<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"DRESSING MECHANISM FOR PROFILED ROTARY WHEELS"% 'invention relates to a mechanism. profiling or grinding wheel dressing and more particularly a device intended for dressing rotating grinding wheels intended for grinding helical surfaces such as helical gears or parts of the same type.
The main object of the invention is to provide a dressing mechanism construction which gives a grinding wheel the exact shape necessary to achieve by grinding a predetermined helical surface.
It is another object to control this mechanism by means of a model corresponding to a cross-sectional contour determined at the advance of the finished part.
With objects in view, the invention consists in the first place of 'a dressing mechanism in which we print @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a compound movement of a dressing point relative to the grinding wheel so as to exert on the latter an abrasion action such as would be exerted by an abrasive surface coinciding with the finished surface of the workpiece in its movement relative to the grinding wheel during molding.
The invention further consists of a dressing mechanism in which a combined movement is imparted to the dressing tip, comprising movement in a plane following a pattern corresponding to a predetermined cross-sectional contour of the finished part. .
The invention further consists of a dressing mechanism comprising means for causing the dressing tip to move in a pattern corresponding to a cross-sectional contour of the finished part as well as means for moving these. means of obligation following a helical path.
The invention consists of a dressing mechanism which is mounted on a table, carrying the workpiece, moved back and forth, forming part of a grinding machine and axially aligned with the workpiece in front of it. to find, so that it can be moved along the same path, this mechanism also comprising means for causing the dressing tip to move along a path in the plane of rotation which corresponds to the contour of the cross section of the room by such a plan.
The invention further consists in the specific construction of the binding means by which the pattern corresponding to the desired cross-sectional contour of the part is followed.
The invention further consists of various construction features set out below.
In the drawings the construction specifically shown is intended for dressing circular and cycloidal contours. However, the invention is also applicable to dressing other contours of grinding wheels intended for grinding helical elements,

Fig. 10. is a plan view of the. underside showing contact between the dressing element and its support; and Fig. 11 is a similar view showing a different arrangement.
The specific part to be ground shown in fig. 1 to 3 comprises a pair of conjugate helical elements made as follows. The male element A has a number of helical teeth which extend outwardly, each of which has in the plane of rotation an outline having on one side a circular part between the points. 1 and 2 and a tangent cycloidal part between points 2 and. On the opposite side there is a cycloidal part between the points and 4. The female element B shown in fig.3 has a circular part between the points 2 and 6 and a cycloidal part between the points 6 and Z. The cycloidal parts are based on the pitch circles of the respective elements and, are traced by the dressing mechanism of the following construction.
It is a frame which is intended to be mounted on the machining table animated by a reciprocating movement axially aligned with the points D and D 'which support the workpiece to be ground, In this frame is mounted' a fixed shaft E whose axis coincides with the points D and D 'and which comprises a head forming a body E', fixed to the frame C by the bolts E2.
The opposite end of the shaft E comes into contact with a support E3 removably attached to the frame. Between its ends a toothed segment F is mounted on the shaft] and '.
.his. primitive radius corresponds to. radius of the pitch circle of the workpiece. This toothed segment is keyed on the shaft so as to be maintained, fixed on it. G is a housing containing the toothed segment F and pivotally mounted on. the shaft B by means of bearings, -, roller bearings G 'and In this housing there is a shaft H mounted so as to be able to turn in the roller bearings H' and H2 and comprising a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
head H3 which extends outside the casing.
A pin segment F 'mounted on the shaft H and keyed thereon meshes with the wheel segment F so that any angular displacement of the housing G on the shaft E causes a rolling of the pinion segment F' on the wheel segment F. Such a rolling movement is subjected to the elastic opposition of a torsion coil spring I, the opposite ends of which are respectively connected to the shaft H and to the ring I '. The ring I ′ can turn in an adjustable manner on this axis and is fixed by a screw I3 screwed into the housing G and engaging in one of the notches I4, the series of which extends over this collar.
This makes it possible to exert on the spring any desired tension by adjusting the ring I 'by rotation. The construction, as far as has been described so far, is the same in the two dressers having to shape the male and female wheels respectively. There is however a permutation in the positions of the wheel and pinion segments. Thus, for the female wheel, the radius of the fixed wheel is greater than that of the pinion, while in the male wheel the radius of the fixed wheel is less than that of the pinion. The same wheel segments can be used in both constructions, only their positions are reversed relative to shafts E and H.
MALE TRAINER.
The dresser which shapes the grinding wheel intended to grind the male helical element is briefly referred to as the male dresser and in addition to the elements already described is constituted as follows. J is a support member which is mounted on a part H4 of the shaft H which protrudes to the right and is also coupled by means of an eccentric stud
H5 so as to rotate at the same time as the head H3. J 'is a shaft mounted in the support J so as to rotate freely in the roller bearings supporting the radial pressures and the longitudinal forces J2, J3.
