<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Beispiel l : 126 Teile Melamin (l Mol), 214 Teile 42%iger alkoholischer Formaldehyd (3 Mol),

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Behandeln in kochendem Wasser 1'8% a. n Gewicht zunehmen.

Process for the preparation of aldehyde condensation products.
In the parent patent no. 150002 it was already stated that alcohols can be used in the condensation of aminotriazines with aldehydes. The following are mentioned as such, for example: ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, glycerine, linseed oil monoglycerine ester.
It has been shown that the alcohols can also react and that this reaction is capable of very general application.
In particular, it not only extends to all possible low molecular weight alcohols or their substitution products, including those of a resinous nature, but also the higher alcohols from C5 upwards and their derivatives, insofar as they still contain at least one free OH group, this one Reaction accessible. In addition to higher alcohols or their derivatives, lower alcohols or derivatives can also be used.
In this way it is possible to produce new compounds with the most varied of properties, which can be used in technology.
Suitable aminotriazines are triazines with at least one reactive amino group. It is also understood to mean those triazines which contain further substituents such as amino, oxy, halogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic groups, it being possible for these groups in turn to be substituted. The most important representative is the 2.4. 6-triamino-

B. listed: keto and aldehyde alcohols, such as aldol, glycolaldehyde, glyceraldehyde; the group of carbohydrates, e.g. B. glucose, cane sugar, trihexosane and their polymers, such as dextrin, starch, gum arabic, tragacanth, etc.; Oxycarboxylic acids such as tartaric acid, malic acid, ricinoleic acid, saccharic acid or their esters and the like. like.; Haloalkyl alcohols such as chloroethyl alcohol, glycol chlorohydrin, glycerol chlorohydrins, chloral hydrate; Amino alcohols such as mono-, di- and triethanolamine and the like. like
Of the polyalcohols, those in which some of the oxy groups are etherified or esterified are also of importance. The following should be mentioned: glycol monoethyl ether, glycol acetate, glycerine
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mono- and diethyl ethers, such as diethyl, also cyclohexanone glycerine (0 "', OP-cyelohexylidene glycerine),
Glycerol mono- or diesters, for example of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids. Ester resins with free hydroxyl groups of the alkyd resin type can also be used, e.g. B.
Glycerol-phthalic acid -, - adipic acid or sebaic acid esters which still contain free hydroxyl groups.
Instead of the alcohol-containing compounds themselves, it is also possible to use those which, under the conditions of the reaction, merge with alcoholic hydroxyl groups, e.g. B. acetals, esters, enolizable keto compounds, etc.
Of the groups listed above, the oxy-group-containing bodies of the carbohydrate type are particularly advantageous because of their easy accessibility in nature.
As aldehydes or aldehyde-releasing compounds are in particular formaldehyde or its polymers, such as. B. paraformaldehyde or trioxymethylene in question; however, other aliphatic aldehydes, such as. B. acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, acrolein or aromatic or heteroeyklisehe aldehydes, such as. B. benzaldehyde, furfural and. Like., usable.
The reaction components can be brought to act on one another at the same time or in any order. Each individual component can also be added in stages.
Mixtures of the individual components can of course also be used.
The proportions of the components can vary within wide limits.
Also with regard to the other condensation conditions, such as temperature, solution or.
Diluents, reaction-accelerating additives, e.g. B. acids, acid-splitting substances, bases, etc., wide variations are possible.
Both water and organic solvents can be used as solvents. The compound containing alcohol groups and serving as the condensation component can also be used in excess as the solvent.
The reaction can also be carried out in a closed vessel (autoclave). a. it is also possible to choose the reaction temperature above the boiling point of the reaction components or of the solvent.
The reaction can also in the absence of solution or. Diluents are carried out.
The properties of the new condensation products differ depending on the choice of starting materials and the reaction conditions. It is up to you to arrive at products which are characterized by colorlessness as well as excellent light and heat resistance and resistance to chemical influences. Their solubility can also vary within wide limits. There are products that are soluble in water, others dissolve in organic solvents, and still others are insoluble in all common solvents. The products are mostly resinous in nature, u. zw. They can belong to both the hardening and the non-hardening resin type. In the first case, they can usually be by known methods, such as.
B. heat, catalysts and. Like., transferred to the hardened state. The non-curing products can optionally be converted into curable products, e.g. B. by adding further amounts of aldehyde, especially formaldehyde or aldehyde-releasing agents.
