Process for the production of vat dyes It is known to treat Bz-1-benzanthronyl-1-amino-anthraquinone or its derivatives with alkaline condensing agents (German Patent No. 212471). The vat dye obtainable by this process from Bz -1-benzanthronyl-1-amino-5-aminoanthraquinone of the following constitution
EMI0001.0007
dyes cotton from the vat in blue-gray tones.
It is also known from German Patent Nos. 520876, 522970 and 844781 that acylation of this dye with z. B. benzoyl chloride or benzoic anhydride or by treatment with such acylating agents which are derived from nuclear halogenated aryl monocarboxylic acids, such as. B. o- or p-chlorobenzoyl chloride, can produce vat dyes that dye cotton or rayon in olive tones.
However, neither the acylated nor the non-acylated dyes meet the requirements of dyeing practice, particularly in terms of their fastness to washing and soda cooking.
It has now been found that valuable new vat dyes of very good fastness to washing and soda are obtained if Bz-1-halogenobenzanthrones with 1, substituted by alkyl or aryl radicals in the Bz-2 position
5-Diaminoanthraquinones or their monoacyl compounds and the resulting benzanthronylamino-anthraquinone compounds of the formula
EMI0001.0036
wherein R is an alkyl or aryl group and R 'is an amino or acylamino group, fused with alkaline condensing agents. The vat dyes thus obtained of the formula
EMI0001.0043
can optionally be treated with acylating agents, such as.
B. with benzoyl chloride or its halogen derivatives, such as m- or p-chlorobenzoyl chloride, o- or m-fluorobenzoyl chloride, methoxybenzoyl chlorides, the chlorides of o-, m- or p-toluic acid, a- or f naphthoyl chloride or with 1 -Aminoanthraquinone 2-carboxylic acid chloride.
If the benzanthronylamino-anthraquinone compounds which contain an acylamino group in the 5-position are fused, for example with alcoholic caustic potash, in the usual manner, the acylamino group is saponified and the free amines are obtained.
If you want to avoid the saponification, you can carry out the treatment according to the information in Example 8 or 9 of French patent writing No. 697231 in such a way that the compounds with alkaline condensation agents that contain practically no hydroxyl groups, eg. B. aniline sodium or sodium alcoholate, fused at about 140 to 170 C in aniline.
The new vat dyes obtained, which contain a free amino group or an acylamino group, have excellent light fastness and very good fastness to washing and soda boiling. They therefore represent a significant technical advance compared to the known dyes mentioned above.
Example 1 14.2 parts by weight of Bz-1-bromo-Bz-2-ethylbenzanthrone with a melting point of 192-194 ° C., obtainable by brominating Bz-2-ethylbenzanthrone with bromine and sulfuryl chloride in Chloroform, 14.4 parts by weight of 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone with the addition of 0.5 parts by weight of copper powder and 13.5 parts by weight of anhydrous sodium carbonate in 200 parts by weight of nitrobenzene are heated to boiling for 10 hours.
After cooling, the crystalline Bz-2-ethyl-Bz-1-benzanthronyl-1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone is filtered off with suction and dried. It is obtained in excellent yield and melts at 309-311 "C; its solution color in concentrated sulfuric acid is purple-tinged brown.
45.0 parts by weight of the above anthrimide are introduced into a melt of 56 parts by weight of caustic potash and 135 parts by weight of monoethanolamine at 110-120 ° C. and kept at this temperature for 1 hour with stirring. The melt is then poured onto ice, the leuco compound obtained is oxidized by a stream of air, filtered off with suction and dried.
The vat dye obtained with the free amino group is a gray powder that melts at 365 C and dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a green color. It dyes cotton from the vat in gray tones with very good fastness properties. Example 2 15 parts by weight of the dye prepared according to Example 1 are heated to boiling for 5 hours in 375 parts by weight of chlorobenzene with 15 parts by weight of m-fluorobenzoyl chloride. After cooling, the dye obtained in excellent yield is filtered off with suction and dried.
Its melting point is 385 C, its solution color in concentrated sulfuric acid is green. On cotton, a khakiton with very good authenticity properties is obtained from a blue vat, in particular very good fastness to washing, soda cooking, chlorine and light.
Example 3 31.0 parts by weight of Bz-1-bromo-Bz-2-isopropylbenzanthrone with a melting point of 170-171 ° C., produced by brominating the by condensation of anthrone with α-isopropylacrolein in sulfuric acid at counter was an oxidizing agent available Bz-2-isopropylbenzanthrone from F.

The anthrimide obtained in excellent yield forms red-brown crystals that melt at 335 C and dissolve in concentrated sulfuric acid with a purple-tinged brown color.
The same anthrimide is obtained if, instead of Bz-1-bromo-Bz-2-isopropylbenzanthrone, Bz - 1 - chlorine - Bz - 2-isopropylbenzanthrone of F. 180-181- C, obtainable by chlorination of Bz-2- Isopropylbenzanthrone with sulfuryl chloride in chlorobenzene at 60-70 C, with 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone. It is advisable not to heat for 10 hours, but for around 20 hours.
By alkaline fusing of this anthrimide as described in Example 1, a vat dye is obtained which melts at 384-385 ° C. with puffing. Its solution color in concentrated sulfuric acid is green. On cotton or artificial silk, a blue vat gives a gray with remarkably good fastness to chlorine and very good fastness to washing, soda and light.
