<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS TO LOCAL EQUIPMENT FOR COLLECTORS AND HARVESTERS
OF FLAX 0 U OF OTHER TEXTILE PLANTS.
The present invention relates to binding apparatus for machines for picking up and pulling flax or other textile plants and aims to remedy certain difficulties which arise in practice.
One of these difficulties is that, after forming the bundle, some heads of the linen stalks remain entangled in the linen web fed to the binding device and therefore the bundle remains on the table instead of fallp -
In order to overcome this drawback, a mechanically controlled fork is provided above the binder's table, designed so as to prick into each boot already subjected to the action of ejector fingers or equivalent members and to launch it from a distance.
Experience has shown on the other hand that, during the formation of the boot, it is important to retain the web and for this purpose a device is provided which comprises a shoe, a pad or the like brought behind the tip of the separator from that this has penetrated the linen.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, this shoe is fixed to a sliding rod and is held in the position where it acts on the flax by a locking bar which is returned to its unlocking position by an oscillating bar subjected to the action of a finger carried by a shaft with continuous rotational movement.
The. The accompanying drawings are intended to show by way of non-limiting examples how these devices can be realized in practice.
FIG. 1 is a schematic view of the fork control device serving to promote the ejection of the boot.
Figure 1A is a detail view.
Figure 2 is a view similar to that of-, Figure 1, the

fork being in the position where it pricked the boot.
FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 are views showing, in three different positions, the device for retaining the linen web.
Figures 6 and 7 show in profile view the control mechanism of the flax retainer.
FIG. 8 is an elevational view of this device.
In the device shown in Figures 1 and 2, of the drawings, a fork 1 is mounted above the table 2 of the binder and the handle 9 is articulated at its upper end (at 3) on a lever 4 my - Tee itself pivoted at 5 on a support 6 integral with an arm 7 projecting relative to a fixed frame comprising in particular frames 8 integral with an angle 24.
On the lower end of the handle is articulated (at 10) a handle 11 driven by a shaft 12 supported by the frame and on which a chain wheel 13 is wedged.
This wheel 13 is controlled by a chain 14 passing over a wheel 15 (FIG. 1A) wedged on a shaft 16 which also carries a wheel 17 controlled by a shaft 18 by a chain 19 and a wheel 20. The shaft 18 is driven by shaft 21 of the machine (fig. lA).
The fork 1-9 will thus receive an up and down movement under the action of the crank 11 rotating in the direction of the arrow F and as shown in Figure 2 will prick into the boot B which is further pushed by the ejector arms 22 fixed on the shaft 18 and rotating in the direction of arrow F.
With a sudden movement, the sheaves are thrown at a distance on the ground and one is certain that the boot being formed, the heads of linen will not remain entangled in the tablecloth.
To retain the flax during the binding operation, use is made of a device which is shown schematically in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 and which consists of a shoe 23 fixed to the end of a rod 25. smoothing in a guide 26 fixed to the angle iron 24 by an arm 27. The shoe 23 is arranged in such a way that, during the formation of the boot, it can act by pressure on the flax moving on the table 2 and the hand- hold on.
The descent of the shoe 23 does not take place until the point 28 of the separator has already penetrated the flax of a certain length. Only then does this shoe descend and place itself just behind this point (at 23 - fig. 5). The shoe 23 carries on its lower face a tenon 29 which penetrates into the opening 30 in which the point 28 engages and which thus retains the intermingled strands capable of forming knots.
On the rod 25 is fixed a collar 31 which carries a stud 32 able to move in a slide 33 integral with a rod 34 connected by an articulation with a crank 35 driven by the shaft 16. Between the collar 31 and a collar 36 located near the guide 26, extends a spiral spring 37 wound around the rod 25.
The collar 31 further carries a projection 38 on which hinges a bar 39 which extends upward, passes through a stop 40 and is provided at its end with a plate 41. It is provided, also close to its end, with a notch 42 intended to cooperate with the stop 40.
Another bar 43 is mounted at its upper end on an axis 44 arranged horizontally rotating in a bearing carried by the angle iron 45 and ends in an elbow 46 provided with a finger 47. Downwards, this bar 43 is subjected to the 'action of a finger 48 carried by a sleeve 49 integral with the shaft 18 such that, at each turn, this shaft can push back the bar 43, which is furthermore connected by a spring 50 with the angle iron 45.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
When the linking device operates, the shaft 16 drives the connecting rod 35 in its rotation and lowers the rod 34 as well as the slide 33. At the moment when the bottom of the slide meets the stud 32, the slide drives the latter in its position. downward movement which has the effect of lowering the bar 39 and-bringing the shoe 23 into contact with the flax (Fig. 7) while, in time, the spring 37 is compressed. The barred 39 will be retained because the stopper 42 engages in the part 40 and is held there by a leaf spring 57 acting on the bar 39 and attached to a sleeve 52 fixed to the rod 25. .
As already said, a finger 48 acts constantly on the bar 43 and, at a given moment, that is to say when it occupies the position 481 (fig. 7), the bar 43 which has come at 431 acts by its finger 47 and the plate 41 and thus disengages the stopper 42 with respect to the part-40 and therefore the bar 39 can move upwards by driving the rod 25, so that the shoe 23 is returned to the position of FIG. 6. This movement is aided by the spring 37 and also by the spring 53 fixed on the one hand to the angle iron 45 and on the other hand to a sleeve 54 also fixed on the rod 25.
The slide 33 is at the same time returned to the position shown in solid lines in Figure 6.
