PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX METHODES D'EMBALLAGE ET MACHINES A CET
EFFET,
C'est pourquoi l'un des buts de la présente Invention est l'éta- blissement d'une métîaode et d'une machine nouvelles et perfectionnées telle qu'un objet normal., déformable, puisse être manipulé, déformé ou mis temporairement sous une forme spéciale différente de sa forme normale et enfermé ensuite dans un emballage, de telle sorte que quand l'objet est retiré de l'emballage il revienne à sa forme nor- male;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
40 s'écartent de la table 30 pour passer au-dessus et à distance des objets couchés dans le canal-guide correspondant 36, comme le montre la fig.3;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
avance comporte un dispositif qui se conjugue avec les éléments transporteurs pour faire passer automatiquement les objets des élé- ments transporteurs sur la table d'avance* A cèt effet, les éléments transportents comportent deux rainures transversales 54 dirigées vers l'intérieur à partir de leurs bords en travers des alvéoles 53 cor- respondantes; la table se prolonge par un doigt 55 aligné sur chacune de ces rainures de telle sorte que, à chaque élément transporteur ar- rivant à la table d'avance, chacun des doigts 55 pénètre dans la rai- nure 54 correspondante, en dessous de l'objet contenu dans cet élé- ,ment transporteur, comme le montre la fig.4;
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
extrémités sectionnes de la bande de paquets hors des encoches;
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

IMPROVEMENTS IN PACKAGING METHODS AND MACHINES FOR THIS
EFFECT,
This invention relates to the practice of wrapping objects in general, and more particularly contemplates enclosing objects which can be deformed without damage to them. in individual packages of a shape different from the normal shape of the article.
On the one hand, certain objects, such as those made of flexible rubber, have such normal shapes or else the objects are so easily deformable that they cannot be individually packaged or else their packaging is extremely difficult; on the other hand, it is often desired to house deformable objects in packages having a special arrangement or shape which does not correspond to the normal shape of the object.
This is why one of the aims of the present invention is to establish a new and improved method and machine such that a normal object, deformable, can be manipulated, deformed or temporarily placed under. a special shape different from its normal shape and then enclosed in a package, so that when the article is removed from the package it returns to its normal shape;
for example, this invention contemplates a method and apparatus for enclosing a flexible rubber object normally having the shape of a circular ring in a flat elongated package.

To explain the principles of the invention, an embodiment thereof has been shown in a machine for enclosing an object A in the form of a normally circular ring made of flexible rubber, between two strips of packaging material, in order to form a flat packet. B in which the object is contained, although it should be understood that the invention may. be used in machines for packaging other types of objects and objects of other shapes.
EMI3.7
In general, the machine of 1 ', inven% ion comprises a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
device C for fixing two opposing strips D of packaging material such as metal scoop, paper, "rosin", "pliofilm" or the like to each other, to form between them a bag in which is enclosed one of the objects A.
The articles are inserted between the strips of packaging material by a pusher and compressor mechanism E to which the articles are successively fed by an advance mechanism F, to which the articles arrive by a feed mechanism G.
Once the articles are enclosed between the strips of packaging material, a strip of bundles H is formed comprising a number of bags evenly spaced longitudinally, containing an object, and this strip is cut into individual bundles or groups of bundles. by a mechanism 1.
The packing material D strips come from some source such as supply reels which can be dispensed. laid in any suitable manner, and are unwound from the coils by the package forming mechanism C. This mechanism has two rollers 1 and 2 which are arranged to rotate about parallel tubular axes or shafts 3, in each of which is of preferably provided an electric heating element 4 of known arrangement., to impart heat to the rollers in order to facilitate the attachment to one another of the bands B of packaging material when these are thermoplastic or have a coating thermoplastic.
These rollers are driven in opposite directions by means of interlocking pinions 5 each of which is mounted on one of the shafts 1 and 2 and one of which is driven by an idler pinion 6 which, via a gear described below is actuated by a motor shaft 7 which is itself connected to an appropriate power source.
As has been shown, the rollers 1 and '8 are arranged to simultaneously make two packages, each roll comprising two series of cells 8 regularly distributed over their periphery; each cell is arranged to coincide with one of the cells of the other roller or else be juxtaposed with it during the rotation of the rollers. These cells are notched so as to correspond
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
approximately to the shape of the desired package, and the cells facing each other on the two rollers forming between them a clearance in which the object is enclosed in a saohet between the packaging strips.
