Abstract

Cobalt alloys.. G7-. Have improved corrosion resistant properties, abrasion resistance, and adequate workability and thermal shock resistance compared with all known Cobalt alloys. They comprise Cr 26-32% wt., Mo 8-15% wt, Cu 1.5 - 4.5% wt., Cu 0.10% max. and with Mn, Si, Fe and Ni comprise 3% total wt. and remainder Co. They are strengthened by a heat treatment lasting two hours at 2250 degrees F. and subsequent fast cooling. The carbon contents must be such as to prevent carbide formation but enough in relation to the Mn-Co contents to obtain a cast hardness of 270 Brinell: this means that at the higher, Mo-Cr contents range carbon must not be present in excess of .3%. Since Mo is added as an alloying element to combine with the other metallic constituents rather than a carbide former it cannot be replaced by tungsten.
