<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

des srreuxsi En supprimant les jeux do la manière qui vient ' .,;
' ' ' d'être décrite,,les erreurs qui peuvent avoir été introduite. dans les dents au cours de l'opération d'4bauchaép ou de faconsage préalable# sont corrigées au cours de l'opération de finissage.
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Finishing of toothed wheels by scraping.
The present invention relates to a tool for finishing toothed wheels by "shaving" or scraping and to a method and a machine for carrying out this operation using said tools.
The finishing of the toothed wheels is usually carried out on a machine in which the scratching wheel and the scratching tool are mounted on "oblique" shafts, that is to say on shafts which are not parallel and which. do not intersect.
The usual scraping tool has the shape of a helical toothed wheel meshing with the toothed wheel to end transverse notches, which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
determine cutting edges ,. are formed in the teeth of the helical wheel, 'or tool, and the teeth of the latter are forced into the hollows or spaces between teeth of the wheel to be finished.
One of the oblique trees is senna, the other is mad. The tool scrapes the roughness of the surface of the teeth of the wheel, but its cutting edges do not generate. always the desired surfaces on said teeth and, therefore.) do not correct the inaccuracies which may have been produced by the milling operation by which the wheel blank was established.
Precise surfaces could be generated on toothed wheels using a tool having the general shape of a helical wheel if this tool were provided with cutting edges oriented along the lines described the contact points between the teeth tool and the teeth of the wheel to be finished. The Applicant has been warned that it is possible to provide a tool established in the form of a helical toothed wheel with such cutting edges by truncating one of the ends of the teeth of said tool along a suitable surface of revolution around the axis of the tool. wheel.
A cutting tool is easy to set up in this way, and its sharpening is also easy, since it only needs to be done around its axis and grind the surface of revolution. at the end of the teeth so as to sharpen all the cutting edges simultaneously using the same grinding wheel.
In the present cutting tool thus 'established,' des. Cut edges of the desired shape appear only as one. only side of each of the tool's teeth. These edges are sharp and are well suited for scraping one side of each tooth of a toothed wheel to finish meshing with the tool, this scraping generating a precise surface on a side of the teeth of the wheel when the tool and the wheel receive - properly phased rotational movements.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Mainly due to the fact that the new scraping tool only acts on one of the sides of the teeth of the wheel to be finished, the sharp cutting edges of this tool tend to urge the wheel to finish in the direction in which its shaft rotates it during a shaving operation.
As the pressure exerted by the cutting edges on the unfinished toothing is necessarily irregular, the finishing operation is only satisfactory if it is carried out in a machine which prevents any irregular advancement movement of the wheel to be finished under. the influence of the tool, scraping "
According to the invention, such movement of the wheel to be finished is prevented by applying the driving force directly to the shaft on which said wheel is mounted, and indirectly to the tool-holder shaft. by means of a transmission gear, with determined ratio, which connects the two shafts to each other.
This results in the forces exerted on the transmission gear, and which are caused by the contact between the cutting edges of the tool and them. teeth of the wheel to be finished, have the same direction: -that the forces exerted on said transmission gear by the driving control, so that the wheels or pinions, of said gear are constantly kept in contact with drive, emt and prevent any Irregular movement of the wheel to finish forward.
Consequently, a machine for finishing the toothed wheels according to the invention, and by which an improved scraping or shaving process can be implemented, comprises a cutting tool in the form of a helical toothed wheel. the threads of which are truncated at one of their ends by a surface of revolution, shafts arranged obliquely, for the tool and the wheel to be finished, a transmission gear connecting these two shafts together and of

It should be noted that any rotation of the pinion to be finished 36 relative to the chuck 34 is prevented by a suitable key 98 and a nut 100 (see Figures 10 and 13), and that the scraping tool 1 is itself fixed rigidly. -. to the knife-holder shaft 46 by a suitable slide
102 and a nut 104. The tool 1- is driven so that it rotates with the work 36, in a predetermined speed ratio.
As previously mentioned, each of the cutting edges 4 of the tool is generally conformed to the line described by the points of contact between the advancing flank of each of the teeth 2 of said tool and the Finishing sprocket 36. This arrangement of the scraping edges ensures a good finishing cut and enables the scraping to be performed accurately at a relatively high speed. In addition ,, this arrangement of the cutting edges makes it possible to have the ma'ndrin 34 and the shaft 46 at a relatively large angle of obliquity ,, which increases the sliding between the tool and the part to be finished.
Preferably, the angle between the axes of the tool and the. part is between 15 and 60 in order to obtain the desired scraping speeds.
As previously specified, the wheel to be finished and the shaving tool 1 are both positively and synchronously driven. The roughing of the blank of the pinion intended to be finished by a scraping operation is cut.

