of the machining operation performed on the wheel and the removal of the latter are the only operations that the operator must perform.
The blocking mechanism C is centered around the transverse rotary shaft 10 connected to the stop mechanism B. This shaft is supported by the frame 11, H-shaped, of the displacement mechanism. <B> 8 </B>, this frame having a transversely H-shape, said displacement mechanism being able to oscillate around the transverse shaft 12 mounted on the flat upper face of the base B by the intermediary of bearings 1 <B> 3 </B>, 13 (fig. 6, 7 and 13). The mechanism -de bloca @ m, C is represented more fully in figs. 7 and 3.2 to 35.
Collars removably secured to the shaft 12 make it possible to vary the position of the mechanisms C and I in order to make it possible to machine wheels of different dimensions. As is clear here, the front end of the shaft 10 is seen from a collar 14. The main blocking head 17 of the mechanism is secured to this collar by means of two locking discs. da.ptation 1.5 and 16. The clamping head and the discs 15 and 16 are bolted together in the collar 14 of the shaft 10, appropriate shoulders being provided to correspond to the recesses formed between them.
The head 17 is shown in detail in FIG. 7. It has a front face 18, with a shoulder in the form of a projection projecting forward which receives and centers the wheel by entering the central opening of the disc. A disc type wheel section is shown in combination with the clamping head. This type of wheel as it is currently on the market comprises a pressed steel disc, having an annular boss 20 which receives the nuts, and spaced apart support areas 21 and 22. , which are respectively worn and tight on the. radial face of a hub rim by bolts which pass through the boss 20.
The periphery of the radial part of the face 18 of the locking head 17 is such that it comes into contact with the internal face of the disc in zone 19, slightly outside of zone 22, so that the radial face of the clamping head cannot come into contact with the disc in any of the hub clamping zones 21 and 22 and in particular in the zone 21.
The engagement of the zone 19 with the locking head 17 is effected by means of wedges 23 which have inclined contact edges 24 with the aim of preventing the wheel from slipping. The wedges are circular in shape and fixed by screws 25 to the. my china. They constitute, in reality, the three bearing points for the disc of the wheel to be locked in position. The boss 26 of the head 17 has three grooves 27 centered on lines constituting the ropes of the boss and having substantially the arrangement of an equilateral triangle (FIG. 32).
In each groove slides a locking finger 28 having a point 29 (fig. 34) intended to fit on the outer surface of the bos sage 20 of the disc of the wheel to hold the latter in position. These sliding fingers 28 fit freely against the side walls of the groove, but are kept with some play away from the. bottom wall of this groove as a result of the recess 30 formed on the internal face of the finger between the contact tip 29 and an internal point 31 which moves on the bottom of the slide (FIG. 34).
Each finger, moreover, is provided, on its posterior face, with an ankle 32 which engages in a groove 33, fig. 33, a coordinated locking disc 34 attached to the outer end of a # 3 operating rod extending into bore 36 of shaft 10 towards the rear of the machine. The locking disc 34 is secured to the shaft by the intermediary of a sleeve 37 which can take a free movement limited in the direction of the axis of the shaft and which is connected to the latter by a pin 38 passing through the shaft and a helical groove 39 formed in the sleeve.
This groove (fig. 7 and 35) has straight ends, the posterior end being open. The pin 38 passes through the. rod 35 through the groove 39 and enters straight grooves formed in the head 17. The disc 3.1, not only fits against the shoulder 40 of this sleeve, but is keyed there by a key 41 and is retained in the position of keying by a nut 42. The sleeve, in turn, is retained on the shaft, at its anterior end, by a washer 43 pressed against the end of the sleeve and against the nut 42 by nuts 44. The chon sleeve 3 7 can slide in the locking head 17.
A spring 4.6 bears against a washer at its rear end and, at its other end, against the head of the collar 14 of the shaft 10, this spring normally biasing the sleeve 37 and the disc 34 outwards. . A compressed air cylinder 17 is connected to. the opposite end of shaft 35 and is arranged to be actuated to move shaft 35 inward.
The disc 34 is -of smaller diameter than the central opening of the <B>, </B> wheel. Therefore, a wheel can be slid freely on it over the boss 26 so as to engage it with the centering blocks 24 of the head 17. When the disc 34 is removed, as shown, the points 29 of the locking fingers 28 are located inside the circle of the boss 26 ,. as seen in fig. 7, so that they can not bring any discomfort.
On the other hand, when the shaft 35 is moved rearward, by the air intake into the cylinder 47, the sleeve 37 is driven as a result of the progression of the pin 38 in the helical groove 39 of the sleeve, rotating in turn the locking disc 34 and, thanks to the fact that the grooves 33 of the disc 35 embrace the pins 32, moving the fingers 28 outward to bring their contact tips 29 on the top the boss 20 in the desired positions to block the boss on the head 17. When the pressure in the cylinder 47 reaches its maximum, another.
movement of the shaft 35 engages the inner face of the disc 34 with the posterior portions of the fingers 28 and firmly grips the tips 29 of the fingers on the boss and, through the latter, locks the body of the disc on the centering wedges 24 of the locking head 17. Thus held, the disc cannot slide and it is centered and is retained in position precisely. As the air pressure ceases in cylinder 47, coil spring 46 pushes sleeve 37 and shaft 35 outward by moving sleeve 37 and disc 34 in reverse direction, causing first the general pressure of the disc 34 on the boss 20 and then releasing the tips 29 of the fingers 98 from the face of the bossa.ç -): e 20.
The wheel can then be immediately removed and one more put in its place. By a judicious choice of the adaptation discs 15 and 16 and by giving an appropriate shape to the head of the block 17, and perhaps to the tips 29 of the fingers, one could also block in position a wheel of all dimensions and of all conformations required to work on this machine.
The compressed air cylinder 47 shown. in fig. 7, which actuates the rod 35, is. supported by it concentrically at the rear end 48 of the shaft 10. This support is produced by means of an adapter part 50 screwed directly into the end of the shaft 10 and penetrating into the bottom 51 of the shaft. cylinder. This adapter piece may or may not consist of an element of the cylinder stuffing box. The rod 35 is connected directly to the rod 52 of the piston 53 of this cylinder. The assembly of such a compressed air cylinder is of a known type, used for example in pneumatically controlled clutches of different types of machine tools, such as wood lathes.
The means by which the cylinder is controlled come in combination with the general control and adjustment means of the machine and will be described below.
The advancing and stopping mechanism 1, by which the wheel thus locked in position is caused to move from one position to the next, comprises the shaft 10 around which the locking mechanism is centered, as well as the mechanism train which is combined with the posterior end of this shaft. The shaft 10 is carried in the frame 11 by two net cushions 54 and 55, the first of which rests against the anterior collar 14, while the other rests against a posterior collar 56 of the same shaft. The advancement disc 5 7 is secured to this rear collar 56. This disc has on its periphery a number of notches 58 (see FIG. 12) corresponding in number and position to the number and position of the rivets that l 'we want to insert into the wheel.
The disc is removably bolted to the collar 56, so that it can be replaced by discs comprising a different number of notches and a different distribution of these notches to correspond to manufacturing wheels and cl: @ different dimensions. The whole of the mechanism of which the locating disc is part is shown more particularly in the fi ns. 12 and 13. A pendant arm 60 can oscillate freely on the projecting end 59 of the shaft 10, on the rear face of the disc, and carries, at its lower end, near the periphery of the disc 57, a pawl 61 in the form of an angled lever which is mounted to. pi vote on him.
One of the arms of this pawl extends laterally, from the arm 60, sensibly along the edge of the disc 57 and is bent at its end, the latter having oblique faces which correspond to the oblique faces of the notches. 58 of said 57. This arm is biased towards the inside of the notches 58 by a coil spring 62 hooked onto the body of the arm 60 itself. The bottoms of the notches are flat, as is the end of the pawl 61, but this end does not reach the bottom of the notch. Thus, thanks to the fact that this wedge end is reduced, or to the fact that its width is sufficiently considerable to prevent it from reaching the bottom of the notch, perfect alignment of the disc in a given position of stop by engaging the pawl in the notch.
In addition, the flat inner end of the pawl can rise freely over the flat outer edge of disk 57 between two consecutive notches as it progresses from one notch to the other.
The outer arm of the pawl 61 hangs beyond the arm 60 and is connected by an adjustable rod 63 to an oscillating arm 64 on the projecting outer end of the shaft 12- of the mechanism (the displacement S. This arm 64 oscillates under the action of a second rod 65 connected to a slide 66 mounted in vertical supports 67 on the control shaft 68. This slide 68 is driven by a reciprocating movement using a cam 69 of constant axial width or height This cam is in constant contact on its opposite faces with pins 70 spaced apart from each other by a distance equal to the width of the cam.
A groove 71, of a length equal to the stroke of the cam increased by the diameter of the shaft 68 allows free movement of the slide 66 around the shaft which passes through it. When it is thus animated with a reciprocating movement, the slide 66, by means of the mechanism 65, 64, 63, 61, will advance the disc 57 one notch at a time, to provided that the stroke is suitably adjusted by a judicious choice of the size of the cam 69 and of the articulation of the rods 63 and 65 with the arm 64.