The cells 8 of each series are on the continuation of one another in the length of the rollers as clearly shown in fig.l. Each of the cells is surrounded on the periphery of the corresponding roll by assembly surfaces
10 which are preferably pleated or embossed, with a view to the mutual stapling of the wrapping bands D enclosing the articles.
Between the cells 8 of the roll 1 there are knife blades 11, the bevelled edges of which are combined with projecting flat surfaces on plates 12 which correspond to them on the other roll 2 in order to perforate the packaging strips in points on areas or lines L between the bags containing the objects in order to facilitate sectioning of the strips. The roller 1 also preferably has a tooth 13 on each side of each of the knife blades 11; these teeth protrude on the roller to enter slots 14 which correspond to them in the roller 2, to make perforations 15 in the packaging bands, contiguous to the dotted lines in order to facilitate the opening of the individual packages by tearing .
According to the invention, one of the objects A is inserted between the wrapping strips D each time a cell of one roll approaches the corresponding veole of the other roll; the wrapping strips are first glued together by the joining surfaces along the front edges of the cells and are progressively glued together on areas surrounding the article, forming between the strips a bag in which object is locked up.
When each bag is completed, the knife blade 11 and the plate 12 draw a dotted line or a perforation line L in an area of the packaging strip between this bag (and the bag to be formed immediately after it, as shown in figs 3 and 4.
The device E which inserts the objects between the packaging strips comprises the compressor 16 and a pusher 17 for each series of cells 8. The compressor and the pusher are combined with a passage 18 which has an opening facing towards the top 19, through
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
which successively fall the objects.
As shown in the figure, the compressor 16 is a flat plate which has a transverse opening 20 through which the pusher 17 slides, the end of which has a deep notch 21 parallel to the plane of the pusher which contains a part of the compressor. The rear end of the pusher has a recess 22 in which is disposed a compressed spring 23 which is placed between the bottom of the recess and one end of the opening 20 in the compressor and through which the pusher is normally. pushed in the direction of the front end of the compressor ;, while being able to move freely. in relation to the compressor under the action of the spring 23.
The other end of the compressor is integral with a control cross member 24 which comprises an arm 25 directed downwards, which is mounted on a push rod 26; the latter slides in supports 27 arranged in the frame K of the machine and one of its ends is connected by a rod 28 to one end of a lever 29, the other end of which is articulated at 30 on the 'machine frame.
This lever carries a. roller 31 caught in an internal oame 32 which is itself mounted on the transmission shaft 7. By this arrangement the control cross member performs a back and forth movement under the effect of the oscillations imparted to the lever 29 by the oame 32 and thus actuated the compressor 16 and the pusher 17.
@e pusher 17 oomporte, preferably parallel fingers 33 which slide in corresponding grooves 34 made in the body of the passage 18 and constitute a grooved support for the object; in one of its positions the pusher is located outside the lane on the side of its opening 19 opposite the feed rollers, as shown in fig. 3, so that when the pusher moves in the other direction , he pushes object A through the corridor and between the strips of packing material as shown in fig * 4.
After the object has been pushed out of the strips over the area where the strips were glued together in the first place, along the anterior edges of the cells 8, the pusher and the oompressor together form a niohe for the object and begin to distort oelui-oi. The movement of the pusher is then stopped by the. meet
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
against a stopper 34 'that it carries, with the end of the corridor as shown in fig. 4.
Then the compressor continues its movement in the direction of the marl against the action of the spring 23 and comes out of the end of the pusher, so as to exert pressure on the object A and to carry out its continuous deformation until 'to give it an elongated or oval shape. Finally, the compressor forces the deformed object back into the cells, between rollers 1 and 2, as shown in fig. 4, and it is held in this position so as to hold the object in its elongated form until that the rollers 1 and 2 have glued the wrapping strips together, in order to partially entangle the object between them and to hold it in its shape.
There, the control bar 24 is moved in the other direction to remove both the pusher and the compressor from the saohet formed between the bands, to the position shown in fig.3.
The objects to be packaged are brought through the opening 19 of the passage 18 corresponding to each of the pushers, by the advance mechanism F which comprises a table 35 supported by the frame K of the machine and hollowed out by a longitudinal channel 36 guiding objects and leading them to each of the hallway openings 19.
A device for advancing back and forth longitudinally on the table to bring the objects up to the opaque corridor opening 19; this device comprises a console 37 which passes through a recess 38 made in the table and which is integral with the control bar 24; two horizontal shafts 39 journal in this console each of these trees carries to obaoune from its ends two forward arms 40; the two arms of the corresponding ends of the shafts serve the respective lanes 18. Each arm has a pair of fingers 41 for gripping the objects in the guide channels 36 of the table.
