Process for the preparation of an aminotriazine-formaldehyde reaction product. It has already been proposed to produce reaction products of aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensation products by converting the ethers of aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensation products obtained in a known manner by reacting aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensation products with alcohols in acidic solution in the heat (cf. French patent no.
827014) with saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acids of the fatty acid series (see Swiss patents Nos. 228440, 231424 and 231425) or rosin (see American patents No. 2229265). In the best case, partial esterification of the acid used was achieved, probably because the heat instability of the aminotriazine methylol ethers used leads to premature gelation and hardening of the reaction mixture.
On the other hand, however, a practically sufficient esterification usually requires a relatively long reaction time at moderately high temperatures. In order to get to the pure esters, the unesterified acid therefore had to be removed using laborious procedures.
The highly etherified aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensation products which can be prepared by the process of French patent specification No. 867109 at low temperatures using considerable, preferably approximately molecular amounts of acidic catalytes (see also Helv. Ch. A., Vol. 24, page 317 E , 1941) are now characterized by excellent heat resistance compared to the products made with little acid in the heat.
The large amount of acid and the low temperature used in their production evidently cause a considerably more extensive etherification of the existing M @ ethylol groups, avoiding further condensation, so that the etherification can proceed to hexamethyl ether.
These highly etherified products are much less sensitive to heat, even in the presence of the organic acids to be esterified, and do not harden by far as quickly as the previously known hot etherified aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensation products.
In addition, heat-resistant, highly etherified aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensation products could be prepared if the latter was treated with alcohols using an excess of formaldehyde, i.e. more than is necessary to form the methylol compound of aminotriazine, in .der heat with little Amounts of acid are etherified (see Swiss Patent No. 249l21).
Under these working conditions it is surprisingly possible to obtain similarly highly etherified aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensation products, as is possible using large, preferably approximately molecular, amounts of acid at low temperatures.
It has now been found that, by using these heat-resistant, highly etherified aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensation products, it is possible to obtain technically utilizable aminotriazine-formaldehyde reaction products directly by a simple melting process.
The present patent now relates to a process for producing an aminotriazine-formaldehyde reaction product, characterized in that a hexamethylolmelamine compound, the methylol groups of which are at least for the most part methylated, is reacted with stearic acid.
The stearic acid is heated with the methyl ether of the hexamethylolmelamine, with part of the ether groups being split off as alcohol while forming an ester-like compound, while the rest of the ether groups remain in the molecule. Some formaldehyde and possibly some water also escape, while the acid number of the reaction mixture falls very quickly at the beginning and later more slowly.
Accordingly, the supply of heat is expediently graduated by carrying out the more rapid initial reaction with moderate heating and then continuing the reaction at elevated temperature until a practically neutral product is formed. It is advantageous to work in a vacuum in order to remove the volatile reaction products, in particular water, which can be harmful.
If the heat is applied for a longer period, especially at temperatures around 200 ° C., there is a slowly progressive increase in the viscosity of the reaction mixture, which can ultimately lead to complete gelling of the reaction mixture via a strongly stringy intermediate stage. The progress of the reaction is therefore advantageously controlled by determining the acid number and observing the viscosity.
The process is particularly useful when using hexamethylol hexamethyl ether. The new reaction product represents. a practically neutral, slightly yellowish, waxy mass that is soluble in the usual lacquer solvents and is used as a raw material for the manufacture of stoving lacquers or air-drying lacquers, paints, impregnating and coating masses, coating masses, printing pastes, putties and adhesives, and also as plasticizers , surfactant or water repellent, and the like can be used.
Example: 125 parts by weight of a hexamethylolmelamine hexamethyl ether obtained as described below, corresponding to about 100 parts by weight of dry substance, are fused with 150 parts by weight of stearic acid in an oil bath under vacuum at increasing temperature, so that slight foaming always occurs . The vacuum is regulated in such a way that the low-boiling components, such as traces of water and split methyl alcohol, can escape, but no acid passes over. In order to control the progress of the reaction, the acid number and the viscosity are determined.
As soon as the acid number is sufficiently low or the viscosity rises sharply, which can be clearly seen from the formation of a long thread on the sample, the reaction is interrupted.
A convenient way of working is, for example, that the reaction mixture is first heated to 100-170 for about 2 hours and then, in order to complete the reaction, i. H. in order to achieve a practically neutral product, the heating is continued for about hours at a higher temperature, preferably at about 170-200. The acid number, which was 129 in the initial reaction mixture, decreases with increasing degree of conversion and is finally only 3.1. The saponification number of the final product is 134.5, the ester number (i.e. saponification number minus acid number) 131.4.
The ilexamethylolmelamine hexamethyl ether used for the production of the above-described methylolmelamine stearic ester resin is prepared as follows: 324 parts by weight (1 mol) of finely powdered hexamethylolmelamine are stirred into 2000 parts by volume of methyl alcohol, 100 parts by volume of conc. Contains hydrochloric acid, a worn. The methylol compound is dissolved after 10 minutes.
The solution is immediately made with about 160 parts by weight of calcined soda. stirred until it reacts neutrally to litmus. The deposited salt is filtered off and the solution is evaporated to a syrup in vacuo. It is then taken up in benzene, the salt is filtered off and evaporated. A crystal-clear syrup is obtained which crystallizes on standing for a long time.
