<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Bloom and Deutsch U.S. Patent Application No. 637.637, filed February 1, 1957, describes the preparation of a dye for vessels by halogenation of the cis isomer, obtained by condensation of an acid. 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetra-carboxylic acid with an amine, using nitrobenzene as the reaction medium. A process for preparing the cis isomer is described in US Patent No. 1,588,451.
According to the process described in this patent, when a tetrocarboxylic acid of 1,4,5,8-naphthalene is condensed with an ortho-phenylenediamine, a mixture of two isomeric dyes of formulas is obtained.
EMI2.1
When condensing a substituted ortho-phenylene diamine with 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetra-carboxylic acid, the same reaction occurs in many cases, i.e. a mixture of the cis and trans isomers is also obtained.
The mixture of isomeric dyes can be separated into its cis and trans components by any suitable method, most of which have been described in the patent art. For example, US Patent No. 1,888,624 describes a separation of this mixture of dyes into its components, by dissolving the mixture of dyes in concentrated sulfuric acid and causing fractional crystallization of the dissolved dyes,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
out of the sulfuric acid solution, by diluting or cooling this sulfuric acid solution.
In U.S. Patents Nos. 1,888,625 and 1,888,626, the separation is carried out using chloroacetic acid; in U.S. Patent No. 1,927,928 ,. using alcoholic alkali metal hydroxide; in US Pat. No. 1,952,661, toluenesulfonic acid is employed; in US Pat. No. 2,011,807, a solution of aluminum chloride in nitro-benzene is used, while in US Pat. No. 2,073,098, sodium amide or sodium ethoxide is used. for
EMI3.1
bt, jµj (x '.' \ .... carry out the separation. Among the products obtained from the initial mixture of the cis isomer and the trans isomer, the latter is the most interesting.
More specifically, when condensing 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetra-carboxylic acid with ortho-phenylenediamine, according to US Pat. No. 1,588,451 and separating the mixture into its two isomeric components, according to the process described in US Pat. No. 1,927,928, where toluenesulphonic acid is used in the process for separating the two components, the trans isomer is obtained, which colors cotton in orange tints and which is characterized in that it has excellent resistance properties; also obtains the cis isomer which has a low wash resistance characteristic of all cis isomers. The cis isomer has good resistance to light, but the dyes bleed off strongly after washing.
Therefore the cis isomer could not be accepted commercially.
As described in US Patent Application No. 637,637, mentioned above, when halogenated, for example when chlorinating or brominating the cis isomers, heretofore uninteresting, of the initial mixtures of the isomeric dyes, one obtains very satisfactory dyes having excellent strength properties. In the case of the cis isomer, so far
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of no commercial value and obtained from the mixture of isomers prepared according to the patent? 1,588,451, for example by chlorinating or brominating the cis isomer, a very interesting dye is obtained. The color of the latter turns blue and, depending on the chlorine or the bromine introduced into the molecule, the desired red-brown tints are obtained.
This behavior of the isomer is was rather unexpected, since the chlorine-containing compound corresponding to the formula
EMI4.1
(this compound being obtained by condensing the tetra-carboxylic acid from 1,4,5,8-naphthalene, then by separating this compound from one of its mixtures with its trans isomer by one or the other known method) has a very low resistance to washing and is not more interesting than the cis isomer, discussed above and obtained according to the process of US Pat. No. 1,588,451, for example a cis isomer containing no halogen in the molecule .
It has been found that by halogenating, for example by chlorinating or by brominating the cis isomer obtained according to the process of US Pat. No. 1,588,451, a process in which the 1,4,5,8 tetra-carboxylic acid is condensed. -naphthalene with ortho-phenylenediamine and where the mixture is separated into its components, the) properties of the new dyes obtained from the isomer
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
They are entirely different and much better, thus providing an interesting dye.
The exact positions in which the halogens are introduced into the cis isomer is not certain, but, due to the entirely different behavior of the halogenated cis isomer, prepared according to the present invention, it is believed that the halogens do not. are not in the benzene ring or that, if they are in the benzene ring, the halogens are not in the same positions as those occupied by them when introduced before condensation.
The halogenation treatment, applied in @ her patent application N 637,637, was carried out in the presence of nitrobenzene as reaction medium, nitrobenzene being well known and used very widely for this purpose, although it makes the process rather expensive.
Now it has surprisingly been found that the halogenation, e.g. chlorination and bromination of the cis isomer obtained by condensing a 1,4,5,8- tetra-carboxylic acid can be carried out. naphthalene with an amine, according to patent No. 1,588,451, using an aqueous reaction medium. By halogenating this cis isomer in this way, a very interesting dye is obtained which is resistant to light and washing while coloring the cottony materials to a reddish-brown tint. This finding is of great importance from an economic point of view, since the use of an aqueous reaction medium substantially reduces the cost of manufacturing the dye.
According to the present invention, is suspended in water, 1 cis isomer obtained by condensing a tetracarboxylic acid of 1,4,5,8-naphthalene with an ortho-diamine, such as for example ortho-phenylene. diamine. The aqueous suspension is then subjected to the action of chlorine or bromine at a temperature of 60 to 100 ° C. for 20 to 40 hours. We then isolate the pro-

halogenation product of the reaction mixture.
