<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Progressive variable speed drive combined with electric motor."
The present invention relates to a progressive speed variator combined with an electric motor.
The variator according to the invention is intended to actuate machines of any kind and can equally well be produced as a separate unit or as part of a machine.
By way of example, one embodiment of the variator according to the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section thereof; FIG. 2 is a partial profile view thereof.

The conical pulley 1 encloses the electric motor 2-2a, the rotor of which can be arranged in 2 or 2a. In the case of a short-circuited rotor motor coupling, the electric current flows through axis 2 in part 2a. For a winding rotor, the power supply could be done through the slip rings and 5.
The conical pulley 1 is mounted loose on the shaft .7, with its internal part 2. of the motor, by the bearings 8. and 8a.
This axis β is firmly secured to part 2a of the engine, to the grooved pulley 9, and to the pinion 10. The toothed ring 11a is extended by a nozzle 11c serving both as a bearing for the shaft 1 and as an axis in the bearing 12. The second bearing of the shaft 7. is arranged at 1}. The planetary pinion 24 is mounted idle on the journal and meshed, on the one hand with the toothed pinion 10 and on the other hand with the internal teeth 11 of the crown 11a The journal 25 is fixed to the conical pulley 1 by its shoulder 26, and therefore, is made integral with part 2. of the electric motor.
The bearings 12 and 13 are fixed to the frame 14. In order to condition the tension of the belts 17 and 18, the bearings 15 and 16 of the axis 19 of the conical driven pulley 20 are movably mounted in the frame 14. Said pulley 20 is carried on its axis by the bearings 22 and 23 and extended laterally by a pulley 21 with grooves coming in one piece or not. The two pulleys 1 and 20 thus constitute, with their mobile transmission belt 17, a cone speed variator. The two pulleys 2 and 21, connected, for example as in the case of the appended figures, by two trapezoidal pulleys, constitute a fixed ratio transmission.
Parts 2 and 2a of the engine are coupled through the transmission mechanism 7-9-18-21-20-17-1, so that their gear ratio can be changed by an appropriate amount, by the shifting

of the belt 17. The condition to be observed for the variable speed drive where parts 2 and 2a of the electric motor have the same direction of rotation, that is to say with the belts 17 and 18 similarly arranged, crossed or no - is that the ratio of the speeds of 2. and 2a differs from unity, while also being able to have any value. This condition disappears in the case of different directions of rotation of parts 2 and 2a of the motor, that is to say with one of the belts 17 and 18 crossed.
The progressive fan according to the invention, as described above, operates as follows: when the motor 2-2a is traversed by a current, the part 2a and the members 7, 9 and 10 are driven in rotation, for example clockwise (figure 2).
Therefore, the pulley 9, the uncrossed belt 17, and the pulley 1 of the part 2 of the motor are moved in the same direction, but at a lower speed due to the lower transmission ratio than unity. During start-up, the speeds of the two complexes comprising 2 and 2a respectively will increase until the difference between these speeds reaches a value corresponding to the normal speed of the engine 2-2a.
For example, a three-phase four-pole motor would result in a speed difference of 1500 rpm. about. The relationships between "Angular speed I" - "Angular speed II" - "Angular speed of the motor" - (FIG. 2) are constant for the same type of motor. In this way, by moving the belt 17, the transmission ratio between parts 2 and 2a of the engine is modified, and simultaneously the speed of each part, without the difference of these speeds I and II varying.
The aforesaid variation in the speeds of parts 2 and 2a of the engine, positively controlled by the movement of the belt, is applied, on the one hand, to the pinion 10 and, on the other hand, to the journal 25 driving the sun gear 24. It s' follows that the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
crown 1 receives it a rotational movement III depending both on the choice of the planetary mechanism and on the position of the belt 17 on its conical pulleys. The speed of this movement III can, depending on the value of the respective transmission ratios of the belt and planetary mechanisms, be maintained around the limit speed, or change the direction of rotation.
The variable speed movement III of the crown 11a can finally be transmitted to the machine to be actuated, either by direct coupling, or by a belt transmission, gears, or chain for example.
The application of the known properties of electric motors (for example phase inversion, modification of the number of poles of three-phase motors) makes it possible to invert the direction of movement III and to modify the value of the difference between the speeds of the three-phase motors. components 2 and 2a without modifying the transmission ratio. It is obvious that the planetary mechanism described above can be replaced by any other equivalent, for example a differential, without departing from the scope of the invention.
