Articulation with locking device. The present invention relates to an articulation with a locking device.
According to the invention, in one of the two elements of the joint is formed a chamber containing a piston, one of which. of the ends is in contact with the surface of the other element, said chamber being intended to be connected to a source of pressurized fluid having the aim of forcing said piston against the surface facing the other element of the joint .
In a preferred embodiment, at least one of the contact surfaces of one of the elements and of the piston intended to be forced against the surface of said element under the action of the pressurized fluid, is provided with a seal in material having a high coefficient of friction which improves the engagement of said surfaces.
In the accompanying drawing, FIG. 1 shows, by way of example, in section, a support for work benches provided with an articulation according to the invention; fig. 2 shows the cross section of a variant of the joint; fig. 3 shows, in partial section, another embodiment of the joint according to the invention, and FIG. 4 shows another support provided with an articulation according to the invention. In fig. 1, the articulated support com carries a tubular foot 1, the base 1 of which is intended to be secured to a work bench by means of screws 2.
The foot 1 ends in a spherical head 3 on which is mounted, with the aid of a spherical seat, an orientable work holder 4 provided with screws 5 for mounting the work.
In the spherical head 3 is formed a cylindrical chamber 6 which opens onto the surface of the head 3 facing a region of said head which is still covered by the work holder 4; a piston 7 is mounted in the chamber 6 and a spring 8, which is housed between the bottom of the chamber 6 and the piston 7, maintains the latter in engagement with the seat surface of the work holder 4.
The duct 9 which runs through the foot 1 and opens into the chamber 6, leads to a suitable two-way robi net, controlled by hand or by means of a pedal, which makes it possible to put said duct in communication with a source of fluid under pressure or with a discharge.
When no pressure acts in the chamber 6, the work holder 4 can be given any desired orientation around the center of the spherical head 3; the work holder is held in the position in which it was brought, by the pressure applied by the piston 7 under the action of the spring 8. By making the cylinder 6 act, using the control valve, the fluid under pressure, the piston 7 is pushed with strong pressure on the seat surface of the work holder 4 and locks said work holder in the desired position. In order to release the work holder, it suffices to connect the conduit 9 and the chamber 6 to the discharge.
The described blocking device can be applied to joints of any type, with a cylindrical or spherical pivot, and also in the case of several pairs of or ganes articulated two by one. of them. In this way, each articulation is constituted by a pivot such as 3 and by an equivalent capsule of the work holder 4, said pivot and the capsule being fixed to the respective elements to be connected; the pivot or the capsule of each of the joints will be provided with a chamber 6 and a piston 7 as well as an appropriate supply of pressurized fluid.
The control of the supply of pressurized fluid to the different joints can be carried out using a single valve or else using separate valves.
In order to use for blocking in addition to the action of the head 3 also the action of the surface of the piston 7 and to avoid that by effect of the play in its chamber 6, said piston can follow the work holder 4 in a possible rotation of said work holder, the piston 7 can be engaged with the head 3 by means of an arrangement which prevents the movements of the piston which are not necessary for its operation.
An arrangement of this type is shown in FIG. 2 in which the piston 7 is provided with lateral keys 7 'which, by effect of their sliding engagement in appropriate grooves formed in the wall of its chamber 6 in the head 3, engage the udder in the necessary manner.
Fig. 3 shows another embodiment of articulation in which the udder comprises an enlarged head 7 "cut on its outside along the spherical surface of the head 3, while this head has a corresponding shape; in this case, the guide can be achieved by means of a coupling consisting of studs 10, secured, for example, to the head 7 "of the piston and which can slide into holes in the head 3.
Fig. 3 shows a support in which a flexible pipe 11 which connects, on the outside of the articulation 3, 4, the ducts 9, 9 'of two arms 1, the which end at the articulation and are respectively integral head 3 and seat 4; this arrangement is particularly advantageous in the case of supports comprising several pairs of arms articulated together by means of articulations which can be blocked in the manner described and in which the supply of the pressurized fluid to the various articulations is effected at the using conduits made in the successive arms.
In the support shown in FIG. 4, 3 indicates the head carried by the foot 1, and in the chamber 6 of which is mounted the piston 7 loaded by the spring 8; 4 is the work holder provided with attachment pins 5; the surface of the piston 7 intended to be applied to the surface of the seat of the work holder 4 is lined with a lining 12 made of: material having a high coefficient of friction.
Similarly, the surface of the seat of the work holder 4 can be provided with an annular friction lining 13 in the part opposite to that on which the piston 7, 12 normally acts. By means of this arrangement, the grip between the two elements 3 and 4 is remarkably improved under the action exerted by the piston 7 when, in the chamber 6, the pressurized fluid intended to apply the piston 7 against the hollow work holder 4 acts.
Optionally, the friction lining can be embedded in the region of the surface of the seat of the work holder on which the piston 7 normally acts or it can completely or largely occupy the internal surface of the seat of the work holder in which is housed the head 3; it can also be housed on the head 3 or else the cooperating surfaces of the head 3 and of the spherical seat of the work holder can be made or lined with a lining of material having a high coefficient of friction.
In all of the embodiments described, the locking device can be controlled using a pressurized liquid instead of compressed air or the like.
