Process for the preparation of a disazo dye. It has been found that a valuable disazo dye is obtained if the diazo compound of the l @ lonoa, zo dye of the formula
EMI0001.0007
in which the sulfonic acid group occupies the same position as the sulfonic acid group in the sulfonation of 3-nitro-4-methylbenzene-sulfonic acid- (1)
-N-methyla.nilider-available 3-nitro-4-methylbenzene-sulfonic acid- (1) - [N-methyl.anilide-sulfonic acid], combined with 1-phenylaminonaphthalene-8-eulfonic acid.
When dry, the new dye is a dark powder that dissolves in water with a deep blue color and dyes wool from an acetic acid bath in navy blue tones.
The starting material used as the monoazo dye of the above formula can be prepared in a manner known per se by, for example, diazotized 3-amino-4-methylbenzene, sulfonic acid (1) - [N-methylanilide-sulfonic acid] with 1-aminonaphthalene combined.
3-Amino-4-methylbenzene-sulfonic acid - (1) - N-methylanilide-sulfonic acid1 can also be prepared by methods known per se by, for example, 3-nitro-4-methylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid chloride with N-Me- thylaniline is converted, the 3-nitro-4-methylbenzene-sulfonic acid- (1) -N-methylanilide formed is sulfonated and the nitro group is then reduced to the amino group.
The diazotization of the starting material used as the starting material Monoa.zo dye of the formula above can be carried out, for example, by first treating a weakly alkaline solution of the monoazo dye with an excess of sodium nitrite solution, then with an excess of mineral acid, e.g. B. hydrochloric acid, added and the resulting, poorly soluble diazoazo compound isolated by filtration.
The coupling of the diazoazo compound with the 1-phenyl-aminonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid is preferably done in acidic, e.g. B. acetic acid medium.
Example: 35.6 parts of 3-amino-4-methyl-benzenesulfonic acid (1) - (N-methylanilide-x-sulfonic acid) are suspended in 200 parts of water and dissolved in a weakly alkaline manner with 4 parts of sodium hydroxide. This solution is mixed with 7 Tei len sodium nitrite, whereupon below 5 30 parts of conc. Hydrochloric acid collapsed.
The sparingly soluble diazo compound soon precipitates and is coupled as usual with 14.3 parts of 1-amino-naphthalene. The aminoazo dye is washed up with 900 parts of water, dissolved in a weakly alkaline manner with sodium hydrogen,
with a conc. Solution of 8 parts of sodium nitrite mixed with veamix and 60 parts of conc. Hydrochloric acid added.
The brown diazo compound is isolated after a few hours, washed with dilute hydrochloric acid and suspended in 200 parts of water. This pulp is: with a solution of 32 parts of 1-phenylamino-naphthalene-8-sulfonic acid sodium, 20 parts of crystalline. Sodium acetate and 4 parts of acetic acid mixed in 400 parts of water. The coupling has ended after a few hours.
At <B> 70 '</B> it is mixed with sodium carbonate until the reaction is weakly alkaline, whereupon the dye is precipitated with saturated sodium chloride solution, filtered off and dried.
