Process for the preparation of methyl-phenyl-polysiloxane. The present patent has to polish the object of a process (the preparation of methyl-phenyl-poly-siloxane, a known product, in which a mixture of dimethyl- and mono-ethyl-alkyloxysilanes is reacted with it mixture of diphenyl- and monophenyl -halosilanes,
so as to cause the condensation of these compounds with liberation of alkyl halide and formation of methyl 1-phenyl 1-polysiloxane; this process is characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the absence of solvent. We have. found in fact that in the absence of solvent, the side reactions are more restricted and that the polymerization is more homogeneous.
The reaction is preferably carried out at. hot and in the presence of a catalyst such as iron, zinc, calcium or aluminum chloride.
Aluminum chloride makes it possible to obtain with certainty a product with rapid polymerization, providing almost colorless or very slightly yellowish resins and therefore very suitable for the preparation of varnishes. With other catalysts, in particular: with ferric chloride, a product with. slower polymerization and more strongly colored, which makes its use in certain varnishes less suitable, for example in decorative varnishes.
For an equal amount of catalyst, the reaction is generally slower with aluminum chloride than with ferric chloride. For the preparation of methyl-phenyl-polysiloxane which can be used as a varnish, it is possible to carry out the reaction in a reasonable time and to obtain a product having a desired degree of polymerization by using, relative to the halosilanes employed, 1 to 6% of chloride of 'aluminum.
Example: <I> '</I> Into a 250 em3 flask fitted with a stirrer, a reflux column, a thermometer and a bromine funnel, 49 g of dimethyldichlorosilane are introduced and 43 g of methyltrichlorosilane. 74.6 g of pure or suitably de-naturalized anhydrous ethyl alcohol (for example with benzene) are added dropwise with continuous stirring. An immediate release of HCl is observed. When all the alcohol is introduced,
it is heated at reflux until the evolution of HCl ceases. A slow stream of dry nitrogen is then passed through the apparatus. About 10% hydrochloric acid remains dissolved in the methylethozysilanes thus obtained. A mixture of 95 g of diphenyldichlorosilane and 59.6 g of phenyltrichlorosilane is then slowly added. A weak evolution of dissolved HCl is observed which ceases rapidly. 6 g of anhydrous AICl3 are introduced into the flask and slowly heated. There is a continuous evolution of ethyl chloride.
When one arrives after 5 to 6 hours of heating at 171 C in the liquid, the quantity of chlorine released in the form of ethyl chloride represents 73% of the total elrlore. A gentle stream of nitrogen is bubbled through the resin for 15 minutes, while continuing to heat. Allowed to cool and the viscous resin is taken up in benzene. The amount of chlorine remaining in the resin was found to be 4.3%, while that collected in the form of ethyl chloride was 76.6% and that given off as HCl reached about 19%.
Wash with water to remove the catalyst and evaporate the benzene in vacuo (100 ° C, 30 mm 1-1g). 154 g of an almost colorless, rapidly polymerizing methyl-phenyl-polysiloxane are collected, giving, after baking, hard, shiny and even films.