Two pawls 72 and 73 coordinated with the pawl 61 are mounted on the rear face of the frame 11, which has a large surface, as clearly shown in FIG. 12. The pawl 73 is simply a stopper pawl which does not hold the disc 57 so as to lock it against the drive of the pawl 61, but opposes this dragging to some extent, so that when the flat end of the pawl 61, during its return movement, is pulled against the. periphery of the disc 57 by the spring 62, the friction engagement cannot cause the disc to return back.
To this end, the pawl 73 has the shape of a ga let mounted on a pin 74 at the upper end of a sliding rod 75 of rectangular section, carried by a support plate 76 bolted to the frame 11. , a coil spring 77 pressing the rod 75 with the roller 73 against the edge of the disc. The edges of the notches 58 are slightly chamfered in order to present a better surface of the thrust to the circular face of the pawl 73.
The other additional pawl 72 has a projecting end like the pawl 61, having the shape of the notches 58, but unable to reach the bottom of the latter, so that the same precise alignment is indeed obtained. This pawl is carried by an ankle 78 mounted in a support plate. 79 and pushed towards the disc by a coil spring 80. But, independently of this push, the pawl is actuated mechanically. A groove 81 is formed in the rear face of the support plate and a pin 82 protrudes through this groove from the rear face of the town plug 78. This pin is engaged in the forked end of a lever 83 mounted at. pivot in its middle, at 84, on the support plate 79, and provided, at its other end, with a roller 85.
This is on the way. adjustable cam to. axial movement 86 carried by the rod 63 which actuates the pawl 61. When, during the return movement of the pawl 61, the rod 63 is driven backwards, the conical front face of the cam 86 strikes the roller 85, and the pivoting lever 83 moves the pawl 72 away from the advancing disc 57. As a result of the return movement of the rod 63, the disc is released from the pawl 61 and the retaining pawl 72, but is not yet released from the pawl 73.
The pawl 61 is driven back until it engages in the next notch and, at this time, the roller 85 has passed from the conical surface of the cam 86 over its cylindrical surface. that, so that the pawl 72 is maintained in its retracted position; in this way, when the rod 63 begins to return in the other direction, the pawl 61, which is engaged, drives the disc clockwise beyond the. stop position initially ensured by the pawl 72, overcoming the resistance offered by the pawl 73, the latter coming out of the notch in which it was engaged.
The return movement of the rod 68 continuing, the roller 85 abandons the cylindrical surface of the cam 86 and falls abruptly on the, on the conical face, the retaining pawl 72 resting by its flat end on the edge of the disc. , between two consecutive notches 58. At the precise moment when the. rod 63 ends its movement in this direction, the pawl 72 passes over the next stop notch 58, and under the pressure of the coil spring 80, when the front edge of the notch reaches the rear edge of the pawl, that This is thrown sharply and forcefully into the notch, which effectively restores the position and alignment of the advancement disc 57 and therefore causes the wheel to work in its new working position.
Having mounted the plates 76 and 79 differently on the face of the frame 11 and by adjusting the length of the rod 63, as well as the articulation of this rod and of the rod 65 with the lever 64, each of the pawls can easily be placed. 61, 72 and 73 for a dif ferent number of stop notches and for a different spacing between them, depending on whether the various types of wheels will be required.
The drilling mechanism P (fig. 1, 2, 8 and 8a) is placed on the left of the wheel thus mounted and placed in position. It is not carried by a frame made up of two anterior and posterior cast iron uprights 87 and 88, through which is arranged the control device of the mechanism, the drilling tools being on the contrary arranged longitudinally. The drilling tools include a die 89 having an opening 90 and a punch 91.
The die is carried by the projecting front end 9; 2 of the end part 93, in the form of a hook, of an arm 94 which can slide longitudinally in guides 95 mounted on the top of the uprights 87 and 88 (fig. 8). This arm is of sufficient proportions and is strong enough to withstand the forces of the drilling operation. The punch 91 is removably mounted or drilled in the anterior end of the reciprocating arm 96, which is housed in a groove 97 formed in the main part of the arm 94.
The two slides can be removed by removing the top of their supports 95. The arm 94 is substantially uniform in width and fits exactly in its supports over its entire length. The groove 97 is not of uniform width, but is, on the contrary, narrower at its front end than at its middle, so that, while the arm 96 is held tightly in the supports formed by the walls of the l The front end of the groove 97, the rear end of this arm, as well as the control mechanism, can work freely in the wider, intermediate part of the groove, as is indicated by the play visible on the. fig. 9.
The control mechanism for the arms 96 and 94 of the drilling device is shown in FIGS. 8 and 9.
With particular reference to FIG. 8, it can be seen that this device comprises a pressure lever formed: arms 98 and 99 re linked respectively to the arms 94 and 96 and joined together. the other by the joint 100a. This pressure lever is pulled down to move the punch 91 and 1a away from each other. die 89, and is pushed upwards to bring them closer together. The control is obtained by a connecting rod 100 driven by a vertical reciprocating movement. Inside the groove <B> 97, </B> the arm 94 is provided with an adjustable block <B> 101 </B> having a convex head 10.2, which forms articulation with the concave seat 103 formed at the end of the arm 98 of the pressure lever.
The block 101 is slidably mounted in a slide 104 formed at the rear end of the groove 97 and its rear end inclined relative to the horizontal is in contact with an adjustable position wedge 105, which can be adjusted. vertically by means of a threaded rod 106 which screws into the arm 94 and is held by a tightening screw 106a in a projection 106b. By adjusting the wedge 105 it is possible to vary the distance which separates the punch 91 from its die 89.
The arm 96 is also provided, at its rear end, with a convex head <B> 1.07, </B> similar to. the head 102 and, like the latter, being housed in the concave bearing surface 108 of the arm 99 of the pressure lever. Each of the lever arms to. pressure carries at its upper end a plate 109 which is screwed onto it from each side and hand held in alignment at its lower end by an ear 110 which projects inwardly, these plates covering the joints 102, 103, 107, 108 of the pressure lever at their upper part. Trunnions 111 pass axially through the bearings formed by the convex heads 102, 107 and, through the covering ends of the plates 109, connect these bearings together.
In this way, the arms 98, 99 of the pressure lever and the arms 94, 96 of the drilling mechanism are provided with large area net pads formed directly between the members to resist the high pressures resulting from the drilling, and the plates 109 and the journals <B> 111. </B> constitute a means of return of the arms 94, 96 after drilling.
The articulation 100a between the arms 98, 99 and the connecting rod 100 is of particular construction. The two opposite half-hinges 112, 113 of the pressure lever arms are provided with convex ends complementary to the concave end 114 of the connecting rod 100. The convexity of these two half-hinges is carried by the larger one. part of a circle of uniform diameter. The remaining parts <B> 115, </B> 11.6 of the arms 98, 99 are cut back to the diameter of the convex end and, at the bottom of the. cut out part, are of concave shape complementary to the convex half-hinge of the corresponding opposite arm, as indicated in detail in figs. 9 and 8a.
On the opposite sides of the. connecting rod 100 are arranged <B> 117 </B>. Analogues to the plates 109 of the arms 98 and 99, held opposite each other by lower lugs 118 lo gées. In the body of the connecting rod 100 and bolted on the plates, as is see in fig. 8 and 9 and covering the joint 100d. A pin 116a axially crosses this articulation, inside the two half-hinges 112, <B> 113 </B> from the arms 98, 99 and through the ends of the plates 117.
As a result, as in the case of the arms of the pressure sink and the drilling arms, here the journal and the arms of the lever. pressure are provided, on the one hand, at the articulation, with contact faces which constitute net cushions with a large surface area through which the pressure resulting from the drilling is transmitted and, on the other hand, with a means for actuating the pressure lever comprising the spindle and the opposing plates 117 in common connection with all the parts.
The connecting rod 100 is animated by a substantially vertical back and forth movement by means of cams <B> 119, </B> 120 driven by a shaft 121. The cam 119 is in contact with a central roller 122 journalling directly in the forked lower end 123 of the upper part or head of the connecting rod 100. There are two cams 120, one on each side of the connecting rod 100 and each of them is engaged with a roller 124 pivoting on the corresponding lower extension 125 which starts from the corresponding fork 123 of the connecting rod 100.
These extensions are U-shaped, the arms of the U being bolted to the side faces of the fork 1.23, as seen in Figs. 8 and 9, and the roller 124 being carried by the bottom of the U, these arrangements being such that the U-shaped extension surrounds the shaft 121 and is of sufficient size to allow the connecting rod to perform its upward movement. and ashes on the tree unhindered.
The connecting rod is supported by upper and lower sliding bearings 126 and <B> 127 </B> formed on the internal faces of the side uprights 87, 88 of the frame (fig. 8a and 9), at the. both by means of rollers 128 carried by (the lateral extensions of the spindle 129 which carry the roller 122, and by means of lower rollers 124 arranged in continuation of one another. The lower slide 127 is substantially vertical and the The axis of the guide cam rollers 12.4 is permanently located in the same vertical plane as the control shaft 121.
