Description

Process for the preparation of a bismuth salt of a mercurized, organic compound containing an acid residue. It has been found that a therapeutically important compound containing both mercury and bismuth can be obtained by combining mercury salicylic acid in the form of its alkali metal salts with bismuth salts.

The content of mercury and bismuth varies depending on the amount of the components used. The new compound is characterized by a powerful effect on syphilis and is less toxic than should be expected from its mercurated compound content.

Example: 10 g of mercury salicylic acid are dissolved in 100 cc of water with the addition of sodium hydroxide solution and combined with a solution of 9.5 g of bismuth chloride in 10 cc of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 0 cc of water white, voluminous precipitate which, after drying, contains 33.9% mercury and 36% bismuth.

PATENT CLAIM: Process for the preparation of the WiSmut salt of mercury isalicylic acid, which consists of bringing 1Vlerkurisalicylic acid in the form of its alkali salts together with bismuth salts. The mercury and bismuth content of the preparation varies depending on the amount of components used. The product described in the example is precipitated as a white voluminous precipitate, contains 33.9% mercury and 36% bismuth after drying and is characterized by a powerful effect on syphilis and is less toxic than should be expected based on its mercurated compound content .
