A invenção refere-se a inibidores seletivos MMP-13 que são derivados do ácido isoftálico da fórmula onde: R^ 1^, R^ 2^ e R^ 3^ são independentemente hidrogênio, halo, hidróxi, C~ 1~-C~ 6~alquila, C~ 1~-C~ 6~alcóxi, C~ 2~-C~ 6~alquenila, C~ 2~-C~ 6~alquinila, NO~ 2~, NR^ 4^R^ 5^, CN ou CF~ 3~; E é independentemente O ou S; A e B são independentemente OR^ 4^ ou NR^ 4~ R^ 5^; cada R^ 4^ e R^ 5^ são independentemente H, C~ 1~-C~ 6~alquila, C~ 1~-C~ 6~alquenila, C~ 2~-C~ 6~alquinila, (CH~ 2~)~ n~arila, (CH~ 2~)~ n~cicloalquila, (CH~ 2~)~ n~heteroarila, ou R^ 4^ e R^ 5^ quando juntamente com nitrogênio ao qual estão ligados completam um anel de 3- a 8-membros, contendo opcionalmente um heteroátomo selecionado de 0, S ou NH, e opcionalmente substituído ou não-substituído; n é de O a 6; ou um seu sal farmaceuticamente aceitável.