The axes of the guide rollers 128 and of the articulation 100a lie substantially on this extension when the pressure lever is folded and the die 89 and the punch 91 separated as seen in the. fig. 8. But the upper slides 126 are inclir_r @. to the right for a certain length, as clearly shown in fig. 8, so that when the.
connecting rod 100 moves upwards, the whole of the connecting rod is pushed to the right by oscillating about the axis of the guide cam rollers 124, thus shifting not only the articulation 100a towards the right but, in at the same time, the - intrice 89 and the punch 91. The reason for c - @! e -disposition will be explained now.
The connecting rod 100 is moved upward as a result of the engagement of the cam 119 by the central roller 122. This cam has a rapid ramp 130 which determines the abrupt rise of the connecting rod 100 over a certain distance. This distance is approximately that which, as a result of the combination of the movement to the right caused by the inclined face of the guide 126, and the proportional and simultaneous folding movement of the pressure lever 98, 99, will bring the punch 91 into position. real contact with the rim 131 of the wheel to be worked. The parts then occupy the position shown in FIG. 8a.
The guide rollers 128 have reached the upper ends of the guides 12.6, in which position these guides are widely spaced from each other, as shown in detail in FIG. 8a. Consequently, when the die 89 and the punch 91 are both brought into the working position on the wheel, the body of the wheel is not subjected to any of the forces or thrusts determined by the drilling, because the thrust @du punch 91 and die reaction 89 are opposed to each other. the other and are completely absorbed in direct reaction by the rim 131 and the flange 132 which are drilled.
The operating mechanism is also not tired, since the guide rollers 128 play freely in the enlarged upper end of the slides 126. As the punch 91 hits the outer surface of the rim 131, the matrix 89 is not everything. made in contact. with the re-edge 132. 'Not only does this play make it possible to compensate for slight inaccuracies in dimensions, but also allows the punch 91 to go into clear contact and, because of this contact, the guide rollers 12i8 are released at the time where die 89 meets flange 139.
The drilling cam 119 comprises, immediately near the rapid ramp 130, by which the drilling mechanism is brought to this position, a gently sloping ramp 133 which makes it possible to divert the drilling forces. This face is shaped to reduce the speed of the relative movement of the punch and the die, and to receive the very powerful pressures necessary to effectively pierce the metal. This ra, Ùlpe 133 gives the arms 98, 99 of the pressure lever their upward straightening movement. During this movement, there is no guiding or tensioning contact of the cam rollers 12.8 with the upper ends of the slides 12.2.
Near the end of this movement, the punch 91, thanks to the conical collar 134 which it presents, makes a milling of the edge of the hole which has been drilled, a hole of which the general shape, as it results from the con formation of the anterior end of the awl, is: cylindrical, while the collar is conical. The drilling ramp 133 of the cam 119 is immediately followed by a release ramp 135. Although this ramp does not rest on the roller during the movement of withdrawal of the punch and the die, it is nevertheless shaped. such that it allows them to move back freely under the effect of the cam 20.
The withdrawal cams 120 are wedged on the shaft 121 at an angle such that, at the end of the drilling operation, they come into contact with the guide cam rollers 1.24 by a front withdrawal ramp 136 and ra leads the connecting rod 100 downwards, and, by this retraction movement, the arms 98 and 99 of the pressure lever @ are found closed or r # - bent under the effect of the drilling cam 119, the die 89 and the punch 9'1 being withdrawn from their working position (FIG. 8a).
When the extreme retracted position is reached, the rollers 124 pass over an extended circular face 137 of the cams 120, on which they roll during the remainder of the machine's operations until the moment when the drilling operation must be carried out. next. At this time the rollers have reached the ramp 138 of the cams 1.20, this ramp being inclined sharply towards the hub of the cam, in a manner more or less symmetrical to the ramp 136, and-. of the steep slope control ramp 130 of the drilling cam 119 which strikes the upper roller 122 just: at this moment.
The metal cut in the rim by the bore is forced back into the hollow part 139 of the die 89 (FIG. 9). This hollow part has, near the edge .de the die, a narrowing 140 which decreases to some extent the ease with which the cutouts can pass through the hollow: of the die. In addition, as a result of a folding of a thickness of metal on the edge of the other due to the piercing operated by the punch 91 and the narrowing 140 of the duct 139, the cuts collect in the latter. in the form of a rod. In the extension of the duct 139 is formed, in the rear end of the arm 92, a flanged sleeve 141.
Obliquely with respect to the end of the opening 142 of this socket, a city plug 143 is arranged in the desired position to direct the cutouts which fall one by one into a chute 144, which is connected by a cap 145 with the sleeve 141 and from where they are discharged at any point located below the machine.
The punch 91 and the die 89 are interchangeably mounted in the arms 92a and 96 respectively, which allows them to be removed, either separately or simultaneously, without difficulty for repairs and sharpening, and to replace them. by tools of different dimensions to make cutouts of different diameters and to work on wheels of different dimensions. It suffices to modify the relative lengths of the punches 91 and of the dies 89 to vary radially with respect to the wheel, the position of the normal vacuum existing between them, and to adapt the drilling mechanism to the work of a wheel of corresponding diameter. .
Following the wheel in a counterclockwise direction (clockwise), there is a mechanism F which is used to feed the rivets with the drilled holes. The wheels are driven step by step by the .d 'mechanism. advance I described above, counterclockwise when viewed from the front of the machine, should result in the indicated arrangement of the mechanisms described.
This feed mechanism I comprises a box-like container 146 (Figs. 14 and 15) containing a supply of rivets, a feed conduit 147 by means of which a long series of vertically placed rivets are fed from the container to a container. feed position determined on one of the sides of the wheel being worked on, a straightening mechanism designated as a whole by 148, by means of which the rivets en masse are progressively straightened and discharged into a hopper of feed 147, and a gripping and insertion device, the assembly of which is designated by 149,
which has the function of taking the rivet when it occupies the feed position determined at the end of the hopper 147 and of putting it in position in the hole which has been drilled in the rim of the wheel.
The tank 146 is constituted by a box mounted on a frame 150 which rises on the flat upper face B of the base of the machine, and extends horizontally to the rear of the drilling mechanism P and to the left. locking mechanisms C and advancement I. In general, this tank is located on a horizontal plane, its hopper being inclined with respect to the assembly plane of the working wheel. The hopper 147 is fixed on the reservoir 146 and the same is the case with the rectifier mechanism 148; the whole can be adjusted vertically by means of a vertically movable clamping block 151, serving to support it on the support 152.
The rectifier mechanism has an oscillating trough-shaped piece 153 which is pivoted in the front end of the box 146 on a transverse axis 154, extends lengthwise inside the body of the box and oscillates .d'ans a vertical plane at an angle such that its trough-shaped upper edge is. driven downwards in a mass of rivets contained in the reservoir see 146 near its bottom, then causes it to rise until this upper trough-shaped edge is substantially in a straight line with the projection of the, hopper 147 with which its anterior end located on the side of the joint corresponds exactly.
The hopper 147 and the winking bone extension 153 have the same shape, that is to say their body has. a length which follows exactly the shank of the rivets, but without admitting their head at any point whatsoever along the length of the organs, so that the rivets caught in the trough-shaped piece 1.53 when it goes up in the mass of rivets contained in reservoir 146, fall, if they are vertical, with their rods, into the trough. If they are not vertical, they pass obliquely with respect to: at the upper end of the supported trough, in different positions, by their heads, their ends or their sides.
Near the outer end of the trough 153, starting from the articulation axes 154, is disposed a stop 155 fixed to the body of the tank 146 and passing through the hopper from the bottom up to the upper edge by means of a slot 15.6 formed in the anterior end of the hopper. The upper end of this stop 155 is tapered or pointed and is located in the plane occupied by the upper edge of the trough 153 when the latter is at the upward end of travel. On the reservoir 146 is also fixed an element 157 of the. stop, which has the shape of a vertical plate carrying a movable slide 158, which has, at its. lower part, a groove 159 of a shape corresponding to a rivet placed vertically and whose dimensions are a little greater than that of the rivet.
The lower end of this groove is closed by the upper edge of the element 155 of the stopper and completes the profile with a rivet placed vertically. Only a vertical rivet can exceed this stop. All the rivets contained in the bucket 153 slide down under the action of their own weight when the hopper is in its raised position, and the rivets which are in the immediate vicinity cl (, the. Stopper and which are Also in a vertical position, protrude beyond the stop when the hopper stops in its upstroke. Those which have not been straightened are lying more or less obliquely or at the end against the stop at the downstroke. dante .of. the. hopper.
They are pushed back from in front of this stop and out of the hopper by the part 155 which goes. widening downwards. These rivets exceed the stop 155, 157, slide freely from the anterior end of the bucket 153 in a hopper 147 in which they rest one behind the other and are, by their own weight, brought against the device of extreme drive 160, which is formed by a shutter 1:61 of the hopper 147. At this point, the top of the hopper is deflected and made with the body thereof at an angle such that it is almost horizontal.
Its side walls are thin, as seen in fig. 18; they wrap around the shank of the rivet, in drive position 160, to a diameter less than the extreme diameter of the rivet head, as shown in 162. The hopper end is secured and supported. by the upper face of the base through the intermediary of a vertical support 163. This support 163 is adjustable by means of the clamping device 164, with a view to adjusting the height of the feed device 160.
