La fig. 1 est une vue en élévation repré sentant une voiture munie d'un dispositif con forme à la présente invention; La fig. 2 est une coupe longitudinale mon trant le phare éclairant vers l'avant et muni de son faisceau d'écrans verticaux; La fig. â représente une variante d'exé cution d'un tel phare; Les fig. 4 et 5 montrent par une vue en plan et une vue en élévation agrandie une variante de montage du projecteur éclairant l'avant du véhicule; La fig. 6 représente une forme d'exécu tion dans laquelle un même projecteur éclaire vers l'avant et vers l'arrière;
Lighting device for vehicles. The powerful headlights with which current motor cars are equipped have the great disadvantage of dazzling people whose eyes are in their light field and at. short distance; this sometimes results in very serious accidents, especially when two cars pass each other.
The present invention relates to a positive lighting device for vehicles which overcomes this drawback.
According to the invention, outside the vehicle are placed light devices which send light beams to this vehicle so as to. enlighten it brightly.
In order to make the outer surface more visible, it is advantageous to use a clear and shiny paint for the bodywork and in addition, it is possible to place, from place to place, reflective bodies serving to yellow the visible contour of the vehicle.
Screens are interposed between the headlamps and the vehicle if necessary to protect the occupants against the light rays emanating from these headlamps.
One or more headlights directed towards the front may also be provided to illuminate the region of the road where the vehicle is going to enter, but to avoid causing dazzling, it is possible to arrange, in front of each of these last headlights, a beam of parallel or slightly divergent screens, so as to stop the rays which deviate too much from the. axial direction.
The object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view showing a car provided with a device according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section showing the headlight illuminating forwards and fitted with its beam of vertical screens; Fig. â represents an alternative embodiment of such a lighthouse; Figs. 4 and 5 show by a plan view and an enlarged elevation view an alternative mounting of the headlight illuminating the front of the vehicle; Fig. 6 shows an embodiment in which the same headlight illuminates forward and backward;
Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of such a lighthouse.
The device shown in fig. 1 comprises, in front: of the car a headlight 1 facing the rear, so as to illuminate the entire front part of the vehicle.
The bodywork is preferably covered with a brightly colored paint of a reflective nature, so that the vehicle appears very brightly lit.
Reflective bodies, formed for example by glass balls 2, can be placed on the bodywork so as to mark out the apparent contour of the car. These balls can be replaced by prisms or mirrors reflecting the light which they receive or by reflective bands suitably placed on the bodywork.
Ti is important to avoid that the rays emitted by the projector 1 can dazzle the driver, and if necessary, a screen 3 placed in such a way that the conductor is in the shadow cone thus created.
It is advantageous for the screen 3 to adopt a surface that is homothetic to the front window of the car with respect to the projector lamp 1.
Another screen, not shown, could moreover be added to the projector 1 in order to externally limit the light beam emanating from this projector and stop the too divergent rays.
In some cases, the screens may also consist of parts of the car, for example the hood, the fenders, etc.
At the rear, there is a projector 5, the light rays of which are directed towards the middle part of the car and can in particular illuminate reflective bodies 6 placed on the bodywork. A screen 7 located in front of the projector 5 and homothetic of the rear window with respect to the light source has the effect of preventing the light rays from the projector 5 from dazzling a person looking through this window.
One could also use for the lighting of blades turned towards the exterior surface of the car, these lamps being, for example, arranged either in the wings as seen at 29 in FIG. 1, either on the steps or in any other place.
It can be seen that, thanks to the various lamps turned towards the car, the latter is bathed in light and appears very clearly to people traveling on the same road, either in the same direction or in the opposite direction.
In addition, it is necessary to illuminate the area located in front of the vehicle, and, for this purpose, provision has been made according to FIG. 1 a lighthouse whose light source 10 is located at the focus of a lens 11, in front of which is placed a sleeve 14 partitioned by a bundle, u of vertical screens 12 visible in FIG. 2.
As these screens stop the rays which deviate significantly from the longitudinal axis, any risk of dazzling is eliminated for people walking on the road in the opposite direction of the car and keeping their right, as prescribed. in France and in a large number of countries.
In order to illuminate the low sides of the road, we can also give these screens a slightly divergent arrangement to the right, as shown in fig. 3, the left screen always being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the car.
Of course, when the car is intended to travel in a country, vehicles are ordered to keep to their left, the screens must be arranged so as to diverge slightly to the left.
To make it possible to vary the inclination of the headlight assembly and of the screens 1 ?, an adjusting device is provided, for example consisting of a nut 13 engaged with two screws with opposite threads.
The light source 10 instead of being a point can be arranged along a horizontal straight line, the lens 11 being in this case of cylindrical shape and the sleeve 14 being flattened horizontally.
We could even have a lighting system between the roof of the body and an additional roof placed a little above.
Instead of being arranged behind the bumper, the headlight 1 illuminating the front of the vehicle can receive the arrangement shown in fig. 4 and 5.
The projector 1 is in this case mounted on a bent rod 31 whose vertical branch can rotate in a tube 32 fixed to the bumper 33 and is returned by a spring 34 to the position of use shown in FIG. 1. A cleat 35 abutting against the tube 32, limits the movement of the arm 31.
Thanks to. this device, .if the projector 1 encounters an obstacle, the arm 31 pivots rearwardly and the projector is placed under the bumper 33.
A locking member, not shown, is preferably provided on the bumper, to immobilize the headlight in its rear position when not in use.
It is also possible to replace by a single headlight 15 the two headlights shown at 1 and 10 in FIG. 1. Such a device is shown in fig. 7. The bulb 16 of the headlight thus produced illuminates at the. both backward and forward. The rays directed towards the front are transformed into a parallel beam by a lens 17 in front of which are arranged screens 18, which affect a parallel arrangement or which diverge slightly to the right, as has been shown in fig. . 4.
To prevent the screens 18 located in front of the bumper 19 risk being damaged in the event of an impact, the whole of the headlight and the screens were mounted on a console 20 capable of pivoting about a horizontal axis. 21 on a support 22, a spring not shown tending to. return the headlight to its position of use. A damping buffer 23 is also provided at the front of the screens 18 and in the event that this buffer encounters an obstacle, the assembly of the headlight and the screens 1.8 is erased by pivoting around the axis 21.
Whatever the embodiment adopted, the invention constitutes a rational solution to the problem of the lighting of cars, since these cars are made very clearly visible to third parties and, on the other hand, the headlights can not cause any glare.
Finally, the devices shown which essentially consist > in strongly illuminating the. central part of the vehicle and to make its apparent outline very visible, can be applied not only to motor cars, but also to all other vehicles, and in particular to ships and aircraft.
