Abstract
Water-soluble condensation products are obtained by reacting 1 mole of ethylene urea, 0.7 to 1.8 moles of a C1- 3 monoaldehyde and 0.01 to 0.8 moles of urea, acetylene diurea or dicyandiamide, reaction being effected in aqueous solution with at least the final stage under acid conditions. Specified monoaldehydes are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein and mixtures thereof. The condensation may be effected entirely under acid conditions or the methylol compound may be preformed in a neutral or weakly alkaline medium followed by acid condensation. In examples, ethylene urea is condensed with formaldehyde or acetaldehyde and acetylene diurea, urea with or without acrolein, and dicyandiamide. The products are suitable as levelling agents for dyeing fabrics (see Division D1).ALSO:Water-soluble condensates of 1 mole of ethylene urea 0.7 to 1.8 moles of a C1-3 monoaldehyde and 0.01 to 0.8 moles of urea, acetylene dimea or dicyandiamide, at least the final condensation stage having been effected in an acid medium (see Division C3) are used as levelling agents in dyeing fabrics. They may be added to the dyebath or incorporated in an alkaline bath containing hydrosulphite for the subsequent levelling of patchy vat dyeings. In an example cotton satin is dyed in a bath of sodium hydroxide, sodium hydrosulphite, a dye obtained by sulphur melting from methylbenzanthrone and various condensates of ethylene urea, formaldehyde or acetaldehyde, and acetylene diurea, urea with or without acrolein, or dicyandiamide.