The gripping and inserting mechanism 149 is supported and actuated by a vertical shaft 165 which can make a combined vertical reciprocating and oscillating movement about its axis. A support 166 passes through the base B from its underside, see fig. 23 and 14, and is fixed to the base by a lower collar 167. The arrangement of the axes of the shaft 165, of the driving position 160 and of the axis of the hole 168 drilled in the working wheel, which is found arranged vertically in front of any position, relative to the axis of the locking device C, forms an isosceles triangle whose base is formed by the line which connects the axis of the feed device 160 and the axis the drilled hole (see fig. 14 and 36).
A gripping arm 1'68 is disposed radially on the upper end of shaft 165; it follows that these oscillations successively intersect the axis of the device 160 and the axis of the drilled hole 188 in line with the axis of the locking mechanism. This arm is fixed in an adjustable manner by a clamp 169 on the shaft 165. On the upper end of the shaft 165 is fixed angularly, by means of a stud 171, a fork-shaped shoulder 170, this stud passing through the body of the shoulder and resting on a flat formed at the upper end of the shaft 165.
It can be freely adjusted in height, as can the gripping arm 168. The legs of the fork are provided with set screws 173 coming into contact with the opposite faces of the arm 168, so that after the clamp 169 has been loosened, the relative displacement of the screws 173 makes it possible to adjust the angular position of this arm relative to the forked shoulder 170.
The anterior part 174 of the arm 169 is connected to the body of this arm 168 by a transverse articulated lever which yields upwards under the action of the pressure, but which cannot flex downwards because of the stop wall. 176. The forearm 174 is normally held in the lower position by an adjustable coil spring 177 (fig. 1.1). This forearm is provided at its outer end with two identical vertical fingers 178. These fingers are carried by a vertical support, of substantially cylindrical shape, 179 fixed in the vertical opening 180 of the end of the front. arm 174, by nuts 181.
The support body 179 which passes through the opening 180 is tapered and, between the end of the forearm and the shoulder formed by the reduced diameter portion, it is surrounded by a coil spring 182 plus weak than the coil spring 177, and which serves to maintain the forearm in its lower position. The lower end of the support 179 is grooved transversely over the entire width of the shoulder and it is in the. groove thus formed in which the fingers 178 are housed. These fingers are articulated to the support by pins 183 (fie. 20) which pass only through the opposite outer ends of the respective transverse branches.
Their articulations come to bear against the collar 184, which is pushed downwards by the spring 182 against the shoulders formed on the fingers, so that the tips 185 of the fingers are pushed towards each other. These ends are tapered towards their adjacent points, so as to present a pointed end directed towards the axis of the support 179.
At mid-height of the fingers and on the vertical axis of the support piece is a transverse rod fixed in the body of the support. This shank is at a height above the tapered finger tips slightly greater than the height of the rivet head, and the upper edges of the finger tips are further shaped so as to form an opening capable of receiving a rivet head.
Thus established, the gripping mechanism, as a result of the oscillation of the shaft 165 which brings it in the extension of the axis of the feed device 160 (fig. 14 and 3,6), can then slide. downwards, the axis of the support piece and the axis of the drive position coinciding, until the fingertips 1.86 come to rest on the head of a rivet, in the position 160, as the slant walls 182 of the end of the hopper 147, have slid over and under the head of the rivet in position; they can then go up vertically, their axes always coinciding up to a point where the support part and the fingers, when they have made their movement. of oscillation, would stain there. rim of the working wheel;
they can then oscillate angularly to travel the angle at the top of the isosceles triangle of the axes, then descend again vertically on the axis of the drilled hole 188 in which the rivet must. be placed and when they have been thus lowered, project the shank of the gripped rivet into the free drilled hole. The tips 186 of these fingers will come into contact with the flange 132 of the. working wheel and as a result of the pivoting of the fingers on the axes 183 offset laterally with respect to the ends, will move aside to release the head of the rivet and push it downwards under the effect of the meeting of the. rod 187 with its. head.
The shaft 165 can then go up and the cycle of operations of the mechanism which has just been described begins again in order to grasp and re-introduce a rivet, but in this new operation, the rivet introduced will not be grasped again for the simple reason. Because the protruding ends of the fingers are below the lower tapered tips 186 and the tips are retained in the upper position above the lower faces of the head of the rivet placed in the drilled hole.
Any superfluous movement ,. in the vertical direction, either in the gripping position 160, or in the. introduction position 188 after the spring 182 has reached its limit of flexion and the fingers 178 have opened to their widest opening, is stopped by the forearm 174 which moves upwards overcoming the tension of the spring 177 of the forearm. This arrangement intended to prevent any exaggerated movement is particularly advantageous because it ensures safe operation, without taking into account the slight differences in dimensions of the workpiece.
Besides this, however, in case a hole drilled in which a rivet would already have. been put in place would be in the entry position 188, as is the case during the working period of the wheel because of the need to arrange the various mechanisms around the periphery of the wheel instead of them. group in a single point, the engagement of the end of the shank of a rivet gripped with the head of the rivet already in place, rejects a rivet gripped against the shank 187 and consequently rejects the forearm towards the up without opening the fingers 178, without dislodging the rivet already gripped and without damaging the feed mechanism F. This gripped rivet is then returned to the gripping position 160 and there, instead of a new rivet being gripped,
the rod of the ri vet already gripped hits the head of the rivet which is in position 160 and it follows that the movement of the forearm 174 prevents the opening of the fingers 178, and the hand holds the rivet held by them so that it is shown at the working wheel until a drilled but unfilled hole occupies the insertion position 188. In this way, the feed is controlled by the state of vacuum or filling of the holes in which the rivets must be inserted.
The mechanism performs these various operations under the control of the devices shown more particularly in FIGS. 23 to 2.5. The: devices shown in FIGS. 24 and 25 actuate the recovery mechanism 148. The shaft 189 extends transversely with respect to the underside of the base of the plinth 13 and is connected thereto by vertical uprights 190. The axis of this shaft is located in a plane between the gripping and insertion mechanism 149 and the straightening mechanism 148. It carries an eccentric 191 fitted with an eccentric collar <B> 192 </B> formed around the eccentric 191 so as to be in the same plane.
This eccentric collar 19'2 is provided with a pair of ears 193 between which is articulated, so as to be able to wink, a bar 194 connected to balls in 195 with the lower arm 196 of an angled lever <B> 196, </B> 197 capable of oscillating about an axis 198 constituted by a shaft 199 pivoting in the elbow lever and journaled to. its turn in the lower end of the support block 200 carried on the underside of the base 13. The arm 197 of this bent lever is connected, by a longitudinally adjustable rod 201, to the oscillating extension of the hopper 153 of the recovery mechanism 148.
Through this train of mechanism @de command, the extension of the hopper 153 oscillates in the manner that a. been previously described without wasted time and with great efficiency, despite the oblique arrangement, in general, of the feed mechanism F since the mode of connection of the rod 194 to its associated parts takes completely into account the angular changes which may occur. produced during the oscillating movement of the crank lever 196, 197. All the devices shown in fig. 23 are provided for carrying out the combined oscillating and reciprocating movements of the shaft 165.
These devices include two grooves. cam 202 and 203 on the two opposite sides of a cam plate 204 mounted on a shaft 189 which controls the straightening mechanism. But these devices are generally arranged on the right of the tree instead of being on the left as in the case of the straightening mechanism. The elliptical groove 203 is that which communicates a reciprocating motion to the shaft 165 along its vertical axis. It is formed on the anterior face of the cam plate 204, symmetrical with respect to the axis of the shaft 189.
A roller 20.5 is engaged with it and is mounted at one end of a cam lever 206 pivoted at its middle in a support 207 carried by the base B and which engages its other end 208 with a flanged collar 209 secured to the lower shouldered end of shaft 165 by means of a nut 210. For each revolution of shaft 189, shaft 165 is driven by a double back-and-forth movement. comes ver tical. The cam groove 202 is located on the opposite side of the part 204.
A roller 211 is engaged with it and is mounted between the opposite ends 212 and 213 of the lever 214 pivotally mounted by its lower end 212 on a support 215 integral with the base B, and connected by its upper end 213 to a connecting rod 216 to universal joint which is connected to. its turn with an arm 2117 slidably connected by a tongue 218 to the shaft 165, see fig. 14. These devices, make the shaft 165 oscillate once per revolution, the shaft <B> 189. </B> The cam grooves 202 and 20 are arranged at such an angle relative to each other that they are symmetrical on either side of the minor axis 219 of the elliptical groove 203.
The dimension of the axis granil 220 of the cam groove 203 and the dimension of the cam groove 202 are respectively such that the full extent of the reciprocating motion of the shaft 165 between the horizontal plane of the gripping position 160 which is the same as the cctle of the introduction position 188, and the upper end of the movement will give. all the rim set required for the job of any wheel of any size. The amplitude of the oscillation movement is approximately equal to the angle at the apex of the isosceles triangle of the axes of the mechanism as it has. been indicated.