Given this diversity in the properties of the products, their application is also very extensive.
The rapidly hardening products give, on their own or together with plasticizers or fillers, such as fiber materials, etc., press mixtures which can be shaped in the hot press. The pellets obtained in this way are very water and heat resistant and have good mechanical properties.
Due to their good properties, the new products are generally suitable as binders, e.g. B. for gluing wood, paper, fabrics, for the production of synthetic wood from fiber material, synthetic cork, brush putty, for fixing coloring substances, pesticides and the like. Like., on documents of all kinds.
In a similar way, fibrous webs can be impregnated and then combined in the hot press to form homogeneous laminated bodies.
Another large area of application for the new substances is in paint technology. The products can be used as paints on their own. You can also add other paints to this z. B. to make harder or more water-resistant. It is also important to use air-drying oils for the production of paints.
The new products can also be cast into molded articles in a suitable manner. This may result in crystal-clear, water-resistant bodies with good mechanical strength.
In textile chemistry, too, the new substances are capable of a wide range of applications, e.g. B. for finishing, crease-proofing, to reduce the swellability, as a thickening or stiffening agent or as a whitening agent, as an agent for the washable fixing of finishes, for the production of dyed or printed materials, etc.
The properties of the products can be further modified by containing alcohol groups instead of aminotriazines (using only the body and aldehydes, the condensation

with the simultaneous or subsequent addition of other bodies which are able to react with amino groups, alcohol groups or aldehyde groups. Examples of such additives are amines, amides, such as aniline, urea, thiourea, sulfamide, further phenols or acid chlorides and the like. a. m. Such an addition is e.g. B. useful if one of the three starting components is present in excess. In this case, mixtures of different
Condensation products arise.
When using aminotriazines, alcohols and aldehydes which, in addition to the amino group or alcohol group or aldehyde group, have other reactive groups such as halogen, carboxyl,
Carbonyl, hydroxyl, amino u. a. m., It is also possible to react these groups in whole or in part with other reactive bodies, such as acid chlorides or anhydrides, alcoholates, salts of carboxylic acids, amines and amides. For this implementation are again
Substances can be used which in turn can be used at the same time or subsequently with other reactive
Substances can be implemented.
It is also possible to use the new condensation products with artificial or natural ones
Mixing or condensing resins. Furthermore, at each stage of condensation further
Substances such as dyes, fillers, plasticizers, dehydrating or water repellent agents, etc., can be added.
The use of ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, glycerol and linseed oleic acid monoglycerol ester without the use of other alcohols does not form the subject of the present invention.
The process is illustrated by the following examples, all quantitative data relating to parts by weight.
Example 1: 126 parts of melamine (1 mol), 214 parts of 42% alcoholic formaldehyde (3 mol),
200 parts of absolute alcohol and 1 part of concentrated hydrochloric acid (about 0-01 mol) are heated to the boil for one hour. The resulting solution is neutralized with 1'3 part of 30% sodium hydroxide solution, filtered if necessary, kept at the boil for 3 hours and then cooled. A clear one emerges
Condensation solution that leaves a clear varnish when it dries up. The solution can be used alone or together with other lacquer-forming or plasticizing agents known from lacquer technology
Substances are used as paint.
If a sample is dried to constant weight in a boiling water bath in a vacuum of around 10 mm, a foamy product is created, the weight of which is 19% higher than that
Weight of the starting materials melamine and formaldehyde corresponds. Taking into account the formation of a few percent water of reaction, it can therefore be concluded that about 1 mol of ethyl alcohol has condensed in the condensation product for 1 mol of melamine.
Example 2; 126 parts of melamine (1 mol) and 300 parts of neutral 30% formaldehyde solution (3 mol) are heated together in a boiling water bath until a sample is diluted with water and there is a resin precipitation. The condensation solution is then brought to dryness in vacuo and treated at 1000 in vacuo for a further hour.
5 parts of the above product are treated with 8 parts of pure benzyl alcohol at 130. A clear solution has emerged in a short time. However, a sample of it gives off again when it cools down. After a few minutes a sample remains clear on cooling, but when benzyl alcohol is added, it precipitates. The solution is constantly evolving water and formaldehyde.
