Additional patent to main patent No. 12 "0480. Process for the production of a new vat dye. It has been found that a new vat dye is obtained if the 2,2'-dibenzanthronylsulfonic acid obtained by treating 2, 2'-Dibenzanthronyl with 12 0% oleum, fused with caustic potash and the compound thus obtained - probably a dioxydibenzanthrone - treated with metbylating agents.
The new dye, whose constitution probably corresponds to that of dimethoxydibenzanthrone, forms a gray-black powder that dissolves in sulfuric acid with a blue color. On cotton from a violet vat it delivers greenish gray dyeings that are characterized by valuable fastness properties. Example: In 50 parts of molten caustic potash, 10 parts of 2,2'-dibenzanthronylsulfonic acid are entered at 180 °. The temperature is then increased to 260 ° C. and the mixture is melted at 260-265 ° C. for one hour while stirring.
The cooled melt is dissolved in water, the dye is oxidized out by blowing in air, filtered off with suction and washed. When dried it forms a purple-brown powder that dissolves in sulfuric acid with a blue color. When diluted with water, blue-green flakes separate from the sulfuric acid solution. Cotton is dyed with a greenish gray from a red-violet, fluorescent vat.
5 parts of the finely divided product in 30 parts of nitrobenzene with 10 parts of sodium carbonate and 15 parts of p-toluenesulfonic acid methyl ester are then boiled on the reflux condenser for a few hours, with sodium carbonate and ester advantageously being gradually added in portions. The dye goes into solution with a blue color. After cooling, it is filtered and the residue is washed with alcohol and water.
The 2,2'-dibenzanthronylsulfonic acid is prepared as follows: 10 parts of 2,2-dibenzanthronyl are dissolved in 100 parts of fuming sulfuric acid with an anhydride content of 12%. The mixture is left to stand for a few hours at the usual temperature, this solution is then poured into saline solution, the sodium salt which has separated out is filtered off, washed neutral with sodium chloride solution and dried.
The 2,2'-dibenzanthronyl sulfonic acid forms a green-yellow powder that dissolves in sulfuric acid with an orange-red color and in water with a yellow-green color. Wool is colored green-yellow.