It is possible to take into account the variations which have been indicated above, thanks to the various springs which are combined with the gripping arms, as well as to the aid of the clamping screws 173 of the forked shoulder 1.70. Thus, for abacus complete oscillation of the shaft 165 according to the angle at the top of the triangle, it is animated by a double back-and-forth movement, once to grasp a rivet in position 160 and once to introduce a rivet in the rim in position 1.88, and each be exactly in coincidence with the axes of these positions.
The arm <B> 2117 </B> is retained in the desired relative position with the rod 216 by the engagement of its collar 221 danq the recess formed on the underside of the. flange 167 of the post 1.66, engagement which is ensured by a bolt 222 screwed on the other side of the flange. A small setting of the limits of the symmetrical movement and a determination of these limits is obtained by the device shown in FIG. 22.
This comprises an extension 223 of the outer end of the support 166, provided with two ears 224 which extend radially and in which are mounted tightening screws 225, acting in combination with the opposite faces of a part. arched 226 carried by the collar 227 clamped in an adjustable manner by members 228 on the body of the shaft 165 (Figs, 14 and 22). The angle between the spokes passing through the ends of the adjusting screws 225, reduced by that formed by the end faces of the.
part 226 -is substantially equal to the angle at the apex of the isosceles triangle of the axes of the mechanism, which ensures the reduction of the oscillatory movement between the gripping and introduction axes 160 and 188.
The rivets placed in position 188 after the working wheel has been advanced by an angle of about 90, as seen in fig. 10, are riveted in place by the riveting mechanism R. This mechanism is somewhat analogous, in its entirety and, in general, in its function, to the drilling mechanism I, as will be seen. see at. using fig. 9, 10 and 11. But it differs from it not only by the operation which it performs, but also appreciably by a certain number of points concerning the movements and the mechanisms by which they are carried out.
The rivets are retained in their position in the drilled holes by a fixed elastic rete band 427, arranged in an arc adjacent to. the internal surface of the rim 32 and is held in this position by two supports, one of which 228 is bolted to the external face 229 of the frame 11 which supports the locking mechanism C, and of which the other, 229, is supported by the same face at a point adjacent to the lower wall of the riveting mechanism. This strip 427 rests against the heads of the rivets introduced when they leave position 188 and prevents them from falling outside the drilled holes. However, the arch is not contiguous with the heads over its entire length, as it deviates slightly from them in a certain position of the rim to an extent and for a purpose which will be explained later.
The riveting position is designated by 230. In this position, the rivet head is clamped by a block 231 and a riveting punch 232 acts on the shank of the rivet. The block 2, 31 is shaped to have a hollow complementary to the head of the rivet, while the. punch head 232 a. a substantially flat shape suitable for crushing the shank of the rivet when it is drilled into the countersink of the outer end of the drilled hole.
Block 231 and riveting punch 232 are both removably fixed to the supporting members, as indicated, by means of bolts 233 and 934 respectively, so that they can be easily removed and replaced with components. .similar arranged to act on wheels of different sizes and types.
Block 2.31 is in a fixed position and is carried by the front end of a hook-shaped arm 235, this arm being secured in position by means of bolts on the upper faces of a pair of bare cast iron flanges. 236, 237, similar in all points of view to the frames 86, 8 7 which constitute the work support for the drilling mechanism P. The punch 232 is mounted in the outer end forming the support of the arm with backward movement. -and-comes 238 which is mounted so as to be able to slide in a bearing 239 formed internally in the mass of the front end of the fixed arm 235. Between the two ends of the arm 235 is formed an opening 240, exactly as in the case of the sliding arm 94 of the drilling mechanism.
At the opposite end of the groove 240 and opposite the support 239 is arranged another support 241, clans which can slide a block 242 normally fixed. This sliding block is cut obliquely downwards and to the right at its rear end and rests against an adjustable wedge 243, the height adjustment of which is controlled by a screw 244, so that the block can be thrown forward by adjusting the wedge down. Block 242 is secured in any one of the adjustment positions by an obliquely acting clamping screw 245 which passes through it. cantilever support 2.46 formed in the body of the arm 235. Cover plates hold the sliders 238 and 241 in their positions.
To interconnect the convex inner ends 247, 248 of the sliders 238 and 241 respectively, the two arms 249, 250 of a pressure lever whose concave-shaped ends cooperate with convex heads 247 and 248 are arranged. opposite sides of these arms 249 and 250 are in turn at mid-thickness, one of the parts, 251, being convex and the other, 252, concave, these concavities and: convexities being of the same diameter with the aim that they can engage each other and rest on each other, as shown in FIG. 11.
The two convex extremes 251 bear on the concave complementary upper extremity 253 of a connecting rod 254 actuated by the same control shaft 68 as the advancing mechanism I. In this way, when the lever at. pressure 249, 250 is actuated to be brought to its open position by a movement of the. connecting rod 254 upwards, the related pieces bear directly on one another via the support surfaces of amply sufficient proportions to develop the maximum pressures desired for riveting.
The lever at. pressure is folded back and the parts returned to their normal position after riveting by means of end plates 255 at the upper ends of the pressure lever arms and like end plates 256 at the upper end of the connecting rod . These are, in general, similar to the end plates 109 which are used in combination with the pressure lever devices or the P drilling mechanism.
They are bolted to the opposite sides of the arms and the connecting rod, are provided with. their lower ends of an alignment device comprising a recessed lug 257, placed transversely to the part with which it is combined, and, at their upper ends, they carry pins 258 which also pass through the ends convex mites of the organs mounted on the axes which coincide with the axes of the joints of which they are part.
A back-and-forth movement is imparted to the connecting rod 257 by an eccentric 259 mounted on the shaft 68 with which it is connected by an eccentric collar 260. Thanks to this arrangement of the parts, and consequently of the constant stroke of eccentric 259, riveting punch 232 a. a constant stroke length. However, the position of this stroke can be adjusted with the greatest precision by means of a wedge 244.
This setting is such that when the rivet is pushed upside down towards the flange <B> 132 </B> of the rivet wheel, the head of the punch 232, at the end of its internal movement, rivets the protruding rod of the lowered rivet, in the external end of the drilled hole, in which the rivet rests , crushing the end of the shank to exactly fill this countersunk part and to form a riveted outer end which is substantially flush with the outer surface of the rim itself.
To coordinate the operations of the drilling and riveting mechanisms and, with the help of these mechanisms, to carry out that part of the process which consists in freely placing the wheel to work on the tools, so as to eliminate any effort for the wheel or mechanisms, a displacement mechanism S acts on the workpiece to move it from a drilling position to a riveting position. This mechanism rl, # displacement S acts on the workpiece by means of the blocking mechanism C and particularly by means of the support frame 11 of this blocking mechanism. This mechanism is shown in detail in FIG. 6.
The movement from the piercing position to the riveting position consists of a rotary movement of relatively small amplitude around the shaft 12, from the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 10, to that shown in dotted lines. The position shown in solid lines is a riveting position and that in dotted lines a drilling position. The latter corresponds to the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 8. This movement moves the center of the locking mechanism and hence the center of the workpiece from piercing position 2e63 (Fig. 10), following arc 2.62, to riveting position 261.
It passes the rim and therefore the drilled hole which must occupy the riveting position 230 from a position remote from the die 264, from the block 233, as shown in dotted lines in FIG. 10, following an arc 265, concentric with the shaft 7.2, at a position almost contiguous with the face of the die 264, as seen in solid lines in this figure. In this movement, the body of the wheel to be worked and the locking mechanism C which supports it are made to rest freely on the. head of the ri vet in position 230. That is to say shits the total weight of the body of the wheel and the major part of the weight of the locking mechanism C and of the advancement mechanism I are rejected by their weight around axis 12 on the head of the rivet to be placed.
A reaction spring 266 can be used to adjust the action of this weight on the rivet head when the workpiece axis is in its lower position designated as 261. As a result, almost all of the riveting thrust is removed from die 2-64 of fixed block 231 and is not transmitted in any way to the wheel frame and it is not possible to warp the wheel, even the smallest, during riveting.
That. also allows the machine to work on wheels with small variations in dimensions, also allows the protruding heads of the rivets to pass freely through the riveting position 230 without moving the die 264 and to subsequently adapt them exactly in its bowl and it also makes it possible to advance the workpiece without any hindrance between the heads of rivets and the tools which must work them.
The mechanism 8, by means of which this movement is carried out, comprises an angled lever 267, mounted on a shaft 268 (fig. 6) and acting, by the bearing of its horizontal upper branch 269, on a plate 270 fixed to the flange. transverse <B> 2 </B> 71 of frame 1l. of the locking mechanism C. The lower and pendant arm 272 of this bent lever is provided at its end with a roller 273 that a cam 274, carried by a short transverse shaft 275, operates to make the bent lever 267 oscillate, this shaft 275 being actuated by toothed pinions 276 which receives their movement from the control shaft 189 of the gripping and intro duction mechanism described above.
This control shaft extends transversely to the base B of the machine, below it. The elbow lever 267 is pivotally mounted on the base, and its lower arm 272 passes through a groove <B> 277. </B> The cam 274 has a face 278 concentric with the shaft 275 and of relatively small diameter, which allows the roller 273 to move into a low position in which the workpiece is lowered to the row position full (fig. 10 by a partial revolution of the shaft 275.
