Process for the preparation of a polymethine dye. It has been found that polymethine dyes are obtained by using p-aminoarylal, dehyde of the general formula

where R is alkyl, haloalkyl or oxyalkyl and R is hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, oxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aralkyl or aryl with the proviso
that R is only alkyl when R 1 is aryl, and in which the aryl radicals can furthermore be substituted, reacts with compounds with reactive methylene groups in a known manner.
All aldehydes are, for example, those known from Swiss Patent No. 192574 and its additives or p- (phenylmethyl) -aminobenzaldehyde, p- (p'-ethoxyphenylmethyl) -aminobenzaldehyde and the like. a.
Examples of useful compounds with reactive methylene groups are: derivatives of cyanoacetic acid, such as its esters, ethers, amides, derivatives of malonic acid, such as malononitrile, etc., pyrazolones, indolines, α-methylindoles, α- and γ-Al - pyridines,
Alkylquinolines, oxythionaphthenes, dinitrotoluene.
The new dyes have a number of noteworthy technical advantages, which could not have been foreseen, before. For example, the presence of haloalkyl residues in the dye molecule causes a strong shift in the hue towards the short wavy side of the spectrum, so that nuances are achieved that were previously not.
The presence of oxyalkyl residues also leads to a sometimes considerable improvement in the solubility of the dyes, so that particularly deep and extensive colorations are obtained. In addition, haloalkyl, oxyalkyl and aryl radicals often considerably improve the sublimation and lightfastness, especially in silk acetate dyeings.
In this way, new, very clear basic dyes are obtained which, depending on the components used, are suitable for various purposes, e.g. B. for dyeing cellulose, ether and esters, for the production of exceptionally beautiful and genuine. Paints on textiles and substrates and also as solvent and leather dyes.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of a polymethine dye. The process consists in p-butylchloroethylaminobenzaldehyde of the formula:
EMI0002.0023
with ethyl cyanoacetate. The reaction proceeds according to the following formula:
EMI0002.0027
The new dye crystallizes in greenish yellow needles from the F.
P. 111 to 113 '. Example: 24 parts of p-butylchloroethylaminobenzaldehyde, of the above formula, are mixed with about 100 parts of alcohol with 11 parts of ethyl cyanoacetate and a few drops of piperidine for a short time cooked on the reflux condenser.
After cooling, the dye crystallizes in greenish yellow needles, which after. Vacuuming and drying at 111 bis, 11.3. Melt G. The dye is insoluble in water, readily soluble in alcohol, acetone, ethyl acetate, etc.
It dyes acetate silk in bright greenish yellow tones of excellent lightfastness and sublimation fastness. The hue is greener than that of the analogous dye which can be represented from p-diethyl-aminobenzaldehyde -i ethyl cyanoacetate. The stated unities are much better.
