<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
1 ) un brûleur mélangeur d'hydrocarbure et d'oxygène;
2 ) une chambre de réaction comprenant une paroi annulai- re en mouvement en un liquide, formé par un orifice annulaire ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The present invention relates to an improved method and apparatus for converting hydrocarbons by partial oxidation into other gases containing oxygen and hydrogen.
The preferred technique for the transformation of light hydrocarbon fractions, including acetylene, by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons such as methane, ethane, natural gases, light distillates, etc., with oxygen or gases containing oxygen, such as for example air, consists in separately heating the hydrocarbons and the oxygen, and in subjecting them, after mixing, to a reaction with the formation of a blank.
Such oxidation, however, only takes place at an elevated temperature which promotes a wide variety of side reactions. In addition,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the very hot flame produces very hot radiation towards the mixing device and the walls of the combustion chamber and, without proper device and operations, the device can be damaged or destroyed. As, moreover, the gases are, as a result of their prior heating, in states of great reactivity, it is necessary to effect the intimate mixing of the gases in the shortest possible time in order to obtain a controllable reaction. in the combustion zone.
Although a number of techniques are known which allow these conditions to be met in small-scale operations, considerable difficulties are encountered in working on a large scale.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved reactor for the production of light hydrocarbons including acetylene, by partial oxidation of hydrocarbons and more particularly from gaseous or vapor hydrocarbons with higher yields. higher than so far.
The invention relates firstly to a process for the conversion of hydrocarbons by partial oxidation of these hydrocarbons, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in a reaction zone limited by a wall of a relatively cold liquid, in motion, in which the reaction is carried out. maintains this zone at a temperature necessary for the effective conversion of the hydrocarbons into other gases containing carbon and hydrogen, and the conversion gases are deflected within this zone to bring them into contact with said wall liquid to be cooled rapidly to a temperature at which there is noticeably more conversion.
The invention further relates to a reactor or combustion chamber in which the hydrocarbons are reacted with oxygen to form lighter fractions such as acetylene, and in which the high temperature which radiates from the gas mixture does not will damage or destroy the apparatus in the mixing zone, apparatus characterized in that it comprises a zone of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
reaction limited by a wall of a relatively cold moving liquid, a burner-mixer with hydrocarbons and oxygen.
inside this zone to effect the partial oxidation of the hydrocarbons at relatively high temperatures, and means for intercepting the flow of the moving liquid which forms said reaction zone and the gas flow which is contained therein and for supplying said gas product in intimate contact with said liquid.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description below in relation to the accompanying drawings.
To illustrate the invention, we will describe below the process using a partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon to produce acetylene.
According to the invention, acetylene is produced by partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon, with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas, in a reaction zone or combustion chamber formed by a wall or d 'an annular curtain of liquid which moves at high speed towards an extinguishing wall. The reaction of gases within the reaction zone surrounded by a liquid wall is carried out at a temperature which produces acetylene, for example 1100 to 1500 C and at a rate such as the time of passage through the gas. reaction zone to a first cooling is between 0.0005 and 0.005 sec.
By limiting the time during which the gas mixture can remain at also high temperatures and by suddenly cooling immediately after the gas mixtures to a temperature at which there is hardly any reaction, for example around about 650 C, or less, acetylene can be obtained with maximum yield.
The reaction time which will preferably be approximately.
0.001 sec. is precisely controlled by varying the length of the reaction zone by adjusting the position of the stop wall.
The reaction gases inside the reaction zone are deflected by the barrier wall after the reaction time
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
suitable and are directed radially through the liquid wall, then they are suddenly cooled to a temperature below the reaction temperature.
By using a liquid as a means of limiting the combustion zone, all problems concerning damage or destruction due to high reaction temperatures of stationary devices are eliminated. In. In addition, there are no longer any walls of stationary chambers or ancillary devices - to which combustion products can adhere or foul and the high velocity water acts as exact positive cooling and as a scrubber for the reaction gases to. the end of the expected reaction period.
The invention thus consists of a method and an apparatus for the production of light hydrocarbons and in particular characterized in that it comprises:
1) a burner mixer of hydrocarbon and oxygen;
2) a reaction chamber comprising an annular wall moving in a liquid, formed by an annular orifice;
3) an adjustable stop wall opposite the flow of reaction gases and the open end of the liquid chamber to direct the gases to be cooled by the liquid wall at the end of their residence time; and
4) any auxiliary apparatus which may be required to compress and process the cooled gases and coolant and to return this liquid for the purpose of maintaining the liquid wall of the reaction zone.
The nature of the invention can easily be understood with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: - Figure 1 shows schematically a longitudinal section of a tower comprising a multitude of acetylene producers of this invention; - Figure 2 is a partial sectional view of Figure 1
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
which better shows the deviceon of acetylene producers and their auxiliary devices; Figure 3 is an enlarged section of a preferred embodiment of one of the units of Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings, the illustrated apparatus consists of a vertical chamber 10 in which several similar partial oxidation reactions are to take place. In accordance with a preferred technique which consists in producing acetylene by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons, such as methane, ethane, natural or vaporized gases, with oxygen or air, it is necessary to First, the hydrocarbons and the oxygen are heated separately and they are introduced respectively to the head units 11 and 12. These devices distribute the hydrocarbons and gases containing oxygen heated through lines 13 and 14 to several mixer burners 15 one of which is best illustrated by figure 3.
The hydrocarbon gas which is to be converted by partial oxidation comes out. high speed of a central burner 16 and is mixed at reaction temperatures with oxygen or air which exits at high speed from several burners 17 which surround the jet 16. The gases which exit from the jets 16 and 17 are thoroughly mixed and react with the formation of a flame which moves away at high speed from the mixing device.