A neighboring face 279 with rapid rise then comes into contact with the roller to move it and, by means of the train of mechanisms described, to raise it. workpiece in the position shown in dotted lines in fig. 8 and 10. In this position, it is retained by its engagement with the elongated concentric face 280 of the cam. Between ramp 2.80 and the raised or drilling position and ramp 278 from the lowered or raised position, there is a steep, substantially radial ramp 281 which, when it reaches roller 273, allows the wheel to drop back down. more or less quickly in the low or riveting position, under the effect of its own weight and the weight of the mechanism which supports it. This fall is slowed down by a spring 266 shown in FIG. 6.
This spring is mounted in an adjustable manner in a socket 282 and acts on the frame 11 via the pin 284.
The axis 12, around which this displacement movement takes place, is housed in a transverse vertical plane passing halfway between the active ends of the die 264 and of the riveting punch 232 (fig. 10) when they are are at their maximum spacing. This produces a substantially recilinear movement of the riveting position 230 in the case of a wheel of medium diameter and, therefore, of wheels of all diameters included in the working capacity of the. machine, a minimum displacement of the rivets in the relatively fixed matrix 264. In addition, the axis of the riveting mechanism denoted as a whole by 286, instead of being horizontal, is disposed in a slight downward and upward inclination. inside, on the side of the.
workpiece, so that it is arranged, when the workpiece is in its low or riveting position, along an exactly radial line which coincides with the axis of the drilled hole and of the rivet occupying position 230, and passes through the center 26-3 of the workpiece. As a result, the riveting operation is still carried out along an exactly radial line as is suitable for obtaining the best results.
The various mechanisms described above are controlled by the main motor shaft 287 (fig. 5) disposed longitudinally, journaling: in the bearings 288 and which protrudes rearwardly from the rear face 289 of the base B of the machine. This tree is controlled by an electric motor 290 at a suitable speed. It controls the right and left transverse shafts 121 and 68 respectively of the drilling mechanisms P and displacement S through the intermediary of worm gears 291 and to. helical wheels 292.
The latter are linked to their respective shafts by axially actuated claw clutches 293 and 294, the claws of which are in such a relationship that they are practically free of play or partially inactive movement. The left clutch clutch 2'93 (fig. 5) of the drilling mechanism is operated by a lever 2.95 connected to the return arm 296 of the longitudinal control shaft 297 using a link 298. The lever 296 is connected by a fork with the clutch.
The right clutch 294 is also operated by a lever 299, a return arm 300, an oscillating shaft 301 carrying the return arm and which constitutes a longitudinal extension of the shaft 297, and a connecting rod 302. The arms of return are wedged on the respective parts of the shafts <B> 297 </B> and 301, so that they can be operated regardless of which trees are moving slowly. When the clutches are engaged, the mechanisms actuated by shafts 121 and 68 operate. as described, and when they are not engaged, these mechanisms cease to function (see Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 6).
The transverse shaft 189, which operates the feed P and displacement S mechanisms via the indicated gears, is also controlled by the main motor shaft 284, via a worm screw. end 303 (fi (y. 6) and a helical impeller 304. This is engaged and disengaged with the shaft which it controls, as in the case of the other mechanisms, by means of a claw clutch 305 of the same type as those already described A U-shaped support arm 306 carries the journal of the outer end of shaft 189.
This clutch is actuated by the straight part 300 of the control shaft 297, 300 by means of a crank arm 307 mounted on this part of the control shaft and connected by a connecting rod 308 to the arm 309 of a le elbow handle 309, 310 pivoting in the support 311 placed above the control shaft 287 and which projects said elbow lever into a position such that its fork 310 moves the movable element 313. brRvagn. This clutch 305 is also of the type with square claws and axial movement free of play.
The mechanisms of this whole group are coordinated in their interaction on the. wheel in work by the adjustment mechanisrrtn. The latter, designated by T, is shown more specifically in FIGS. 26 and 27 which are respectively a plan and the rear view of this mechanism. This generally acts by means of the sections 297, 300 of the control shaft of the claw clutches 293, 294 and of the condaire coupling 305 which has just been described.
Its central element is a disc 314 which rotates above the base $ and the shaft 297, 300, on an axis 319a housed in the interior of the machine but very close to said shaft. The sections 297 and 300 of this shaft are independently pivoted on the base B and on the adjustment disc 314 are mounted an or gane 315 which cooperates with the arm 316 mounted on the shaft section 297 and a part <B> 317 </B> which cooperates with an arm 318 mounted on the section 301.
The two sections of the shaft are coupled by means of a claw coupling 319 having a clearance such that the section <B> 297 </B> can be operated independently; the section 300 to disengage the coupling which it controls, but the direction of operation of the coupling <B> 319 </B> is such that when the shaft 300 is actuated, it also actuates the shaft 297, so that the two couplings controlled by these sections are actuated. This coupling is indicated in dotted lines, in plan on the fi ,. 26 and in elevation on the fi-. 27.
The disc 314 is mounted on an axis 319a journalled -.- ertically in a bearing 320 itself mounted on the upper face of the base B, immediately in front of the shaft \ 397,:; O (). The assembly is carried out by means of a ring 321 (fig. 27) on which the say 31-1- is directly mounted. Above this disc 31.4 is secured, on the upper end of the axis 319a, an arm 322. The outer end of this arm is provided with a sleeve 323 in which is mounted a rod 324 which is pressed. outside the socket, on the right side of the .322 arm by a res comes out. sausage 325.
Complete exit of the rod from the socket is prevented by any suitable means and. - it comes out normally outside the arm in such an amount that its head is at a certain distance from the adjacent face of the arm. On the face of the disc, and in a position such that it is in the extension of the rod 324 when it is in contact with it, is mounted an adjustable clamping screw 326 which constitutes a stop for the head of the rod 3.24. The screw is mounted on a block 327 secured by bolts to the top face of the disc. By these means, the disc rotates, when a rotational movement is imparted to the axis 319a (see Figs. 26, 27 and 6).
The axis 319a which passes through the base B carries, at its lower end, a helical wheel 328 (fig. 6) with which a worm 329 fixed to the transverse shaft 189 engages, so that, each time this shaft rotates, the axis is rotated and the disc 314 rotates. The mechanism which controls the rotation of this shaft is shown in FIG. 6 and has already been described. It includes the coupling 305 represented more specifically in FIG. 6; this coupling always being engaged when the coupling 293 of the riveting mechanism is engaged.
The members 31, 5 and 31, 17 which act on the arms 316 and 318 are constituted by stops carried by the outer parts of the disc 314. The outer ends of the arms 316 and 318 form cleats which engage these stops. The stopper: 31.5 and the stopper 330 of the arm 316 are situated on the same circumference 331, inside a second circumference 332 on which the stopper 317 and the stopper 333 of the arm 318 are located. Therefore, each stop acts on its arm without being hampered by the other.
The helical gear 328, 3,29 which controls the axis 319a has, compared to the control gear of the advancement mechanism I, a ratio such as that 314 of the adjustment mechanism T makes only one revolution while the working wheel gradually advances one and a half turns. When the parts occupy the position shown, the stop 317 has just passed over the stopper 333 of the arm 318 and brought the shaft .301 into action to stop the riveting mechanism B, actuate the coupling 305 and stop also the adjustment mechanism T. I1 follows that the parts are at rest.
In this position, the angular position of the stopper 315 is adjusted relative to the stopper 330 of the arm 316, so that they are about 120 apart, as indicated. With adjustment disc 314 then rotating, stopper 317 makes one full revolution before re-engaging its stopper 333. Stopper 315 turns only 240 or two-thirds of a turn before engaging its stopper 330. The drilling mechanism is stopped by the disengagement of the clutch from the control shaft 297 which results therefrom and which occurs at the end of a complete revolution of the working wheel. The riveting mechanism R continues to operate for another half-turn of the workpiece.
When either of the stops 315 or 317 engages with its stopper 330 or 333, the rod 324 flexes until the pressure on the spring. coil 325 becomes large enough to suddenly project the stopper r, which is engaged over its cleat. This prevents the stops and their cleats from interfering with each other when it is desired to start the machine. Above the ta quet 317 is arranged a support roller 33-? which exerts pressure on its upper end, in order to prevent the disc 314 from flexing under the strong pressure necessary to engage the coupling connected to the riveting mechanism.
This eml) did havoc. not take place during the last riveting operation, but immediately after. following the last operation.
This adjustment mechanism T, like that of the other mechanisms, is started up and controlled in general by the control mechanism. The latter comprises both hand-operated organs and automatically-actuated organs. The main organ, among those which are actuated directly by the operator, is the pedal 3.35 (fig. 1, 2 and 4) which can control the entire operation of the machine.
The end of this pedal is on the front of the machine, near its middle and directly below the wheel locked position, so that an operator putting a wheel in position can get there without difficulty. -This pedal is articulated on a support 336 placed under the frame of the machine; it is connected by means of a connecting rod 3i) 7 (fig. 4) to the grooved control arm 338 of the control valve 339 of the air cylinder 47.
