Process for the preparation of a hüpen dye. It has been found that valuable vat dyes are obtained if the dihydrodiantbron of the following constitution, which is easily obtained, for example, by treating anthrone with oxidizing agents, is obtained
EMI0001.0006
or lets benzoquinones act on its substitution products or derivatives in the presence or absence of solvents or diluents.
This can conveniently be done by allowing the reaction components to act on one another for several hours, for example 10-20 hours, in a solvent or diluent. Nothing can be said about the constitution of these dyes; they dissolve in concentrated sulfuric acid with a brown-violet color and color the vegetable fibers in blue tones from the red-violet vat. They can be halogenated in the customary manner, green high-quality dyes being obtained which are distinguished by very great clarity of the shade.
The subject matter of the present patent is a process for the preparation of a vat dye, which is characterized in that 1,4-benzoquinone is allowed to act on dihydrodianthron in the heat. Example: 100 parts by weight of dihydrodianthrone
EMI0002.0003
are boiled under reflux for 18 hours together with 100 parts by weight of 1,4-benzoquinone in 1000 parts by volume of chlorine benzene.
After cooling, the dark crystal slurry is suctioned off and washed with chlorobenzene until the green color disappears in the drain. For cleaning, the residue is then boiled from a mixture of equal parts of alcohol and about simple normal sodium hydroxide solution until the filtrate, which has been sucked off hot, is no longer colored brown. After washing neutral and drying, the residue is a shiny bronze, crystalline greenish-black powder. Recrystallization from high-boiling solvents such as nitrobenzene or trichlorobenzene produces green-blue needles which dissolve brown-violet in concentrated sulfuric acid.
The dye condenses cold in sodium hydroxide hydrosulfite with a red-violet color and dyes cotton blue.
