The present invention relates to improvements made to presses used for extruding metals or non-ferrous alloys, for example for manufacturing plumb tubes.
The object of the present invention is to obtain quality products and in particular tubes free from the well known defect of lack of centering.
For the manufacture of these tubes a die in which is placed a mandrel is used. This mandrel can be adapted either to the end of a long mandrel holder passing through the ramming press, or on a special mandrel holder placed against the industry.
It is admitted in principle that under the effect of the radial pressures which appear during the pushing, the mandrel which passes through the die tends to be centered automatically, which makes it possible to obtain pipes of equal thickness throughout. However, in practice, it may happen that this centering is imperfect, either because the mandrel, rigidly fixed in its support, cannot move, or because the mandrel holder itself is poorly centered as a result of improper adjustment of the press or due to expansion phenomena, offers too much resistance to the natural tendency of centering
In accordance with the present invention, use is made of a relatively short mandrel freely mounted in a mandrel holder with sufficient clearance so that it can move independently of the mandrel holder.
Figs.1 and 2 of the drawings below halfrent by way of example, two embodiments of the invention.
Referring to FIG. 1, which shows an application of the invention to a mandrel having a diameter at most equal to the internal diameter of the mandrel holder, a mandrel 2 is introduced in the direction of arrow A in the mandrel holder 1. A stop 3 prevents the mandrel from advancing under the effect of the pressure of the metal being extruded; the diameter of the front part of the chuck holder is smaller than the diameter of the back part of the chuck. This rear part has a smaller diameter than the inside diameter provided at the rear of the chuck holder. There is therefore at this point a clearance 4 which allows a certain oscillation of the mandrel 2.
In order to prevent the metal compressed in the "container", that is to say in the part of the press, in which the ingot to be extruded is placed, from acting on the mandrel to block it, the holder -Chuck is closed by a cover 5-This cover 5 is provided with a stud 6 pressing on the rear surface of the chuck 2 to prevent the latter from moving back.
Fig.2 shows a similar arrangement of a mandrel for use with tubes having a diameter larger than the anterior part of the mandrel holder.
In this case, the mandrel 2 is introduced into its support in the direction of arrow B, that is to say towards the rear, while the rear part 7 of the mandrel is removable and is introduced into the holder. mandrel in the direction of your arrow Co This rear part 7 is screwed into the mandrel 2.On thus achieves an arrangement similar to that of fig.1.
The arrangements described above can be applied without difficulty to mandrel supports having the ton of a bridge applied against the extrusion die. In this case, the mandrel holder is part of a cross member 8 which comes s 'engage in a ring applied against the die (not shown).
A similar arrangement can be used with a long mandrel holder passing through the tamper-presser. In this case, a similar device