This valve controls the admission of the air flowing through the supply line and its exhaust on the two faces of the piston of the cylinder 47, through the conduits 341, 342 opening respectively at the opposite ends of the cylinder, by the via a distributor 343. Since this compressed air control device is known, it is unnecessary to describe its arrangement and operation in detail. It will suffice to notice that when the tap 339 is turned in one direction, air is admitted at one end of the cylinder and when it is turned in the other direction, air is admitted at the other end of the cylinder. cylinder.
The air admitted into the rear end of the cylinder pushes the rod 36 forward and consequently rotates the sleeve 37 and the disc 34, which causes the withdrawal of the fingers 28 and the release of a wheel which has been locked in position, as seen in fig. 7. When air is admitted to the opposite end of the cylinder, the rod 36 pulls back and the wheel which has just been placed is blocked.
This device is used to automatically engage the couplings of the various mechanisms of the machine and to actuate them. Ducts 344, 345 connected respectively to the pipes 341, 343 lead respectively to the lower and upper ends of a cylinder 346 (FIG. 4) controlled by a clutch. These conduits 344, 345 are provided with valves 346, 347 which serve to limit the arrival of air and to delay the operation of the cylinder 346, as regards the rapid and strong action of the cylinder 47 of the locking mechanism. cage G \. The cylinder 346 is disposed on the left of the machine and fixed to its front support legs.
In the interior of the cylinder moves a piston 347 (fig. 28) connected to a piston rod 348, the control rod 349 being fixed to the front of the machine by means of support plates 350. This control rod rises and falls under the action of cylinder 346 in accordance with the operations of blocking and unblocking the blocking mechanism C. Its movement is not only delayed by the narrowing of the conduits 344, 345, but also by the damper 351 which surrounds the piston rod 348, between the cylinder 346 and the rod 349 and which contains oil, which flows through the adjustable orifice 352 of its piston 353.
The couplings are controlled by the rod 349. On this rod is mounted a support 354 (fig. 29) which extends laterally and on which is articulated a locking lever 355 (fig. 30) having a cam surface. 356 which, in its reciprocating movement, encounters a cam roller 357 mounted on one side of the control lever. This ratchet lever 355 cannot turn counterclockwise because this is prevented by its stop 358 with the support and it is urged to this position by a spring 359.
But, it can rise freely by surmounting both the tension of the spring 359. In this way, when the control rod 349 is pushed upwards by the piston 346, the cam <B> 35.6 </B> comes into contact with the roller 357 and actuates the control lever, to engage the coupling of the drilling mechanism P and, with it, engage the elements 297, 300 of the control shaft, in order to engage not only the coupling of the riveting mechanism R, but also the coupling 305 of the adjustment mechanism T. On the downward stroke of the control rod 349, the cam 355 passes the roller 357 without causing any movement of the roller or of the coupling devices which are controlled by the motor, the coupling devices remaining under the control of the adjusting mechanism.
We see in fig. 1, 5, 28 and 30 that the controlled cylinder 347 also actuates the positive device designated by the reference signs 360 to 370. This mechanism constitutes the mechanism for aligning the clutches 293 and 294. It comprises arms 360, 361 and 3-62 wedged respectively on the ends of the control shafts 12-1, 68 and 1.89 of the drilling, riveting and adjustment mechanisms.
These levers are each provided with a radial face with which cleats 363, 364 and 365 respectively come into contact, formed on the inner face of levers 366 and 367 pivotally mounted on the frame of the machine, with the exception of of the cam 362 fixed on the shaft 189, the cleat roller 3i65 being in this case fixed directly to the connecting rod 368 which connects the two levers 36-6 and 367. The lever 366 of this mechanism is provided with a branch of an angled lever <B> 369 </B> which is connected by a tongue-and-groove connection to a lug 371 fixed by means of bolts on the post 349 -of the control mechanism of the coupling device.
The rollers roll on the cam in a direction opposite or opposite to the normal direction of movement of the shafts 121, 6.8 and 189 and when the control cylinder 347 causes the centering of the bar 349, the cleats 363, -364 and 365 are moved to come into contact with the cams <B> 360, </B> 3.61 and 36.2 in the opposite direction.
The relative dimensions of the parts and the relative angular positions of the cams on the ends of the three shafts, with respect to the position in which the coupling devices which they respectively control are correctly aligned for immediate engagement, are such that when this reverse movement is effected and the control rod 349 has completed its downstroke, the coupling claws are perfectly aligned throughout the machine. Brake <B> 373 </B> cooperate with this alignment mechanism of which they form part and act on each of the three shafts 121, 68 and 189 (fig. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 31), a brake acting on each of the three trees 121, 68 and 189.
These brakes consist of 374 drums, adjustable brake bands 76, a 375 brake lining and a retainer for the bands 3 r 7 by means of which they are articulated to the flat upper face. of the base B, or on the lower face, as the case may be, and are prevented from moving.
The adjustable brake bands 376, -378 make it possible to adjust the amplitude of the stroke of each of the shafts 121, - 68 and 189 and, consequently, the amplitude of the stroke of the coupling elements which are driven by their rotation and. to keep them within the reasonable limits within which it has been recognized that the alignment devices which have just been described give the best results.
In other words, the brakes prevent the very variable inertias of the various mechanisms and their friction or other very variable forces giving rise to an exaggerated stroke of any of the mechanisms and the various extended strokes. are brought to a substantially uniform amplitude and reduced to that at which the feeding mechanism 4 can effectively align the parts again by an engagement in the opposite direction from that mentioned above.
The machine's operating cycle is described as follows: When compressed air is admitted into the cylinder 47 to push its eyebolt forward, the locking mechanism C is put in the unlocking position and it is possible to easily placing a wheel in position against the locking head 15, given that the various mechanisms engaging the rim are open forwards. When air is thus admitted into the cylinder 47, it has. also been admitted into control cylinder 346.
This cylinder, on its previous return stroke, had canceled any excess stroke of shafts 121, 68 and 189 resulting from the stopping of operations performed by the adjustment mechanism T, and correctly aligned all the coupling devices again in view of their new instantaneous action.
The wheel is placed on the locking head 15, the pedal 335 is lowered, air is admitted to the opposite end of the cylinder 47, the wheel locks instantaneously in position and, immediately after, due to the narrowing of the cylinders. ducts and the inertia of the parts, the action of the cylinder 346 causes the control rod 349 to rise and, by means of the cam 355 (fig. 30), engages the coupling devices throughout the 'set of the. machine since the two sections. 297, 301 of the control shaft are coupled by this movement. At this point, the movement mechanism <B> 8 </B> supports the wheel in its. lifting position.
The drilling mechanism P is immediately put into action to drill the first hole. At the same time, the feed mechanism F acts in the manner previously indicated to bring a rivet into position 188. But there is no hole at this point, then the first hole drilled is moved about 90 degrees away. It follows that the rivet is not released but is returned to the reception position 160 to be presented to. several times, until the hole drilled first reaches the. position 188. During the drilling operation, the. wheel was mounted freely on the drilling tools and was not subjected, in any way, to tension and distortion forces of any kind then that the drilling mechanism, after that.
face 133 of the cam has come into contact with the roller 12.2 as shown in FIG. 8a, go to the. upper widened part of the slide 126, thus freeing from any retention between the walls of the slide and giving effective play to the entire drilling mechanism relative to the wheel. In other words, the whole mechanism, as a result of differences in the size of the wheel, or differences in resistance to drilling, is free to move around the transverse axis of the lower roller 34 during the movement of oscillation.
The transverse axis of the rollers 124 being disposed at a certain distance from one side of the axis of the drilling mechanism, the free movement of the drilling dies will be almost radial, if not entirely, as the slides carrying these dies. may or may not be limited to a rectilinear movement, as shown. By virtue of the combination of the inclination of the slides 126 to the right and the straightening of the pressure lever of the mechanism, the approximation of the punch 134 and the. die 89 is very fast, and it is possible to bring them quickly towards each other, whatever the great relative height of the re edges of the rim of the wheel compared to the thickness of the rim and the flange of say that to drill.
Immediately after the drilling mechanism has been disengaged from the wheel, the displacement mechanism S acts to lower the body of the wheel by causing it to oscillate about the axis of the shaft 12, from the sanded position shown in dotted in fig. 10, this position corresponding to the position in solid lines of FIG. 8, in the solid line position shown in FIG. 10, the rim of the wheel disc and the wheel rim resting, in this position, against the block 233 of the riveting mechanism R.
The riveting mechanism performs the movements of a complete riveting operation, but without any effect, firstly because there is no rivet at this time in the riveting position, the first drilling having been carried out at 180 from this position and, then, because there is a slight clearance between the rim of the disc and the rim, on the one hand, between the face of the block 2.23 and the punch 232, of somewhere else. To the. end of the riveting operation, the displacement mechanism S moves the wheel away from the fixed block 233 again and brings it back to the position indicated in dotted lines, i.e. to the drilling position of fig. . 8. At the same time, the feed mechanism I advances the wheel to bring it to the next position.
The drilling of the holes, the introduction of the rivets, the displacement of the wheel, the riveting, the relocation and the stopping are then carried out in very rapid succession, so that the advancement mechanism I advance the wheel from one position to the next until the point where it was first drilled reaches the position 188 for inserting the rivet, substantially vertically below the axis of the mechanism blocking C with no other effect on the wheel other than piercing it.