K is a diamond holder which is fixed to the outer end of the shaft J 'and is provided with an arm K' extending forward of the plane in which the dressing is to be performed. - The diamond holder of the K8 diamond is mounted at the free end of the arm K ', being anustated by means of a screw K5 and locked in the adjusted position by a stop screw K4. Element K also has a handle K5 which is mounted on it and which extends radially outward and rearward in a position allowing easy maneuvering. K6 is a fin fixed on the element K extending by overflowing on a J4 fin carried
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
by the element J.
A K7 screw, located in the K6 fin, forms an adjustable stop to come into contact with the J4 fin and the removable screw J6 is used to connect the K6 and J4 fins together for certain dressing operations.
There is also a second J7 fin on element J which is some distance from fin J4 and is on the opposite side of fin K6. J8 is an adjustable screw found in fin-J7 and forming a stop for fin K6.
The housing G is provided with a number of adjustable screws functioning as stops to limit the amount of angular displacement of the housing G on the shaft E and to fix its position relative to the wheel segment F and F '. One of these screws L is intended to come into contact with a shoulder L 'carried by the pinion F' and limits the oscillatory movement of this pinion with respect to the housing G when the latter turns in a dextrorotatory direction ( fig. 7 and-9). A . other screw L comes in. contact with a shoulder L3 carried by the pinion F 'when the housing rotates in a sinister direction.
When the screw J8 located in the fin J7 comes into contact with the fin K6, it limits the free oscillation movement of the element K relative to the element J. The construction is such that when the handle K5 is moved .in a sinistrogyre direction of the. position shown in fig. 7 and in full line fig. 9, the sequence of operations follows. that here is: the handle K5 directly moves the element K, the arm K 'the diamond holder K2 and' the diamond tip the latter being initially aligned with. the point of tangency of the pitch circles of toothed wheel F and pinion F '.
The movement of the element K allows the simultaneous movement of the element J under the action of the torsion spring I (which has been previously energized) or, if desired, a second handle K9 attached to the housing G can be grasped by the operator at the same time as the handle 'K5. This keeps screw K7 in contact with fin J4 so that elements J and 'K rotate together. However, since the element J is fixed so as to be able to turn on the shaft H and since the pinion F 'fixed on this shaft is meshed with the fixed wheel F, this forces the pinion' to roll on the shaft. wheel by pulling housing G with it.
The housing rotates around the shaft E and moves with the translational movement of the pinion 'F' but the pinion has an additional movement, namely a rotation around its own axis. As a result, there is relative movement between. the pinion F 'and the housing @G which
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
brings the shoulder L3 located on this pinion into contact with a stop screw L2 as shown in dotted lines in 8 fig. 9. This prevents further movement of the pinion and housing G but the element K can still rotate under the effect of the handle K5 until the vane K6 comes into contact with the screw J8 as shown in dotted lines in 2 fig 9.
The effect of the movements just described is that the diamond point K8 describes a cycloidal curve during the period when the elements K and J are rotating together said curve being line 3-2 fig.9.
In the movement of the element K continuing independently of the element J, the diamond point K8 describes a circular curve or line 2-1 freezes 9, Thus the entire curve is the same curve shown in fig. 2 between the dots and 1.
The lengths of the circular and cycloidal parts of the curve can be varied by adjusting screws K7, L and L2 or, if desired, the entire curve can be made cycloidal by connecting fins 04. And K6 to one another. the other with a second J6 screw.
The grinding of the opposite face of the tooth of the male member is effected by a separate grinding wheel which is dressed by operations similar to those described above.
However, since the curve is cycloid 1-4 fig. 2, the stop screw L2 must be adjusted outwards from the position shown in fig. 9. This allows greater angular movement of the housing around the shaft E before the shoulder L3 of the pinion F ′ comes into contact with the screw L2. While the face surfaces of the two grinding wheels are both oriented on the same side, they can be used to grind opposing tooth faces by turning the part end to end on its support points.
FEMALE TRAINER
The female dressing mechanism is similar to the male dressing mechanism described above with the following differences: First, the positions of the gears F and F 'are reversed, the one with the upper radius being engaged on the fixed axis E while the one of lesser radius is fixed on the shaft H. The element K is replaced by a similar element Ka, having an angled arm which carries the diamond holder and leaves a free space for the dressing movement.