To obtain relatively high yields of acetylene, it is necessary to maintain the reaction gas mixture at a temperature which produces acetylene, for example between 1100 C and about 1500 C, by passing the reaction mixture through a zone. defined reaction. Heretofore, the reaction zone for reactions of this nature has been constructed from metallic or refractory materials which are liable to be damaged or destroyed by the high heat of the reaction.
The reaction zone 20 of the present invention is bounded by a moving annular liquid wall 21, maintained
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
constantly by a liquid, such as water, which comes out at high speed. large number of closely spaced nozzles or an annular orifice 22. It should be noted that heat will be transferred to the water wall by radiation and convection. This amount of waste heat is relatively small, however, despite the large difference in temperature, due to the small surface area of the water wall. and the tremendous heat released into the reaction zone.
The liquid for forming the moving wall 21 is obtained from a reservoir (not shown), then it is pumped under high pressure by the pump P through the line 23, the head apparatus 24 and the line .25 to the chamber 26 which comprises a part 27 for directing the liquid and the orifice 22.
It is known that acetylene decomposes when held for a long time at elevated temperature. It has therefore become common practice to rapidly reduce the temperature of the reaction gases below the reaction temperatures when a given volume of gas mixture has reacted to produce maximum acetylene yield, thereby maintaining the maximum amount of acetic acid. - tylene produced. In accordance with this, the known art has dictated that the high velocity reaction gas mixture which expands as it passes through the reaction zone, should be cooled below reaction temperatures after about
0.0005 to 0.005 sec. residence in the reaction zone, depending on the gas velocity.
The invention not only relates to an improved reactor for limiting reaction gases, as described above, but also provides improved rapid cooling means for rapidly and effectively reducing the temperatures of such gases below temperatures of. reaction. This sudden cooling means uses the liquid which forms the wall 21 of the reaction chamber by directing such liquid in annular motion towards an annular contact point or surface 28 on a deflection baffle 29. The annular liquid flow is
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
ruptured by contact with the chican 29. and the liquid is deflected out of the moving liquid wall of the reaction zone.
The gas mixture which reacts in zone 20 of the apparatus is limited by the moving liquid wall 21 and directed towards the baffle 29 where, after sufficient reaction time, it is forced into intimate and complete contact with the liquid. from the wall 21 to the annular contact surface 28. There is thus achieved a complete abrupt cooling of the gas mixture cracked below the reaction temperature in the vicinity of the zone 28 by contact with the relatively cold liquid, as well as thorough cleaning of the cracked gas to remove any unwanted particles of carbonaceous material which may result from the reaction.
The moving liquid wall 21 also provides a continuous surface for collecting such carbonaceous materials which would normally be deposited in a reaction chamber whose walls would be made of metal or of refractory materials. All carbonaceous material is removed from the reaction zone by the liquid. when this liquid vaporizes after cooling, and are possibly collected in the lower part of the container 10.
The liquid collected at the bottom of vessel 10 is removed through line 30 and is then transferred to a settling tank (not shown) where unwanted carbonaceous material is deposited as the liquid is cooled prior to its reintroduction into the head apparatus. 24 by the pump P. '
The temperature of the partially cooled cracked gas mixture is further lowered as the gas rises in vessel 10 and comes into contact with a coolant which cascades downward from trays 31 and 32 which may collapse. find in the upper parts of the container 10.
The liquid which achieves this final cooling enters the vessel through line 33 above the trays and may be part of the liquid in line 23 which has been pumped from a settling tank. In most cases, this liquid
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
contact will be water, as will the liquid needed to form the liquid wall of the reaction zone.
The cooled crack gas mixture, comprising a maximum content of acetylene and other key hydrocarbons, leaves vessel 10 through line 34 and is directed to any other purification or separation system that may be desired.
Figure 2 which is a partial cross section of the reaction vessel and apparatus, better illustrates how several similar reactions can be carried out in the same vessel. A plurality of chambers 26 including portions for directing liquid 27 are spaced around the periphery of the vessel 10. Each of the chambers 26 is connected by a conduit 25 to the head apparatus 24. There is a burner-mixer 15 at the top. inside each part 27. The burners and chambers around the vessel are positioned such that the reaction gases and the liquid wall are propagated to a central baffle support 35 which carries a deflection baffle 29 to intercept the liquid wall. each reaction part.
The support of the baffles must be separated from the bottom of the container by the supports 36.
Since the temperature and reaction time of gas mixtures in partial oxidation reactions of the type described here are critical and are influenced by variations such as the amount and velocity of the gases and the length of the reaction zone from the start of reaction until cooling, it is obvious that an appropriate control must be provided for the gas supply to the burner-mixer. Likewise, the length of the reaction zone must be varied by moving the combustion-mixing device and the means forming the liquid wall towards the baffle 29 or in the opposite direction.
In order to initiate the reaction, the gaseous mixture which leaves the burner 15 is ignited by auxiliary means (not shown), the moving liquid wall being formed soon after and in a manner which makes it possible to avoid extinguishing or burning.

Although the description refers to a preferred embodiment of this invention,
you can make changes; one can for example arrange a screen around the reaction chamber with liquid wall over a part of its length to ensure that the moving liquid wall retains its shape during its movement towards the cooling surface; - one can also arrange the burner, the means which form the liquid wall and the stop wall in a vertical line, the liquid wall then falling towards the cooling surface. It may also be desirable under certain conditions to provide a stream of water over the face of the contact baffle which is in the cooling rings, to avoid carbon deposits thereon.