Each of the lanes corresponds to a pair of arms and the arms of each pair can oscillate simultaneously towards the table and in the opposite direction, so that when the feed device moves in one direction, in this case towards the table. right of figs 3 and 4, the arms
40 move away from the table 30 to pass above and away from the objects lying in the corresponding guide channel 36, as shown in fig.3;
the advance device moving, on the contrary, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the other direction, the arms 40 lower towards the table so that one of them grasps and withdraws an object from the feeding mechanism G, while the otter grasps and pushes into the opening 19 of the corridor. object that proceeds immediately, as shown in fig. 4.
The device which oscillates the arms is shown as comprising a toothed sector 42 mounted on each of the shafts 30, in engagement with the sector mounted on the other shaft, and an arm 43 directed from top to bottom which is integral with one. sectors and enters the recess 38 on the side walls of which it is supported by a friction member mounted in the arm.
This friction member is represented oomme constituted by a cylindrical cup-shaped shoe 44 which is disposed in a window 46 formed in the arm 43 and in which slides a cylindrical wiper 46; between the latter and the shoe 44 is interposed a compressed spring 47 which tends to hold the shoe 44 and the wiper 46 in frictional contact with the walls of the recess 38. The console 37 has a window 48 through which the sliders 44 freely pass. ey 46 and whose sides serve as retainers limiting the rotational movement of the arm 43.
With this arrangement, at the start of the longitudinal movement of the console 37, the rubbers 44 and 46 braking by their friction against the walls of the recess 38, so that they cause the arm 43 to oscillate and; therefore, actuate the advance arm 40, after which the back and forth movement of the console, continuing in the direction of marl, overcomes this friction and causes the console to move along the length of the table.
It will be understood that the cam 32 is traced so as to impart to the control bar 24 a movement of suitable amplitude and time; in motion the objects to be packaged are successively brought to the right end of the feed table 35 by the feed mechanism G, as shown in, fig.3. When the feed device F is placed at the right end of the feed table, the arms 40 are raised as shown in fig.3, and due to the movement of the feed device towards the.
left, the arms are lowered, so that one grasps the object which has just arrived at the table, while the other grasps the object which immediately precedes it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
mentally; the advancing device continuing its movement, pushes the latter object through the opening 19 of the corresponding corridor. At this moment the pusher 17 of the insertion mechanism E will have advanced as shown in FIG. 4, so that the object deposited through the opening 19 will come to rest on the top of the pusher.
With the pusher returning to the position of the rod 3, the object will fall on the bottom of the corridor in line with the pusher so as to be encountered by the latter when the pusher makes its next movement to the left. che of the freeze $.
With the pusher then moving to the left of the rod 5, the object is forced between the wrapping bands D until the movement of the pusher is interrupted by the stopper 34, when the compressor will exert its pressure on the object and compress it until it gives it a new elongated shape, as shown in fig.
4 and as explained above.
The feed mechanism G shown is constituted by an endless conveyor formed by two chains 49 which pass over chain sprockets 50 mounted on shafts 51 supported by the frame.
K. On the chains are mounted a certain number of conveyor elements 52 each consisting of a flat bar integral with one of the links of each chain and having two cells 53 each receiving an object intended for one of the channels. guide 36 of the feed table. By their movement the chains successively bring the conveyor elements 62 to. be juxtaposed with the feed table 35 and placed under it, and, as the figures indicate, the table of,
feed comprises a device which is combined with the conveyor elements to automatically pass the objects of the conveyor elements on the advance table * To this effect, the transport elements comprise two transverse grooves 54 directed inwards from their sides. edges across the corresponding cells 53; the table is extended by a finger 55 aligned with each of these grooves so that, with each conveyor element arriving at the advance table, each of the fingers 55 enters the corresponding groove 54, below the object contained in this conveyor element, as shown in fig.4;
the conveyor element continuing its movement, the object will slide on the table until the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
position shown in fig.3, ready to be gripped by the corresponding advance arm 40.
The conveyor can be operated in any suitable manner as will be explained later.
After having thus explained the arrival of the objects at the packet formation mechanism and the formation of packets by this mechanism, we will now come back to the device for cutting strips of packets into individual packets. Oe mechanism 1 comprises a pair of rollers 56 and 57 which are mounted on shafts 53 and rotate around axes parallel to each other; these shafts journaling in the frame of the machine K. These rollers are driven in the opposite direction by a device which will be described below.
