<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

It is specified in the '476,174 patent that the reaction is preferably carried out while hot, advantageously in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst (iron, zinc or calcium chlorides) but that the possibility of l It is part of the invention as described in said patent to be carried out under other conditions of temperature or pressure, without or with a catalyst or solvent.
A first improvement patent, no. 478, 117, gives an example of carrying out the reaction in the presence of aluminum chloride as catalyst.
The present improvement relates to carrying out the reaction in the absence of a solvent. It has been found that in this case the side reactions are more restricted and that the polymerization is more homogeneous, which is likely to increase the yield of technically useful products and of alkyl halides respectively of aryl red. - copperable.
As catalyst, one or the other of the metal chlorides mentioned above is used. With aluminum chloride, it is possible to obtain varnish resins with rapid curing, almost colorless or very slightly yellowish, with certainty.
With other catalysts, in particular with ferric chloride, slower polymerization products are obtained for the same R / Si ratio. These are more strongly colored, which makes their use in certain varnishes less suitable, for example in decorative varnishes. For an equal amount of catalyst the reaction is generally slower with aluminum chloride than with ferric chloride, but it has been found that for the preparation of polysiloxanes usable as
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
varnish, it is possible to carry out the reaction in a reasonable time and to obtain products having a desired degree of polymerization by using, relative to the halosilanes employed, 1 to 6% of aluminum chloride.
In certain cases, for example for the preparation of polysiloxanes containing predominantly alkyl radicals with a small number of carbon atoms, the amount of aluminum chloride may exceed the stated limit, in order to provoke the reaction at a minimum. sufficiently low temperature.
The following examples show possible embodiments of the invention without limiting it in any way.
Example 1.
Into a 250 cm3 flask fitted with a stirrer, a reflux column, a thermometer and a brine funnel, 49 g of dimethyldichlorosilane and 43 g of methyltrichlorosilane are introduced. 74.6 g of pure or suitably denatured anhydrous ethyl alcohol (eg benzene) are added dropwise with continuous stirring. An immediate release of HCl is observed. When all the alcohol is introduced, the mixture is heated at reflux until the evolution of HC1 ceases.
A slow stream of dry nitrogen is then passed through the apparatus. About 10% hydrochloric acid remains dissolved in the methylethoxysilanes thus obtained. A mixture of 95 g of diphenyldichlorosilane and 59.6 g of phenyltrichlorosilane is then slowly added. A weak evolution of dissolved HCl is observed which ceases rapidly. 6 g of anhydrous AlCl 3 are added to the flask and slowly heated. There is a continuous evolution of ethyl chloride.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
When we arrive after 5 to 6 hours of heating at 17 ° C. in the liquid, the quantity of chlorine released in the form of ethyl chloride represents 73% of the total chlorine. A gentle stream of nitrogen is bubbled through the resin for 15 minutes while continuing to heat. Allowed to cool and the viscous resin is taken up in benzene.
The amount of chlorine remaining in the resin was found to be 4.3%, while that collected as ethyl chloride was 76.6% and that released as HCl was about 19%. It is washed with water to remove the catalyst and the benzene is evaporated off in vacuo (150 ° C., 20 μm Hg). 154 g of an almost colorless, rapidly polymerizing resin was collected, giving, after curing, a hard, shiny and even films.
Example 2.
129 g of dimethyldichlorosilane are introduced into the flask of the device described in Example 1, and 96 g of pure absolute ethyl alcohol or suitably denatured (for example with benzene) are allowed to flow therein dropwise. When all the alcohol is introduced, it is heated to reflux for
2 hours. A certain amount of dissolved HCl (about 15%) remains in the dimethyldiethoxysilane formed. 256 g of diphenyldichlorosilane and 11.5 g of Al chloride are then slowly added and the mixture is gradually heated. A certain amount of HCl is given off and then at around 110 ethyl chloride begins to form. We heat up very gradually and after 6 hours we reach a liquid temperature of 140 C.
Maintained at this temperature for 2 hours (reflux). The content of the mixture of chloro- and
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
chlorine ethoxysilanes is in this case 14% of the initial Cl and the amount of ethyl chloride collected is
72% of the theoretical amount. Toluene is added in order to make the mass less viscous, it is washed with water and the solvent is removed by heating under vacuum (170 ° C.
25 mm Hg). 240 g of a very slow polymerization light yellow resin are collected, giving, after baking at 250 ° C., relatively soft, yet shiny and continuous films.
