Process for the production of a condensation product. The surprising observation was made that valuable, deeply colored compounds are obtained if the condensation products obtained by the action of acidic condensing agents, such as aluminum chloride, on methylenanthrone, its derivatives and substitution products, with the exception of those in which one or both Hydrogen atoms of the methylene group are replaced by a phenyl radical, obtained in the presence or absence of suitable solvents or diluents heated above the melting point to higher temperatures.
Such solvents and diluents are, for example, ethyl carbazole, β-naphthol, caustic potash, sulfuric acid. Aluminum chloride etc.
When caustic potash is used, some of the condensation products are obtained in the form of their water-soluble leuco compounds, which can be oxidized to the quinone through their alkaline solutions using common agents such as chlorine lye, hydrogen peroxide or air blown through them. If sulfuric acid is used, the sulfonic acids of dibenzoperylenequinone can be obtained with simultaneous sulfation.
When using aluminum chloride, it is not necessary to isolate the intermediate bodies described in Swiss Patent No. 155773, but you can reach the end products directly by increasing the temperature of the aluminum chloride melt, starting from methylene anthrone.
The products obtained by the present process are deeply colored and can be converted into soluble vats with hydrosulfite and alkali, from which cotton 111 real shades are dyed. The condensation products are also valuable intermediates for the manufacture of other new vat dyes. If the compounds obtainable by the present process contain sulfo groups, they can be used as acidic wool dyes.
The present patent now relates to a process for the preparation of a condensation product, characterized in that the bimolecular condensation product, produced from methylene anthrone, is heated to higher temperatures above its melting point in accordance with Swiss patent No. 155773.
The product obtained in this way forms a blue-violet powder which dissolves in the customary organic solvents with a violet color and intense red fluorescence and can be obtained from these solutions in the form of violet-blue crystals. It stains cotton from a bright blue-green vat in purple tones. It is identical to the condensation product described on page 5 of French Patent No. 601856.
Example 1: The product of the Swiss patent no. 155773 is dried well and heated to about 320 with stirring. The evolution of ethylene is observed with foaming and the reaction mass turns violet. The dye thus obtained can be purified by recrystallization from the usual organic solvents.
Example 2: 10 parts of the starting body of Example 1 are heated to boiling with stirring together with 50 parts of N-ethylearbazole. The dye formation begins immediately with the liquid turning violet. If the color no longer increases, it is cooled and the still liquid melt is mixed with an organic solvent that dissolves the ethyl carbazole and the separated dye is separated from the liquid. It is identical to that of example 1.
Example 3: 10 parts of the starting material listed in Example 1 are heated to about 280 together with 100 parts of caustic potash with stirring. When the dye has been formed, the melt is poured into water. The dye is partly in the form of the green, water-soluble potassium salt of the leuco compound and can be precipitated from the aqueous solution by blowing in air. It shows the properties listed in Example 1.