of this roughing, such as the helical alignment errors of the teeth of the milling cutter, can cause corresponding inaccuracies in the teeth of the milling cutter, it is very important that these inaccuracies have been eliminated in the finished wheel or pinion. . To this end, the present invention contemplates the elimination of the play existing in the drive mechanism of the workpiece to be finished and

<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
To adjust the cutting depth of the ridges 4 in the flanks of the teeth of the pinion to be finished, it suffices to turn the tool 1 at a small angle with respect to this pinion. Such angular adjustment of the tool 1 is provided by the mechanism shown in FIG. 10, Marble 62 carrying the helical gears 60 and 64 is not only supported. so as to be able to rotate, by bearings 112 and 114, but it is also axially adjustable in these bearings.
A set screw 116 threads into a suitable nut-shaped member 118 mounted on housing 32, and the inner end of shaft 62 rests on a ball stop 119.
The shaft 62 is continuously biased towards the adjustment screw 116 by a compression spring 121 housed within a cup-shaped part 123 attached to the housing. Preferably, the spring 121 acts on the shaft. shaft 62 by means of a thrust ball bearing 125. It is evident that, by turning the adjusting screw 116, the shaft 62 can be adjusted in either direction of direction. axial.
When such an axial adjustment is made to the shaft 62, the helical gears. 56, 60, 64 and 66 rotate by a small angle. The amplitude of the angular movement imparted to the tool can be modified under the influence of a given axial displacement of the shaft 62, by making use of Sprockets of "different helix angles." In the construction described, the helix angle of the fin 56 is about 15, while the helix angle of the pinion 66 is about 25.
By properly coordinating the helix angles of the pinions 56 and-66 and the pitch of the thread of the replace screw 116, precise and precise depth of cut adjustments can be obtained.

The finishing of the toothed wheels using the apparatus described above is carried out from. The following manner The finishing pieces 36 and the tool 1 are fixed to their respective mandrels and the position of the tool is adjusted using the jig head via 116 so as to. get depth of cut

desired. The drive headstock 12 is then started so that the tool and the part are driven from the strap described above.
Using the handwheel 50, then opted to advance along 1 axis of the mandrel 34 the housing 32 which carries the scraping tool, making the movement of the tool 1 across the part to be finished, a of the flanks of each of the teeth of this piece is precisely finished, regardless of any inaccuracies that may have been present at the time of the initial roughing operation.
The particular shape of the cutting edges 4 of the tool 1 and the relatively large angular relationship between the axes of the tool and the pinion to be finished allow an improved scraping action, albeit at high speed, i.e. This means that the tool can receive a relatively rapid feed movement across the periphery of the workpiece without the risk of producing 'flank irregularities' located on one side of the toothing of the pinion to be finished. Turn, finish the opposite sides on the other side of the pinion, remove the part and repeat the operation described above.
In this way, the finishing of one side of the teeth is carried out independently of the finishing of the other side.
Figures 14 and 15 show a machine, generally designated 120, the construction of which is based on the fundamentals of this invention and which is adjustable to allow the finishing of sprockets or workpieces of various sizes, this machine making it possible to finish by scraping the two sides or sides of the finish wheel without it being necessary to remove this wheel to reverse its position relative to the mandrel which supports it.

