<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Plant for the rational treatment of short fibers and softening machine.
The present invention relates to an installation for the treatment of short fibers such as short flax, flax tow or other similar plants.
Its main object is to allow the successive and rational elimination of impurities and to provide a softening machine of a new type which is particularly suitable for the treatment of fibers after the major part of the impurities have been removed.
This installation is characterized essentially by the combination of a pre-treatment machine which eliminates the majority of straws, weeds, etc. and a softener which eliminates the small remaining flakes still adherent and which makes the finest fibers. specific to spinning.
Purely by way of example, an installation carried out in conjunction with the accompanying drawings will be described below.

firmly to the invention as well as a fabric softener which can be combined with this installation.
Figure 1 is a schematic view of the whole installation.
Figures 2 and 3 show how the crushing shaker elements are designed in principle.
Figures 4 and 5 relate to the fabric softener, object of the invention.
The installation object of the invention comprises, as shown in Figure 1, a series of elements I, II, III, IV, V each formed of a grinder B and a shaker S and ends with a fabric softener A which will be described below with reference to Figures 4 and 5.
Each shaker S is formed (fig. 2 and 3) in a known manner by fixed uprights 1 serving as supports for longitudinal angles 3 provided with bearings 3 for shafts 4 carrying needles 5 moving in a reciprocating movement in the intervals between fixed bars 6, so as to produce the advance of the material.
This forward movement is controlled by connecting rods 8 connected to a common rod 9 actuated for example by an eccentric 10.
In element I, the bundles of fibers coming from the grinder B1 are received on the shaker S1 which simply has the function of opening these bundles and forming a web having a substantially equal thickness. Before reaching item I, the fibers have preferably been suitably dried by passing through a drier of a suitable size.
After the web has been thus formed in element I, the material is subjected to the action of one or more
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
grinding-seooueurs elements II, III, IV, V which have the particular characteristic that, at the exit of the pairs of grinding rollers 11 (fig. 2), the fibers fall freely on the needles 5 and that, as long as they are retained by the last pair of rollers, they hang vertically and freely forming a tuft T, in which penetrate the needles 5 which are given a sufficient length so that they act on the hanging fibers, producing a working and a kind of scutching which is exerted on a material thickness appreciably greater than that of the web coming out of the rolls and which ensures good elimination of the flakes.
This length of the rods also makes it possible to obtain a significant back-and-forth stroke inside the
EMI3.1
nappē-pndante.
This cutting is carried out by friction; on the other hand, from one mill to another there is a displacement of the position of the fibers relative to the grooves of the cylinders, which increases the chances that a fiber in a favorable position will be brought into a position. favorable.
In addition, a uniform web is created which thus prevents any material jamming.
The opening occurs from the first contact of the fibers with the needles and the length of the needles is also chosen such that the latter protrude sufficiently above the grid so that, by the high speed, the mass of fibers remains on the tips. needles and does not fall on the grid
The ends of these needles are generally pointed or bevelled in order to break the straws by the blows given and to make them fall by the shaking.
These successive treatments using shaker breying elements have the consequence that, after passing through a @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
appropriate number of these elements, for example four or five (this number is in no way limiting),
most of the straw and weeds are removed, virtually all impurities can be removed.
The grinders used can be of any suitable type, but it will preferably be done so that, from the inlet to the outlet, the speed of the grooved rollers increases and that the teeth become finer and finer.
The action of the series of shaker crushing elements follows that of the softening machine shown in Figures 4 and 5 and having the function of eliminating the small flakes still adherent and to soften the fibers in order to improve their qualities for spinning.
This machine comprises a sheet 12 receiving the web N coming from the last shaker and introducing it between two rollers 13 and 14 which are preferably covered with rubber or a similar material and one of which co-operates with a cylinder 15 lined with blades 16 treating the tablecloth on one side. The latter is then treated on the other side thanks to its introduction between the cylinder 13 and a third cylinder 17, preferably also covered with rubber of a similar material and with which cooperates a cylinder 18 lined with blades 19.
By a guide roller 2C, the web is led into the space between a sheet 21 and a large diameter cylinder 22 furnished with blades or points 23, so that the falling of the pieces is thus avoided. materials on the ground that one perfects the opening and that one guides these last towards the vibrator or final shaker Sn on which the matter can thus fall freely.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Thanks to the arrangement described and more particularly to the cooperation of the cylinders 13,14, 15,17 and 18, the web is treated alternately on one side then the other, and this only once, which avoids any damage to the fibers, thanks to the elasticity of the rubber.
On the other hand, due to the presence of the rubber covering of the rollers 13, 14 and 17, the thickness of the web can be easily adjusted and variable thicknesses can be processed without modifying the installation. .
This installation therefore makes it possible to eliminate, by simple means, first of all the meshes which may be suitable as fuel (in the vibrating and grinding elements) and then (in the softener), the short cone fibers coming for example as material. first for stationery (cigarette paper), while ultimately providing fibers suitable for spinning which, thanks to the treatment proposed, are significantly improved.
Numerous variants can be introduced into the design of the installation and the inventor intends in particular to reserve the exclusive rights to any fabric softening machine of the type described even if it is not combined with a prior treatment machine similar to that described.
