Direction indicator device polishing bicycles circulating on roads. This invention relates to a direction change indicator device for vehicles traveling on roads, for example for motor vehicles, trucks and the like.
Among the direction indicators hitherto employed on mobile cars, some consist of parts in the form of arrows placed in boxes containing electric lamps, arranged on each mudguard or stone cutter, at the rear. 'front and rear of the vehicle frame. These members protrude from one side or the other of the vehicle and are illuminated by the driver in the direction in which he wishes to turn.
This arrangement, while being efficient, necessitates the establishment of several additional electrical circuits in the vehicle and, moreover, - the disadvantage of not offering the driver an indication allowing him to make sure that the lamps are on when needed.
In the present; device, the driver will have before his eyes a single indicator of a very simple and effective kind, and which will indicate the movements which will be carried out by the driver to those walking in front of or behind the vehicle moving on a road.
An embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing: FIG. 1 -is a perspective view of an automobile provided with the indicator device; Fig. 2 shows, on a larger scale, the method of fixing the device to the windshield of an automobile; Fig. 3 shows, on a larger scale, in extreme elevation respectively in section part of the device; The, fig. 4 is a view, on a larger scale, in perspective, of a detail, and FIG. 5 shows another detail.
The device comprises a box 6 made of light material and mounted by its lower part in a pivoting manner with a ball bearing, on a rod 7. The box is designed to oscillate on the rod 7, firmly fixed by means of a clamp 11 to a console 8. This console is fixed, as shown in FIG. \ ?, on the windshield support 9 near the steering wheel 10. The clamp 11 holding the box 6 on the console b can have its position adjusted along this console, as desired.
The upper part of the , box. is fitted at the rear and at. the front, of a glazed panel 12, preferably of red glass. An index is traced on each panel, in the example drawn the shape of a hand, the color of which contrasts with that of the panel. Inside the box 6 are arranged incandescent lamps 13, the electric current reaching these lamps by conducting wires ?? starting from a battery of accumulators not drawn and entering the box 6 to supply the said lamps :.
In the circuit of the lamps is inserted a switch to. mercury 14. This Il switch is arranged so that the lamps 13 will burn out when the box is tilted. in the direction of the arrow (fig. 2) at an angle of approximately 15.
The lower part of the box 6 facing the driver is fitted with a mirror to effectively inform said driver while the vehicle is in motion.
To rotate the box 6 around the rod 7, a hand lever 15 is used which moves on a segment 16 mounted on the support of the steering wheel, and provided with notches of which only two, 20 and 21 are shown in drawing. The lever 15 is seen from a stop 19 being under the influence of a spring which tends to keep the stop in contact with the segment 16. A control wire 23 is fixed on the lever 15 and passes to , through a flexible pipe 18 fixed, on the one hand, on the segment 16 and, on the other hand, by means of a connector 17 in an adjustable manner on the rod 7.
The wire 23 is brought through the end of the tuv.au 1s to a place of attachment on the box 6, this place being hole above the rod 7.
The operation of the device described is as follows: As long as the lever 1.5 is in the position shown at. the. fig. 2, the stop 19 engages in the notch 20 of the segment 16. The wire 3 maintains the box 6 in the vertical position, dan: which it rests for example against a stop not shown preventing 1a. box # to turn in the opposite direction to the arrow shown in fig. ?.
When the driver of the vehicle wishes to move in a place where the traffic is quite intense, he can indicate his intention to those who find themselves:
forward as well as behind, moving the lever 15 on the segment, whereby the wire 23 slackens and the box 6, under the influence of its own weight, rotates in the direction of the arrow (fi.?) until the stop of the lever 15 'engages in another notch called segment 16. The ringed drawing shows the steering wheel 10 placed at right of the car, assuming that the traffic coming from behind is on the driver's right side.
When the lever 1.5 and the gearbox 18 have reached the new position, the indexes of the panels indicate in which direction the vehicle wants to turn.
When the vehicle has finished turning, the box 6 is returned to its vertical position by the wire 23, returning the lever 15 to its initial position relative to the segment. The stopper engages the notch 20 to hold the box in the vertical position.
The indicating device described can be used very effieaeenient on motor vehicles, with the actuation of the positive device being closed from the driver's seat.
Instead of being actuated by hand, the indicating device could also be actuated by the foot or electrically.