EMI19.1
The invention lends itself to the use of attached carbide elements, such as the cutting edge B shown in FIG. 4.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 and illustrates how the hard metal insert can be used to ensure long tool life. In earlier scraping tools,
EMI19.2
this characteristic of cori'stluction was not posed:
In the present scraping tool, the cutting edge extends from the top to the base of each tooth as indicated by surface 3 of Figures 1, 2 and 4, which allows a grinding wheel to
EMI19.3
, similar shape, or tool, to have easy access to the cutting edge. The remaining portion of each tooth constitutes a gear tooth in principle conjugate with the complementary teeth of the toothed wheel to be finished.
FIG. 7 shows a one-piece rotary finishing tool with cutting teeth at each of its ends. This tool was generally designated by 248.
EMI19.4
Like the tools 1-176-178 previously described, or. 1248 includes a series of helical teeth 2 which are disengaged,

at their opposite ends so as to constitute cutting edges 4th By rotating the tool in one direction, the cuttings of one of the ends of the teeth 3 can be used to scrape the flanks located on one side of the teeth of the. wheel finish, FLnd6l:) Iaant axially either. With the tool, or the wheel to be finished, the cutting teeth S located at the opposite end of the tool can be brought to a position such that they act on the opposite sides of the wheel to be finished. Of course, for the second finishing pass, the tool must be rotated in the opposite direction.
A positive lateral draft can be obtained lice the scratching doubts $ by giving to. these teeth at an angle

<Desc / Clms Page number 20>
positive of the desired lateral draft. This is illustrated in Figure 5, in which the Tool is shown in elevation by its outline.
If the helix angle of the theoretical tool is. the side draft angle is and the helix angle of the modified tool is gl. This can be expressed by the following formula; g1 = g + g2 This slight deviation in the helix angle makes cutting edge 4 more bite, while sharpening surface 3 retains
EMI20.1
substantially the grinding wheel forms that is to say that of the suri'ace of a hyperbololde or of a surface approaching very closely.
The present invention facilitates the finishing of gear teeth with an intentionally given crown profile and helix angle.
EMI20.2
earlier, the convex shape of the gear teeth is obtained by modifying the profile of the finishing tool.
In the present shaving process, the profile and the longitudinal shape, can be easily obtained by giving a different shape to the surface 3 ,, The circle 6a drawn in continuous lines. The.; fi ure 3 indicates an exaggerated modification made to the shape of the surfaces- 3. Instead of a
EMI20.3
hyperbolic form .; one can make use of an aircular form 6a, of radius r.
As a result of this modification, the cutting edges 4 remove a greater quantity of metal from the inner and outer portions of the surfaces of the side of the wheel will end up the teeth of this wheel thereby receiving a domed shape. Likewise, by applying the
EMI20.4
side clearance indicated in figure 5, and by varying the depth of cut of one end of the tooth of the wheel to 'i.nj.r t3, the other, the teeth can be bulged longitudinally (the cr os.
This is how to produce. bulging
<Desc / Clms Page number 21>
Combined transverse and longitudinal teeth of the wheel is a distinct advantage of the present. tool on ordinary scraping tools, in the case of which the domed prof, il must be introduced by a developmental modification of the profile at the cost of a strong increase in the cost price.
The modification to the curvature of the surfaces 3 can be achieved by a very simple grinding rectification operation
It emerges from the foregoing description that the present invention relates to simple and improved means and method by means of which tooth flanks (gear teeth, involute assembly tenons, etc.) can be formed. finished scraping with great accuracy and at increased speed.
By pressing the cutting edges of a rotary tool against the flanks situated on one side of the teeth of the wheel to be finished rotatably supported, and by causing said wheel to be finished to rotate in a determined time relation with the movement of the cutting edges, at the same time as these edges, and the teeth of the wheel are displaced axially with respect to one another, one generates united and precise sidewalls of predetermined contours.
The flanks on the other side of. the toothing of the wheel to be finished can be generated similarly and either by reversing the position of the part or that of the tool on the corresponding support, by making use of the same cutting edges, or by making use of a series of other cutting edges without the need to reverse the position of the workpiece or tool.
Another important advantage is the elimination of difficulties due to games; of the present invention. The invention also lends itself to the shaving of toothed wheels of various sizes and shapes and reduces the expense involved in the construction and maintenance of the scraping tool.
<Desc / Clms Page number 22>
Of course, the construction details described and shown to illustrate some practical embodiments of the invention have been given for illustrative purposes only, said invention being capable of accommodating other forms and of. numerous modifications, without departing from its principle.