After half an hour, the viscosity has already increased considerably. A sample can be diluted cold with any amount of benzyl alcohol and with limited amounts of benzene. If it is dried in a vacuum of approximately 0.07 mm Hg at 1000 to constant weight, a crystal-clear product with a foamy structure is obtained, the weight of which is 28% higher than the amount of melamine-formaldehyde condensation product used.
If condensation continues at 1300, the condensate becomes highly viscous after another 3/4 hours and already shows a tendency to gelatinize. A sample of this product at 1000 in a vacuum up to 0.04 mm Hg to constant weight, finally dried in powder form, shows an increase in weight of 38%. For every 1 mole of melamine, almost 3/4 mole of benzyl alcohol is condensed into the new product.
Example 3: 126 parts of melamine (1 mol) are dissolved in 650 parts of neutral 30% formaldehyde solution (6.5 mol) heated to 90, held at 900 for 5 minutes and then cooled. During the cooling process, once the temperature has reached 600, 600 parts of alcohol are added and cooling is continued. The precipitated white mass is removed by suction, washed with 50% strength aqueous alcohol and dried. The product thus obtained consists for the most part of hexamethylolmelamine C, N, (CILOH),. H, 0.

creating a homogeneous solution.
If necessary, it is then filtered and then concentrated in vacuo to a thick syrup. This syrup is soluble in benzene and gasoline and other solvents.
Example 5: 120 parts of paraformaldehyde (4 mol) are in 1200 parts of allyl alcohol in the
Heat dissolved. Then 126 parts of melamine (1 mol) are added. The mixture is heated to the boil. A clear solution was created in a few minutes. This is done for 4 hours in
Maintained boiling and then evaporated at 1000, first in a vacuum of 10 mm and then in a vacuum of about 1/2 mm, until all odor has disappeared. The result is a fusible resin which is thick at 100 and solidifies in the cold. At 150 it starts to get tough.
Example 6: 126 parts of finely ground melamine (1 mol), 450 parts of 40% strength alcoholic formaldehyde solution (6 mol) and 1 part of concentrated hydrochloric acid (0-01 mol) are placed in a boiling water bath
Heated for 10-15 minutes until everything is dissolved. Then 100 parts of cetyl alcohol are added, treated for 1 to 11/2 hours in a boiling water bath and then cooled. Instead of cetyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, terpineol, wool fatty alcohols, castor oil, tartaric acid diethyl ester, diethyline (glycerine diethyl ether), glycerine monochlorohydrin, cyclohexanone glycerine (0 ", O-CyeIohexy1) can be used.
In all cases the result is a clear solution that either remains clear when it cools down or is white from liquid to paste form? becomes. Regardless of this appearance, all products become crystal clear when they are dissolved in acetone or when the volatile2 solvent is evaporated.
Example 7: 126 parts of melamine (1 mol) are condensed with 300 parts of 30% neutral formaldehyde solution (3 mol) until a cooled sample of the clear solution, diluted with water, gives rise to a resin precipitation. Then 100 parts of glycerol are added and the mixture is at the boiling point
Distilled water bath in a vacuum of 12 mm. The internal temperature rises slowly to 92 ". The
Water distillation has practically ceased, the product is still treated for 2 hours under a vacuum of approximately 12 mm and for another 1 hour under a vacuum of approximately 3-4 mm in a boiling water bath. The clear mass is poured into molds and cured at 110 for 20 hours. The result is clear, very hard and mechanically very good castings.
Instead of glycerine, other alcohols, e.g. B. glycol can be used.
Example 8: 126 parts of melamine (1 mol) are dissolved in 200 parts of 30% neutral formaldehyde solution (2 mol) in a boiling water bath and left there until a cooled sample is mixed with the same amount of water and immediately precipitates. Then 70 parts of water are in
Distilled off under vacuum, then the mass is mixed together with 55 parts of glycerine, 110 parts of wood flour and a coloring substance and kneaded on hot rollers until a fur is formed. The latter is crushed. The product obtained can be in the hot press for example at 145 during
Shape for 3 minutes and give good, hard pellets, which gain 1% in weight after lying in cold water for 24 hours and 15% in boiling water for 10 minutes.
Example 9: 126 parts of finely ground melamine (1 mol), 450 parts of 40% strength alcoholic formaldehyde solution (6 mol), alcoholic hydrochloric acid (0-1 mol) are treated in a boiling water bath until everything has dissolved. The solution is then mixed with 0 01 mol of alcoholic NaOH (solution). a) The solution is with 372 parts of ricinoleic acid monoglyceride (1 mol) and 200 parts of absolute
Alcohol added. A clear solution results, which is kept boiling for 5 hours.