A screw L4, located in the housing G, abuts against the shoulder L5 carried by the fixed gear F, and the spring I normally maintains the parts in this position shown in fi.6.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
A screw L6, placed on the left side of the housing, is intended to come into contact with a shoulder L7 on the fixed gear after a predetermined displacement of this housing in a dextrorotatory direction. On the right side the screw J8 located in]: the previously described fin J7 forms a stop intended to come into contact with the fin K6 and limits the movement of the element K in the sinistrogyre direction. The diamond point K8 in the position of fig. 6 is at. point 6 of the curve fig. 3. This is why the displacement of the handle K5 in the dextrorotatory direction forces this point to describe a circular curve corresponding to the curve 6-5 fig.3.
On the other hand, the displacement of the tip K8 from the position, fig. '6, in the sinistrogyre direction forces this tip to describe a cycloidal curve corresponding to the curve ± -1 freeze 3. The length of' this curve is limited by placing the screw J8 in contact with the fin K7 as was the case in the construction described above.
Assembly of the dressing mechanism.
As described above, the frame C of the dressing mechanism est.montée on the workpiece tips D and D 'of a grinding machine, or axially aligned with them. This grinding machine is intended for grinding helical gears or other helical surfaces, but its specific construction is not the object of the present invention. In general, this machine is provided with a table M supporting the part, animated by a back and forth movement, on which are mounted the fixed headstock N and the mobile headstock 0 which respectively carry the points D and D '. The fixed headstock is provided with a rotating spindle P which is actuated by means of a gear train P 'by a rack P2 extending transversely.
The outer end of this rack carries a roller P3 which is in contact with an inclined guide Q carried by a fixed table or frame R. The arrangement is such that when the table comes and goes, a rotary movement is simultaneously printed. spindle P so as to move the dressing mechanism (or the workpiece) along a helical path 'relative' to the grinding wheel. This grinding wheel is mounted on a fixed part of the grinding machine and is wedged at a certain angle with respect to the axis of the points D and D 'which is substantially the same as the angle of the helix of the workpiece.
Consequently, when the table M moves back and forth, there is a displacement of the workpiece so as to cause a relative advancement of the latter longitudinally along the helical groove existing between
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
opposing helical surfaces. When the dressing mechanism is mounted between points D and D 'or on another device axially aligned with them, it undergoes the same displacement as that which is imparted to the piece when it is between said points. The spindle P carries a head P4 at its anterior end which is coupled with the frame C by means of a stud or key P5, thus obliging this frame to turn with the spindle.
OPERATION.
Here is the sequence of operations which occur when dressing the grinding wheel intended to grind the specific helical elements shown in fig. 2 and 3. To grind the male element fig. 2, separate grinding wheels are drawn up respectively at the contours to the right and to the left of the center line. The part of the curve to the right, fig. 2, is drawn up for a displacement of the handle K5 in a sinistrogyre direction, fig. 7 The diamond point K8 starts from point 3. on the pitch circle and describes a cycloidal curve between 3. and 2 then a circular curve between 2 and 1, The curve located on the left fig. 2 starts from point 4 and is a cycloid continues to point 1.
To grind the female element, fig. 3, a single grinding wheel is used and a circular curve is drawn between points 6 and 5 and a cycloidal curve between points 6 and 7. The movement which has just been described would not be sufficient to give the grinding wheel a shape such that it reproduces these curves in the room. In fact, a wheel set to this contour in any of its cross-sectional planes would cause encroachments during the molding operation which would destroy such an contour.
However, when the dressing mechanism is mounted as described in the last paragraph and is moved in a helical path while at the same time a further oscillatory action is imparted to the dressing tip by operating the handle. K5, a shape is generated in the grinding wheel which will grind the part to the desired contours.
Before starting the dressing operation, the table M is brought into a position such (using means manually controlled and not shown) that the dressing point K8 is at one end of the curve which must be described.
As shown in fig. 8, the dressing wheel is intended for molding the female element and the dressing tip K8 is placed on one side of this wheel. It is then made to oscillate by a displacement of the handle K to draw up a

short. length of the curve. If there was no movement of the table M, the tip K8 would soon lose contact with the grinding wheel, but, if the table is moved slightly forward 'the tip' is brought in again - in contact with the grinding wheel in order to dress by its oscillating movement another part of the curve.
This action is continued in order to gradually straighten successive parts of the curve until the dressing tip reaches the end of the curve on the opposite side of the grinding wheel. It would naturally

- # - Summary ..
The improved dressing mechanism fulfills a role in shaping the grinding wheel which is similar to that which a coincident abrasive surface would fill, with the finished surface of the workpiece in the relative movement of the latter with respect to the grinding wheel. ' The shape actually given to the wheel is not the same in the successive dressing operations; because.the radius of .the grinding wheel is one. factor which intervenes. Nevertheless, 'regardless of the radius of the grinding wheel and the shape given to it, the grinding of the workpiece is always the same and gives exactly the desired cross-sectional contour.
While the dressing mechanism is intended for profiling grinding wheels, it is evident that it allows for profiling. other rotary cutting tools such as milling cutters.