With regard to the feed mechanism F, for the effective placement of a rivet, it depends on the presence of a hole drilled in the insertion position and, subsequently, on the fact whether this drilled hole is empty or filled, and the riveting mechanism R depends entirely, in turn, on the presence or absence of a rivet in the riveting position, as regards its effective operation. effective.
At the moment when a drilled hole reaches this position, under the control of the advancement mechanism 1, the following movement of the driving mechanism F, determines the setting -lu rivet it has. retained until now, in the drilled hole and, when the mechanism is withdrawn, the latter abandons it, because the drilled hole is now in the entry position;
the rivet shank is thrown there and, instead of the rivet head being thrown against the shank 187, fig. 18, and as stopper 184 moves upward one piece while the rivet is still held by fingers 178, the ends of the gripped fingers themselves feel the inner face of rim 132 of the disc, symmetrically and open, which allows the rivet head to fall on the face of the flange and, as a result of the fact that it rests there and the spherical head of the rivet is gripped between the ends of the inclined fingers. up, those fingers don't grab it again.
The fingers, therefore, return empty to the gripping position 160 and, because they are empty, they grip a new rivet, as has been described. From this moment, until the first drilled hole has rotated 360, there is a rivet which is set by the feed mechanism F in each drilled hole which stops in the position d 'introduction 188.
But, when the first drilled hole has rotated 360 and returned to the insertion position 188, it contains a rivet, and the engagement of the shank of any rivet which arrives to be put into the mechanism. feed F with the rivet head already there, determine a lifting movement of the part 184 rather than a finger movement of the part 178, and the carried rivet is retained by the feed mechanism .
The operations of drilling and feeding the rivets continue successively without any effective operation of the riveting mechanism until the first drilled hole which is now found with the other riveted holes, has reached the riveting position. 230. It follows that, when the displacement mechanism S, at the end: of the drilling operation corresponding to this position, moves the. wheel from the position shown in dotted lines to the position in solid lines in fig. 10, the head of the rivet is introduced into the cup-shaped seat of the. matrix 264.
Immediately thereafter, the punch 232 is pressed onto the outer end of the shank, and crushes it by lowering it into the milling of the rim, energetically riveting the rim, 89 to the flange 132 of the disc. The dimensions of the parts and the lengths of the rivets are such that the riveted ends are flush with the outer surface of the rim.
During this operation, regardless of the difference in the dimensions of the various parts of the working wheel and the differences in position of the initial rivet and the resistance to riveting, the body of the wheel and, with it, the locking mechanism cage and advancement, move freely under the effect of, 5 thrusts exerted by the riveting, because it can move freely despite the fact that it tends to be pushed back by gravity against the fixed block 233.
In this way, the first hole drilled and lined with a rivet then reaches its riveting position 230 and the edging operation becomes effective. The three operations of drilling, supplying rivets and riveting are then carried out simultaneously with each movement, step by step of the wheel, until the latter has turned again. <B> 180 </B> and that the first hole drilled and filled with a rivet has again reached the drilling position. But at this moment, the drilling mechanism P ceased to function.
When the wheel has been driven 360 and just before the last phase of this movement of <B> 360 ' </B> either accomplished (or in another point of view just after the last hole in the 360 series has been drilled), the adjustment mechanism T engages its stop 315 (fig. 2; 6 and 27) with the end of the cleat 330 of the lever 316 and disengages the clutch 293 which controls this mechanism (Fig. 5).
This disengagement, when the parts of the mechanism P are brought to rest by the brake 373, occurs at a position such that it ensures the separation one d (, the other of the punch 91 and of the die 89 to moreover, the action of the device 324, 325 emma wasting the energy of the spring 325 against the resistance of the clutch 293 to disengage, projects the disc 314 and the stopper. <B> 315 </B> beyond the lever 316 when the resistance of the clutch gives way under the pressure emanated by the spring 325, thus freeing the lever 316 from the stop 315 and making it available for re-engagement of the clutch without that the stop 315 passing to. this moment brings no discomfort.
The cycle of operations continues after the movement of 360 has been exceeded, since a disc 314 of the adjusting mechanism T has progressed only 240, and it must have progressed 360 \ before the stop 317 can be returned. to its initial position as shown in FIG. 26 and, as a result of its coming into contact with the tab 333 of the lever a18, disengages the clutches 294 (fig. 5) and 305 (fig. 6) which control the operations of the other mechanisms of the machine.
Thus, the wheel is dragged step by step by the mechanism I following a new angle of <B> 180 '. </B> During the first 90 of this movement, approximately, the rivets continue to be brought by the mechanism F over the remaining quarter of the drilled holes. When the last of them has been filled, the feed mechanism effectively stops working. But he keeps trying to carry the rivets. Each rivet, as said above, is riveted when it reaches the edge position 233.
When the last of them is crushed in place by the mechanism R, the stop 317 reaches its initial position and, under the action of the energy storage device 324, 325 of the adjustment mechanism T (fig. 26) , absolutely identical to that which is combined with the stop 315 and the drilling mechanism P, simultaneously disengages the two clutches 294 and 305 and, consequently, the. The entire machine is brought to rest, each of the various remaining mechanisms having been disengaged from the energy source and brought to rest by their respective brake 373.
These mechanisms include the adjustment mechanism T itself, and when it has thus been brought to rest. the stop 317 of the adjustment mechanism is projected by the device 32.1-. 325 without being hindered by the cleat 333 of the lever 318, so that the clutches 294 and 305 are, like the clutch 293, again ready to be engaged for the beginning of the cycle of operations following the machine going. then accomplish.
By exerting pressure on the pedal 355, it is released. completed wheel of the locking mechanism C, the strong locking pressure of the plate 34 being first removed and then, when the pin 38 (fig. 7 and -35) passes from the right internal end to the middle part helical of the groove 39, the plate 34 being driven in a counterclockwise direction to disengage the locking fingers 28 from the periphery of the boss 26.
We can then remove it freely. wheel, because the mechanisms R and P were both stopped with their dies and their punches apart from each other at about the maximum spacing; their tools are both open on the front of the machine and the remaining mechanisms are behind them and behind the wheel body.
In fact, the locking mechanism C and the riveting mechanisms R and P are all housed so that not only is the locking mechanism C easily accessible for the installation and removal of the wheels, but this positioning. free space and removal are not hampered in any way by the parts of these mechanisms. There is also no protruding part of any of these mechanisms that could interfere with the freedom of movement and the safety of the operator.
It follows from the explanations given about the construction and operation of the machine, that all the operations are carried out in a cycle in which the movement of the wheel relative to the various working devices is in turn greater than, but less than. two turns of the wheel.
A cycle can be started again as soon as the previous cycle has been completed; it is only necessary for the operator to press the pedal 335 once to release the finished wheel and, through the mechanism 360 to. <B> 370 </B> Prepare the coupling devices again for the new cycle and, again, to lock in position the new wheel which has to be worked during this new cycle.
Instead of the arrangement described for the machine, it would be possible to modify the various mechanisms and the parts which they comprise in the general assembly with the sole need to adapt them to the location they are to occupy, taking into account the available space and the relative dimensions of the organs and the work piece. Thus, for example, one could employ a different type of rib feed mechanism.
It is also possible to use different forms of device for adjusting and replacing the parts in order to continue to give the machine the ability to adapt to the different dimensions and models, which it has when it is produced. as described. For example, the adjusting wedges 105 and 9.43 can take any shape, and suitable clearances can be provided in the fixed frame to allow the wedges to function freely. Likewise, the amplitude of the movements required for some or all of the parts can be varied to meet special conditions.
Thus, for example, the difference in width of the slides 126 (fig. 8 and 8a) between the bottom of the slide or more exactly of the part which is traversed by the roller 122 before it comes into contact with the face. cam <B> 1133 </B> and the upper part of the slide may vary. We only showed a slight difference. For wheels of precise dimensions. a gap of a small fraction of a centimeter is only necessary, perhaps even less than a millimeter, to secure the. ef fective freedom of the mechanism, but, for wheels set with less precision, a much larger gap may be necessary.
Up to the point where the roller 122 comes into contact with the face 133, the. slide 126 is straight, although substantially inclined towards the. right, as it was said above. The degree of inclination itself may vary.
Finally, it will be noted that the relative adjustment of the operations of the various mechanisms can be modified at will. The particular setting and the sequence of operations may also change to suit the nature of the work to be performed and the speed at which the apparatus is desired to operate. The general contours of the control cams of the various mechanisms have been clearly shown, but it must be understood that no attempt has been made to specify a specific adjustment relationship between them, since each case will require. his special relationships.
For example, for a very rapid production, the succession of operations which is indicated below seems to give advantages: operation of the drilling mechanism P, operation of the displacement mechanism S to carry the. wheel to the position of riveting, advancing, locating or stepping the wheel to bring it to the. next position, and simultaneously with this last operation to return to the drilling position performed by the displacement mechanism S.
The rivet can be fed by the mechanism S either during the intervals between drilling or during the intervals between riveting, but it is preferable that this feed takes place during the drilling intervals which are longer. It is only essential that the rivet be brought in when the wheel is stationary.