If the product obtained is poured onto a base and dried in the oven, a clear, soft film is formed. b) 148 parts of phthalic anhydride (1 mol) and 92 parts of glycerol (1 mol) are held at 1600 for 22 hours. A resin with an acid number of 70 is formed. This resin is kept at the boil for 5 hours with solution A together with 200 parts of benzene and 200 parts of alcohol. The result is a clear solution that can be used as a paint. e) 92 parts of glycerol (1 mol), 148 parts of phthalic anhydride and 200 parts of alcohol are absolute in the solution. 4 and treated the resulting solution in a thin spread in the oven.
A very hard paint is also obtained in this way.
Example 10: 146 parts of adipic acid (1 mole) and 101-2 parts of glycerin (1 # 1 mole) are first
1 hour to 155-160, then slowly heated to 2300 within 11/2 hours, when the
Gel limit and an acid number of 30'7 immediately cooled and in a mixture of 100 parts each
Absolute alcohol and benzene dissolved.
63 parts of melamine (0.5 mol) are boiled with 225 parts of 40% strength alcoholic formaldehyde solution (3 mol) until an almost clear solution has formed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The two solutions are combined and boiled for 12 hours. The solution obtained dries on substrates to form a glare-clear varnish.
Example 11: 126 parts of melamine (1 mol), 126 parts of mannitol and 500 parts of 36% technical
Formaldehyde solution (6 mol) are condensed for 11/2 hours at 70 and then evaporated to dryness in vacuo. The product obtained is pressed in a hot press at 150 for 6 minutes and gives transparent pellets that are 1% when stored in cold water for 24 hours and 1% when stored for ten minutes
Treat in boiling water 1'8% a. n gain weight.
Example 12: 126 parts of melamine (1 mol), 126 parts of cane sugar, 600 parts of formaldehyde solution 30% (6 mol) neutral are treated in a boiling water bath until a sample of the clear solution, diluted with water, gives a proper resin separation. The condensation solution is dried in vacuo to give a product with a foamy structure, crushed and post-treated at 1000 until a flowability favorable for shaping in the hot press is achieved. Will the product
Pressed for 6 minutes at 1450, the result is a hard, crystal-clear molding, which increases in weight by 0.1% when stored in water for 24 hours and by 2-3% when boiled in water for ten minutes.
Used instead of sugar trihexosane (cf. Helv. Chim. Acta vol. 5, pp. 642, 1922) or soluble
Using starch and proceeding in an analogous manner, one also obtains crystal-clear pellets which gain weight after 24 hours of lying in water 0'4 or 0'5% and treated in boiling water for 10 minutes 0 # 6 or 2'6%. If the pressed pieces treated with water are subsequently stored, the new weight changes a little; the original weight is never fallen below.
Example 13: 126 parts of melamine (1 mol), 126 parts of trihexosane and 600 parts of neutral 30% strength formaldehyde solution (6 mol) are treated in a boiling water bath for 40 minutes. The condensation solution obtained is then brought to dryness in vacuo. The product obtained is clearly soluble in limited amounts of cold water.
100 parts are mixed with 6 parts of ammonium sulfate and then dissolved in 50 parts of water.
Then 2 mm thick Canadian birch tournaments are coated with it and plywood panels consisting of three layers are produced in the usual way by pressing the layered fournier for 10 minutes with a pressure of at least 4 kglem2 at 100 '. This creates high-strength bonds that are resistant to boiling water.
Example 14: 252 parts of melamine (2 mol), 400 parts of technical 30% formaldehyde solution (4 mol), 370 parts of cane sugar are heated on a water bath for 1 / .. hour. When diluted with water, a sample gives rise to a resin precipitation. The condensation solution is then kneaded with 270 parts of cellulose, dried and ground.
If the powder obtained in this way is pressed, for example, for 2 minutes at 1750, the result is pellets which, when stored in cold water for 24 hours, suffer an increase in weight of 4% and when treated in boiling water for ten minutes, an increase of 2.2%.
Example 16: 12-6 parts of melamine (0-1 mol), 60 parts of glucose (0-33 mol), 160 parts of water and 10 parts of hydrochloric acid n / l (0.01 mol) are heated to boiling for 4 hours. A cloudy solution is created which, when cooled, gives off flaky and granular precipitations. The entire mass is mixed with 60 parts of 30% formaldehyde solution (0.6 mol) and then heated to boiling again for 2 hours. The result is a very clear solution, which solidifies to a clear, highly viscous mass on cooling.