Example 4 14 parts by weight of the gray vat dye prepared according to Example 3 are heated to boiling for 5 hours in 360 parts by weight of chlorobenzene with 14 parts by volume of m-chlorobenzoyl chloride. It is allowed to cool and the crystalline dye thus obtained is filtered off with suction. It melts at 375-376 C. Its solution color in concentrated sulfuric acid is green. It dyes cotton from a gray-blue vat in a yellowish khakiton after hanging. The dyeings have very good fastness properties, in particular very good light, wash, solo boil and chlorine fastness.
If o-methoxybenzoyl chloride is used as the acylating component instead of the m-chlorobenzoyl chloride, a vat dye is obtained which also contains vegetable fibers in a khakitone with very good fastness properties, in particular very good detergent, soda, chlorine and Color fastness to light.
If 1-amino-anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride is used as the acylation component, a brown vat dye with similarly good properties is obtained.
Example 5 19.1. Parts by weight of Bz-1-bromo-Bz-2-phenylbenz-anthrone are mixed with 17.1 parts by weight of 1-amino-5-benzoylamino-anthraquinone in 120 parts by weight of naphthalene with the addition of 0.3 parts by weight of copper oxide and 8 parts by weight of anhydrous sodium carbonate for 12 hours heated to 215-220 C. At about 80 ° C., 120 parts by weight of toluene are added. The precipitate that has precipitated out after cooling is suctioned off and freed from naphthalene by steam distillation.
The anthrimide obtained melts after recrystallization from nitrobenzene at 327-329 C.
5 parts by weight of this anthrimide are introduced at 90 ° C. into a melt of 6.25 parts by weight of caustic potash and 7.5 parts by weight of ethanolamine and kept at this temperature for 2 hours with stirring. The melt is then poured onto ice, oxidized with air and suctioned Its solution color in concentrated sulfuric acid is green, and gray dyeings with very good fastness properties are obtained from a blue vat on cotton.
Example 6 3.7 parts by weight of the dyestuff produced according to Example 5 are heated to boiling for 5 hours in 150 parts by weight of chlorobenzene with 6.8 parts by weight of benzoyl chloride and in the usual manner worked. The dye obtained dyes cotton from a navy blue vat after hanging in olive tones. The colors have excellent light, washing, soda boiling and chlorine fastness.
Example 7 8.08 parts by weight of Bz-1-bromo-Bz-2-methylbenzanthrone with a melting point of 230-231 ° C., obtainable by bromination of Bz-2-methylbenzanthrone, with 8.55 parts by weight 1-Amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone, 0.3 part by weight of copper powder and 8 parts by weight of anhydrous sodium carbonate in 120 parts by weight of nitrobenzene heated to boiling for 10 hours.
After cooling, the anthrimide formed is filtered off with suction, washed with a little chlorobenzene and the excess sodium carbonate is dissolved out with water. The Bz-2-methyl-Bz-1-benzanthronyl-1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone is obtained in excellent yield; it melts at 352 ° C. with foaming. Its solution color in concentrated sulfuric acid is purple.
10 parts by weight of the above compound are introduced into a melt of 12.5 parts by weight of caustic potash and 30 parts by weight of ethanolamine at 110-120 C and stirred at 110-120 C for 1 hour. If a sample shows no more yellow crystals after blowing out with air under the microscope, the melt is poured onto ice, the leuco compound is oxidized by a stream of air, filtered off with suction, washed neutral and dried. The obtained dye with the free amino group is a gray-black powder.
In order to keep the product completely pure, it is dissolved in 20 times the amount of concentrated sulfuric acid and the green colored solution is reduced to 75% sulfuric acid by adding 50% sulfuric acid at 20 ° C. The dyestuff, which has separated out in crystalline form, is filtered off with suction, washed neutral with water and dried.
7.95 parts by weight of the dyestuff purified in this way are heated to boiling for 5 hours in 200 parts by weight of chlorobenzene with 8 parts by weight of benzoyl chloride. You let it cool down and work up in the usual way. The dye obtained in excellent yield dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a green color. From gray-blue vat it dyes cotton in greenish olive tones, which are distinguished by excellent fastness properties, in particular very good fastness to light, washing and chlorine.

The Bz-2-n-pentyl-Bz-1-benzanthronyl-1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone obtained in good yield is red-brown crystals with a melting point of 280-281 C.
The solution color in concentrated sulfuric acid is red-brown and turns violet when paraformaldehyde is added.
9 parts by weight of the above anthrimide are introduced into a melt of 11.5 parts by weight of caustic potash in 27 parts by weight of ethanolamine at 110-120 C and stirred at this temperature for 1 hour. The melt is worked up as described in Example 7 and a gray-black powder is obtained which dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a green color and dyes the vegetable fiber from the violet vat in real gray tones.
5 parts by weight of the dye obtained who heated to boiling for 5 hours in 125 parts by weight of chlorobenzene with 5 parts by weight of m-fluorobenzoyl chloride, allowed to cool and filtered off with suction. The dye obtained in very good yield is fine, olive-colored needles that dissolve in concentrated sulfuric acid with a green color. It dyes the vegetable fiber from the gray-blue vat in greenish olive tones with good fastness properties.
The Bz-1-chloro-Bz-2-n-pentylbenzanthrone 1ä can be prepared analogously to the information in Example 3 by chlorination of the Bz-2-n-pentylbenzanthrone with a melting point of 90 ° C obtainable by condensation of anthrone with an-pentylacrolein . a-n-pentylacrolein is obtainable according to the method described in German patent specification no. 875194 .
