<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a process and a device for the sudden cooling of hot gases, in particular hot gases resulting from reactions of thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons into acetylene and / or olefins.
To prepare acetylene and / or olefins from more saturated hydrocarbons, the latter, in the gaseous or vaporized state, are brought to high temperature. It is important, however, in order to obtain high yields of unsaturated hydrocarbons to control the heating time and to keep it within very narrow limits.
This is how it was found that in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the case of methane pyrolysis, the yield of ethylene is almost doubled when the reaction time, at 1400 ° C., goes from 0.014 to 0.0023 seconds, and the yield of acetylene increases by about 8% when the pyrolysis takes 0 , 0029 seconds instead of 0.0085 seconds (English patent? 09.035), At these high temperatures, the pyrolysis reaction continues, in fact, and exceeds the stage of formation of unsaturated hydrocarbons with production, in particular, of carbon, d hydrogen, etc.
The pyrolysis time is limited by suddenly cooling the gases formed to a temperature as low as 500 to 600 ° C., a temperature at which these unsaturated hydrocarbons are more stable.
Numerous processes have been proposed for this purpose, in particular the transverse spraying of cold water into the pyrolysis gases. This method is economically the most advantageous, but it does not always give complete satisfaction when applied on an industrial scale.
In fact, as a result of an undesirable penetration of water into the pyrolysis zone, there occurs a premature partial cooling of the evolving gases, to the detriment of the yield of unsaturated hydrocarbons.
Thus, in particular with a central sprayer, located in the axis of the pyrolysis chamber and at the end of the latter, the projected water (the force of which must be sufficient to avoid an exaggerated deviation of the (water screen by the gas current) gives rise to the formation of jets squirting in all directions at the points of impact with the wall of the furnace. On the other hand, countercurrent jets, distributed by sprayers placed at the periphery of the pyrolysis zone, give their meeting point significant eddies, part of which is directed towards the pyrolysis zone, under a shape varying from water cone to mist of droplets depending on whether the spraying is carried out transversely or in a direction slightly inclined with respect to the direction of flow of the gas stream.
With the devices used until now, the eddies are not suppressed, moreover, if this spraying is combined

to the introduction of water through orifices made along the wall of the pyrolysis zone or to a flow of water along the end of this zone.
According to the present invention, these drawbacks are overcome by means of a simple and original method and device making it possible to obtain, transversely to the direction of flow of the hot gases, a solid sheet of water, with a uniform upper surface. gene and uniform, as a result of a first layer of water, formed of jets directed towards the longitudinal axis of the pyrolysis zone, coming from sprayers placed at the end of this pyrolysis zone, and d a second layer of water, spreading over the previous one.
Such a result is obtained by the combination of certain conditions which it is necessary to observe for this method of abrupt cooling of the pyrolysis gases to be fully effective.
For water sprayers, these conditions are as follows in the case of a vertical furnace with a circular pyrolysis chamber: 1) opening slit for spraying water in a thin blade, towards the axis of the zone reaction with an opening angle of about 60.
2) arrangement along the contour of a frustoconical crown of diameter greater than that of the pyrolysis chamber.
3) inclination of this crown at an angle of 10 to 15 with respect to the axis of the furnace.
4) inclination of each of the sprayers, at an angle of 2 to 5 with respect to the horizontal.
These conditions being met, the water jets, issued under pressure from each of the sprayers, form a fan, overlap in the horizontal plane and give a full and stable layer of water, slightly conical downwards and from which emerges , towards the bottom, a cone of water formed by the re-agglomeration of the different blades and, towards the top, a very light mist of droplets of water practically without adverse influence on the pyrolysis reaction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
These results are further improved when a second layer is spread over this first layer of water which, by an effect analogous to shearing, prevents the formation of this mist.
Most conveniently, this second layer comes from the water screen protecting the internal face of the wall of the pyrolysis zone against carbon deposits.
The appended figures illustrate, without limiting it, the present invention applied to the partial combustion of hydrocarbons into acetylene.
FIG. I represents, in section, a circular furnace for carrying out this partial combustion, with the device for abrupt cooling of the pyrolysis gases.
Figure II is the development of part of the crown along which the sprayers are arranged.
Figure III is a cross section of the furnace of Figure I, along X - Y.

The circular oven comprises a distributor 1, in the form of a refractory cylindrical disc, crossed by the parallel channels 2 for distributing the reaction gas mixture into the combustion chamber, delimited by the wall 4. Along its outer contour, the distributor 1 is provided with a hollow metal ring 5, in which an opening 6 in the form of a slot is arranged.
At the end of the combustion chamber, the sprayers 7 are arranged along the contour of a frustoconical ring 8, with an average diameter greater than that of the combustion zone, and inclined at an angle of 15 relative to the axis of the pyrolysis furnace. As shown in Figure II, the injection slots of these. Sprayers are slightly tilted, at an angle of 2, from the horizontal.
Via channels 2, the preheated mixture of hydrocarbon and oxygen is introduced into combustion zone 3, where it ignites. Through the hollow metal ring 5 and the slot 6, pressurized water is injected along the wall 4 of the combustion zone.
On the other hand, water is sprayed through the ejectors 7 in the form of thin blades, having an opening angle of 60 and slightly
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
inclined in the direction of flow of the pyrolysis gases. Thanks to a judicious choice of the number of sprayers, depending in particular on the diameter of the pyrolysis zone and the distance between the wall and the crown 7, the layers of water overlap and form a full and homogeneous layer, the section of which is at least equal to that of the pyrolysis zone, as shown in FIG. III. On this layer, the water of the protective screen of the wall 4 is spread, and one thus obtains, as the result of these two layers, a stable sheet, with a uniform upper surface, of maximum efficiency.
By applying this method of abrupt cooling of pyrolysis gas, one obtained, during the partial combustion of methane. a pyrolysis gas having an acetylene content of 8.4% (calculated on the dry gas), while, by using other methods and cooling devices, known until now, the content was only 8% .