It can be diluted with water to form a slightly opalescent solution. The addition of lye creates a precipitate.
The product can e.g. B. as a thickener in various fields of industry, e.g. B.
Textile chemistry, find application.
Example 16: 126 parts of melamine (1 mol), 131 parts of paraformaldehyde (4-4 mol) are dissolved in 1250 parts of molten chloral hydrate and kept at the boil for about 2 hours until the solution has become thick. The product is then treated in a boiling water bath in a vacuum of around 10 mm until it is hard and pulverizable. Part of the powder obtained is further treated at 100 in a vacuum of 0 # 1 mm. After 10 hours the weight loss has practically stopped and the smell of chloral has almost completely disappeared. Based on the total amount, the end product obtained in this way consists of about 500 parts. The product therefore contains chloral in about twice the amount of melamine.
Example 17: 126 parts of finely powdered melamine (1 mol), 450 parts of 40% alcoholic formaldehyde solution (6 mol) and 0.01 mol of alcoholic hydrochloric acid are heated in a boiling water bath until everything has dissolved. Then 120 parts of urea (2 mol) are added and the treatment is continued for about 1/2 hour in a boiling water bath. The solution obtained is viscous in the cold. It can be thinned with alcohol and used as a varnish.
Example 18: 126 parts of melamine (1 mole), 180 parts of paraformaldehyde (6 moles) and {; (; () Parts of glycerol chlorohydrin are kept at 9W for 3 hours. Then 3000 parts of water are added to the clear solution and the mixture is stirred well. A silky resin separates out. The mixture is then cooled with ice while kneading. The resin takes a The excess, almost clear water is poured off and the resin is washed out again

kneaded with 500 parts of water. The resin separated from the washing water is then dried in vacuo at a moderate temperature and then dissolved in 900 parts of glycol monomethyl ether.
The clear solution A thus obtained contains about 30% resin and the resin itself about 11% chlorine. So more than 1 mole of glycerol chlorohydrin has entered the resin per mole of melamine.
1300 parts of solution A (containing about 1 mole of melamine) and 320 parts of dry potassium salt of linoleic acid (1 mole) dissolved in 320 parts of glycol monomethyl ether are mixed and heated to the boil. After 21/2 hours, as can be seen from the amount of potassium chloride deposited, most of the potassium soap has been converted. The mixture is kept boiling for 9 hours. After this
Time, the implementation is almost complete. The clear solution obtained is separated from the precipitated potassium chloride and can be used as a varnish.
Example 19: 202 parts of 2. 4-diamino-6-phenylamino-1. 3. 5-triazine (1 mole) and 318 parts
Benzaldehyde (3 mol) is dissolved in 250 parts of boiling butanol and kept at 1000 for 1/2 hour.
The result is a solution that remains clear in the cold and solidifies in the oven to form a hard, clear lacquer.
Example 20: 278 parts of 2-amino-4. 6-di-phenylamino-1. 3.5-triazine (1 mol), 300 parts of 40% alcoholic formaldehyde solution (4 mol) and 300 parts of absolute alcohol are kept boiling for 1/2 hour. The result is a clear solution that leaves a clear varnish when it dries.
Example 21: 200 parts of 2-amino-4-oxy-6-phenyl-1. 3. 5-triazine (1 mol) and 90 parts of paraformaldehyde (3 mol) are first kept boiling in 600 parts of glycol for about 10 minutes until a clear solution has formed, and another 1 year. Treated hour at 1500. There is one in the cold

solution (3 mol), 100 parts of hydrochloric acid n / l (0'l mol) and 1000 parts of water are heated together on a water bath. After a few minutes, resinous lumps form in the reaction mixture.
The mixture is treated with kneading in a water bath for a further y hour and then cooled. The resin solidifies in the process; it is crushed, grooved, washed out and dried.
1 part of this resin is dissolved with 0'6 parts of glycol in 50 parts of ethyl-2-butanol in the heat.
However, when it cools down, the resin precipitates again. The mixture is then kept boiling for 8 hours. After this treatment, there is no separation during cooling. The solution is clear and after evaporation leaves behind a hard, clear colored resin in the cold.
