Description

  Anti-foaming agents.

The present invention relates to a foam control agent which is characterized in that it contains, on the one hand, a sparingly water-soluble hydroxyl compound with an open chain of at least 5 carbon atoms and, on the other hand, an organic, water-soluble solvent.

Hydroxyl compounds of the type mentioned which are sparingly soluble in water include, for example, aliphatic alcohols with at least 5 carbon atoms, such as amyl alcohols, hexyl alcohols, octyl alcohols, in particular those with a branched chain, e.g. B. 2-ethyl-butanol, but preferably 2-ethyl-hexanol, in question.

Even higher molecular weight alcohols, such as oleic alcohol, are also suitable. Furthermore, as hydroxyl compounds which are difficult to dissolve in water, phenols which contain a side chain with at least 5 carbon atoms, such as amylphenols, can also be contained in the foam control agent according to the invention.

As an organic solvent which is soluble in water, the foam control agent according to the invention can e.g. B. low molecular weight a. lipatic alcohols, such as isopropyl alcohol, and also polyhydric alcohols or their ethers, such as ethylene glycol, glycerol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monoether, and also thiodiglycol. Water-soluble clays, such as acetone, are also suitable.

The foam control agent according to the invention is particularly suitable for foam control in viscose solutions. But it can also be used successfully in other foaming fluids, e.g. B. fermentation solutions, gelatin solutions, textile treatment liquors, dyeing, printing pastes, and can also be used for foam control in the paper industry.

The amount of the foam control agent according to the invention required for combating foam depends on the amount and type of foaming agent. In general, small amounts are sufficient, with viscose solutions such. B. 0.01-0.5%.

The composition of the foam control agent according to the invention can vary within wide limits. It advantageously contains roughly the same amount of water-soluble and water-sparingly soluble components.

   Example 1 :
0.02% of a mixture of equal parts of 2-ethylhexanol and isopropyl alcohol is added to a viscose solution of the usual composition intended for spinning. The addition causes the air bubbles present in the viscose solution to collapse quickly.

   Example 2:
A 0.1% aqueous solution of p-stearoylaminophenyl-dimethyl-ammonium-methylsulfate are per liter 1 cm of a mixture of equal parts p-tert. Amylphenol and isopropyl alcohol added. The addition causes a very pronounced reduction in foam formation.

   Example 3:
A viscose solution diluted with water, containing about 3.3% viscose and 2.3% sodium hydroxide, is added per liter 6.6 em3 of a mixture of equal parts of 2-ethylhexanol and ethylene glycol. The foam that forms in small amounts when air is introduced collapses after a short time, while under the same conditions a viscose solution of the same composition, but which does not contain the additive mentioned, provides a very stable foam in considerable amounts.
