<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

A typical automobile wheel is shown in the drawings at 21: it is provided as usual with a pneumatic tire 22. Wheels of this type are provided with flanges set back and drilled with holes 23 to receive the nuts of the wheel. conical fasteners to keep the wheel in place.
The machine, object of the invention, which is intended to adjust the pneumatic tire and thus to balance the wheel comprises a support post 10 provided with a base 11 which can be fixed, in particular by means of bolts 12, on the floor of a workshop or more generally on any support surface. The upright 10 supports a capital 13 formed by a stamped piece of metal and from which protrudes an arm 14 which supports a sleeve 15 forming the bearing of a shaft.
This sleeve 15 forming a bearing contains anti-friction bearings 16 in which the shaft 17 supporting the wheel 21 can freely rotate. A disk 18 ′ is mounted on this shaft 17 in the vicinity of the outer end of the sleeve 15 forming a bearing. The shaft 17 ends with a threaded stud 12 which receives a locking nut 20.
The automobile wheel 21 mounted on the shaft 17 is immobilized against the disc 18 by means of a clamping plate ± and a nut 20 This clamping plate 24 is provided with conical studs 25 placed so as to penetrate and to be centered automatically in the holes 23. Each machine is equipped with a set of different clamping plates 24 provided with conical studs 25 in variable numbers and arranged in spacings which are themselves variable, so as to face to automobile wheels of various types or kinds and from various manufacturers.
During the operation of "shaving" the rubber which constitutes the tread of the tire, that is to say during the operation of adjusting and balancing this tire, the wheel 21 is rotated. - tion by an electric motor 26 supported by a box 27 containing a worm gear and mounted on the capital 13. The shaft 28 of this

motor 26 protrudes from box 27 and receives the flexible shaft (not shown) which actuates the grinding or polishing or scraping tools.
The worm gear housed in the box 27 rotates an actuating shaft at a speed equal to a fraction of the rotational speed of the motor 26. The end of this shaft is placed in axial alignment with the end of the shaft 17 which carries the wheel

21. The adjacent ends of the two shafts 29¯ and 1 carry clutch collars 73 which are not circular but preferably square.
A clutch sleeve 30 is slidably mounted on the collars so that it can be moved in translation from a disengaged position on shaft 29 to an engaged position in which it overlaps the shaft.

The electric current is brought to the motor through the intermediary of a flexible electric cable controlled by an electric switch 43.
The bearing member 38 is mounted on a support flange 44 integral with the end of a tubular transverse shaft 45. The latter is mounted so as to rotate and slide in an elongated bearing 46 integral with a cross member 47 which can slide longitudinally on two

the bearing .L "6 by means of a hand lever installed in a support 60 The latter is articulated on the end of a rod 6 extending to an articulated console 7 mounted on the cross member III and carries a protruding stud 61 mounted in the end of the tubular shaft 45. This stud 61 is rotatable relative to the shaft 45 and is held therein by means of a cap 62 fixed invariably at the end. of the tree

.4, by set screws or in any other manner desired.
It can be seen from the drawing that if the lever is given an oscillating movement, the latter slides the shaft ± ± in both directions in the bearing 46.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It can be seen from the foregoing that the shaft 45 can rotate freely without causing the lever 55 to rotate. The rotation is imparted to the shaft 45 by means of an arm 64 forming a template which projects upwardly relative to the shaft 45. at the cap 62. This arm ± ± ends with a roller intended to roll along the profile of a surface forming a cam and to move in a guide slot 66 made in a curved plate chosen by wire. fixed on the support arm 58 by means of a locking jaw 68 and a wire fixing screw. The arm 58 is mounted on the cross member 47 by screws 59 with suitable cap.
OPERATION.
The wheel 21 of an automobile (or other vehicle) fitted with its pneumatic tire is mounted on the support shaft 17 by means of the clamping plate 24 and the nut 20. The wire plate is chosen. forming the suitable template corresponding to the particular tire and is mounted above the roller 65 and therefore below the locking jaw 68 by immobilizing it with the fixing screw 69.
The motors 26 and 40 are then started to turn the wheel fitted with its tire in the downward direction (on the front side) and to give a rapid rotation to the knife 33. The steering wheel is then turned ± ± to bring the knife 33 closer to the surface of the tread of the tire which turns until the bumps of this tread are attacked by this knife. The lever 55 is then slowly pivoted laterally, so as to force the roller 65 to follow the contour of the guide slot 66 and to impose on the knife 33 a path representing an arc corresponding substantially to that of the tread, so as in notching or "shaving" the bumps forming offsets of this tread.
This operation is continued by carefully adjusting the position of the handwheel 54 and by imparting a lateral movement of the lever ± ± until a perfect, uniform and strictly circular tread surface is obtained.
The knife 33 is then moved away from the tread of the tire, then the clutch control lever 31 is pivoted to disengage the shaft 17 which carries the wheel 21 from the drive shaft 29. This disengagement allows the wheel to spin idle, which gives the possibility of easily determining and adjusting its balance using the usual counterweights.
The details of construction of this machine may be varied in various ways without departing from the invention in the field of mechanical equivalents.