The rolls receive the strip of bundles between them, and one of the rollers 56 has a number of longitudinal notches 59 regularly spaced on its periphery, each of which will be covered or overlapped by one of the ground areas produced by the blade. knife 11 and the plate 12 of the stapling and perforating rollers 1 and 2. Between the notches are notched in the roller 56 of the flats 60 to spare the. Place pouches containing the items from the packet strip.
The other roller 57 has elastic longitudinal ribs 61 regularly spaced around its periphery and each capable of being pushed in one of the notches 59 when the rollers rotate. Fig. 8, in particular, shows that each of the elastic ribs 61 is constituted by a metal blade 62 covered with an elastic material 63 such as rubber, which preferably forms a rubber tube fitted tightly to the blade.
The width of the notches 59 and the thickness of the elastic ribs have a relation to each other such that, when the rollers rotate, each elastic rib is deformed and pressed into the corresponding notch 59 so as to hold it firmly. strip of bundles 4 at points on the opposite edges of the notch and on the opposite sides of the perforated area L of the. tape that overlaps the notch, and then exert pressure on this area between the points in question, in order to pull separately on the strips of packaging material and separate them, as shown in fig. 9,
If desired, a device can be established to eject the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
severed ends of the strip of bundles out of the notches;
for this purpose, the roller 56 can be surrounded by several elastic bands 64 arranged across the notches 59, in such a way that they are pressed and distended in the corresponding notches by the elastic ribs 61 during the cutting operation, as ,,, shown in fig. 9, and that they contract and withdraw themselves out of the notches after the ribs 61 have disengaged from them. By their withdrawal from the notches, these strips will push back the edges of the cut sections of the strip of bundles in front of them.
We will understand that, if we wish, the ribs 61 and notches
59 can be spaced apart and that a suitable clutch mechanism can be used to control the rotation of the rollers.
56 and 57, so as to section the strip of packets into chunks each comprising two or more B-packets, instead of splitting individual packets, as shown.
In the arrangement of the invention which is described, it is also desirable that the strip of packages be divided in its length between the two rows or series of bags containing the articles; for this purpose, two conjugate rotary knife blades 65 and 66, mounted and rotating, one below and the other above the strip of bundles, can be installed on shafts 67 which are journaled in the frame of the machine.
It is also desirable to mount on these same shafts 67 brushes 68, one on each side of each of the knives, so as to prevent the strip of bundles from curling while it is cut by the knives, and to maintain also the strip under tension when it goes from the stapling rollers 1 and 2 to the sectioning rollers 66 and 67. Brushes and knives rotate under the action of a mechanism which will be described.
The transmission shaft 7 carries a pinion 69 which meshes with a free toothed wheel 70 which pivots in the frame of the machine and which itself engages with a toothed wheel 71 mounted on the lower shaft 67. This wheel meshes , in turn, with another toothed wheel 72 mounted on the upper shaft 67 so that the two shafts 87 rotate in opposite directions, as shown by the arrows. The
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
free pinion 6 mentioned above meshes with the. lower toothed wheel 71 and toothed wheel 5, whereby the stapling rollers 1 and 2 are driven in the directions indicated by the arrows.
A similar free pinion 73 meshes with the: kings with the Lower toothed wheel 71 and with the toothed wheel 74 mounted on the lower shaft 58 of the disconnector mechanism I, and this wheel 74 meshes with another toothed wheel 75 mounted on the shaft upper 58, which causes the sectioning rollers to be driven in the direction indicated by the arrows.
To actuate the conveyor of the object feeding mechanism G, 1 lower marble 67 carries a chain wheel 76 while one of the shafts 51 of the conveyor carries a chain sprocket 77; a drive chain 78 passes over these chain sprockets. It is also @ ediralbe to have), on chain 78, free sprockets 79 to adjust the tension.
If desired, a suitable clutch mechanism of known arrangements, designated as a whole pat 80 and actuated by a draw rod 81, can be installed to start and stop the conveyor; and one can, of course, use any suitable mechanism, such as a clutch, to establish and remove the connection between the transmission shaft 7 and a power source such as an electric motor,
Although the invention has been shown and described as carried out in some type of machine and in certain special construction details,
it will be understood that various modifications and changes can be made to the construction of the machine and that the invention can be implemented in machines of different types without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
