Zusatz zum Patente 186388 vom 10. Juni 1903.Addendum to patent 186388 of June 10, 1903.
Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 19. Februar 1904 ab. Längste Dauer: 9. Juni 1918. Patented in the German Empire on February 19, 1904. Longest duration: June 9, 1918.
In patent 186388 is a method for the production of plastic masses from casein described, which consists in that dry Casein after moistening with a solvent in the undissolved state is mixed with hardening agents in its whole mass is brought under pressure and heat. While with the earlier display methods For plastic masses made from casein, the casein was dissolved beforehand, whereby A lengthy drying is necessary, does not find a previous solution in the process of the patent 186388, but only a swelling of the casein takes place. But it was not possible, even with the one mentioned Process to completely dispense with the use of aqueous solutions or the like. As a result, the mass produced still contained a more or less high percentage of water that led to a leads to long drying times, because it is known that colloids are very difficult to remove Water are to be freed.
The present improvement to the method is the avoidance of use of water or aqueous solutions as a swelling agent for casein. Instead of water, organic substances are used are capable of either dissolving or swelling the casein. It has been shown that that the necessary swelling of the casein is also due to such organic compounds can be achieved, which, like methyl, ethyl, amyl alcohol, an alcoholic or, such as phenols, naphthols, benzoic acid, phenolsulfonic acid, tartaric acid, an acidic Contain hydroxyl group or react alkaline, such as pyridine, aniline.
Most phenols, especially carbolic acid, cresols, naphthols, dissolve casein mild warming or at least give a very noticeable swelling. The alcohols do not seem to have any effect on casein, not even if the casein is mixed with the alcohol warmed up. A swelling effect that is sufficient to achieve plastic mass is but still achieved with the alcohols as soon as you get the casein moistened with alcohol heated during pressing. Substances such as aniline and pyridine behave in a similar way, which are also used in simple experiments apparently show no effect, while the swelling clearly emerges when pressed in the heat.
InThe swelling effect of acids, such as benzoic acid and tartaric acid, are relatively high melt, has nothing essential with regard to the execution of the process alone Meaning,, but the swelling effect is immediately usable in practice as soon as one z. B. uses these acids together with small amounts of alcohol. In
B. rohes Phenol,In this case, the alcohol acts both on its own and to lower the melting point of acids. Particular importance is attached to the fact that for the practice of the Process Mixtures of the listed substances should be used. Of course you do not need to use the listed organic compounds in their pure state. You can z. B. crude phenol,
ίο Pyridinbasen nehmen.ίο take pyridine bases.
The usual fillers can also be added to the casein in a known manner, z. B. barite, kaolin, zinc oxide. Organic fillers such as shellac, Rosin, can easily be added to the casein mass.
Das Verfahren wird z. B. wie folgt ausgeführt: The method is e.g. B. carried out as follows:
A mixture of 100 parts of casein with 10 parts of tannic acid is moistened with Share phenol and with 15 parts of ethyl alcohol or with 20 parts of ethyl alcohol and with Parts of benzoic acid or with 10 parts of amyl alcohol and with 1 to 2 parts of aniline.
