Process for the production of a vat dye. The main patent describes a process for the preparation of a vat dye, which consists in treating the dibromodibenzanthrone, which can be obtained by bioizing dibenzanthrone, with an anhydrous, chlorine-releasing metal chloride.
It has now been found that a similarly valuable dye can be obtained in an analogous manner if the tetrabromodibenzanthrone obtainable by biomizing dibenzantbrone is treated with an anhydrous, chlorine-releasing metal chloride.
Met, all chlorides particularly suitable for carrying out the process are the chlorides of iron, aluminum, antimony, mercury, etc., and mixtures thereof. Before working in the presence of additives that lower the melting point, such as alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts, or of solvents or suspending agents that do not impair the effectiveness of the metal chlorides, such as halobenzenes, halo naphthalene, benzophenone, nitrobenzene, quinolite, pyridine,
Collidine etc. Catalysts such as iodine and other metalloids or their compounds can also be used.
The dye obtained, a bromine-containing pentachlorodibenzanthrone, dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a violet color and gives blue dyeings of excellent fastness on cotton from a green-blue vat.
Example 78 parts of tetrabromodibenzanthrone are suspended in 2000 parts of trichlorobenzene, heated to 1200 ° C. with stirring, and 480 parts of anhydrous iron chloride are added at this temperature. The temperature is kept at 140-1501 ° C until a sample taken gives a pure green blue liquid solution. Then you work up in the usual way.
