superior functional. Instead of a single starting substance, it is also possible to use mixtures of different substances.
It is thus often advantageous to use a mixture of formaldehyde and acrolein.
The condensation takes place, generally in one stage, under acidic conditions and in aqueous solution.
The aldehyde is advantageously added dropwise to the mixture of ethylene urea and the higher functional compound at a temperature of between 20 and 50 ° C., advantageously between 30 and 40 ° C., after which it is then stirred for. one denial hour to two hours at a higher temperature of approximately 10 C. However, it is also possible to form beforehand in a first stage, in a neutral or weakly alkaline medium, the methylol compound or the dimethylol compound, after which the latter is then condensed in an acidic medium in a second stage. In general, the residual solution is then neutralized, heated and then freed by hot filtration of any constituents which may not be dissolved.

However, non-uniform tank dyes can also be subsequently leveled with the aid of the condensation products in an alkali bath containing hydrosulphite.
The invention is described in more detail in the non-limiting examples which follow, in which the temperatures are indicated in centigrade descriptions.
